Wouldn’t you like to be as close to such a magnificent creature as this fishing crew was ?

Hilton Head fishing crew spots rare creature off coast. It was as big as an 18-wheeler

Tybee Island is not in South Carolina…. Tybee Island is in Georgia… It is usually called "Savannah Beach"…Please get your "facts" right before you post them to the "WWW". It just makes you look stupid when people see it. Take care.

Had one come up along side and blew a spout. Scared the hell out of me. Then it just one eyed me for a bit, and went under and swam away. Just behind Blackbeards Island in the ICW.

    • Healy Report: Port Royal, SC to Walburg Creek, GA, AICW Statute Miles 539 to 619N or 623.5S

Walburg Creek shapes the east side of Walburg Island and the Waterway lies on the west side. Good depths and great beach combing. My young daughters always declared the beach spooky because of the skeletal trees and dense forest to the east! While the creek has both a northern and southern entrance from the AICW, we prefer the northern passage, though there is still an unmarked shoal northwest of Middle Ground in St. Catherine’s Sound which must be bypassed. Experienced cruisers, Jim and Peg Healy, continue to generously share their observations and advice as they make their way south for the winter. Thank you Jim and Peg!

On Monday, 10/29/2018, Sanctuary and crew travelled from Port Royal, SC to Walburg Creek, GA. Following, some observations:

We arrived at Ramshorn’s Cut at 10h15 with the tide station at Daufuskie Island (Daufuskie Landing) showing 5.8+ rising. We saw 11.0 ft, so (11.0 – 5.8) = 5.2′ at MLLW. The channel between G39 and R40 has narrowed further. We took the visual center.

We arrived at the un-named connector between the New River and the Wright River at 10h38 with the tide station at Daufuskie Island (Hargray Pier) showing 6.2+ rising. We saw 12.2 ft, so (12.2 – 6.2) = 6.0′ at MLLW. Follow the visual center. Honor, but stay away from, the lateral markers on pilings.

We arrive at Field’s Cut at 11h06 with the tide station at Field’s Cut showing 7.6+ rising. Southbound, take the visual center between G47 and R48, and line up on Field’s Cut. HONOR R48A, which appears off-station to the East. We saw 11.2 ft passing about 25 ft off R48A, so (11.2 – 7.6) = 3.6′ at MLLW. This was a surprise! We followed the visual center of Field’s Cut, favoring the outside radius of the turns. That 3.6′ area was the control depth of the cut. Cross-currents are significant at the Savannah River. Be alert for river traffic and cross currents.

There was a large, working crane barge at the Causton Bluff bridge. It appears “they” are replacing that bridge with a high rise. Another surprise.

We arrived at Hell Gate (MM600) at 14h18, with the Egg Islands Tide Station reporting +7.0 falling. Depths we saw:
      G87 13.5′
      G89 10.4′
      9.8 low water between markers
      R90 10.9
      G91 10.4

So (9.8 – 7.0) = 2.8′ MLLW. Also note, as you enter this cut from the Vernon River, there is a STRONG cross current that will try to sweep you sideways. Boats will need some power and some aggressive steering to stay on the best route. We crabbed into the lee of the current at about a 20° angle. There is a prominent visual distraction just to the west of the marked channel. There is a piling left over from some previous danger mark standing prominently, while the red and green floaters that mark the channel are low to the water and hard to see. Do not confuse that piling as a valid channel marker. Follow and honor the cans and nuns in the water

Net: the overall condition of the A-ICW continues to deteriorate. Most cruising boats will need some tide help to get through this section. Plan accordingly.

Passed thru Fields Cut on Nov 9, 2018, and found a minimum of 8 feet MLW at north end of Fields Cut. But there are two possible "gotchas". R48A appears to be off station, but it is not. For best water pass half way between R48A and the eastern shore. Also, be aware that once you turn to enter Fields Cut, (if southbound) you will be subject to strong cross currents.

We are enjoying one of the nicest Marinas: Windmill Harbour on Hilton Head. They have their own lock!
Later this week we are headed south and I’d like any recent knowledge on Hells Gate near mile marker 601.
We crossed it in April with no issues at Mid tide. I’m embarrassed to say I’m having trouble finding the tidal location. Thanks

This non-ICW anchorage and unlisted in Cruisers’ Net’s Anchorage Directories has been mentioned here in the past, see https://cruisersnet.net/34459. Gearry and Stacey are hoping you might have recent experience to share re anchoring there.

We’re considering stopping at Bluffton on our way back to Savannah from Beaufort in a couple of weeks. Any updates/additional information on this anchorage? I’m assuming the public dinghy dock mentioned is the Calhoun Street Dock. Planning to give it a try.

I have anchored many times just past the shrimp boats docked at the Bluffton Oyster Company. Plenty of room for our 43 foot trawler. You can leave a dinghy on the beach next to the boat ramp or at the dinghy dock. One of our favorite spots and well worth the run up from the ICW. Anchoring further down the creek could be tight if a shrimper is going in or out.

Harbour Town at Hilton Head, with its familiar red-and-white-striped lighthouse, is a fine resort marina with an enormous number of amenities.

Harbour Town Yacht Basin, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, is now essentially open, offering fuel sales and transients slips with water, but no electricity. As stated below, full service is expected to be restored in June. This definitely good news for Spring cruisers! Our thanks to Harbourmaster Nancy Cappelmann for this update.

The marina is now open to transient guests, however, we are still under construction and have limited amenities on the docks. In other words, we have running water.
Our electrical contractor is on site and is working on the new electrical installation, and we should have power restored to some docks in the next 30-45 days. The full marina may not be restored till fall.
Our commercial dock is in place and all of our charter operators are in full swing.
Our fuel dock is open and fully operational.
The Sea Pines Resort is fully operational and all of the restaurants, golf courses, tennis courts, fitness center, beach…all of the amenities are in fantastic condition. [See /164092 and  /164507]
While we still have construction ahead, we are very grateful to all of our contractors for their commitment to this project and to all of our returning guests for their patience and understanding. We look forward to the day we are running on all cylinders.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    • A Good Visit to Shelter Cove Marina, Hilton Head, SC, AICW Statute Mile 564

Shelter Cove is located in a man-made cove on the southeastern shores of Broad Creek in Hilton Head Island near creek markers #22 and #23. Broad Creek departs the Waterway on the eastern shore of Calibogue Sound just as the Waterway turns west into the Copper River. Our thanks to Dick Lawson for this review.

Spent 4 nights here this past month. This is a beautiful and very well run marina. It is large and slips can be either close to the “action” or close to the marina office/store and showers. Regardless, one of the dock boys will show up in a golf cart to deliver you to your destination. Within walking distance there are several very nice restaurants and other shops. Transportation is also provided to the supermarket, or to the beach. Location is several miles off the ICW, up Broad Creek, and, as the name implies, it is very sheltered. Look forward to a return trip.

Modeled after a famous harbor in Portofino, Italy, Harbour Town Yacht Basin was designed to attract visitors while preserving the natural beauty of the landscape. This included preserving the Liberty Oak, which was incorporated into the layout of the marina in lieu of building more slips. Centuries old, the Liberty Oak has stood as a symbolic landmark for wedding venues and concerts, but the most iconic image of the yacht basin is the Harbour Town Lighthouse. Constructed the same year as the marina, the lighthouse has welcomed visitors to one of the most beautiful and unique places on earth while offering one-of-a-kind views.

Windmill Harbour Marina, Hilton Head SC

Windmill Harbour Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, is located hard by the southwesterly mouth of the Waterway’s passage south down Skull Creek, on the shores of Hilton Head Island, south of marker #27.

Welcome to Windmill Harbour Marina, situated on the northwest coast of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. We are located on the Intracoastal Waterway, just ½ mile south of the Pinckney Island Bridge at mile marker 558, 500 yards south of channel marker 27, and ½ mile north of channel marker 29 in the Calibogue Sound. The marina’s 15.5 acre harbour boasts 258 boat slips, offering many for short or long term rental or sale. Transient dockage is available including dining privileges at the Yacht Club, laundry, restrooms and showers, competitively priced fuel and a pump out station. Our remarkable harbour offers a safe, tide free haven protected by a lock system directly off the Intracoastal Waterway. The Windmill Harbour Marina lock is 75′ long by 19′ wide. Hours of operation are 0800 to 1900 by harbour master or 24 hours by yachtsmen with a keycard. We monitor channel 14 VHF and our phone number is 843-681-9235.
One of only three private locked harbours on the east coast, Windmill Harbour Marina offers an unparalleled combination of convenience and security…the safest place to keep your yacht.

      windmill

Windmill Harbour initially began in 1981, the founding company chose a Southwestern style featuring an adobe look and a large windmill at the entrance.  This design, however, was not embraced by the community. In response, the founders removed the windmill and the land plan changed to a mix of single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums in a more acceptable southern traditional style, similar to residences found in Charleston. As Windmill Harbour began to take shape, more and more homes were built in that style. This led to the evolution of the Charleston Lowcountry look one sees in Windmill Harbour today.
Windmill Harbour is home to a variety of different boaters. From small center console fishing boats to large offshore sport fishing boats, fertile fishing grounds are nearby. A significant fleet of Harbor 20s engages in class racing and there are numerous cruising and sailing activities including the Calibogue Cup, Harbour Town Cup and Ocean Challenge.

      windmill2 windmill3

One of the most important assets of the community is the marina and its unique harbor. The harbor is composed of 15.5 acres and houses more than 255 boat slips and is the largest harbor on Hilton Head Island by nearly a hundred slips. The lock was constructed to create a protected harbor from the weather and the changing tides. It was only the second lock existing on the eastern seaboard at the time. The lock is operated with the gravity flow of water, electricity and hydraulics. As complicated as it may appear, it is very simple to operate.

      VIDEO

      VIDEO

As the marina and neighborhood came together the next step was to give the community a place to gather. Thus the South Carolina Yacht Club was born. The vision was that the club would be populated by the most interesting residents and visitors to Hilton Head Island, reminiscent of those early social gatherings on Hilton Head. This led to the decision which established a club that property owners could choose to join, but were not required to do so, and that would invite membership from outside of Windmill Harbour and Hilton Head as well. More detailed information on the founding of the South Carolina Yacht Club can be found on its website.

      windmill5

The unique history, breathtaking beauty, meticulous planning and unique harbor have made Windmill Harbour a premier marina community in the Lowcountry. Its vibrancy and growth are a testament to its founders and its residents.

Just wanted to comment on the staff and marina facilities at Windmill Harbour . We kept our 43′ motor yacht there over this past winter (2015-16) and believe there is no better choice in the Hilton Head area. Very professional marina staff and pleasant location. The marina is in a gated community so it is safe and secure, and the marina is protected by a lock system which keeps the water depth constant in the marina. It is home to the South Carolina Yacht Club so many nice boats and activities. They welcome transient boaters as well as those for longer stays. One thing to be aware of is that access to stores and restaurants will require transportation as it is a residential area.

    • Good Visit to Hilton Head Harbor, AICW Statute Mile 557

Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort and Marina overlooks the Waterway’s southwestern shoreline opposite marker #20, north of Calibogue Sound.

Hey all I stopped for 3 days due to sickness and Jack and Bourbon were both friendly and they checked in on me regularly. If your looking for good food and a good nights sleep give them a try. The restaurant was pricey but the food is great and the ladies will go the extra mile. I was so sick and the restaurant gave me a big bowl of soup and would not take a penny. If you stop make sure you have a biscuit for Bourbon, Jack’s Labrador and give him a hug from me. Before you leave don’t forget to top off your tanks as the fuel is the lowest price around.

      Historic Port Royal and Beaufortbattle-of-port-royal-island
When berthed at our marina, you are surrounded by history. Jean Ribaut sailed into the Port Royal Sound in 1562 and wrote to his sponsors in France that there was “no fairer no fitter place.” His way of saying “it just doesn’t get any better than this.” He liked the area enough that he established the village of Port Royal that same year. Beaufort is a relative newcomer, chartered much later in 1711. Today, these two historic towns are separated only by the width of a sign post at the Burger King on Ribaut Road, which runs through both towns. This entire area is known for some of the finest hospitality in the South. We will be glad to make dinner reservations for you or to provide information on any of the many attractions in our area.
bombarding_of_port_royal_sc (1)There are many magnificent antebellum homes along the water and on Bay Street in downtown Beaufort- some of which are open to the public, such as the John Mark Verdier House. Even those that are not open to the public are still worth a trip by foot, bicycle, tour bus, horse drawn carriage, or our courtesy car to take a look at their magnificent pre-civil war construction. The area, and specifically some of these homes, has been host to a number of award-winning movies such as Forrest Gump, The Big Chill, The Prince of Tides, and The Great Santini (The last two were written by local author Pat Conroy). In fact, in the closing scene of The Prince of Tides, our marina can be seen as Nick Nolte rides over the adjacent bridge. In addition to the antebellum homes, there are several pre-civil war churches, the Beaufort Museum, fine antique stores, horse and buggy rides in the downtown area, tabby ruins at Old Sheldon Church and Dataw Island. Beaufort also features Hunting Island State Park, Parris Island, and the Penn Center, where the native Gullah traditions and language are preserved and nurtured. We will be glad to give you directions, provide you with maps, lend you the courtesy car, or drive you downtown to get started.

      On-site Facilities: face_dock
Ship’s Store– Located landside, you will find our ship’s store stocked with many marine items that you may need. We are a Land-N-Sea overnight order center. Should we not have what you need in stock, our 25,000+ item catalog probably does. Orders in by 3:00 PM are delivered around noon the next day with no freight charge to you. Deliveries are made Tuesday through Friday.
Courtesy Car– The marina has a courtesy car available for your convenience. It is available for short trips in the area during normal marina hours. ATM machines, grocery stores, pharmacies, auto parts stores, medical facilities, banks, churches, golf courses, and shopping in downtown Beaufort or Port Royal are all just a short ride from the marina. We can provide you with a map and directions to any of these locations.
Dock Carts– For ease in moving those supplies up and down our pier and docks, we have available a number of dock carts for your use. Also, if you need some additional hauling power, we can help with one of our golf carts. Just let us know!
Shower and Restroom Facilities– Clean, code secured, well-lit showers and restroom facilities are located adjacent to the ship’s store. Detergent, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and other toilet articles are available in the ship’s store for purchase.
Laundromat– We have an on-site laundry facility open twenty four hours for your convenience.
The Back Porch Grille– Also landside, you will find the Back Porch Grille, our own little taste of waterway Marina3 (1) America. They serve what according to many of our repeat customers is the best cheeseburger on the ICW. A menu is included in your welcome package and we hope that you will give it a try. A ten percent discount is available for our visiting boaters. There is usually live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. The food is good, the service fair, the beverages cold, and the clientele… well, they are a study in themselves. The Back Porch Grille opens daily at 11:00 AM (opens at 4:00 PM on Mondays) and the food is available until 9:00 PM (or later with notice.) The bar closes around midnight, and it can be an adventure. Stop in and give it a try.
