    • [EXPIRED] The Rigolets between Mississippi Sound and Lake Pontchartrain BLOCKED

WOW, I can tell you from pesonal experience that the Rigolets, which, as you will see below is now blocked by a "burned bridge," is by far the best way to enter Lake Pontchartrain from Mississippi Sound and points east.
Captain George also knows what he's talking about when he mentions "skinny water" in Chef Menteur Pass. Personally, I wouldn't want to try this passage in any vessel that draws more than 5 feet, maybe 4 1/2 feet.
Let's hope the Highway 90 bridge is repaired in the near future. Thanks to Captain George for bringing this important development to the attention of the cruising community!

Just found your site.  Most interesting!
On 2/18/07, we were returning to Lake Pontchartrain from Mobile.  Our normalreturn through "The Rigolets" was blocked by the Highway 90 Bridge which suffered a fire and won't be operational in the near future.  USCG is now aware of the closing.
The alternate route is to continue West in the ICWW to "The Chef Menteur Pass" to enter Lake Pontchartrain.  Watch the "skinny water" and crab traps when leaving "The Chef". This adds about 45 minutes to the trip.
      Thanks again for your site!
