    • [EXPIRED] Depths Still a Problem on East Pass

Captain John's note below refers to East Pass inlet, immediately west of Destin, Florida. This has always been a problem plagued channel. Once I remember being interviewed by the Destin newspaper, and I was nervous because of all the unhappy things I had written about East Pass in the second edition of "Cruising Guide to the Northern Gulf Coast." The reporter interviewing me was a sailor, and she never mentioned my coverage of the inlet. Finally, I asked myself, and was told that if I drove over the East Pass bridge and looked out I would see "truly emergency dreding in progress." Looks like things have not chaned very much!

In regards to heading offshore from Destin, when I came through in early May, you had to go to the outside of the red bouys as you turned to the right towards the jetties. Fortunately, we had stopped at Shalimar to visit a friend who provided us with this local knowledge. As we made our way out, we saw all the departing boats follow this line. Unfortunately, I can't be more precise, as I failed to write it down at the time. I believe though it is the daymark followed by a bouy as the channel swings to starboard. For anyone using this route, I would strongly advise getting local knowledge beforehand.
