      Sunset Bay Marina (Stuart, Florida – St. Lucie River)

      Sunset Bay Marina is the new incarnation of the old Stuart City anchorage and mooring field. It reopened several months ago, and will undoubtedly be a prime location for the fall and winter 2009-2010 cruising season!
      This facility is located well up the St. Lucie River/Okeechobee Waterway, from the St. Lucie River/AICW intersection. In fact, you must cruise upstream of the new high-rise US1 Bridge, and the old Roosevelt Twin Bridges, to reach the new docks.

      If your are staying at Sunset Bay for less than 4 nights expect to PAY’¦ $76.00 per day for 32 as of 07/20/09, better to use there mooring field $12.00 per day if Sunset happens to be a stop’¦ new docks and OK amenities know close shopping without transportation.

      Cruising News: I’ve been docked at the NEW Sunset Bay Marina & anchorage, Stuart, FL for a few months now and want you to know what a well run place this is. They sell gas and diesel and you might want to include them in your report. The Harbormaster is Buzz Billue with Sam Portolese and Ruth Conrad as Assistant Harbormaster’s.       The moorings have gone back down to $10 per day or $240.00 a month. There is free wifi, a nice boater’s lounge, new showers, new laundry facilities and a new waterfront restaurant next door. The restaurant is opening in October. The marina is full but they have a waiting list. They still take transients for short term stays. We walked a short 10 minute walk to the grocery store and to downtown Stuart. They also have a public bus that takes you to just about any store you need to go to. All in all it’s a great place to stay and the staff is the best you’ll find anywhere.

      I was one of the first long term dockers at Sunset Bay. I could go on and on about how pristine the faciity is and how professionally run it is but the the biggest asset of the marina is the staff. I have stayed at many marinas but have never had the pleasure of having such a friendly and capable staff as Buz, Sam and Ruth. From day one, they made me feel like I had been there for years. The icing on the cake is the magnificant restaurant, Sailor’s Return. The restaurant is owned and operated buy Bob Davis. Bob has a very colorful cullinary background and will soon have Sailor’s Return known as the best restaurant in Stuart.

      Palm Coast Marina (St. M. 802) and Vero Beach Municipal Marina (St. M. 952)

      There’s some good info in Captain Larry’s message, partciularly about the Vero Beach Municipal facility, And, these good people are a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

      Mas Bueno has made the last crossing of Lake Okeechobee until Sept when the Moore Haven Lock reopens. It turned into a bit of a rush.
      We are now at Indiantown getting ready to head north up the Fl East coast from Stuart and would like to stop at a marina along the way for a few days to a week that is close to the Beach for some slower time.
      Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      You might try Palm Coast Marina at M – 208. You can walk or bicycle to the beach from their facility. Can bike or walk to stores, banks etc. The staff welcomes cruisers and they are super nice folks.
      We also stayed in the mooring field at Vero Beach. They also have slips but I think you need to call ahead. Again you can walk or bike to the beaches or all over the town. They have plenty of dingy docks. Buss service is free and you can get to all major stores by buss. The drivers were very helpful and again very welcoming to cruisers.

      Mariners Cay Marina (Manatee Pocket, off St. Lucie River, St. M. 988)

      Manatee Pocket like a short distance upstream on the St. Luice, River, from this stream’s shoal prone intersection with the AICW and St. Lucie Inlet. I have visited Mariner’s Cay many times over the years. It is a medium sized facility, with a very quiet environment. It’s a long walk to reach any restaurants or provisioning possibilities, but, if you are looking for a place to just rest from your travels, this could be the spot.

      We [use to] own a condoat the Mariner’s Cay marina in the Manatee Pocket years ago. It’s a small, private marina about 1/2 m inside the Pocket on the west side. It has fuel, transient dockage, pool at the docks, laundry/baths and was always very clean when we were there. Rates usually less than the commercial area marinas and docks were on the outside and very easy to access. The other nice thing was that Mariner’s Cay was within walking distance of the West Marine Store, about 1/2 m walk/ride away.

      We’re headed south at the moment but wanted to plug the Fort Pierce City Marina, complete with Boat US discounts on both fuel and dockage. On Saturday mornings they have one of the best farmers’ markets you’ll see: baked goods, fruits, vegetables, fresh seafood, unbelievable guacamole, jams, crafts, etc. They also have lots of free festivals with live music, and the marina staff, town folk and permanent dock dwellers (including two former Loopers) are all exceptionally friendly. Put it on your list.

Fort Pierce City Marina itself is a superior facility in ever way, and is highly recommended by yours truly, And, of course, they are a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS NET SPONSOR!

      Hello all:
      t has been said that Ft. Pierce, FL City Marina (mm 965) is a great place to stay, but has poor transportation service for the boating community to shop and re-supply.
      Palmetto Moon is in Ft Pierce, it is a great place, clean, great staff, 14 restaurants in a 4 block area, well protected, a BIG Farmers Market and arts/crafts tents every Saturday, 4 washers/dryers (1.00), and concerts in the park adjacent to the marina.
      Su and I have unraveled the bus issues. There are 2 types of transportation services offered:
      1. A scheduled route, Treasure Coast Connector, that runs North and South on US 1, appox. every 30 min. However these stops are 4 blocks from the marinas. So if you do full shopping/re-provisioning the schlepping becomes a huge task.
      2. The Community Transit System. A true door-to-door route (no set route) that you must make reservations for pick up. This service works very well for heavy shopping. But, takes appox. 3.5 – 4 hours to complete your round trip. This service is more complicated to use, as you must register in advance of your shopping plans and then call 24 hours before, to schedule a pick-up. This service is not one that can be utilized on the day of arrival without registering in advance. To register before arrival call 772-464-7433. This system uses computer routing, the exact address is required both for pick-up and destination. To get around this we go to the office, get the add. then make the call.
      Downside issues:
      A. If the bus is crowded they can limit the carry-ons to 4 bags per person
      B. Pick-up time is sometime after 8 AM (remember no set route) normally around 8:30 – 8:45 and continues to pick-up and drop-off until your stop.
      C. If Wal-Mart is your destination add 1.5 – 2 hours to your trip.
      D. Normal shopping to Wal-Mart (Tues.) and Publix (Thurs.)

Now, below we hear that there’s a really wonderful place to satisfy a healthy appetite nearby. What could be better!

      Subject: Harbor Cove Restaurant – Ft Pierce
      Cruising News: Fabulous Restaurant alert! We were at Harbor Town Marina in Ft Pierce last night and the restaurant there, Harbor Cove Restaurant was a true and wonderful surprise. We had “dirty Oysters” to start which were fresh and large raw oysters topped with sour cream, caviar and onions. The oysters were fresh and truly incredible. Prime Rib was the special which was so good that this morning I am kicking myself for not getting a portion to take home for lunch today. (take THAT Coinjock!) And the Mussels with pasta were some of the best mussels I\’ve had outside of Maine. All of this, 2 beers and a drink for $55.
      Friendly and helpful staff, and locals were terrific.
      And as far as the marina goes, also terrific. Grounds are beautifully maintained, loaner bikes, they will arrange for Enterprise…very helpful in every way. Electric was good, docks well maintained.
      This is an absolute must stop for us on our commute up and down the coast.

      My wife and I have always enjoyed staying at the Fort Pierce City Marina when ever we traveled up or down the east coast. It’s right in the down town area and the city seems to always have something going on on the week ends. Don’t know what the rates are now but they were the best in the area. Nice showers and laundry rooms and great restaurants right at the docks shopping near by.

      Cook Point – Fort Pierce Anchorage (Statute Mile 964.5)

      The entrance to the anchorage described by Captains John and Sue below, cuts east, immediately north of the North Fort Pierce bascule bridge. Personally, I would not want to take a vessel larger than 45 feet into this channel.

      Subject: Anchorage-Cook Pt./Ft. Pierce
      Cruising News: Anchored up cut adjacent to north side of Cook Pt./Ft. Pierce, went in 1/4 mile beyond low bridge on south side of cut to beyond the Idle Speed/No Wake sign. Plenty of water on south side of cut. A little skinny for the first 1/10th mile. Good protection w/a bonus of a fair view of the Nov. 14 Endeavor launch.

      Palmetto Moon with Su, Jim, and Alex (the lazy cat) are in Ft. Pierce City Marina. Good facility with very knowledge people and easy bus service to Publix, Lowes, and CVS. Looks like we will stay here for a looooog time. Temp. as of this writing is 78 and a low of 68 tonight.
