    • LNM: AICW MM 536 Schedule Change, Comment Period Ending Soon,Ladys Island Bridge, Beaufort, SC

This reminder from Ted Arisaka: Comment period ends May 20.

Three and a half hours to accommodate “rush hour” vehicle traffic twice daily seems extreme, especially during summer months. Please see Comment Portal link below to submit your opinions. With a closed vertical clearance of 30ft, the Ladys Island Bridge crosses the Waterway at statute mile 536 on the eastern edge of Beaufort. Vessels capable of transiting without an opening may pass under the bridge.

SOUTH CAROLINA – AICW (BEAUFORT RIVER) –LADY’S ISLAND (WOODS MEMORIAL) BRIDGE: Rulemaking / Temporary Deviation:
The Coast Guard is proposing to change the operating schedule that governs the Lady’s Island (Woods Memorial) Bridge across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Beaufort River), mile 536.0, at Beaufort, SC. SCDOT has requested a permanent change to the drawbridge operation regulation for the Lady’s Island (Woods Memorial) Bridge. This temporary deviation will test an operating schedule to determine if a permanent change is necessary.
Under this temporary deviation, the Lady’s Island (Woods Memorial) Bridge shall open on signal; except that the draw need not open from 6 a.m. to 9:29
a.m. and 3:31 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays. Between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays, the draw need open only once an hour on the half hour. Public vessels of the United States and tugs with tows, will be passed through anytime.
This temporary deviation is effective from 12:01 a.m. on March 25, 2024, through 11:59 p.m. on September 29, 2024. A request for comments will be published in the Federal Register. Comments may be submitted under docket number USCG-2024-0198 using Federal Decision Making Portal at https://www.regulations.gov. • NOAA increases the frequency of nautical chart updates

NOAA is increasing the frequency of nautical chart updates
Electronic navigational chart updates will now be available for download Monday through Friday

NOAA electronic navigational charts (NOAA ENC®) are vector data sets that support all types of marine navigation. Originally designed for large commercial vessels, ENCs are used in computer navigation programs and mobile applications on many types of ships, including recreational vessels. NOAA ENCs provide real time ship positioning, as well as collision and grounding avoidance.

Updates for NOAA ENCs have historically been published weekly but updates are now being pushed daily, Monday through Friday. These updates include weekly Notice to Mariners corrections and additional critical changes, as well as the routine addition of newly compiled data, such as hydrographic or shoreline surveys. Critical updates include any changes that may pose a danger to navigation and that mariners should be informed of as soon as possible. This may include newly discovered rocks, wrecks, shoals, or other dangers to navigation, as well as changes in the positions or characteristics of aids to navigation (buoys, beacons, and lights). NOAA applies critical corrections to its NOAA ENC products and these updates are released as ENC revision files.

All non-critical data is categorized as “routine” and includes the results of ordinary hydrographic and shoreline surveys, which can be extensive. Routine source data is ONLY applied to NOAA ENCs and not to paper and raster nautical charts. Any specific dangers revealed during routine surveys or the application of other routine data are extracted from the data and classified as critical corrections to be applied to all products.

The chart updates viewer shows the areas that have changed on each ENC since its last new edition was published and can be found here: https://distribution.charts.noaa.gov/weekly_updates/.

NOAA ENCs may be downloaded through the Office of Coast Survey’s Chart Downloader page. These downloads are available through individual compressed files or pre-packaged compressed files here:  https://charts.noaa.gov/ENCs/ENCs.shtml.

NOAA Office of Coast Survey is the nation’s nautical chart-maker. Originally formed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807, Coast Survey updates charts, surveys the coastal seafloor, responds to maritime emergencies, and searches for underwater obstructions that pose a danger to navigation.
