We really enjoyed this park. What a fantastic time we had! Lots of activities for kids and adults. The education of the Keys waters was super. And being a park, it was a DEAL for The Keys. We will do this stop again for sure! We even got local knowledge of a spot to snorkel “off the beaten path” and were directed to Carysfort Reef and it was spectacular! I needed to desparatel get to the pump out at the marina. I called ahead and told them I did not have a lot of experience running the 44 ft catamaran I was sailing thru keys with my family. They told me where to find the pump out dock. I asked about the wind and they informed me it was blowing hard onto the dock. Tough conditions. When I got in they had three captains at the dock to lend a hand. After one aborted attempt we docked welland safely in very challenging conditions. I sat and talked with them all about the exit off the dock and got some great advice. Got off safe and well. They are truly a fantastic group.
I get a mixed bag of comments regarding entrance to Largo Sound…I will be arriving in Leopard 43 which draws 4’3” Is it possible to enter into the Sound…would love to experience the park from inside??? I appreciate the help.
In Key Largo, depending on your draft, John Pennecamp park has moorings with great access to many local restaurants, the Fish House and Shipwrecks at the top. Too many waterholes to list, Most with great sunset views. Fishing, diving and snorkeling choices are many. Don’t miss snorkeling Molasses Reef or a dive on the Spiegel Grove. Ocean divers has a great dive program. Swim with the dolphins at dolphins plus. Then spend some time enjoying boating. Hank
It’s fun to stay at John Pennekamp State Park on Key Largo. They have a few slips for big or small boats and lots of mooring space for small boats. We stayed there in our 53 ft. Hatteras right at the park dock. Very interesting to go in through the marked mangrove channels and plenty of water depth with minimum of 5 ft. plus. Take the park boat to snorkel or scuba at the underwater state park coral reef or just go out and grab a free govt. mooring ball with your own boat (watch the charts carefully). Great park to walk around there and some minimal park type food, but nothing else you can walk to. Depending on how far you usually cruise, you can easily make that your only stop between Marathon and Miami with two 50 NM days or so. Doug
It was with some trepidation that we decided to come into the park~ after all the cruising descriptions ” CRASH CORNER”, and “DANGEROUS TURN” gave some pause! Channel is well marked, we never saw less than 6′ on a mid tide, all the Cruise Boat ( they have a set schedule so you can call ahead and avoid the big cruise boat if need be) and Dive Boat operators are courteous and the Park Dockmaster Scott coudn’t be more welcoming. There is laundry on premises and several nice restaurants, a Publix and a West Marine are within a mile walk. Slips have electric, water and there is a good working pump out. We stayed three nights over Thanksgiving weekend 2010. The facilities were fine, but the showers weren’t available since a contractor was working on the park facilities. Our only complaint was the no-see-ums, which were voracious when the wind wasn’t howling. Helpful folks at the marina, and acted like they were actually glad we were there!
Jana and I enjoyed 2 days at Pennecamp between xmas and new years on our 45′ sundancer (Sun Dog). If you carefully stay in the marked channel, you’ll be fine. We never saw less than 6′ depths. Mike Griffin
John Pennekamp park. Weʼve stayed at the marina and on a mooring. The marina is really for commercial tourist boats and not well suited for pleasure craft. The Lagoon entrance is shallow, maybe 4 feet, the moorings limited (get reservations) and have little protection from strong northerlies. To enjoy the park you must dinghy around back to the marina. I called John Pennecamp Park Marina to ask about a slip. They said that the channel in was only 4.5 feet deep at high tide and that the bottom was rocky. Definitely not for me — I draw 5.5 Dick Mills SV Tarwathie

These folks could not have been nicer or more accommodating. The facility is small and an eclectic mixture of weekend-use boats from J-boats to a pristine Island Packet to major-project live-aboards. The walk to stores and restaurants is about 1/2 a mile. One caution is that the gates to the marina are locked at 9pm.

We’ve been cruising to Mangrove Marina for many years; the rates WERE reasonable, dockmates were (and still are) very friendly, and the location is excellent. NOW, we find rates have gone up after we made reservations, electric is no longer included in the dock rate (they now charge $85/month for 30 amp electric), a swimming pool is only partly completed and is best for mosquito farmers, the “food truck” hasn’t been opened at all since we’ve been here, income seems to be not used at all for maintenance and improvements, parking space has been reduced, and the bathroom/showers haven’t been cleaned in the past few days.
While the boat has been here over a two months, we’ve just been here a month. if you are looking for a marina on the bay side of the keys I’d highly recommend Mangrove Marina in Tavernier. Docks are combo of fixed concrete and wood. There isn’t a tidal swing, but the wind does push water in and out of the cove, total swing is about 18″. Water depth coming in is ok if you are 4′ or less. Call the marina office and get a route if you draw 5′ Within a 10 minute walk: Win-Dixy, movies, post office, McDonalds, hospital, 6 restaurants, hardware store and liquor store. A bike ride will add three more places to eat, a beach and a marine parts store. There is a lunch truck on site that has Breakfast / Lunch Sat and Sun, and a special dinner (Prime Rib, stuffed pork tenderloin, etc. ) on Wednesday night. Gas, diesel, ice, pumpouts. If you are staying, there are weekly pumpouts on the docks. Lots of liveaboards here made us feel welcome. There is the only Marching Conch Band in the Keys here! Nightly docktails at sunset. Lots of good fishing locations a 5-10 min dink ride away. Location is Keys MI 92. Car rental across the road will match Enterprise rates. With the weather forecast predicting a change in wind direction to WSW on Wednesday night and Thursday, we knew we would soon need to move, so today we headed north 20 miles to Mangrove Marina, located at Tavernier in a very protected and lovely harbor. This is a great spot for relatively shallow draft vessels to sit out bad weather. They have lots of live-aboards here, nice restrooms/showers and laundry (6 washers and 6 dryers), shopping nearby (half mile), plus a rental car place just a couple of blocks away. We are currently here. We really like this marina. Personnel very friendly and nice. You have to call on cell as they don’t monitor 16 and they don’t really have any dock help but the docks, laundry, showers, rest rooms are great. Ice ($2 10#) and some items at small ships store but most everything is within walking distance. POUTs are on each dock and done weekly. I again could not get the cable to work, but they have cable boxes for the long term residents. Entrance to marina/harbor is well marked and depths are about 4.5-5′. M&M Rhett “Lady Soul II”

Visited here in March 2010. Did not use docks, instead anchored out in Community Harbor. Marina’s shoreside services were very good in all respects. Staff helpful, VERY clean showers, etc. Nice relaxing gazabo on shore…for the use of dockholders and dingy dock folks. Dingy dock rates $10/day. Stores, restaurants, movies, stores, hospital, etc. withen easy walking distance. We spent 6 days at anchor in the harbor due to weather. Was 360 protected and anchor held 1st time. Anchorage about 5 ft depth. Strongly recommend Community Harbor as a well protected, with all services available (as if dockside), anchorage. Howard Staley

We are on the T Dock…We have been at marina for a year…The dock-master and assistants are fine people. Nice clean restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, pump out at each dock, electric and wifi. A very quiet marina, with great boaters (both transient and f/t). Being in Founders Park is a BIG plus. Yes, you have to pay to use the pool…but it is worth it. The tennis courts are available anytime, the beach is great, AND there is a 2 acre fenced dog park!!! If you want to go out to eat, it is only a taxi call away. Diesel, gas, ice…all available. Highly desirable for the sunsets too!!! Laurie Facsina
Overall nice marina with slip pump-outs, nice showers, and laundry room. Tim is helpful and friendly, but the pool, tennis courts, and beach are a pay for use city facility. The resteraunts are a mile away, bt you can dingy to one of them(1 mile). $3.00 a foot.
We are currently at Plantation, arrived yesterday. Could not get anyone on 16 but a phone call got quick response and we were met by two dock hands who were very professional and knew their stuff. Slips are big for our 2665 Regal but everything is very nice and set up to protect your boat. This is a marina attached to a park with everything but a restaurant on site, pool, tennis, soccer, baseball, volley ball. Showers, laundry in top shape. POUTs at each slip. Nice beach part of park, check for sunsets. Fuel and ice available, fuel $4.98 yesterday. Walked to Chilly Willys last night 1/4 mile walk, $10-20, good food. M & M Rhett “Lady Soul II”

Like a magnet we are always drawn back to this great marina. Tim and his crew just have it right. Friendly, knowledgable, and very professional. The marina is well protected and very modern. Tennis, beautiful beach, huge pool, clean showers and rest rooms. Dockside pumpouts. Entertainment and great eateries are nearby but require a car. First class in every respect. I recommend Plantation Yacht Club Marina in Islamorada for anyone with a boat that doesn’t draw more than 5′ and who wants good protection from these blasted fronts in the Keys. The mangrove breakwater makes the whitecaps out on Florida Bay a non-issue. John is their terrific dockmaster with an amusing sense of humor. A marina slip includes all the amenities of Founders’ Park: a sheltered beach with showers; bocce, volleyball, and tennis courts; a huge pool; a dog park; a community band shell with free concerts; picnic tables and gas grills that work; locked showers and lundry room for marina residents; and cable and pump outs at EVERY slip, a real luxury. Fuel prices are great too.
Was assistant dockmaster there for a spell-nice bunch of liveaboards and always an opening for transients, ask for John for the best and friendliest help, get a taxi to Lazy Days for the best fish anywhere. Lorelei for sunsets, avoid Trading Post for groceries unless you like to pay double, boat over to the sandbar halfway out of whale harbor oceanside at low tide for a nice walkabout on the sand, take a fold up chair and a six pack ( please don’t litter) and kick back. We have been to Plantation Yacht Harbor many times. We like it. It is somewhat laid back. No restaurants or food available. It is too far to walk for dining or for a supermarket. You must hail a cab. Last year, the Marina was completely redone with new concrete piers and pilings. It is a lovely family atmosphere with a large sandy beach and a large pool. The bathrooms were cared for. Havent’ been there in a year or so, it’s my favorite place. freindly staff, little beach, swimming pool, park, etc… many restaurants within walking distance, no provisioning nearby except a hardware store and a convenience store. it’s short drive to the Windixie in Tavernier though. Pascal

Stayed here 3 nights over Christmas. Nice friendly marina full of mostly long term tenants. The price structure for transients is a bit confusing….for us it came out to $2.60 per foot plus $10 a night for 30 amp electric.
Be aware there are NO finger docks at all here, you must tie up med-moor style with either your bow or stern butted up to the concrete pier, which might be a problem if you have a bow pulpit and dinghy on davits in the way.
Great location walking distance to a dozen good restaurants and shopping.
My experience here is: Nice place, Beautiful Sunsets, sandy beach outdoor seating with torches lit, nice atmosphere, great live entertainment, kids have room to run, mediocre food. Been here several times and never had a problem with the staff but then again I was eating or drinking until I left….. you can sit at the bar and listen to the music if you’re not going to order food, it’s just as close to the stage as the sandy area, just on the other side of the stage and still outdoors. We also anchored off the Lor-E-Lei and went in for refreshments and dinner. It was early so we sat at the bar (in the shade) and had a few adult beverages and then had dinner. Dinner was OK except the Fritters were raw inside. We paid, no complaining, and headed to the outside to sit and listen to the entertainment which had just kicked off. One more beer and we were heading back to the boat. The Waitress rudely informed us that we could not sit out there unless we ordered food. No signs stating such. I told her that I had already spent 50 bucks with tip and she said,”I make my money from tips.” and told us we could not sit. Rude wait staff will always cause patrons to leave. Stay away from this place unless that is OK with you. John and Susan
