Which Way Now? Compass 102

Start Location: Classroom
This advanced compass course will cover more challenging aspects of map-and-compass navigation, such as topography maps and triangulation. We recommend that you have attended a prior basic compass workshop at the park or have a good understanding of taking bearings from a map or the field. Best for children upper elementary age or older.
Supplejack Spring Hike

Start Location: Visitor Center
Join the ranger for an easy guided hike along the lovely Supplejack footpath. Intended to be beginner-friendly, so bring your walking shoes and any questions about hiking, wildlife, and the Swamp you’d like to ask. Children and leashed pets are welcome, but trail is not stroller-friendly.
Spring Wagon Ride (Morning)

Start Location: Visitor Center
Hop aboard the Dismal Swamp Express, an open-air wagon, for a narrated ride along Canal Road. See the park’s liquor still and lighter boat replicas and maybe even some interesting snakes, birds, or other wildlife! The ride lasts 45 minutes to an hour and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If the weather is questionable or you have a large group, please call the office at 252-771-6593 in advance. Insect repellent is recommended. Bring snacks and water if you want them.

Spring Paddle

Start Location: Boat Launch
Enjoy a leisurely guided paddle along the historic Dismal Swamp Canal. Learn about the park’s fascinating past and look for wildlife. Free, but you must call to reserve a boat. We’ll be using the park’s brand-new Jackson kayaks!
Earth Day Canal Clean-up
Fri, 04/17/2020 – 10:00am to 2:00pm; Ranger-led event at 1:00pm
Start Location: Boat Launch
2020 marks the 50th annual Earth Day! We’re celebrating with a Canal clean up. Take some time out of Spring Break, grab a trash bag, and hop in a kayak to beautify one small section of the world! Bring your boat or call to reserve one of ours. Ranger-led event at 1 pm, but you can come anytime between 10 am and 2 pm to participate. The park will supply trash bags.
