[EXPIRED] USACE: South Mills Lock Gate Rehabilitation, beginning Jan 6, Dismal Swamp Canal, VA/NC AICW Alternate Route
Our thanks to Donna Stewart for this advanced notice allowing cruisers to adapt their float plan. The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center is a longtime CRUISERS NET SPONSOR. The Dismal Swamp Canal, Route 2 of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, will be closed temporarily to through vessel traffic at that time, Jan 6. The rehabilitation is expected to take 90 days. See USACE link below.
The USACE schedules maintenance to lift the Canal gates for rehabilitation, on a rotation basis. Each lock, both in South Mills and Deep Creek have a River gate and Canal gate. The South Mills Lock had a rehab of the River gate in 2012. (Photos attached). This maintenance is scheduled to take place, starting Jan. 6th. See the attached notice from the USACE. Their announcement states it is expected to take 90 days and they can provide more information.
We are appreciative of their attention to the continued and necessary maintenance of this historic waterway.
