    • Anchoring Ordinance Requirements at Folly Beach, SC

Our thanks to Ted Arisaka of Save Georgia’s Anchorages for this information. Such stringent restrictions are almost always passed by officials who are not boaters and do not understand the mechanics of and safety requirements for anchoring. There are 3 recommended anchorages near the Folly River launch ramp, a heavily trafficked ramp with walking distance of downtown Folly Beach. Open Chartview and click the anchor symbol to show the anchorages locations.

Last year Folly Beach passed an ordinance requiring:

      1) an anchoring permit for even one night
      2) a 1 mile setback from any public boat ramp
      3) a 1 mile setback from any bridge
      4) other more reasonable setbacks from docks, marinas

#2 and #3 seem excessive.  I was able to download the list of boat ramps from SC DNR and map them.  You can draw a one mile radius circle around each of these placemarks to see what the impact would be if this were implemented statewide.  (and this does not include the bridge setback).

      Regards,
      Ted

    • Maintaining Your Dock Lines by Bill Parlatore

It is a good idea at this time of year to put on a pair of mechanic’s gloves, uncoil each dock line in turn, and carefully run them through your fingers to find and remove any foreign matter that inevitably works into the braided or three-strand nylon. Our thanks to experienced yachtsman and frequent contributor to Cruisers Net, Bill Parlatore, for this article.

    • New SC Bill to Deal with Derelict Vessels

Boaters have long used South Carolina’s public waterways to store or abandon their derelict vessels. If a new bill passes in the General Assembly, they may soon have to take responsibility for them.

    • Disturbing Facts Affecting the Environment

More than 500 billion disposable plastic cups are sold every year and most can’t be recycled through curbside programs. Our thanks to Winston Fowler for sharing these facts from 4Oceans.org.

Your disposable coffee cup might seem like it can be recycled, but most single-use paper cups are lined with a fine film of polyethylene which makes the cup liquid-proof but also difficult and expensive to reprocess, because the materials have to been separated. Most waste processing plants will treat the cups as trash.

Plastics have become essential components of products and packaging because they’re durable, lightweight, and cheap. But though they offer numerous benefits, plastics originate as fossil fuels and emit greenhouse gases from cradle to grave, according to a May 2019 report called “Plastic & Climate: The Hidden Costs of a Plastic Planet,” released by the Center for International Environmental Law, a nonprofit environmental law organization.

      Hello to All!

We hope you’ve all been weathering this cold streak. Our nation has been facing colder weather in areas that clearly enjoy warmer temps, including New Bern. We wanted to remind everyone to please be sure to let the water lines trickle if Jeremy & team have those on. In the event of freezing weather, they must allow those lines to run just a bit so the pipes won’t freeze.

Additionally, we wanted to provide an update on the marina’s current New Year’s Sale. To date, Thomas has sold 114 boat slips, 5 of those are pending. At current time, we are offering a 12% discount on all boat slips. I would encourage you call Thomas to schedule a COVID friendly appointment. I’ve listed his number below.

The boating industry continues to grow and flourish as healthy outdoor activities have a heightened interest. We see those consumer behaviors causing occupancy rates to remain strong and sales to be of particular interest to avid boaters everywhere.

Last, by not least, the marina participated in a virtual event, Looper PaLooza, supporting the AGLCA (America’s Great Looper’s Cruising Association). The event was a fun filled educational event where prospective looper’s and cruisers can chat with virtual exhibitors (maritime industry businesses such as marinas, yacht brokers, lenders, cruising support organizations, and many more). If you’d like to watch the video from the marina’s Lunch & Learn session, please click here: Lunch & Learn-New Bern Grand Marina Yacht Club – YouTube

As you can see, things are always busy here at our beautiful marina. Please reach out to one of our amazing team members should you need any assistance.

      Thank you,
