AGLCA’s Facebook Page Hacked – Reported by Peter Swanson
Our thanks to Peter Swanson for alerting us to this malicious attack.
The American Great Loop Cruisers Association’s public Facebook page has been taken over by malicious actors, and its administrators go by the names Chaudry Mubashar and Raja Mehboob.
“The Great Loop public Facebook group was hacked sometime between about 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Eastern Time on December 13, 2024. We recognized the problem within about an hour.” said Kim Russo, executive director of the AGLCA.
“The hackers replaced our admins with people unknown to us. We contacted Facebook support immediately and will continue to do so until we get resolution. Facebook support has assured us multiple times that they are working on it,” she said.
Russo said the descriptives “hostile takeover” and “malicious actors” were overly dramatic. Nevertheless, she urged the page’s 161,000 followers to exercise caution.
“So far, we can spot nothing malicious aimed at individual group members. The hackers are not impersonating AGLCA,” Russo said. “However, AGLCA recommends members of the association move to our members-only, private Facebook group and leave the public group, or refrain from posting until we’ve regained control.”
Made aware of the hack, cruiser Sean Welsh posted warnings on other Facebook cruiser groups on the theory that some of them were also followers of the AGLCA’s public page. He surmised that any post to that effect on the hacked page would be promptly taken down by the new admins and that he would be blocked.
