      Shall We Say Goodbye to ‘Small Craft Advisory’

      and Hello to ‘Small Craft Warning’?

      BoatUS supports proposal to simplify critical warning messages;

      NWS invites boaters to weigh in

      SPRINGFIELD, Va., April 15, 2020 — In a move that could simplify and potentially reduce misunderstanding of urgent weather messages used by recreational boaters to make critical boating safety decisions, the National Weather Service (NWS) has proposed renaming “Small Craft Advisory” to “Small Craft Warning” and is asking for boaters’ feedback. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) urges boaters to speak up now by taking a NWS survey for recreational boaters at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VZGX6BF. The survey closes May 24, 2020.

      “Every day they go boating, boat owners check the weather and then make the decision to either head out or not,” said BoatUS Government Affairs Manager David Kennedy. “We think the name change will help clarify what this means, leading to a better understanding of the severity of a marine weather forecast, and help give recreational boaters the information they need to make smart choices about boating safely.”

      For decades, NWS has used the Watch, Warning, and Advisory (WWA) system to alert users about forecasted hazards, but it has recognized this can be confusing. The proposal to rename a “Small Craft Advisory” to a “Small Craft Warning” is part of a larger effort to reduce the messages to just two flagship headline terms: Watch and Warning. NOAA also says the name change would better align with all other marine warnings – Gale, Storm, and Hurricane Force Wind – leading to greater understanding by recreational boaters.

      Changing from an “advisory” to “warning” would not change the term’s definition or meaning. While there is no precise definition of a “small craft,” today a “Small Craft Advisory” is issued when sustained wind speeds or frequent gusts have reached 20 to 33 knots and/or seas or waves 4 feet and greater and/or waves or seas are potentially hazardous. The requirements vary slightly by region, and local conditions may also dictate issuing a Small Craft Advisory.

    • Morehead City Yacht Basin, COVID-19 Update, NC AICW Statute Mile 203

      Morehead City Yacht Basin

      Morehead City Yacht Basin, A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR, is located on the southern flank of the marked channel that runs west from Mile 203 of the Waterway, just north of the Morehead-Beaufort high-rise bridge.

      Update for Morehead City Yacht Basin

      “Morehead City Yacht Basin is open for transients and fueling. Morehead City does not show any signs of limiting boaters ability to re-provision in the city as Beaufort, NC has done. North Carolina is under an Order by the Governor to not limit any movement to essential needs like food, medical, fuel, etc. You may do so in Morehead City as long as it is essential. The restaurant next to the marina, Floyd’s, remains open to take out, as well as several other restaurants in the area. We ask that you stay on your boat except for any essential needs and that you use social distancing throughout the marina. We have a limited staff that will help you dock and fuel. We ask that you give a credit card over the phone as well as an email address for the reservation form and receipts.”

        Good luck. We are all but begging Ny, CT and MHs not to come to Maine (it’s the LAW) but they come anyway… total self absorbed losers.

          Well Maggie, since you are all self-sufficient up there, I guess we can tell all our truck drivers to stop delivering goods from other States to ME

      New Chart for Bimini Harbour Entrance

      Posted: 09 Apr 2020 11:37 AM PDT

      The shoal at the entrance to Bimini Harbour continues to move south and has necessitated moving the approach waypoint. Above is the updated section of the approach chart. The channel entrance is still continuing to change and will probably require more updates. Vessels exiting the Bahamas via Bimini should use visual piloting and disregard older charts negotiating the bar here. Buoys are shown in their current positions but it should not be expected that they will remain there or even properly mark the the best approach to Bimini in the future.

        DC Marina is definitely strategically located at the west end of the long Alligator River Canal. Great people managing a great marina.
