    • Good Words for Oasis Boatyard and Marina, near AICW MM 780, St. Augustine, FL

This boatyard and marina is on the northeast shore of the Sebastian River opposite Green 17. Our thanks to Anthony and Michele for this excellent review.

John and Jodie Spears who own this marina have done a great job. They have 44 floating docks which makes it easy to get on/off your boat. Great restrooms and great showers.  They have a large lift and room to place your boat on the hard. They keep everything clean and organized. You can work and stay on your boat. They charge 2.00 a ft per night. If you stay more than 15 days then they charge you by the month. Close to downtown and plenty of great restaurants in this area. We are having some work done on our generator and we are enjoying being here. We decided to stay a month.

    • USCG Photo Report, Vessel Removed from St Marys Inlet, near GA/FL AICW Statute Mile 712

St Marys Inlet is the US military’s channel into Kings Bay Atomic Sub Station and is extremely well maintained.

      united states coast guard

Coast Guard removes fishing vessel from St. Mary’s inlet, GA

JACKSONVILLE-Fla.— The Coast Guard completed pollution mitigation and removal efforts for the fishing vessel Phuong Mai in St. Mary’s Inlet Georgia, Friday.

The vessel posed a hazard to the marine environment and was an imminent threat to obstruct passage of the navigation channel. As the Federal On-Scene Coordinator, Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville federalized the response using the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund. Over 500 gallons of oily water was pumped from the vessel, and contractors successfully removed the vessel and debris from the water.

The Coast Guard rescued two adults after their fishing vessel ran aground on Thursday, August  20th on the north jetty in St Mary’s Inlet, Georgia.

Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew arrived on scene and hoisted the two adults to safety with no reported injuries. The 40-foot fishing vessel encountered damage to their fiberglass hull and sank in approximately 20-feet of water.

“The Coast Guard is responsible for safeguarding the American people, ensuring security in a complex maritime environment, and ensuring the economic prosperity of the region,” said Petty Officer First Class Justin Chartier, the Federal On-Scene Coordinator representative on the response “This was a unique response that included 6 out of 11 Coast Guard missions: Ports, Waterways, & Coastal Security, Search & Rescue, Living Marine Resources, Marine Safety, Defense Readiness, and Marine Environmental Protection. We are thankful to the multiple federal and state agencies that assisted on the response. With their help, we were able to quickly remove the vessel from the water, prevent the threat of pollution to the local area and eliminate a hazard to navigation in a port of national significance.”

The Kiplinger Nature Preserve on Kanner Highway, a popular destination for nature hikers and “bridge walkers” on the Veterans Memorial Bridge, will soon become larger and more useful.

The Kiplinger family, of Washington, D.C., and Sewall’s Point announced today its intention to donate to Martin County a 7-acre tract between the bridge and the existing Kiplinger Nature Preserve, at the southwest corner of Kanner Highway and Indian Street. It consists of more than two acres of dry upland, with mature slash pines and saw palmetto, sloping down to five acres of wetlands and mangroves on the St. Lucie River. It includes a small, unnamed creek that flows into the river.

The newly donated land creates a number of recreational possibilities, including additional parking, a place for picnicking, a boardwalk to the river, etc.

      Whiticar Boat Works x Shearwater
Stuart, Fla. – Whiticar Boat Works, a family-established and family-run business that has been a part of marine life in Stuart, Florida for nearly seventy-five years is charting a new course for the future. With little fanfare and great excitement, Whiticar announces that the owners have chosen to separate the assets of the company.
Incorporated in 1959 by Curt Whiticar and John Dragseth, the rich history they built in the boating and marine industry has stood the test of time. Their sons, John Whiticar and Jim Dragseth, joined the company and eventually took the helm of the business as the popularity of the recreational boating lifestyle continued to grow. Under the leadership of John Whiticar and Jim Dragseth, the company expanded from the original boat yard in Stuart to include other marine repairs, services and equipment sales locations in Stuart and Ft. Pierce. Today, Whiticar Boat Works employs 48 people at three locations and in 2019 had more than $8 million in gross revenue.
With the separation, John Whiticar will become president of Whiticar Boat Works, retaining ownership of the boat yard on Willoughby Creek at 3636 SE Old St Lucie Blvd in Stuart, Florida, located just west of the old charter boat fleet docks started by John’s grandfather in 1917. To read their full press release please see the link below.

      Boat Captains Needed!

Marine Resources Council is looking for help with upcoming Spoil Island days for Summer Camp. These days are always a huge hit with the kiddos, as they take them out to one of the spoil islands to run water quality tests, plant mangroves, and identify different animal species.

They are looking for volunteers for the following:
      Friday, July 31st:
      • 1 boat captain to drive a boat that the Palm Bay Marina is donating
      • 2-3 additional boats and captains willing to donate their boat and time

Please note, that out of the safety of the campers, all volunteers must be over the age of 18. You may also be asked to wear a face mask for some part of the day or when around the kids. They would need all boats and their captains to be anchored offshore of the Lagoon House no later than 8:30am to allow for an on time departure. We will be heading back from the spoil island to the Lagoon House around 12:30pm. You can expect a roughly 5 hour day. If you are interested please contact Nicole at nicole@mrcirl.org for more information.

BoCC Approval to Use McCulley Marine Services to Deploy this Summer’s Secondary Concrete Reef

The St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners has given approval to deploy the FWC-funded artificial reef this summer. Thanks to the BoCC!

The new reef(s) will consist of up to 2,000 tons of secondary concrete materials scattered in 12 discrete piles near the CCA – Curtis Bostic Reef. This will give the area needed habitat diversity and may even enlarge the schools of baitfish on the CCA – Curtis Bostic Reef. Anecdotal reports by divers indicated that gag inhabited the reef during the spawning season this past winter. Please give me any other reports or experiences on any of our artificial reefs.

I am working on an alternative stockpiling and staging area that could be used for artificial reefs once Harbour Pointe Park becomes unavailable. To secure this area we must first partner with the Florida Department of Transportation. Please inform me via email whether you are willing to do this and what advantages and disadvantages you foresee in this partnership.
