A1A Ale House is located directly across the street from the St. Augustine City Marina. I’ve not dined (or imbibed) here in several years, but after reading the reviews below, that has clearly been a gross oversight on my part. May you be wiser and more fortunate!

Give the A1A ale house a try they have very good food and some fantastic home brews. It’s located directly across the street from the St Augustine marinia.

    • A Good Experience at North Palm Beach Marina, AICW Statute Mile 1014

North Palm Beach Marina - Click for Chartview

North Palm Beach MarinaNorth Palm Beach Marina – A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! – lies on the southwestern banks of the ICW shortly after you pass under the restricted North Palm Beach/Parker bridge.
Last weekend, we received a report from Captain Young that she had been overcharged for overnight dockage at North Palm Beach Marina. We passed these comments along to the management here, and within 24 hours, they were in touch with Captain Claudia, and a refund had been issued. Now, that’s what I call GOOD customer service.
Mistakes can and do happen to all of us (I made a mistake just last year). The real mark of a quality operation is how well and how swiftly oversights are handled when they do happen. North Palm Beach Marina has passed that test with proverbial flying colors in our book!

Spent the night on 3/13/13. Good place to stop for transients. They had some computer issues and the final bill turned out to be wrong. We were slightly overcharged. Chris, the marina manager got in touch with us the day after and refunded the difference. We will be back.

    • Dining Recommendations from Mariner’s Cay Marina/Manatee Pocket, Near Stuart, Florida and AICW Statute Mile 988

Mariner's Cay Marina - Click for Chartview

Mariner’s Cay Marina is located on the western shores of Manatee Pocket, near its northerly entrance. The recently dredged entrance to the pocket itself lies just west of the AICW/Okeechobee Waterway/St. Lucie River/St. Lucie Inlet intersection, known locally as “the crossroads.”
In addition to Mariner’s Cay (see below), there are a host of of other marinas and repair facilities along the shores of Manatee Pocket. Captain DeFoor gives some GOOD ideas below about shoreside dining attractions, within walking distance of all the pocket marinas.

Unfortunately, Finz Restaurant has closed. We miss their great pear salad with the home made vanilla bean dressing. There is a new restaurant there now (can’t remember the name). Also about a block away is the [King] Neptune (772-287-9630) which has great food but small (a local hangout for sure). Try their grouper Rubin. Across the street from there on the Pocket inlet is Manatee Island [Bar and Grill (772-872-7176). Have had good food there also. Down the street (A1A) to the left is the Whistle Stop (772-220-1020). Very good food. I personally suggest the Philly CheeseSteak.

    • Miami Marine Mechanic Recommended

I’ve often said, but it’s worth repeating, recommendations by fellow cruisers of good service personnel, are worth their weight in GOLD. Here is a good one for the greater Miami region.

Early on we crossed paths with Ivy and Bob Neubauer on Karma. They are just about done and on the last leg to crossing their wake in Cocoanut Grove, Miami, FL. Very nice and friendly people. Bob has come to our assistance a number of times with mechanical issues that were scary puzzlements to we rusty boaters and novice loopers. Bob is an expert boat mechanic with a very wide range of talents – engine,
transmission, electrical, electronic, water, leaks, unidentifiable things, etc. Also, he is neat and leaves behind a clean boat. He runs a marine service and salvage company in Miami called Odd Job Marine (305 331 1670).
One of his specialties is refitting large boats but he works for we small boat types also. We recommend him highly and will be getting a list of work done by him in Miami when we get there in a couple of weeks or whenever – depending on the weather.

    • Good Words For Halifax Harbor Marina (Daytona Beach, FL, Statute Mile 831)

Huge Halifax Harbor is certainly “the” place to coil your lines in Daytona Beach. Its two dockage basins are well sheltered, and the staff’s performance, in our experience, has always been exemplary.
If you want something a little quieter, with superb on-site dining, you might also consider SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Adventure Yacht Harbor, a touch farther to the south at Statute Mile 837.

Daytona Beach Municipal, Halifax Harbor, is a great place to stay. Fixed piers are more inexpensive, floating piers very nice. A well maintained facility it has 24 hr security, it is one block from Downtown with about 4 or 5 blocks of businesses, restaurants, city library, post office, 1 mi walk from the beach, easy access to the bus, and airport (2.5 mi). It’s a well protected harbor.

    • More Good Words for Marineland Marina (Statute Mile 796)

The Town of Marineland has opened its ports with a brand new marina facility creating a destination for boaters on the Intracoastal Waterway between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, FL.If we get many more laudatory reviews here at the SSECN concerning Marineland Marina (A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR), we may have to create a separate web site for this facility. Just kidding – seriously fellow cruisers, it is obvious that you simply cannot do better than coil your lines here for a few nights, or even longer!

As you start north this spring, consider a stop here and a visit to Marineland across the street. Stay 3 days and get complimentory pass to Marineland. Kelly and Erick are great, and they love us loopers. Marinland is now owned by the Georgia Aquarium, and money has been put in to bring this “first in the world marine park” back to first class status. One of our best stops EVER.

    • A Vote of Confidence in Lambs Yacht Center (on the St. Johns/Ortega Rivers, just above Jacksonville, FL)

Lambs Yacht Center is the most upstream facility on the Ortega River. This stream intersects the St. Johns, immediately above downtown Jacksonville. Do note that your vessel must be able to pass under a 45-foot fixed bridge in order to access Lambs.

We kept our boat at Lamb’s Yacht Center on the Ortega river off the St. Johns just south of downtown Jacksonville. This is a well protected area and offers concrete covered storage and a very attentive dockmaster who lives on his boat there. We arrived in 2005 after the hurricanes of ’04 and after talking with other boaters decided that it was about the best protected in-water location we could find.

    • Shands Bridge Sets Vertical Limit for Cruising the Upper St. Johns River

Many a sailor has exhausted their stock of four and five letter words while shaking their fists at the 45-foot, fixed Shands Bridge. This loathsome span crosses the St. Johns River, upstream of Jacksonville, hard by the village of Green Cove Springs, Florida. If you can’t fit under, then you will have to miss some of the best cruising and anchorages on this wonderful river!

The Bridge just south of Green Cove Springs is 45′ fixed so you are stopped there. The Water is still brackish (some hard growth still occurs) at Green Cove Springs which has a major marina Reynolds Park with dry storage, work areas and very large lift capability. This was the Navy’s old hurricane hole for ships so some of the piers are ship type piers. The river’s salinity depends on rainfall. Jacksonville does have a nice international airport albeit a not a hub it has access to all major hubs.

    • Breakwater Construction Underway at St. Augustine Municipal Marina, AICW Statute Mile 778

St. Augustine City Marina - Click for Chartview

The following is an excerpt from an article by Douglas Jordan published February 21st in the St. Augustine Record. For the full story see the link below.

The breakwater project at the St. Augustine Municipal Marina just south of the Bridge of Lions is finally under way.
A breakwater is a structure designed to mitigate waves. The St. Augustine Municipal Marina is getting one to shield its docks from big waves resulting from storms, said Harbormaster Sam Adukiewicz. The project will cost about $2.4 million.
`The city has had a plan for a breakwater since long before I was hired, and the funds were finally allocated this year,’ Adukiewicz said. `Almost every year, the marina has gotten a good amount of storm damage. So, we’re excited that we’re finally getting a little extra protection from the forces of nature.’
Jim Piggott, director of general services for the City of St. Augustine, said the plan has been in the works for at least six years, and the money for the current project came from an allocation for the marina out of an $18 million city bond put into effect 18 months ago. Piggott said the breakwater will eventually pay for itself in the savings it provides by preventing major damage to the facility.

    • Great Dining at Blackwater Inn (Astor, Florida – on the St. Johns River south of Lake George)

The Blackwater Inn has been one of my very favorite pieces of old Florida dining for many, many years. now. This restaurant, which has its one dinghy dockage, flanks the St. John’s western banks, immediately south of the Astor Bridge. If you are cruising the upper St. Johns, don’t dare miss a meal here!

On the way back up to JAcksonville we anchored in Astor and took the dinghy to eat at Blackwater Inn a great old time Florida restaurant.

    • Free Dock at Welaka, Florida (St. Johns River, between Palatka and Lake George)

The old Floridian community of Welaka guards the St. Johns’ eastern banks south of Palatka and north of Lake George, between markers #48 and #50. I must admit I did not know there was a free city dock here, but that ignorance is now in the past.
Has anyone else tied to the docks at Welaka? Are there power and/or water connections available dockside, and are any shoreside services such as showers in the offing? If you have any info on this facility, please either use the “Comment” function below, or follow the “Click Here to Contribute Cruising News” link on the upper right of this page.
Thanks ever so much in advance!

We did enjoy our trip from Jacksonville to Sanford. We anchored out almost every night but found free docks in both Palatka and Welaka. We met the mayor of Welaka as he came down to check out the docks. There is a free aquarium in Welaka. We recommend Cafe Bleuu for the food and the owners who are entertaining.
      Joy Poole

And now, thanks to Captains Glen and Jill (see below), we have lots more info on the Welaka city dock!

There is a free city dock in Welaka. While it seems to be set up for smaller fishing boats, and is often populated with a few folks fishing, it can handle cruising size boats. The T at the end of the dock is about 60 feet long and is the easiest place to tie up. But, there are triple dolphins outside the T, making it a very long step from the boat to the dock. It is possible to side tie to the south side of the dock, but you have to squeeze between the end of the T and a boat at the neighboring residential dock. The north side of the dock has finger piers, 20 feet long, 24 feet apart. While they are designed for two small boats, a cruising boat can fit. Longer boats could Med moor, dropping an anchor to secure the bow and back into the slip. The outer two slips have 15 foot depths. There is no electricity or water. The park up the street has restrooms and a shower.

    • New St. Johns River “Marina” Facility (Astor, Florida)

First, let me say that, over the years, Captain Bobbie Blowers and I have exchanged much information. She is an excellent observer and a superb writer.
It has been my experience that the sorts of “fish camp” type facilities, as described by Captain Bobbie below, can be real finds for cruisers. Of course, if you prefer all the amenities, this is probably not the place for you, but those of us who cherish the feeling that every puff of wind, or turn of the screw, carries us a bit farther from the maddening crowd, may find Parramore’s absolutely delightful!

      Hey Claiborne!
Greetings from a long time cruiser, recently resurfaced! I just read the most recent account of St John’s River cruising and would like to add some info gleaned from 2 winters of experience in the Astor area.
While our trusty old trawler Namaste was on the hard in a shed in the Chesapeake getting numerous repairs done, we spent our winters in a motorhome (Yep..the Dark Side!) at Parramore’s Fantastic Fish Camp. It is located about half a mile from the St John’s River on a deep water oxbow (Morrison’s Creek) just north of the Astor bridge. (This is the northern arm of the last oxbow east of the river before the bridge.)
The facility is definitely `Old’ Florida but has most everything a cruiser could want ‘“ plenty of anchoring room, boat ramp and dinghy dock, small café (Buck N Kat’s open 7 AM to 9 PM 7 days a week), club house, pool, tennis courts, laundry, small bait/sundries store, loads of country roads for walking and most of all, nice and friendly folks.
I spoke with one of the owner managers (Laurie) about cruisers’ use of the facilities. She was thrilled about the idea of cruisers coming in, especially to the café. The laundry has several machines and is available for any who want to use it. If you have a group, she can arrange use of the clubhouse facilities. Sorry..I neglected to ask about use of the pool, tennis courts and showers, but I feel sure if someone wanted to use these and spoke with her, she could make arrangements for those as well. Parramore’s telephone number is: 386-749-2721
We have cruised the St John’s twice and if we ever do so again will most definitely anchor in Morrison’s creek oxbow and dinghy in to Parramore’s. Try it!
Fair winds and the ever elusive `cheap’ fuel!
      Bobbie Blowers
      M/V Namaste

You can come ashore on the west bank under the draw bridge or at one of the restaurants. You will be in walking distance of the Ace hardware store (propane), the post office, and several marine mechanics and boat shops.

    • Murphy Creek Anchorages, off the St. Johns River Between Palatka and Lake George

The combined mouths of Murphy and Dunns Creek cut into the southern banks of the St. Johns River between markers #15 and #16. There are many good spots to drop the hook on these combined waters.

Last Thanksgiving we took a few days to explore the river south of Jacksonville to Sanford Fl. It was a beautiful trip. We would highly
recommend Murphys Creek anchorage if you are heading to the springs. Great wildlife. The springs were very shallow and a challenge. Saw a couple of eagle and a large gator. Passing by Blue spings we did see a few manatee.

    • More on “The Crab Shack” on Sixmile Creek (off the St. Johns River, south of Green Cove Springs)

Outback Crab Shack on Sixmile Creek

There was a recent discussion on the T&T (Trawlers and Trawlering) list about the famous Crab Shack Restaurant, just off the St. Johns River, south of Green Cove Springs. Over the years, we’ve had many postings here on the Cruisers’ Net about this WONDERFUL place to slake a healthy appetite. From time to time, though, it’s good to recall this St. Johns River dining attraction!
To access this facility, cruise into Palmo Cove, along the eastern banks of the St. Johns River, well east – southeast of river marker #22. Be sure to avoid the long tongue of shoal water which stretches out from this cove’s northside entrance point.
Sixmile Creek stretches out from the southeastern corner of Palmo Cove. Be advised that you may have to cruise through some 4 1/2 foot soundings to reach the stream’s mouth, and again as you approach the restaurant’s docks.
If you can stand these depths, the effort is well worthwhile!

I would highly recommend six mile creek and the outback crab shack. The food is great and you can dock there free. There are no utilities but the dock is in excellent condition and 1500 ft long. It is an unusual place and one that you will talk about even after you finish the loop. The approach in the bay appears shallow there was plenty of water and once you get close to the creek, it becomes 15-20 feet deep. We liked it so much, we stopped on our way in and back on our way out from Sanford.
      John and Carol Sagel

Add our names to the recommendation for Six Mile Creek and docking at the Outback Crab Shack – what a great stop. The way in is worryingly shallow, but we made it in and out twice with no problems. Be prepared to take home some of the food if you eat there – big portions!

    • A Request for Route Recommendations, Fort Myers to Homestead (Biscayne Bay)

Here is a another fellow boater looking for local knowledge and suggestions. His journey will encompass navigating the waters of Southwestern Florida past Naples, then Marco Island, then past the Ten Thousand Island region, and finally past Cape Sable, eventually ending up in the Florida Keys. At this point, a northward turn via the FLK Inside Route, will take him to his goal on the Eastern Florida shoreline in Biscayne Bay.
As of 2/25/13, Captain Kris has received some excellent advice from Captains Donovan and Bell below

      Hello,
I’m planning or rather need to go from Fort Myers to Black Point marina in Homestead [south of Miami on the mainland shores of Biscayne Bay – editor]. Was reading the postings and looking at the chart and have a few questions regarding the posts.
The comment `winter waves’ ‘“ should I expect high seas in February? I generally like deep water so was planning to stay somewhat deep but I saw some posts that said charts are wrong.
Cape Sable shoals ‘“ is this difficult to navigate?
Boat. 34ft sail, 4.0 draft, 52’8 must height. 27 horse diesel.
Experience moderate. Looks like I enter the channel just south of east cape. couple questions:
      1. What stops do you recommend?
      2. Does the inter-coastal run cleanly all the way up from the inside or do I need to go outside?
      3. Heading towards Marathon looks interesting because the water is deeper.
      I appreciate any advice.
      Kris

You will need to go outside at least until Gordon Pass at Naples where you can anchor in Port Royal or go downtown for a mooring or dockage. From there, inside to Marco is doable with the right tide as is inside to coon Key, but it is tricky in spots, so outside is easier. You can anchor in Factory Bay or Smokehouse Bay or dock in Marco. Cape Sable Shoals are not to be taken lightly so, if you go outside, you need to go pretty far south before turning Eastward (you can `jump the light ‘˜). There are other anchorages before Little Shark, but I haven’t used them and they would depend on the strength and direction of the winds. Anything at or above 20 from any other direction than North will be uncomfortable and we get lots of fronts this time of year.. From Little Shark it’s a straight run down to Marathon. Of course, you could do an `allnighter’ directly from Ft. Myers.
      Donovan

You can anchor a mile inside Gordens Pass, then at Factory Bay in Marco. You can safely cut cape Ramano at the lime stone channels and anchor in calm water up the left hand fork heading towards Everglades City then a easy run to Boot Key Harbor. Email me if you want route, anchorage way point and draft information. We have a five foot draft 41 Hunter that has been on this route at least eight times. Email info is patriotus@comcast.net for info from 41 Hunter.

    • Report from Manatee Pocket Anchorage, off the AICW Statute Mile 988

Manatee Pocket - Click for Chartview

In January of this year, we received a map showing two small areas in Manatee Pocket that have been designated as official anchorages as part of the controversial Stuart/Martin County anchorage regulations which allows anchoring only in those two areas. See map and link below. Manatee Pocket is off the St. Lucie River between the AICW intersection and downtown Stuart, FL.

      Cruising News:
There is no longer signage indicating a 72 hour anchoring limit in Manatee Pocket in St Lucie Florida (Stuart). There are numerous vessels at anchor in the two anchorages in the pocket that give evidence of having been here for many months. Just thought this might be of interest to cruisers coming through. Also, the two dinghy docks have a 2 and 3 hour limit not 1 as I have seen published.
