COOPER RIVER MARINA BECOMES SC’s 15th CLEAN MARINA Charleston, SC — The South Carolina Clean Marina Committee has granted Clean Marina certification to Cooper River Marina (CRM), located in North Charleston, SC and administered by the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission. A flag and certificate were awarded to the marina managers at the South Carolina Marine Association Summer Marine Education Conference. SCMA administers the SC Clean Marina Program in cooperation with the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control and the SC Department of Natural Resources. Although a voluntary program, it challenges SC marinas and boatyards to manage facility operations as responsible stewards of the environment. Matt Cooper, General Manager of CRM, said they made over a span of three years improvements“upon existing policies and procedures to conform to the standards. These included maintaining a clean and operational pump out boat, proper storage of hazardous materials, providing boater education and signage on environmentally friendly practices, recycling and proper disposal of materials, selling and encouraging the use of environmentally friendly products, as well as fabrication of spill response and emergency action procedure documents, among others.” From South Carolina Marine Association Press Release, 9/16/13
Currents in the Cooper River at this marina can run in the vicinity of 3 knots with storm run off on a spring tide ebb. We had no trouble dealing with them with a single screw sailboat. Just come in just before slack before ebb and leave the same way. The current issue here is that wind against tide can set up quite a chop. Pick the downwind side of the face dock or find another place. Yes it is remote, and yes the neighborhood is not so hot, but the staff is excellent, the facilities are well maintained. For an overnight stay is is a very good deal compared to the marinas for people with deep, deep pockets on the other rivers which also have their share of current and wind issues. Chris & Janet

I have been familiar with the Cooper River Marina since it was new after Huricane Hugo wiped out the old US Navy sailing facility. It was originally built as a US Navy military marina. When the Base closed the Charleston County Parks took over. It is a very nice facility and the employees and manager Matt Driscole are the best. However the county parks has never recognized the military men and women who paid for the marina through non-appropriated funds through the use of commissarys and exchanges. Its just a hard spot with me, but I feel the County should honor the military with a military rate for long term dockage. After all the sailors and airmen paid for it. Manning J. Harvey III
We stayed at Cooper River for a month in November and would go back again. Didn’t see any dust from loading ships. Staff there was most accommodating and offered us rides if we needed, including all the way to the airport. Like the fact that it’s next to a Navy base. Felt very secure leaving the boat there. The Cooper River Marina is run by Charleston, County bit more reasonable but remote in a North Charleston Industrial area. Need a car and I d believe they are still unloading concrete ships up there and lots of nice concrete dust to wash off your boat from time to time. Capt Bob Onboard ALLEZ! MT50
Two years ago we left Morning Star at Cooper River Marina, in Charleston. The facility is just fine but it is out away from town. I wouldn’t want to use it for a brief “tourist” stay but for short term storage its just fine. It is owned/operated by either the City or the County (I don’t remember which), has fairly new docks and they operate a courtesy shuttle. I got a ride to the auto parts store and also back from the airport when I returned my rental car. They will take you into town to do your sightseeing but you need to hop a cab back. I’d do it again. We docked at Cooper River Marina during the month of November last year and were very pleased with the cleanliness of the facility and the very friendly and most helpful staff. We hope to stay at Cooper River Marina again the next time we’re in Charleston. It’s very cool watching huge ships traveling up and down the Cooper River…nothing boring about this marina.
Friday morning we docked at the Cooper River Marina, which is county-owned. Very friendly staff (Hugh is from Long Island) who are more than willing to drive you downtown, etc. Take a cab back. The marina is clean, fairly well protected from wakes, showers, laundry, lounge with tv and dial-up internet. Albin 36 Miss Happ New Bern NC
We left Morning Star at Cooper River Marina for almost a month last fall while we returned home for Thanksgiving. Actually, we paid for a month but left the boat there for approx. two weeks. It was an OK storage facility but not vry good for enjoying the city. Having said that, its WAY cheaper than the City Marina. We considered leaving the boat at Ladies Island at Beaufort but we couldn’t put a one-way car rental together from there. Regards, Randy Pickelmann
