Stopped here in October for a couple days on the way to S.C. The grounds were gorgeous and inside the Harbor Club was no exception. We had coffee and bagels at the Provision company across the street from the docks every morning and admired the scenery. The staff was great and Gavin was both accomidating to us and knowledgable about the facility and surrounding area of Oriental N.C. We will definitley be going back!
Left River Dunes yesterday heading for our home marina in Beaufort, NC. We were 4-5 hours away and decided to stay 2 nights at this high end marina because it is so nice. The pool, the staff, the cabanas, the hot tubs, the porches, the quiet places to unwind…well you get the picture. One morning a dock hand was walking the dock “knocking down the spider webs” to keep up the appearance of this beautiful place. Truly a little piece of heaven so very close to home. Thank you River Dunes staff!
We have stayed at the River Dunes a couple of times recently. Best said this is a boater’s oasis and a must stop over. It is seems even better when the Pamlico Sound is blowing 15 to 20 MPH from the N NE which we experienced this past week.
Today is 5/12/13. Am writing this from River Dunes. We give this marina the highest rating for best facilities, help and over all a first class operation. A courtesy car is available to go to Oriental. Food store is limited. We ate several meals in the club house and the food and service are also first class, although somewhat limited. Reasonable dockage for this type of facility. Been here before and plan to come back. Has Royer s/v Skye
Fantastic hurricane hole! If we had to go north, this would be the place. Good rates and there is a van available for 1 hour, no charge, for marina visitors. Susan & Elden Leaf s/v Soteria

River Dunes in Oriental, NC is about as nice as it gets. It is out in the boonies, but they have floating docks, a nice club house, hot tubs, swimming pool, bikes, wifi, exercise room and primo showers with AC. Oriental is a ten minute drive. They have a very nice loaner car, so no beater, and very competitive long term rates. I don’t care for marinas much and stay on a private mooring nearby, but we use River Dunes for all their services before and after cruises and feel at home there. Cheoah
We spent the night of Sunday 20th May at River Dunes on our Beneteau 50′. The marina facilities are first rate, the staff are helpful and professional, one of the nicest we have visited. We could not eat at the restaurant as it closes at 3pm on Sunday and doesn’t reopen until later in the week. The one big negative as far as we are concerned was the lack of cell phone reception – if you are with AT&T, basically there is no service, I am told others have spotty reception, to make thing worse the wifi does not really cover the marina docks well.
We kept our boat at River Dunes for two weeks while visiting family up north. We view the location as a perfect place to keep a boat secure. The staff is great and the showers are the best on the east coast!
Property is all the above comments say it is. Be aware Irene moved markers in Broad Creek around (more than a bit). You will come to a #4 private buoy well before the daymark #4. Coming in the creek, the pipes driven into the bottom mark the ~4 foot line. Stay to the creek side of these marks if you draw more. Lunch at M&M’s was well provisioned, well prepared, and very well served. Would certainly return. Oriental hardware store and Town and Country grocery are much more than they appear from the outside. Stayed at River Dunes twice in 2011. Both visits absolutely wonderful. JC and his staff are first rate, facility beautiful, protected, great food … a must stop north and south.
River Dunes, the safest Marina to dock your boat in a hurricane. No damage from Irene and when electric went off we had a generator for the fuel pumps. Just installed more floating docks with a few slips left to rent. What a great place. Clifford Kisby
After reading and hearing all the positive comments regarding River Dunes Marina up the Broad Creek north of Oriental, we were looking forward to the possibility of spending some of our summer cruising season with them. When we contacted the Dock Master and inquired about transient monthly rates we were informed that River Dunes has a ‘no live-aboard policy’ for stays in excess of one week. Oh well, I guess we’ll be looking elsewhere to spend a month. Linda Bernabucci M/V Live Wire II Selene 43
Please be aware that while the main dining room in the Harbor Club is open only on weekends, there is a chef prepared family style dinner served downstairs in the gathering room Sunday -Thursday. This is a great venue and has become a big hit.The fireplaces will be roaring and the wine a’flowing J. C. Cappelman
Just spent two nights at River Dunes off the Neuse River in Oriental, N.C. and toured this fantastic facility with J.C. Cappelmann, Director of Marina Operations and our former Dockmaster in Oxford. Very upscale and well thought out.. if you’re traversing the ICW and are near Oriental this is worth checking out … it’s definitely got my 5 star rating ! This is, indeed, the Ritz-Carlton of Marinas and will become your favorite stopover for a little quiet R&R in a most beautiful & protected setting … give it a shot … you can Thank me later. We just spent another wonderful afternoon & evening at River Dunes Marina, ICW Mile Marker 173 up Broad Creek about a mile. Where can a cruiser find such a hospitable marina that for $1.25 per foot you can enjoy the outdoor pool & Jacuzzi’s, exercise room, laundry, two courtesy cars, bikes, and I’m sure other items I have yet to experience. If you’re there on the weekend you can enjoy the fantastic view from there top-notch restaurant. Since stopping there last spring, J.C. and his team have installed outdoor fire pits that are sure to be a hit this fall & winter! If you find yourself thinking about stopping in the Oriental, NC area, give River Dunes a try, you won’t be disappointed! And no, we have no affiliation with River Dunes…other than satisfied customers! Todd & Brenda Lanning aboard Life’s2Short, 1985 40′ Oceania Trawler
River Dunes, near Oriental that has been advertised and posted on many sites does have the $1.25/ft, and all the amenities that everyone mentions and is a must stop for R&R. HOWEVER, they told us this deal is only temporary in order to get more people in to look at property. Look for them to raise prices to the $1.75 range next year if they sell more lots/build houses. So, I caution your readers to call for pricing before making reservations and then be surprised. But, even at $2, if one wants hot tubs, swimming, etc. first class, then, the $2 would be worth it. After you go up the Broad Creek, turn sharp to port up a small canal. You will not see the marina from Broad Creek as you would think, and could possibly end up traveling a couple more miles to another private facility that you can see from marker 4 by accident. John and Sue Winter aboard Just Relax
Good Afternoon All, We have spent the past 5 days at River Dunes Marina and are loving this place! River Dunes is located at M.M. #175 on the ICW, up Broad Creek on your port side. The Director of Ops, “J.C.”, and his team have gone above and beyond to make our stay an enjoyable one. For a $1.25 per foot you have use of all the facilities here at the marina. A wonderful pool, 4-star dining at very reasonable prices, exercise room, laundry, pump-out, courtesy car, and use of a golf-cart to tour the property. They even had “movie night” here on Sunday night for all the guests, complete with free popcorn! Life’s2Short is not used to staying in such a nice place and being pampered but the Admiral wanted some non-cruise time to get caught up on boat projects, as did the Captain. Boat projects in the morning and pool time in the afternoon, it just don’t get much better than this! I would highly recommend River Dunes if you are still headed north or perhaps this fall as you are headed south, you won’t be disappointed! Now if I can just convince the Admiral to untie the lines so we can head to Ocracoke! Todd & Brenda Lanning Life’s2Short
We stayed 2 nights in early May. It’s a great facility with floating docks in a very protected basin. They have a great clubhouse, deck pool, and steam showers to die for. The restaurant was only open on weekends when we visited. They also have a courtesy car for trips to Oriental although shopping is somewhat limited there. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. Watch the approach depths in Broad Creek if the winds are blowing the water out. Lots of crab pots in Broad Creek.
For all you Loopers heading north after the Rendezvous there is a good stop about 8 miles beyond Oriental at a new marina, River Dunes, on Broad Creek. At $1.00/ft. & elec. it’s a great stop. New floating docks, pool, exercise room, $1.00 washer/dryer, courtesy car to go to Oriental – very nice. Very protected harbor. Best to look them up on the Internet and call to get directions, http://www.riverdunes.com Ed & Linda Brennan Shore Thing
We are staying at River Dunes as I write this note. Just got back from a fantastic dinner at the restaurant and a long hot shower in one of the most superb showers I have ever been in, complete with a steam bath in the shower itself. Docking was a snap with all the room afforded in the fairways and basin. Dock hand, Meredith, was great and made us feel special. There was a golf cart for us to use to get around the grounds which are nothing less than beautiful. The water has been turned off at the docks but there is a faucet in the pool area that can be used with your jerry jugs. We will be sure to stop here again on our way north in the Spring.
As a home owner here it is a great place to live. New docks are going in as I write this to accomodate catamarans, tri hulls and every other type of wide vessels. No need to tie up on the dock ends because of extra wide boats. Probably the best hurricane hole in North Carolina.
Really a super staff on hand. Floating docks, like the marina, are new. The two times I have visited, I have been put in a slip with 50 amp service for my boat, which has 35 amp needs. Both times they supplied the conversion cord for me, no problem. I’ve not had a chance to try the restaurant, but I hear that it is excellent. The rest rooms are very nicely laid out, with a super high tech shower system. Nice at the end of a long day. And I especially liked staying here before sailing to Ocracoke. It gives me a shorter sail than from Oriental.
As you approach the channel entrance to the Broad Creek from the Neuse River, pay close attention to the markers. It is a 90 degree turn to port, followed by a 90 degree turn to starboard, followed by a 90 degree turn to port. It is one of those entrances that “visually” appears you can go straight in, but you would be wrong. Be wary of the same thing coming out! I have seen a number of boats both power and sail sitting aground next to the R24 scratching their head. Having said all that, I agree that River Dunes is one of the best spots along the ICW these days. Modern floating docks, easy in-out fuel dock, very nice head and shower facilities, a decent marine store, and a great restaurant all within the marina. Be sure and check on the restaurant hours and they are sometimes closed during the week. Peter
Subject: River Dunes Marina Cruising News: We had the pleasure of a short getaway to River Dunes Marina last week. What a delight! It was the perfect spot for an overnight or 2 day getaway from New Bern or Beaufort/Morehead City. The facility is beautiful, pool is a perfect spot to cool off and the staff is so helpful. The restaurant is not open Monday & Tuesday so we\\\’ll have to go back to try that as well. Great spot! Richard Becker
Subject: River Dunes Message: River Dunes is a fantastic Marina. It has everything and is brand new. JC was much more than just welcoming as he gave us a tour of the facility and even took our lines on arriving. This is one of the best Marina´s I´ve stayed at and with the cost of $1.00/foot, the best bargain ever. Broad Creek is well marked and the marina entrance is straight forward. The marina basin is very protected from any direction. Depths were in excess of 8 feet. Chas Hamilton
We stopped briefly at Riverdune a development near Oriental NC off the ICW at Broad Creek They are offering to have transients stop and visit at a rate of $1/ft. They have a wonderful clubhouse, deck and pool available for use. They also have a courtesy car for trips to Oriental. The harbor is extremely well sheltered from any storm. It is like a high end yacht club. Prices may be higher in season. This is a good alternative to Oriental harbor for boats on the ICW. http://www.riverdunes.com Greg and Susan Han Allegria — Krogen Whaleback
Subject: River Dunes, NC Cruising News: We recently had the pleasure of docking at River Dunes, North Carolina. River Dunes is a sheltered harbor located a few miles east of Oriental, just minutes off the Neuse River and the ICW. Our sailing club the “Carrot Island Yacht Club” recently held a rendezvous there. I have to say the experience was top notch from the moment we radioed that we were entering their channel to the day we departed. The staff was outstanding, helpful, friendly and accommodating. The facilities are second to none, including all new floating docks, fuel & pump out stations, hospitality center, restaurant, pool, hot tubs, cabanas, laundry, grills, fire pits, courtesy car, and bikes. If you need to sleep in a real bed on dry land, they have beautifully decorated and equipped cottages to rent. We have cruised extensively on the Eastern seaboard and can highly recommend River Dunes to anyone cruising in the area. Wayne & Vanessa Stryker

I leave my boat at Whittaker Point marina for several weeks which is in the aforementioned creek. Easy in if one stays in the channel. I had a problem with my windlass and the folks at Sailcraft shipyard (right across the creek)sent over a mechanic who removed the broken unit and repaired. Continuing north in a week. Windward
We kept our boat at Whittaker Point Marina this summer. It is a pretty sparkling facility, meaning new. Nice fixed docks in great condition, beautifully clean and comfortable clubhouse, nice pool. Ashley the dock master really looks out for your boat and he called a time or two when the wind got rough and toyed with our ailing bimini. It is close to Oriental, but remote enough to be super peaceful. The frogs chirping a bit at night is the only sound you’ll hear.
Take heed on the markers though, it goes from 6+ feet to knee deep in a hurry if you drift outside the markers. Saw about a 24 foot shoal keel sailboat get stranded once, and was only 1/2 an oar deep when I was fiddling in the dinghy on the other side of them.
Whittker Point in Oriental, clean friendly great Club House and Facilities,.If you want more city Bridgepoint Marina New Bern conveient resonable good Facilities. Casual
The Whittaker Point Marina just off the ICW is wonderful. They have a newly placed wave attenuator that really makes a huge difference in the calmness of the marina. The club house, pool, bathrooms and showers, etc. are lovely as are the natural surroundings. The dock master and mistress are very accommodating and now offer a courtesy car for short trips to the grocery or even the New Bern Airport. It is a 20 minute bike ride to the village and all that it has to offer. There is ample space for several big catamarans. Penny Flaherty
[The Whittake Creek entrance channel] hasn’t been dredged but the USCG has added some temporary green buoys to keep folks in the deep part of the channel. I go in and out all the time and typically see more than 6 feet. There is a front range when you are entering the channel and it keeps you in good water. The west side (or green side) of the channel is shoaling in and folks need to stay to the red side, but there is plenty of water. We have boats with 6 ft. draft in the marina all of the time. So to say it is 5.5 ft. controlling draft is misleading. Thanks, Ashley
Subject: Whittaker Pointe Marina Cruising News: There is fairly new marina in Oriental that is not listed on this Cruisers Net. Whittaker Pointe Marina is located at the entrance to Whittaker Creek at green marker #5 (mile 181). It is a beautiful marina in a beautiful location. The docks, club house and swimming pool are all in excellent condition and the view from the clubhouse is gorgeous. Although is is located a good distance from town by dinghy, there is a courtesy van available for transient use, making it easy to reprovision at the grocery and West Marine (which are quite a walk from the downtown marinas). The van is also available for a trip out to dinner at the many wonderful restaurants in Oriental. Ashley and Carol Erwin are the dockmasters and, having been a cruiser themselves, are always willing to help in any way. If there is no answer on Channel 16, transients are welcome to tie up to the t-dock and call Ashley on his cell phone 252-675-2554. For information in advance, call either 252-249-1750 (office) or 252-675-2554 (cell). It is a wonderful place to stay overnight or for a week or longer. Debbie

Whittaker Creek Yacht Harbor just northwest of Oriental NC is one of the most relaxing stays I have experienced in 5 years of cruising. The $11.00 a day slip with electricity included (that’s right Eleven) way more than made up for the less than new docks. It’s a short bike ride to a lot of fine restaurants and coffee shops. There’s a marine consignment shop with more stuff than I’ve seen in the Defender catalog. There is a hardware store close by, a grocery store, a marine supply store and a West Marine. They’re all within walking distance but might be to far for someone not used to walking, They are all withing less than 10 minutes biking distance. I spent three weeks there during the end of November and beginning of December, the best part of my stay was all the great people I met. I was invited to the Orphan Sailor Thanksgiving feast and spent quality time on board other sailor’s boats enjoying adult beverages. I highly recommend visiting, the owner, Knute, will make you feel welcome. If your boat draws more than 5’5″, you have to enter when there is no wind or when the wind is from a northerly quarter, a southerly wind drops the channel depth to less than 6 ft. It’s 6 1/2 ft with no wind and more than 7 with a wind from the north. For those unfamiliar with the Carolinas, there are no lunar or solar tides and the water levels are influenced by the winds. Henry Zalegowski on S/V Turn’er Loose
Shopping marinas to put our boat. We like Whittaker Creek, for a good neighborly feel, but here’s what we saw in March 2010. Piers in rougher shape than average. Some disaster happened to the clubhouse/pool, can’t figure what. Also, Whittaker seems to be specializing in selling really badly-treated boats. There are many of them about. Knute (bright spot) is very friendly, but the poorly treated boats that sprinkle the marina are a bad omen. Seems like a marina in decline. I’d repair some boards in the piers and segregate the bone-yard boats away from the general population. Not sure when the clubhouse gets wiped clean or rebuilt. Very friendly place, friendly boaters there though. We thought they were priced higher than the market for long term slips and their general condition.
We’re currently sitting at the Whittaker Creek Yacht Harbor. We have a 5′11″ draft and made it in here – barely. We did see 6′1″ on our depth sounder as we came down the marked channel. Over the past few days, with the wind blowing from the southwest, the water level dropped to 5 1/2ft, so you definitely have to watch the weather when you enter the channel. By the way – the Whittaker Creek Yacht Harbor is a pretty good place. The rates are very cheap with a BoatUS discount, the showers are decent, there’s a pool, the “residents” are very friendly and the owner – Knute – cares about everyone who stays here. We had to leave for a week and had both Knute and one of the liveaboards here watching our boat for us. The only downside is that you are not walking distance from town, but you are biking distance. Subject: Whittaker Creek Inlet Cruising News: If entering Whittaker Creek near Oriental, keep the green markers on your PORT side. Most GPS and charts seem to indicate keeping the markers on your starboard side. This is INCORRECT. Boats are grounding frequently due to this incorrect information. Ken Mahren
Subject: Whittaker Creek Yacht Harbor (Oriental, Statute Mile 181) – Advice on Navigating The Entry Channel Cruising News: To add some additional info here. When entering and exiting this channel, local knowledge favors the red markers and uses the range at the back of the channel. Whampoa draws nearly 5 feet and this has worked well so far (knock on wood!) but the channel is thin especially when there have been extended south and southwest winds which tend to blow the water out of the creek. The tide here is predominantly wind driven with N/NE winds driving the water into the creek and S/SW moving the water out of the creek. We have also seen a few folks inbound turn to port between G#5 and G#7 and many promptly run aground. When inbound keep G#5 to port and don’t cut it to close as there appears to be some shoaling close to G#5. Good luck. Regards, John SV Whampoa
Subject: New Info – Whittaker Creek Entrance Channel (Statute Mile 181, Oriental, NC) Cruising News: Two new green cans, 3A and 5A, have recently been set in the entrance channel to Whittaker Creek. This has had the effect of further narrowing the channel as the shoaling continues to build out from the left side of the channel as seen when entering. Local reports indicate the water depths are good close to these new cans. The private range at the back of the channel is still useful but the new green cans must be considered as well when using this channel. I have not seen these new cans show up in the LNM or on any updated charts but the cans are certainly in place as of 7/12/09. Regards, John

Very knowledgeable and helpful dock hands. Laid back marina, great place to stop. Great atmosphere due to the friendly folks running it. Showers are super clean and they provide towels, soap, and shampoo. Tiki bar is cash-only. All-in costs seem to be about $2.25 a foot.
Great help getting us in. Adequate depth under our 4' keel. Bathrooms good. Restaurant was closed, but we've eaten good food here before and were disappointed we arrived on the only day closed during the week. However, great meal at M&M's restaurant a short walk away. My wife likes shopping in this little town.
7-2-17 . Last time here 7 1/2 years ago and just as great then as now!. Left Belhaven for Oriental. Tom and Joe helped us tie up. Tom owner. Pole docks with small finger slips. Tiki bar and Toucan grill still open and food great. Wifi strong as is Verizon. Great dog spots right off back of boat. Showers great- even provide towels.Very sheltered marina and Joe-dock hand- the best. Don’t know yet re the w/d or cable. Small grocery less than a mile away- nice for bicycle ride. Still one of our very favorites! Ice cream across is a musty stop!!
The Oriental Marina is in downtown Oriental, has twelve slips, and is much more protected than other marinas in the area. It has a full service hotel, a restaurant, and exceptionally clean showers. Once there, most all of Oriental’s shopping and eating facilities are within a short walking distance. John M.
Located just off the Neuse River across from the ICW entrance to Adams Creek, this marina is within the quaint village of Oriental. The harbor entrance is a quick turn to starboard just after the breakwater entrance to Smith & Greens Creek, and well before the highway bridge. The marina is at the dead end of the harbor, and has dockage available in several fixed slips. Fuel is available and the marina has a pool and a restaurant. There are a few nearby stores and other restaurants. Oriental is a favored harbor location for sail boaters. There is also a good size commercial fishing fleet that uses the harbor. Ray Kurlak
Cruising News: The Oriental Marina in NC continues to provide great accommodations and a wonderful stop. We are so glad that some fine things remain consistent. Here and Now
We do very few marinas, but we love this one. Great showers, friendly staff, and good on-site restaurant. A bunch of us were stuck there for three days because of the weather and the dockmaster drove us to the grocery and a fresh produce market. We have also gotten rides back from the grocery folks after walking the mile to get there. A good chandlery-hardware store-gift shop a half block away and lots of good restaurants. Not to be missed!
We spent a week at Oriental Marina. Very nice and helpful marina personnel. The only negative I find is the lack of pump out capability. Especially in light of a week’s stay. We enjoyed a meal at M&M while enjoying a lovely sunset. Also, there’s a very nice art store, Down East Canvas & Gallery, located just across the main road (at the bridge) from the other Oriental marina. Lovely original watercolors. Additionally, the store owners do marine canvas work. One item of note. We needed to get to a pharmacy as well as having the desire for a larger grocery store. A lady heard me asking the marina personnel how far a walk it would be. After learning the trek could be at least 10 miles, she offered to drive my wife and I, strangers to her, to handle the errands. One of the many examples of the great people we’ve met along our way. Below/south of Belhaven is Oriental…you need to stop in Oriental, NC on the way down the ditch… Very Very Very cruiser friendly, low key and down to earth!!! First choice for dockage is the Oriental Marina…this is the original, small marina (maybe 12 slips) in the old part of town – it has a pool and restaurant immediately there, and you can walk everywhere (actually, you can walk everywhere in Oriental no matter where you are) -http://www.orientalmarina.com/ http://www.towndock.net/harborcam/ – this shows a webcam of the dozen slips at Oriental Marina. http://www.visitoriental.com/ Make sure you you stop – you can anchor out just above the bridges – bear to port at the fork and anchor… dinghy dock at the east end of the docks of the Oriental Marina. Frank & Chris Erwin
Oriental Marina, good location, friendly folks. A few good stores nearby to get whatever you may be missing, the local supermarket is within (long) walking distance. Pascal M/Y Charmer (70′ Johnson)
I know from my last visit [to Oriental] that there are several restaurants within walking distance, the best being Toucan Grill at Oriental Marina. A grocery store is about 1 mile away from Oriental Marina. Oriental Marina is very animal friendly. Limited number of slips, maybe 10? There are 2 ‘Free’ docks adjacent to Oriental Marina but they have always been occupied and they are shallow. The basin Oriental Marina is in is easy to access and their slips are very well protected. There is also a well equipped ships store and provisioning store 1 block from Oriental Marina. Oriental downtown is small revitalized 3 or 4 block section with some gift, antique, and knick knack shops and some restaurants and snack shops. Fresh seafood available in season otherwise fresh frozen. Pat Banyas s/v Marguerite

This is a nice stop. Very helpful Staff. Restaurant across street. Came in during storm and staff was helpful.
We stayed at Oriental Harbor Marina July 3 and 4, tied to the outer bulkhead. What a great place to see the fireworks, just on the other side of the Rte. 55 bridge! The weather was calm, so we didn’t get bounced around too much. There’s been a change since we were there last – Oriental Marina (no Harbor) is now handling transient reservations and docking assistance for Oriental Harbor Marina. So contact Oriental Marina on the VHF or by phone. The folks from Oriental Marina come right over by bicycle to give you hand when needed. Excellent service! Jim Starr S/V Snap Dragon
Matthews Point Marina up the Neuse on Clubfoot Creek is a good haven per your book. Water depth is 5.5′, but it is easy to get in and out (N34.54.383, W076.45.804). Facilities are still about the same as described in your book. We recommend it for a stop on the way to/from New Bern/Trent River. John and Sue Winter aboard Just Relax
We love this place. We shopped about 4-5 marinas in March 2010 to put our for-us-new boat and Matthews Point is well-maintained, friendly, casual, beautiful, and well-loved. They take care of the facility like I take care of my home. Dockmaster Paul is helpful and friendly. Making it there our boat-home.
Please excuse me adding to my previous comments on Northwest Creek Marina but, with the passing of Hurricane Irene recently I really feel it’s worth adding: The standard of preparation and service at this marina went WAY beyond anything we have experienced in any other marina. During the storm (“during”,mind you) the staff were OUT ON THE DOCKS checking and adjusting the boats’ lines and hauling boats when needed. Carol & I were safely tucked into the hotel overlooking the marina throughout the storm and took videos (which can be seen at HurricaneIrene.Muttlets.Com) of the staff working in 60mph winds and water up to their chests. Several owners had left headsails up and the staff went round removing them and stowing them safely (remember, Irene was expected to be a cat2+ hurricane on arrival). They had lines strung across the marina channels to reduce any damage which might be caused if a boat did break away. They dismantled all the mains power units. After the storm, we had power back on the docks just as soon as the power company had returned power to the Fairfield Harbour area and all the cross channel lines cleared ready for the next weekend. I can’t say enough good things about this marina. It just keeps getting better! Please see HurricaneIrene.Muttlets.Com. They really earned the money we pay there and more (although I won’t tell them that, just in case!).
Carol & I bought our boat (Whitby 42) in February ’11, local to New Bern. We berthed her here at the marina intending to stay a month. The marina and marina staff and the staff of the Hurricane hotel/restaurant were so pleasant and helpful and the work we got done was done so well and promptly that we extended to 3 months. Then, in addition to the friendliness of the people (staff and berth-holders) we decided that we should really be cruising here while we had the chance… extension to 6 months! We have lived-aboard in many marinas up the east coast but we totally agree that this is the most enjoyable one we have stayed at (although not live-aboard). We live in Florida and have to feel confident that the boat will be well taken care of; and we are. The staff are excellent at the marina. We know it’s a long chug or sail up to New Bern but this place is well worth a visit at least and if you are leaving your boat for a while, this is one of the most reliable places to do so. If you want work done on the boat, there are people who will set a schedule and actually stick to it (what a concept!) and do a great job (am I allowed to mention Harvey Smith, a very local diesel expert who does tremendous work at an excellent rate?).
Called there in March 2010. Good slip rates for long-term boats. Quite competitive for what you get. Many amenities (A fitness center – wow!). Too far up the Neuse for us, but well worth considering.

Subject: Galley Stores Marina New Bern Cruising News: We arrived here on Memorial Day and the marina is now open. This is a great location in downtown New Bern, with new, full length floating docks and all types of electrical hook ups. They have a nice pump out system, with in-slip pump out available in the larger slips; good pump outs are hard to find in this neck of the woods! The well managed small grocery store on site has or can get any kind of provisions you desire, and they have on-line provisioning available for advance ordering. Great selection of beer and wine. Private bathrooms with showers are new and top notch. Marina tenants get an additional 5 cents off per gallon of fuel, and volume discounts are available. Good restaurants, and the great Mitchell\’s Hardware are just a couple of blocks away, as are nice parks for dog walking. Loaner bikes are on hand too. The setting is right in the lovely Historic District. It is a short walk further to the rest of downtown. You also avoid dealing with the bridge construction, and once the bridge is finished in November, you will avoid dealing with having it opened for you if you need more than 13 feet. The only downside is that it is not quite as sheltered as the two “inside the bridge” marinas, especially from the south east, but the big docks do a good job of cutting down the chop. They are eager for new customers, so give Mark Mangum a call; he will quote you a very reasonable rate. I think we will stay here the rest of the spring, and we\’d love some neighbors!

Fantastic hurricane hole! If we had to go north, this would be the place. Good rates and there is a van available for 1 hour, no charge, for marina visitors.

We will be back!!
Chris
Stayed at River Dunes twice in 2011. Both visits absolutely wonderful. JC and his staff are first rate, facility beautiful, protected, great food … a must stop north and south.
River Dunes, the safest Marina to dock your boat in a hurricane. No damage from Irene and when electric went off we had a generator for the fuel pumps. Just installed more floating docks with a few slips left to rent. What a great place.

Please be aware that while the main dining room in the Harbor Club is open only on weekends, there is a chef prepared family style dinner served downstairs in the gathering room Sunday -Thursday. This is a great venue and has become a big hit.The fireplaces will be roaring and the wine a’flowing

Good Afternoon All,
We have spent the past 5 days at River Dunes Marina and are loving this place!

Best to look them up on the Internet and call to get directions, http://www.riverdunes.com

Shore Thing

Cruising News: We had the pleasure of a short getaway to River Dunes Marina last week. Great spot!

Message: River Dunes is a fantastic Marina.

Cruising News: We recently had the pleasure of docking at River Dunes, North Carolina.
