    • [EXPIRED] Hurricane Irene Aftermath

Reports below are listed in a rough geographic format, moving north to south! Please bear with us as we post information just as fast as it is received. For awhile, this page will be very fluid, as we add data from here and there.

      North Carolina Reports:

      AICW/Dismal Swamp Canal Alternate Route:
Thankfully, we received between 9 and 12 inches at a minimum in the Dismal Swamp. There are still hot spots related to the fire according to our State Park Supt. Joy Greenwood. I’ve also received word there are several trees down in the Dismal Swamp Canal. 10 boats weathered the storm in the South Mills section of the Canal between the lock and drawbridge, and we are grateful to the Army Corps of Engineers for allowing them to do so. Hopefully, the remaining fire can be managed more successfully due to this inflood of moisture and debris cleanup will begin in the near future. Let’s all cross our fingers!
      Donna Stewart
      Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center

And, a later report from Captain Stewart:
There are trees down in the canal, and even though the 10-15 inches of rain may have ended the fire in the park, it will probably still be several weeks before the canal can be open to navigation. All Corp Of Engineers equipment and crews are currently focusing on Great Bridge Lock.

Lambs Marina (on the AICW/Dismal Swamp Canal/Pasquotank River Alternate Route, Statute Mile 47
Well sheltered Lambs Marina reports no damage and operation as usual. Both gasoline and diesel fuel (via tanker truck) are being pumped

Elizabeth City, NC (on the AICW/Dismal Swamp Canal/Pasqotank River
We spoke by telephone with an Elizabeth City official the morning of 8/30/11, and were informed that the Mariners Wharf city docks, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, on Pasquotank River, sustained virtually no damage and are open for business as usual. We were further told that general damage in Elizabeth City consisted of flooding at “the places that always flood,” and downed trees and yards filled with debris. Most residents either did not lose power, and it has again been turned on. Sounds like Elizabeth City escaped the worst effects of Hurricane Irene.

Hertford, NC – off Albemarle Sound on the Perquimans River
Even though the charming community of Hertford, NC has no marinas (YET!), it is still one of our favorite North Carolina ports of call. We just love to anchor upstream of the “S” bridge, dinghy ashore and experience this piece of Americana, time after time. So, it is with real pleasure we learn that Hertford came through Hurricane Irene in good shape:
      Hi Claiborne,
Downtown Hertford fared extremely well — only branches and a few trees — nothing serious. We really feel like we dodged a bullet here. I just love Hertford, too. We came from Northern Virginia, and I always tell the people here I should wear a t-shirt that says, “I’m not from here, but I got here as fast as I could!” I’m so glad I found this peaceful place!!
We always enjoy your visits here. Hope to see you again soon!
      Captain Carol

Pelican Marina (Elizabeth City) reports no significant damage and business as usual. All dockside power and water connections are up and running.

Coinjock, NC (on the AICW, just south of the NC – Virginia state line)
By telephone research, we learned that Coinjock Marina and Restaurant are open and operating normally. During Irene’s passage there was a “little bit of water in the dockhouse” and power was off for some 24 hours, but it’s now back on. This facility is ready to accept cruising visitors!

Midway Marina, also in Coinjock, reports no damage and both marina and restaurant are operating normally

Albemarle Sound (west of the AICW’s passage across the sound)
Albemarle Plantation Marina (on Yeopim River), A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, reports by telephone that their facility is up and operating normally, including the fuel dock. Both on-site restaurants are also open for business. Dockmaster Dave did report one of their docks was “moved” by the storm, but that only affects five slips. Clearly, cruisers can count on receiving their usual warm welcome at Albemarle Plantation
From Hertford, NC — Albemarle Plantation
We got only minimal damage here — a few trees down here and there — and all anchored boats did great. Marina will be back open tomorrow for returning boats, and gas pumps (gas and diesel) are intact and ready for service.
      Carol Naughton
      “Big Kahuna”

Edenton, NC (on western Albemarle Sound)

The city dockmaster at the Edenton Town Docks reports no damage to their docks, and dockside power had been restored as of the the morning of 8/31/11. Edenton Town Docks are open for business, and are accepting transients.

Edenton Marina (on Pembroke Creek) reports by telephone that they sustained “very little damage” and are operating normally.

Wharf Landing Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, on the waters at the confluence of Albemarle Sound and the Chowan River, just west of Edenton, reports no damage and normal operations. The person I spoke with said they were “very, very lucky.”

Mackeys Ferry Marina (off the southern shores of Albemarle Sound, on Kendrick or Mackeys Creek)
Spoke with the folks at Mackeys Marina Tuesday morning, 8/30/11. The report no dock damage, which is to be expected in their super sheltered location. The marina and restaurant’s power is off at this time, and they are trying to keep the restaurant off refrigerated by running generators. They have no idea when power will be restored, and, obviously, the restaurant can not reopen until the power situation is resolved. The docks are open, and transients are being accepted. Furthermore, we were told that any number of commercial fishing craft and entered and exited the creek safely from and to Albemarle Sound, so the channel would seem to be reasonably clear.

Columbia, NC (on the Scuppernong River off the southern shores of Albemarle Sound)
Cypress Cove Marina reports some damage to electrical outlets in their ship’s store, but their docks are fine. They are taking a few days to clean up, but expect to be back in full operation by Wednesday, 8/31/11

Columbia Town docks report some damage, with several boards being lifted off the docks, and some others uneven. By telephone, they said it will be a “couple of weeks” before they will again be ready to take visitors

Manteo, NC (on Roanoke Island, between the Croatan and Roanoke Sounds, north of Pamlico Sound)
Talked with Carl Jordan, dockmaster at city owned (and a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR) Manteo Waterfront Marina. He stated that the town of Manteo had the worst flooding “ever.” At one point there was some 5 feet of water on the downtown Manteo streets. Carl told us he had to wade through water up to his “chin” to get home.
Happily, there was very little damage to the docks, and power has been restored. Manteo Waterfront Marina is once again open, and ready for business.
Carl also stated he had some 10 slips that he was keeping open for vessels that had been displaced from nearby Oregon Inlet fishing center, which was apparently seriously hammered by Irene. He plans to afford temporary free dockage for these vessels. What a CLASS operation!

Pirate’s Cove Yacht Club & Marina (on Roanoke Sound, south of Manteo and Shallowbag Bay)
This facility reports quite a bit of flooding, “over the docks” during Irene’s passage, but none of the docks were torn away, and the marina is back in operation. Some power pedestals were not functioning at the time of our phone call, but we were told, “they are working on them now.” Diesel fuel is being pumped, and gasoline will be available at some time in the near future. Transients are being accepted.

North Carolina Outer Banks, Including Hatteras Village and Ocracoke Island
In spite of repeated and persistent attempts, the Salty Southeast Cruisers’ Net has not been able to reach any marina facilities in Hatteras Village or Ocracoke Island. That is probably because, as we have learned from news reports, Highway 12 has been cut in multiple places by tidal overwash, north of Hatteras. Reports also specify that power has been cut to Hatteras and Ocracoke, and we suspect that holds true for telephone service as well. We will immediately report any change in this situation as soon as it occurs. For the moment, we suggest that cruisers consider the various marinas in Hatteras and Ocracoke as either closed, or operating at a diminished capacity.

Anchorage Marina (Silver Lake Harbor, Ocracoke)
And, here’s a report on Ocracoke, received, 8/31/11
Talked with Mike at Anchorage Inn Marina, Ocracoke Island today and he said the Island was still under an evacuation order until power was restored, except for residents. Power comes from Hatteras and because of the damage they project power will be off for 4-6 weeks. Therefore they are accepting no transients or visitors.
      John Rebholz

Dowry Creek Marina (off the AICW/Pungo River, Statute Mile 131.5)
Just received this update from owner/dockmaster Mary Klapprich, on Friday morning, 9/2/11
      Good morning Clairborne,
Just a quick update on Dowry Creek Marina in Belhaven, NC. We fared very well except still do not have power as a transformer poled snapped. Docks and buildings are intact and hopefully will be totally open within a couple of weeks. More postings to come when I have power.
      Thanks.
      Mary

Belhaven (on the AICW/Pungo River at Statute Mile 135.5

      River Forest Manor and Marina
SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR River Forest Manor and Marina reports “lots of damage.” Limited dockage is available, and the dockside power hookups on one dock are still working. No fuel is being pumped at this time. Haul-outs are available via the travelift at the nearby repair yard.

      Belhaven Waterway Marina (Belhaven waterfront)
We spoke with co-owner Les Porter at SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Belhaven Waterway Marina, the morning of 9/08/11, and were very pleased to learn that ALL REPAIRS HAD BEEN COMPLETED, and this fine facility is open for business as usual. All dockside power connections are functional, and Brenda and Les are waiting to receive cruising visitors. Stop by and tell them we sent you!

Pungo Creek Marina (Statute Mile 136, off the AICW/Pungo River, on Pungo Creek)
We reached the good folks at Pungo Creek Marina the morning of 8/30/11. We were informed they did have some flooding damage to their docks, and their dockside power pedestals are currently out of commission, but they do have dockage available for transients. However, they are not pumping fuel at this time, as their fuel pumps have floated off somewhere.

Washington, NC – off the AICW on Pamlico River:

McCotters Marina (off Pamlico River, on Broad Creek, a few miles downstream of the Washington, NC waterfront)
SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, McCotters Marina sustained substantial damage due to flooding on its south and middle docks. In a telephone conversation the morning of 8/31/11, we were told that McCotters is “open for business,” and boats are being reallocated to the two surviving piers. Transients will be accepted, but wet slip space is obviously reduced, so call ahead of your arrival to check on availability. McCotters hopes to again start hauling boats by late today (8/31/11) or tomorrow.

And, here are some photos of McCotters Marina and Captain Sam’s Boatyard, courtesy of Captain Chris Burti:

As of 8/29/11, the Lynn Lewis, Washington, NC’s Director of Devleopment, reports that the city docks are still closed, but, thankfully, not due to damage:
Docks remained closed. They did not sustain any damage, but due to high water levels an electrical inspection will have to be completed. As information becomes available, I’ll pass it along.
      Lynn Lewis

The RR Trestle Bridge with a closed vertical clearance of 7ft crosses the Pamlico River in the heart of Washington, NC HAS REOPENED AS OF 1:30 PM, 7/29/11

Vessels Washed Into RR Trestle Bridge - Washington, NC

      Neuse River
      Claiborne
Please remind people that there is alot of debris floating around out there now…trees, limbs, etc…there were many limb and large sticks in the waters around our marina that would damage a boat if hit hard…as the days go by and people start taking boats out they need to be aware of that.
      Bobbi Lancaster
And we asked Captain Lancaster to please identify her home marina:
Point Marina, Whortonsville, nc…7 miles from Oriental, NC…I am part of the www.NCSail.org crowd that invited you to a grog several years ago….there is a lot of debris in the water on the Neuse.
      Thanks,
      Bobbi Lancaster

River Dunes Marina (Statute Mile 173.5. off the Neuse River, of Broad Creek)
If any marina on the NC coast could come through a hurricane with minimal damage, it’s SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, River Dunes. You wont’ find many more sheltered harbors than this one!

We had a full marina, and JC did a great job of keeping everything secure. No damage to any boats or docks. Minimal damage to some landscaping around the marina. River Dunes fared very well in the storm.
We are accepting transients at River Dunes. We are pumping gas and diesel; however, pump-out service is not available at this time. Shore power may also be limited.
      Sherwood Crawford

River Dunes had water to within two feet of the piling caps.Just as designed ,everything held up fine.We had one 80 footer in a slip that broke one piling and that was it.We had 53 visiting yachts from Oriental and Morehead City weathering the storm with us.With property owners boats and others we had 100 boats here for Irene.Tour preparedness plan was followed to the letter(after much persuasion on my part) and it resulted in no damage whatsoever to any vessel.
All homes on the property held up perfectly.Lots of landscaping issues and that is about it.
      J. C. Cappelmann
      Director of Operations

As can be seen from the post Hurricane Irene photo below, River Dunes came through the storm very well indeed:

      Oriental, NC
We finally got through to the dockmaster at Whittaker Pointe Marina, Monday afternoon, 8/29/11. He stated that Oriental had flooding, with two feet of water in Toucan and M&M Restaurants during the height of Hurricane Irene’s passage. The water rose so high at nearby Sailcraft Service, that his boat was floated off the jack stands, and began to float away. The yard owner swam after the boat, got aboard, and anchored the vessel safely. Boy, talk about going beyond the call of duty.
The dockmaster also said that his marina had sustained damage to 10 finger piers, and while he had already reopened, it would take a week or so before he could again receive transients.

As of 2:15 pm, 8/30/11, we heard from Captain Bama Lutes Deal, proprietor of SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Village Food Emporium in Oriental. Bama states that power service began to return to Oriental last night (8/29/11), and is now being turned back on, on a street by street, grid by grid, basis. As she put it, “things look a lot brighter today than yesterday.”
Village Food Emporium reopened 8/31/11. They had no damage, and were able to keep their food cold during the entire process by generator power.
Bama also noted that her cafe has working Wi-Fi which extends to her side porch. So, if anyone need to e-mail home, please come to Village Food Emporium, bring your laptop, and let the folks at home know what’s happening! What a class offer from a classy lady and business!!!!

We have not been able to get in touch by telephone with SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Oriental Marina and Toucan Grill and Fresh Bar, but, hoping they won’t mind, we have lifted the report below from TownDock.net.
Oriental Marina Inn / Toucan Grill / Tiki Bar: Tom McIlhenny says the Tiki Bar will be back in biz Monday afternoon starting at 4p, even if there is no power (there will be beer & ice coolers). The Toucan Grill has already been cleaned out and is awaiting power restoration – they hope to be in operation before the weekend. The Inn was flooded in the 1st floor units, but the second floor units were unaffected. With power back, the Inn is open. The first floor units are being cleaned (cleaning crews were there Sunday), however their availability is not yet known.

Here’s a GREAT link to an article on Oriental’s Town Dock.net web site, that gives a run down of businesses in Oriental – what is open, and what is not, and when they might reopen:

Clubfoot Creek, off the southern shores of Neuse River, off the AICW
Matthews Point Marina reports significant damage to one set of their piers. The rest of the marina remains open, and transients are still being accepted. It’s just that with the loss of that one pier, they can’t take as many visitors. Overflow is being shuttled to Mattews Point’s sister facility, Morehead City Yacht Basin.

Northwest Creek Marina (off the north shores of Neuse River, between Oriental and New Bern)
As of Tuesday afternoon, 8/30/11, Northwest Creek Marina reports they have just gotten power back to their building, but there is no power on the dock, and all the power pedestals will probably have to be rewired before dockside power can be restored. They hope to begin pumping fuel by the labor day weekend, but that will depend on the status of their pumps, which were flooded. In spite of suffering only minor dock damage otherwise, transients are NOT being accepted at this time.

New Bern, NC (off the AICW on Neuse River)
Galley Stores Marina (A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR) reports no damage, and they are operating as usual. The person we spoke with said that dockmaster, Mark Mangum, reported water levels rose “close” to the back door of the ship’s store, but never got into the building. So, Galley Stores is ready for cruising visitors!

Bridge Pointe Marina, on the Trent River, just opposite the New Bern waterfront reports significant damage to their dockside electrical systems, and say they are “shut down” for “several weeks,” at least as far as visiting craft are concerned.

Sea Gate Marina (Statute Mile 194. on the Core Creek section of the AICW between Neuse River and Beaufort)
Sea Gate marina reports no damage, and business as usual. Transients are being accepted, and fuel pumped.

      Beaufort, NC
We have learned that the Beaufort City Docks “came through in good shape,” and are currently taking some of the vessels displaced by the damage at Town Creek Marina (see below). We don’t yet know what kind of flooding Beaufort experienced.
Town Creek Marina in Beaufort, had extensive hurricane damage, and a goodly number of its vessels have had to seek dockage elsewhere. Here is confirmation:

Confirmation that the docks at Town Creek marina in Beaufort were destroyed. Here is a link to the Carteret News-Times article:

      Morehead City

      Morehead City Yacht Basin
Spoke with marina manager, Neil Littman at SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Morehead City Yacht Basin. He reports almost no damage at his facility, and they are fully open for business, “with bells on” and pumping fuel. Neil also reports that some of the restaurants on the Morehead City waterfront suffered some flooding, with a foot or two of water inside, but “nothing that hasn’t happened many times before.”

      Morehead City Docks
In a telephone interview Wednesday afternoon, 8/31/11, it was was reported to the Cruisers’ Net that the Morehead City docks suffered no damage, and all dockside power connections were functioning.

      Swansboro, NC (Statute Mile 229)

      Dudleys Marina
As of the afternoon of 8/31/11, Dudleys Marina reports significant dock damage. Gasoline is being pumped, but no diesel fuel yet. Transients are not being accepted at this time, and probably will not be until some of the docks can be repaired.

      Casper’s Marine Service
Caspers reports no dock damage, but there is no power on the dock, as the marina wisely removed all their power pedestals before the passage of Hurricane Irene. Gasoline and diesel fuel are being pumped. Transients are being accepted on a space available basis, but we were told wet slip space is at a premium until after Labor Day.

Beachhouse Marina (Statute Mile 260.5, Surf City, NC)
Talked with the dockmaster at Beachhouse Marina Tuesday afternoon, 8/30/11. He said that Hurricane Irene hit them “just right” when the tide was out and the wind direction did not directly impact their facility. He reports normal operation, fuel being pumped, and transients being accepted.

Harbour Village Marina (Statute Mile 266, between Surf City and Wrightsville Beach)
Due to extensive pre-preparation, Harbour Village reports no damage, and normal operations. Dockside power is fine, fuel is being pumped and transients accepted.

Wrightsville Beach, NC, near Statute Mile 280

      Bridge Tender Marina
This facility reports no damage, and business as usual. Power is fine on the docks, fuel is being pumped and transients accepted. The person we spot with said “the storm wasn’t so bad in our area.”

Dockside Marina also reports no damage, normal operation and business as usual.

Seapath Yacht Club (off the AICW on Motts Channel)
Seapath Yacht Club reports no significant damage. Marina is open and operating normally. All dockside power connections are functioning, fuel is being pumped, and transients accepted.

      Wilmington, NC
Local news in Wilmington says the Coast Guard is requesting boaters not go out in the water way etc.today as there has been a lot of debris reported to them that could prove to be a danger to boaters and swimmers alike.
      Regards,
      Captain Mike

Deep Creek Marina (on the AICW’s Run through Cape Fear River, Statute Mile 307)
By way of a telephone conversation late in the day, 8/30/11, we were happily informed that SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS NET SPONSOR, Deep Point Marina sustained no substantial damage from Hurricane Irene. Deep Creek is open for business as usual; dock power is fine, fuel is being pumped and transients accepted.

Bald Head Island Marina (mouth of Cape Fear River)
SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR Bald Head Island Marina reports only minimal damage from Hurricane Irene. As of the morning of 8/31/11, the marina is operating normally, with full shore power connections, fuel is being pumped and transients accepted.

      Barefoot Resort Marina
We fared well, some wind and rain, boats were all secured well, no real damage except for some sails that came unfurled. Everyone was on top of the issue and all went well. We were lucky with this one.
      Captain Morgan

      Southern Myrtle Beach:

Osprey Marina (Statute Mile 373.5, on the AICW in southern Myrtle Beach)
Everyone here is very glad to hear that SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Osprey Marina came through Irene with no damage. That doesn’t really surprise us, however, as this marina is one of the most sheltered you will find anywhere!

We weathered Irene at Osprey Marina near Myrtle Beach. Slept like babies. No damage, minimal winds ~40 kts. No damage in the entire marina.
Left this AM going north. Now at Provision Company restaurant dock in Southport NC. A few tree branches and one damaged dock on the way, otherwise everything seemed normal. No shallow spots encountered.
Will be moving north tomorrow. Destination Chesapeake.

Port Royal Landing Marina (on the Beaufort River, just south of Beaufort, SC)
      Claiborne,
Thank you for this service to our mutual friends and customers. At Port Royal Landing Marina, in the Beaufort/Port Royal area of South Carolina, one of our boaters clocked wins up to 45 MPH, but mostly it was well below that. There was no damage here at all; not even any torn canvas. Saturday night we were again able to provide the venue for the annual Friends of Caroline Hospice “Cheeseburgers in Paradise” fundraising event with over three hundred participants, and it was a beautiful evening enjoyed by all. .
We remain open and eager for business. On the other hand, we realize how very fortunate we have been, and we will keep our friends to the north in our thoughts and prayers.

      Bahamas:

      Staniel Cay

Welcome to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, your own paradise in the middle of the beautiful Exumas.Thank goodness SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Staniel Cay, only received minor damage from Hurricane Irene. Sounds like they are very much still open for business!

Haven’t heard about points south. Everyone at Staniel is fine….local homes not really damaged. Some of the second homes (more waterfront) had roof damage. SCYC had minor dock damage but other docks were pretty bad (the ones to our north along the rocks). We lost a big tree that fell on our pool deck. Other than that, basically just a bunch of mess to clean up.
      Regards,
      David

      Sampson Cay

      Hello,
