[EXPIRED] July 27 Update from Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center Director, Sarah Hill
The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center is located adjacent to the Dismal Swamp State Park, offering trails, exhibits and ongoing programs in Camden County, NC. Docks are provided by the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center, A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR and a NC DOT Rest Area facility. See June 23 Update.
Good Afternoon!
Hope everyone had a beautiful weekend!
Attached are a few images of the swamp & canal from June/July. Traffic has been steady, with boaters sharing incredible photos & videos on social media. A few small patches of duckweed have been located near the locks, but all is clear within the canal.
Below is a link to a local newspaper article on the Norfolk District’s commissioning ceremony last month for Deep Creek lockmaster, Robert Peek. A multi-purpose vessel, PEEK, was named in his honor with his family and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials in attendance at the Dismal Swamp State Park. It was a lovely ceremony and very fitting tribute to a Dismal Swamp Canal/ICW legend.
Many thanks,
Sarah
(P.S. ~ The Norfolk District team is working on making a video link available to view the PEEK ceremony, we’ll pass it along as soon as it is made available.)

Mr Peek loved the Dismal swamp and shared his knowledge and affection for the system with all who passed through. He was excited to promote the Dismal swamp and it history to every one who passed through. The Dismal swamp was blessed to have someone like him. He will be missed but his memory when passing through the swamp will bring smiles to all who had the pleasure of meeting him.
