LNM: Beltline RR Bridge Deviation on 20 May, Elizabeth River, VA
The Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad Lift Bridge, with a closed vertical clearance of 6ft, crosses the Waterway at Statute Mile 2.6, near the community of Chesapeake, VA.
![]() Sector Virginia (757) 374-3408 MSIB 026-25 April 14, 2025 Elizabeth River – Belt Line Bridge Deviation Mariners are advised of a bridge deviation of the Belt Line Bridge over the Elizabeth River Southern Branch, at mile marker 2.6, in Portsmouth, VA to facilitate a required Federal Railroad Administration inspection and testing. The work will require the bridge to be maintained in the closed to navigation position during the dates and times listed below. Dates/Times: Tuesday May 20, 2025, the bridge will be maintained in the closed to navigation position from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the following scheduled openings: 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. An alternative rain make-up day will be on Wednesday May 21, 2025.
The bridge will be able to open for emergencies with a 30-minute advance notice during this time. Mariners able to transit the bridge in the closed position will be able to do so at any time. At all other times, the drawbridge will operate in accordance with the operating regulations set out in 33CFR117.997(a).
