Hi please could you give me advise I’m a 1.5 m draft Catamaran . We routing to Cuba via Ragged Islands . On Chart 32 the routing through Hogs Cay Cut the chart depth at the chart point 23 23 50 N 75 30 80 W shows 1.1 m . Garmin is showing me 0.3m at this point . Does anyone please have an opinion on this ? Should we re route via Long Island ? On tide if Explorer is correct we would get through .

    • Navigating the Bahamas by Greg Allard

Cruisers Net is so very grateful for Greg Allard’s willingness to share his vast experience with our readers. Inspired by one of Greg Allard’s several Letters from the Bahamas, Judye Reed wrote Cruisers Net asking Greg for advice on navigating the Bahamas. Here is Greg’s response.

      In reply to Judye Reed.
Judye – One of the great advantages of being based in Florida is the relatively easy access to one of the greatest cruising grounds in the world: The Bahamas. To successfully navigate your boat to this international destination, you will need to do much more planning and preparation than you would for a local trip along the coast of Florida. That means a current version of electronic charts, and one or more of the Explorer Chartbooks, which are much more than just charts: they are loaded with information about cruising to the Bahamas, crossing the Florida Straits (Gulf Stream), and each location you may visit. There are three sets of Explorer Chartbooks, one for each geographic area of the Bahamas. Get the one(s) for where you are going.

With the horrendous damage Dorian inflicted on the Abacos – a traditional destination for first-timers and veteran cruisers – most of the Abacos is no longer an option for the immediate future, since facilities are non-existent in many places.
From St. Pete, your first decision will be whether to cross to the east coast of Florida via the Okeechobee, or to go down through the Keys. The Okeechobee option requires sufficient water depth along “Navigation Route 1” (which changes daily), something you can find in the on-line reporting by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. w3.saj.usace.army.mil/h2o/c#835
Don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you cruise your boat at 20 knots, a passage from Lake Worth inlet to West End on Grand Bahama will take about three hours. Reports are that West End is fully open after Dorian. The other regular crossing route to the Bahamas is from Miami/Ft. Lauderdale to Bimini. The Miami run is about 45 nautical miles.
A general rule about crossing the Florida Straits to the Bahamas: Don’t go if there are any winds with a north component: the 2-3+ knot northward flow of the Gulf Stream, pushing against any opposing winds from the north, creates standing waves which can be nasty.
Wherever possible, we try to limit our passages to five hours a day, but we travel at 10 knots. There is no point, on your first trip to the Bahamas, of doing long grueling runs.
Look at each leg for a few things: 1) Weather (the most important one), 2) What facilities will you need at the destination? If you want to anchor, are there good, protected anchorages? Do you want to dock at a marina? If so, you should call ahead to be certain there is an opening for you. 3) Distance? Don’t plan on a four hour run and then leave at 2:00 PM. If you encounter trouble of any sort, you’ll have a good bit of daylight to sort things out. Depart early in the morning.
Never leave for the next destination if the weather is bad, or even doubtful. We review the weather several times a day. Here’s a link to an article on Cruisers Net, which I published: “Weather Resources for Cruisers.”
      https://cruisersnet.net/weather-resources-for-cruisers-by-greg-allard/
You say that you are looking for another boat to travel with. That can be good, but some people who do that rely on “the other boat” to tell them when and where to go. To go to the Bahamas, you need to be totally self-reliant. Plan ahead, study the charts, review the weather.
“Buddy Boating” – traveling with one or several boats, often gives cruisers false reliance; they depend on someone else to make the decisions for them. We do travel with another boat on occasion, but we have a clear understanding between us, especially on open water passages, that we are basically there for each other to “rescue the survivors.” We can’t swim over to the other boat in 3′ seas to help with a mechanical problem; we can’t (and won’t) tow the other boat; we can’t help them put out a fire. And if you have to constantly communicate with the other boat for directions, depths, etc., you have not done your preparation, and you shouldn’t be out there.
I don’t mean to discourage you from traveling with another boat, which can be fun; you should just be certain to do your planning – and make your decisions – as if you were the only boat going.
Start with ordering and reading from cover to cover the Explorer Chartbooks for the areas you want to visit. If you study them, you will know more than 90% of first-timers who go to the Bahamas. This site, Cruisers Net, has several articles and much information about Bahamas cruising, the Okeechobee crossing, etc. It’s easy to search for that helpful information.

Another publication, Southwinds, also has a number of articles with practical information about Bahamas cruising. Here’s the link:
      https://southwindsmagazine.com/cruising-the-bahamas/
If you are looking for another boat to travel with, you can post your plans here on Cruisers’ Net, on the Explorer Chartbook site, or on any other cruisers’ forum. You may find that it is difficult to coordinate your departure times with other boats, but it is worth a try. By the way, the months of May & June are the best months to go.
      Have a good trip!
      Greg Allard

    • Praise for Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club’s Relief Efforts for the Bahamas

      Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club

Our thanks to Jim Lund for these good words for the fund raising efforts of RMHYC as posted on AGLCA’s Forum. See also Report from RMHYC, the Hope for Abaco Concert and Hurricane Dorian Relief Funds.

Many Loopers have done a side trip to the Bahamas – for us it was a highlight. We continue our membership with the Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club (RMYYC). As many know, Marsh Harbour and much of the Abacos were obliterated by Hurricane Dorian. This year the RMHYC is donating all of their annual membership fees to the relief/rebuilding efforts on the Abacos.

They have also advised members that a benefit concert with all proceeds going to rebuilding the Bahamas will be held in Stuart Fla on Dec 14th. Tickets are fully tax deductible (not sure about us Canadians). I’ve been to Barerfoot Man concert at Nippers in the Bahamas – what a hoot! He is a staple in the Caribbean music scene and will be appearing with several other professional acts.

Soooooo…. if you’re thinking of a trip to the Bahamas in the future, consider joining the RMHYC now. Its very inexpensive and they have discounts and reciprocal arrangements throughout the Bahamas Our membership had paid for itself before we even made it to Marsh Harbour. More info can be found here: RMHYC.

And if you want to have a fun afternoon of laid back, fun tropical music, I hope to see you Dec 14. More info here: Hope for Abaco Concert

Jim, Thanks for your kind words. The RMHYC has temporarily relocated itself at the Harborage Marina in Stuart this year. Once the renewal season closes at the end of December, we will be donating all of the renewal dollars collected to the relief effort. There are many fine organizations that have "boots on the ground" in Marsh Harbor and the surrounding area. Our job will be to choose the one(s) that we believe fit best with our purpose statement which reads in part "to provide equipment, grants and other support services to persons or community organizations in the Marsh Harbour vicinity for the benefit of the cruising community". The cruising community will benefit most if the area can become Open for Business as quick as possible. Then cruisers can travel safely to the area and further infuse the economy of the Abacos.

The official start of new cruising permit entry fees for The Bahamas is scheduled for January 1, 2020. However, when we talked to a high level Customs official in Nassau, we were told that the new fees were in effect now. Even so, we have confirmation from boaters that have recently arrived in the Bahamas that there are no changes to the cruising fees. We can hope that there will be an indefinite delay in enforcing the new schedule, but anything can happen any time!

      New Customs fees question

      Posted: 07 Nov 2019 02:09 PM PST

I see the new fees for a 35 foot boat are $300 for three months and $600 for a year. What are the fees for 4 months?? Is it that you have three months at $300, then after that you have to pay for the entire year at $600 more or is it $300 more making it $600 for the year? If you are checking in and want to stay 4-5 months do you just pay the $600 for the year then?? Please only reply if you are sure of your answer. Thanks.
PS I like the idea of reciprocating the US entry fee for Bahamian boats coming to the USA.

I have confirmation from boaters that have recently arrived in the Bahamas that there are no changes to the cruising fees. No one knows what will happen in 2020. The Bahamian government has a history of announcing changes effective immediately.

Although none of this has been tested yet as I understand the new fees do not go into effect until January 2020 I would imagine that it would work much like before. When you check in you buy a cruising permit. In the past, that was good for a year and cost $xx. Now you only get 3 months for $xx or a year for twice that amount. So when you check in you should know which you want to purchase. Do not confuse the cruising permit which is "attached" to the vessel with a visa which is "attached" to the individual person(s). In the past we have been granted 150 day visas and other times the max that they would give was 90 days. The visa can be renewed by appearing in person at the appropriate place. For us this was in the Marsh Harbor government building. I don't know how that is working mow. It would be best to request as much time as you can get the first time so as not to need it renewed.

Just looking for any information on the general conditions of Long Island and Acklins-Crooked Islands regarding storm damages. We were at Long Island in 2015, before hurricane Joaquin, and are leaving SC in a few weeks, heading back down. I plan to call some marinas and businesses there but have not done that yet. Has anyone been there recently, or have any good current info?

As you prepare for a trip to The Bahamas, be aware of changes to the charges and length of stay given on your cruising permit.

The new policy on fees for pleasure vessels clearing into the Bahamas is:

Under 35ft–$150 for 3 months; $300 per year.

      35-100ft– $300 for 3 months; $600 per year.

      100-150ft–$500 for 3 months; $1,000 per year.

      Press Release

PM Minnis opens debate on amendments to Disaster Preparedness and Response Act

      Date:October 10, 2019

The Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, Management and Reconstruction is in the process of deploying temporary housing for government employees on Abaco, Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis announced in the House of Assembly on Wednesday in his second communication on Hurricane Dorian response and recovery efforts.

The Prime Minister said 100 RV trailers will accommodate 300 critical government personnel, who will play an essential role in reconstruction and recovery. A protocol is being determined for the relocation of individuals back to Abaco.

A land site next to the Spring City subdivision on Abaco is also being prepared to create the Family Relief Centre, which will serve as temporary housing accommodations for families affected by Hurricane Dorian.

The Family Relief Centre will comprise 250 dome structures that will include plumbing, drainage, a sewer system and electricity. Each dome can accommodate four to five people. The estimated cost for this facility is $6.4 million.

Land is being prepared and trenching will begin this week. Materials for the infrastructure work are scheduled to arrive on Abaco next week, said Prime Minister Minnis.

“The response to Hurricane Dorian is a comprehensive and global effort led and coordinated by the Government of The Bahamas,” said the Prime Minister. “The full resources of the Government are being deployed.”

Another essential part of the recovery and rebuilding effort is the relocation of schoolchildren, teachers and other education personnel, said Prime Minister Minnis.

So far approximately 1,400 students have been registered and the Ministry of Education is in the process of tracking down the balance of the 2,500 students who were registered at schools in Abaco before Dorian struck The Bahamas.

Some of these students are in other Family Islands, reported the Prime Minister. Some are in private schools. Some went directly to government-operated schools in New Providence, and did not come through the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium for registration as requested.

Approximately 300 students remained in Abaco, not all of whom are in schools, and some students have traveled to the United States.

“We know also that 50 students are at schools in Andros, and that more than 150 are being accommodated on Eleuthera,” said Prime Minister Minnis.

“Tragically, it is also likely that there are some school children among the persons still not accounted for in Abaco.”

In East Grand Bahama, four schools sustained significant damage, and will require extensive repairs, which will require an extensive amount of time. There was also major damage in Central Abaco.

There were some schools which sustained substantial damage but have since been repaired enough to accommodate students and have been brought up to standard to receive students for classes for half of the school day, said the Prime Minister.

Five schools in northern and southern Abaco are open but are operating on reduced hours as a result of self-help efforts from teachers and community members.

Counselling sessions, led by staff of the Employee Assistance Programme, in conjunction with the Bahamas Psychological Services were also carried out, the Prime Minister reported.

The Ministry of Education is awaiting advice from the Ministry of Works on the Scopes of Work and costings submitted by Education for the 16 schools needed to be repaired on Grand Bahama.

The estimation thus far is the Ministry of Education’s Hurricane Dorian relief budget will come in at approximately $20 million.

      Posted: 14 Oct 2019 06:51 AM PDT

at the moment, we have one dock fully functioning that can probably accommodate a 100′ boat and probably 12-14 boats from 20′ to 70 ‘  with water and electric.
Probably in the next month or two, our rooms will all be available to rent as well. We already have 5 or 6 rooms that are ready to rent.

The restaurant and the bar, as well as the pool are all open. Of course ,we have a limited menu at the moment.

      Posted: 14 Oct 2019 06:36 AM PDT

From owner of Harbour View Marina, Marsh Harbour:
Everything was completely destroyed.  Our goals for this coming year are as follows.

      1. Get Wally’s reopened since the building survived.
      2. Rebuild the docks.
      3. Have Blue Wave Rentals operational for the spring and summer season.
      4. A temporary office for the Marina and Blue Wave Rentals is already on the island.
      5. A long term plan for the rebuilding of the Marina buildings is being developed.

Don’t know what the future holds but we are committed to rebuilding better than ever.

      Posted: 12 Oct 2019 11:35 AM PDT

We’re okay here in Little Harbour. Being 10 miles south of the eye really spared us the devastation in Marsh Harbour and the cays. We have minor roof damage.

We’ve been putting out updates since the storm. Check our website at petespubandgallery.com

Pete’s Pub Staff still needs our help.
90% of the staff have been displaced, mostly to Nassau. Most of them had to flee their home with children in the middle of the storm. All staff are now accounted for and safe for the time being.
Now, they are either in shelters, staying with family or trying to rent and start over.
We have a multi-pronged purpose to our goal. We want them safe and secure and home as soon as possible. This includes helping to fund their current room and board, finding stable housing, schooling for their kids and ultimately securing housing for them on Abaco.
We are asking for your help. If you cannot attend , please contribute what you can and thank you for your generosity.

      Abaco Update 11/11/19

      Posted: 12 Oct 2019 11:14 AM PDT

This is the current information we have for the Abacos following the unprecedented devastation of Hurricane Dorian. Please feel free to comment with new information. The picture is ever-changing with steps being taken to begin the rebuilding of lives and structures. We are awaiting email reports from all the marinas in the Abacos and will post new info when we get it. The same with Grand Bahama. No news from there yet.

The numbers are staggering in the Abacos:  With only 54 identified as deceased, there are still 1,300 people missing and 70,000 displaced. Many bodies are beyond identification.  70% of the islanders have lost their homes and most businesses suffered catastrophic loss.

      FERRY SERVICE

One BOLO ferry survived at Green Turtle Cay. The others were damaged or sunk. HopeTown, Man-o-War and Guana Cay ferries were damaged or sunk. None currently operational.

      SPANISH CAY

Spanish Cay is selling fuel. No other update available.

      GREEN TURTLE CAY

The GREEN TURTLE CLUB is partially open. They have dockage and fuel but no water or electricity at the dock. Cash is required since without electricity and Internet, the Club can’t process credit cards. The channel into White Sound is clear of debris. The Club expects to be fully operational with food and beverages, rooms, villas, dockage, fuel, water, chandlery, and gift shop by March 1, 2020.

BRENDAL’S DIVE SHOP is recovering and opening soon.

      McINTOSH’S is serving food.

PHONE:  ALIV cell phones are working and can be used as hotspots for Internet service.

BLUFF HOUSE sustained major destruction to the docks and buildings. There are no docks, no services there at the present time.

The same with the OTHER SHORE CLUB in Black Sound. Their main dock from the land is partially secured, but the outer pier with fuel and dockage is destroyed, so there is no way to get ashore and no facilities there.

LEEWARD YACHT CLUB had damage to its building and part of the piers. Boats were sunk there. No services are available.

ABACO YACHT SERVICES had many long-term storage boats fall off cradles and suffer damage.

Construction has already begun to restore homes and businesses and clear endless piles of debris. There is no water or electricity in the town. Some people have their own generators. Relief efforts continue with locals and outside volunteers coming in to help with construction, food, medical care, etc. The school miraculously survived as a shelter for the entire town until after the hurricane passed. The road that extends the length of the cay is open. Freight boats have been coming in with supplies and construction crews. A BobCat loader was donated to help fill the dump trucks with massive piles of debris. Watermakers has come in to help with supplying bottled drinking water for the islanders and construction crews. Also crews have set up a kitchen for workers with basic meals.

      BAKERS BAY

Many houses were destroyed but the marina fared better than most in the area with docks mostly intact.

      TREASURE CAY

Many boats were sunk at the marina. The fuel dock is gone but we understand that they are somehow selling fuel.

      HOPETOWN

See earlier letter from Lighthouse Marina concerning the extent of damages. The entire inner harbour had many buildings completely wiped out, including the Harbour Lodge and Captain Jacks. We are awaiting a report from Hope Town Marina. Farther south on Elbow Cay, Sea Spray Marina and resort were leveled.

      MARSH HARBOUR

      Maxwell’s Supermarket & Home Store

      October 9 at 7:35 PM

We’re excited to announce we plan for a soft opening on Thursday, November 7th!!

The supermarket is now almost back to rights!

As shipping and delivery logistics are starting to improve, grocery orders have now been placed. We’re still waiting on a few more register computers and refrigeration parts which we should receive by next week.

In an effort to help restore commerce on Abaco, we’re also very pleased to announce that Commonwealth Bank will be opening a satellite branch within Maxwell’s.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to serving you again very soon!

      Stay tuned for further updates

      Maxwell’s

      MARINAS

We are expecting to get first-hand reports from the five marinas in Marsh Harbour (Boat Harbour at Abaco Beach Resort, Conch Inn, Mangoes, Harbour View and Marsh Harbour Marina.) Basically, they were all greatly damaged and there are no services in MH at this time. It remains to be seen which will rebuild and reopen.

      POWER PLANT

The electric power plant on Great Abaco is generating but the poles are all down. There is no electricity north of the plant, virtually north of Little Harbour.

      VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The US Coast Guard came in right away to evacuate the injured and those who had lost homes and all their possessions. Currently, there is much work to be done to rebuild the damaged and destroyed structures on all of these islands. The biggest issue is that volunteers need to be able to sustain themselves with food, water, lodging, electricity and any other supplies. There are no services or accommodations. Those with construction skills (and tools), who also provide their own place to stay such as a cruising boat, are the most helpful in these challenging circumstances. The islanders themselves can’t provide any accommodations for help. Many of them still don’t have roofs on their homes or a reliable source of food and water, not to mention electricity. Check the local websites for direction and information.

    • Automated External Defibrillator for Bahamas National Trust, Donations Requested

      Cruisers Net

      Dear Larry,

I am sailing to Bahamas in January 2020. My travel is for humanitarian purposes, that of assisting the Bahamas National Trust by teaching Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid and other medical skills to their Bahamas Defense Force personnel. The National Trust is involved in rescue operations to islands destroyed by Hurricane Dorian. There is absolutely no cost charged for my services.

Most Defense Force members have little or no training in CPR or first aid. In fact, the unit I am training does not even have an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). As the attached letter states, the Bahamas National Trust is a non-government agency dependent on charitable donations. In this regard I am asking for a donation of monies to purchase an AED to be donated to the land and sea park. The land and sea park is visited by thousands of cruisers each year and the AED would be a life saving device.

I am a registered professional nurse in NY, as well as a certified American Heart association Basic Life Support instructor in CPR, AED and medical first aid.  I have been instructing police and civilian personnel for more than 45 years in CPR, first aid and other subjects. I have a small company that specializes in teaching CPR and other various medical subjects.

I have attached all certifications and letter from the Bahamas National trust to show my intentions. I have been travelling to the Bahamas by private boat for the last 10 years and have conducted such training to many volunteer Fire Departments and Defense force personnel.

I leave by my private boat Oct 27, 2019. If possible, I would need the AED before then. God bless you and thank you for whatever you may decide to donate. Donations may be sent to Anthony Pozun, 127 Deer Lake Dr, North Babylon NY 11703.  All donations go to purchase an AED for the park. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you sincerely.

The Green Turtle Club, though significantly damaged, expects to be fully open by March 1, 2020 with 8 rooms and some villas, marina services of fuel and water, dockage, food and beverages, chandlery and gift shop. Supplies are in and crews are working on rebuilding the Club and the damage to the entire island.

Here is a letter from the proprietors of the Green Turtle Club:

      Dear Friends,

We wanted to reach out and express our most sincere gratitude for the heartwarming support you have shown Green Turtle Club over the many years and now especially in the wake of the most catastrophic event we have ever witnessed. We truly believe the love our loyal guests have for Green Turtle Cay and its people is what makes our home unlike anywhere else in the world. We are blessed to be able to share with you that everyone on Green Turtle Cay, including all our extended family staff members, were spared by this devastating storm.

Green Turtle Cay is undergoing an inspiring recovery effort through the collaboration of resilient locals, generous NGO’s, magnanimous private donors, and the Bahamian Government, all orchestrated through the tireless and cohesive efforts of The Green Turtle Cay Foundation. As many of you have expressed interest in getting involved in rebuild efforts of our beloved island, please consider giving to The Green Turtle Cay Foundation. We have included ways to support this beautiful cause below.

The Green Turtle Club Resort & Marina property experienced substantial damage, but relative to some of our wonderful neighbors, was largely spared. We as a family are committed to Green Turtle Cay and its success and continuation as the friendly slice of paradise we all know and love. We have already begun rebuilding efforts and are welcoming our dedicated staff back home and back to work safely together. We anticipate being able to have each aspect of our business back up and running in steady stages with the achievable goal of being fully operational by March 1, 2020.

We are offering full refunds inclusive of flight packages to all upcoming guests. Beginning on October 7, 2019 Noelle will be reaching out to every upcoming guest individually to process each refund in full. We are unable to take future reservations at this time, but will be very excited to share when possible.

We continue to be inspired by the courage, fellowship, and resilience of every member of our community. It is their strength and spirit that assures us our near future will be better and stronger than ever before.

      Sincerely,
      The Showell Family

      Dear Cruise Abaco Family,

It has been a little over 3 weeks since Hurricane Dorian crossed paths with Abaco. The words “Abaco Strong” are evident all over the islands. There is a flurry of activity everywhere and everyone is doing their part to clean up and make plans for rebuilding a better, stronger future. Ray and Renee’s home have plans for a new roof and it’s nice to see their smiles as they overlook the beautiful Sea Of Abaco! The airport is looking better and not far from opening soon. As you can see, things are moving along and the future is looking brighter for Abaco!

An ongoing thank you to all the folks who are sending in donations, holding fundraisers and/or collecting relief supplies and to those who are tirelessly bringing those relief supplies and medical care…. the community of Abaco just can’t thank all of you enough. A big shout out & THANK YOU to Team Rubicon for helping Cruise Abaco get our staff house a plastic roof so we can get it dried out and begin plans to replace the roof and interior so they can have safe shelter soon. Power poles are going up and new plans are being discussed for adding a solar system along with the grid which is such exciting news for us all.

While this has been a very stressful time with much loss, the community of Abaco is so moved by the tremendous support and love from people all over the globe. We all feel it and appreciate it more than words can say. Abaco’s strength is in the perseverance of the people and it is those people that make Abaco so very special. Everyone is committed to a new beginning so please keep us in your future vacation plans. We’ll let you know when the doors are open, the lights are on and our fleet is sailing again and we will welcome you with open arms!

Disney Confirms Second Bahamas Destination Lighthouse Point

      August 25, 2019

Disney has revealed new information and two early conceptual artist renderings for its second island destination in The Bahamas, which is located on the island of Eleuthera at a place called Lighthouse Point (charted as East End Point) and will serve cruise passengers on an expanding Disney Cruise Line fleet.

Disney Cruise Line completed its purchase of privately owned Lighthouse Point earlier this year and signed an agreement with the Government of The Bahamas that guides the responsible and sustainable way the site will be developed.

According to a press release, Disney has committed to develop less than 20 percent of the property; employ sustainable building practices, including an open-trestle pier that eliminates the need to dredge a ship channel; establish environmental monitoring programs during construction and operation; and donate more than 190 acres of privately owned land to Government, among other commitments.

Construction at Lighthouse Point will begin only after an Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan are reviewed and accepted by the Government of The Bahamas and public consultation has occurred. Construction could begin in 2020 with completion in late 2022 or 2023.

      Dear Cruise Abaco Family,
We wanted to give you an update, while this has been extremely challenging time for all, Mark was able to get to Abaco on a private boat and do an assessment. The community of Abaco are working hard on the clean up and rebuilding will begin soon. Roads are open and they are working hard at the airport to restore commercial flights.
Many of our Haitian staff and their wives and children had to evacuate to Nassau to the gymnasium there for shelter, food and water. We are in the process of trying to secure shelter in Abaco to bring them back and try to get some stability back in their lives and of course kids back in school.
We have a place in Dundas town Marsh Harbour that needs a roof and new drywall etc… that can house at least 10 of our staff so we will be working hard on trying to get this accomplished soon.
In the meantime our Captains will be working hard to help us deliver boats, and other tasks we have to rebuild Cruise Abaco back to where we were as we are all ABACO STRONG! Many of the businesses are trying to open and some have, truly amazing!
We and the staff cannot thank you enough for all the donations you have given and this will go along way to help us get their feet back on the ground, one step at a time.
Please plan to come to Abaco, we will all welcome you with open arms and warm hearts!
Thank you so very much and we will continue to update and have pictures as well to keep you all in our loop!

      Personal Report from Bahamas

      Posted: 11 Sep 2019 02:58 PM PDT

From Fr. Keith Cartwright, Anglican Arch Deacon, Nassau

In order to dispel rumours and untruths, My Priest, who just got back from Marsh Habour 6 am this morning and has been on the ground every day since from the day after storm departed gave our Church a full report on the situation in Marsh Harbour and Grand Bahama. In Marsh Harbour he said that with the exception of a few souls who are still refusing to leave what little they have, the entire affected areas have been completely evacuated. There is nothing left, he said. The stench is unbearable. There are countless medical personnel there doing an excellent job. There is a clean up team on the way from the Netherlands whose function is uncovering, containment & sanitizing of dead bodies and should be there now on the ground.  There are plenty dead and unaccounted for still under debris and swept out to sea.  The bodies they have recovered so far are stored in large constructed coolers run by generators. The clinic and one of the government buildings left standing have been cleaned and sanitized. They are in the process of doing the same to the building that was taken over by the Haitians. He said that the clinic and the two government buildings were the only structures not damaged, which was a testament to the builder who passed away last year.  Also, the uproar about the Bahamasair charging $75 was partly true. He was present at the airport when the flight came in. It was the very first flight and was a regular scheduled flight for Bahamasair. Persons had previously purchase tickets prior to the storm and before consulting with the powers that be, made the decision to charge that fee. My Priest intervened immediately and told them that will not be happening. He got on the phone with the Prime Minister himself and explained what was going on. The Prime Minister then got in contact with the man in charge and was instructed to let that be the first & last flight they charged those people as Bahamasair was the People”s airline etc. etc. Every flight after was completely free and they went above and beyond getting the people out. There was looting and unrest, and order has now been restored. As for Freeport, there is still a lot of flooding and damage although not to the degree of  Abaco. He said there are plenty dead and unaccounted for there as well. He told us stories of survivors who watched loved ones die and got swept away right before them. My head is still spinning from the horrors and grief that I can’t begin to tell you all everything, but this is what I recalled.

      NEMA EVENING BRIEFING – SEPTEMBER 8, 2019

      Posted: 11 Sep 2019 07:09 AM PDT

EVACUATIONS1. There is no mandatory evacuation order for Abaco.
      2. Evacuation is strictly voluntary.
      3. The total number of evacuees to Nassau is approximately 3,500 so far.
      4. There were a number of partners running evacuations today, including Bahamas Air, Delta Airlines, Western Air, Trans Island Air, Air Bridge and other private partners. The Bahamas Fast Ferries and private boaters also did sea evacuations.
      5. The number of persons presenting themselves for evacuations is diminishing.
      6. Evacuees are being processed at The Odyssey Aviation Processing Centre. We thank our private sector partners who are working with Social Services to manage this center.
      7. As a reminder, all evacuations should be free of charge. The public should report any aircraft that are charging fees. Civil aviation is revoking authorizations for those aircraft.
      8. The evacuation plan is to provide temporary housing in Abaco to assist those persons who wish to stay on the island.
      9. Several safe spaces have been identified to clear areas for temporary housing.NOTICE ON SEARCH AND RECOVERY IN ABACO

      1. NEMA and its partners have not commenced any mass scale debris cleaning in Abaco.
      2. Search and recovery is still being conducted, particularly in Marsh Harbour.
      3. We are aware of rumors about bulldozing in The Mud. These reports are false.
      4. NEMA has directed a 50 member team from The United States Agency for International Development /Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) to work with the Bahamas Royal Bahamas Defence Force to do a systematic sweep of the island.
      5. The island has been put into a grid system and the recovery team will check each section for persons who are still alive, any bodies that need to be recovered, and to check for hazardous material.
      6. Only after each sector is cleared will NEMA and its partners move to the next phase of operations, which includes debris removal.

      SAFETY AND SECURITY

      – We are confident there is adequate coverage on both islands to address safety and security issues.
      – On Grand Bahama, there were 666 Royal Bahamas Police Force and Royal Bahamas Defence Force officers. These figures include police reserves.
      – In Abaco, there are 274 Royal Bahamas Police Force and Royal Bahamas Defence Force officers.
      – The Caribbean Community responding to our request for support.
      – Presenting on Abaco, there are 33 Jamaican Defence Force Officers assisting securing operations. There are 122 officers from Trinidad and Tobago who will be phased into Grand Bahama during the week.

      SHELTERS

      – When evacuees arrive in Nassau they are processed at the Processing Centre at Odyssey Aviation.
      – Evacuees are then taken to homes of family and friends, or a shelter.
      – The status of current shelters:
o  Sir Kendal Isaac Gym – 422 people (full)

    • Report from Royal Marsh Yacht Club, Abaco, Bahamas

      Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club

Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club, A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR, is on Abaco, Bahamas, devastated by Hurricane Dorian. Our thanks to Scott Coles for this report. See Relief Efforts.

      Fellow members,

Hurricane Dorian and the aftermath have devastated the Abacos.  These are our friends and our cruising ground and our winter home.  It is difficult to watch the videos and personal accounts emanating form the area on news outlets and social media.  This area was the best place to spend the winter and will be once again.  The people of Abaco need our help.

The Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club faces it’s own challenges as well.  If we don’t stay together as a group, we cannot help our friends with their rebuilding efforts.  I implore you to renew your membership with the RMHYC.  At $30 per year, the RMHYC has been, and STILL IS, the best deal in the Bahamas!  The Club will be donating 100% of the renewal dues collected during this current renewal season to various humanitarian and rebuilding efforts.  There is no shortage of need but we want to make sure that our donation finds the hands of those who really need it.  We will try to target specific projects or organizations that align with our goal to get back to Abaco!  Please don’t wait.  Renew now!

Essentially all of our members will be displaced for the upcoming cruising season.  Many of our present and past members have a connection to or are located in the Stuart Fl. area.  Therefore, we will be adopting Stuart as our home this season and as it happens to be, Stuart is also the sister city to Hope Town!  Our social calendar will be severely limited this year; however we are obligated to have our Annual General Meeting.  The meeting will likely be held at a location in Stuart but plans are still up in the air.  Information on time and location will be made available as soon as we can.

No one has a crystal ball that can tell us what is going to happen in the Abacos this year or in the years to come.  The Abaconians are a very resilient and creative group.  If anyone can pull the proverbial rabbit out of an empty hat, they can do it.  We as a club need to remain strong so that we can help them as best we can.  Hopefully, someday soon, we can get back together in the Abacos and visit the people and places we hold so dear.  Abaco Strong!
