SPARRING WITH MOTHER NATURE ~~ latest addition. I’m very honored that you’re following along. Thank you from the bottom of my writer’s heart.

Ah, the life of a liveaboard Sailor…on a Classic Wooden Sailing Yacht… as of August 1st, 2024 we are undergoing extensive repair and refit and will be for several months(!). In boating terms we are hauled out “on the hard” in Cambridge, Maryland.

I plan to mix Sailing Stories with the challenges and intricacies of restoring a 90-year-old boat. I’m always open to suggestions as to content….please feel free to weigh in as we manage and learn from this unexpected joust. Thank you. J

Our thanks to Perry McDonald for this timely reminder! A great way to lift your spirits and get into the Holiday frame of mind.
The Annual Nights of Lights dazzles with more than three million lights adorning every corner of the historic district for two months.
This award-winning holiday lights display runs from Saturday, November 23, 2024, to January 26, 2025, in historic St. Augustine. During the seasonal display, businesses downtown stay open later, letting you dine with a view of the lights and browse the shops in the decorated buildings.
The trains and trolleys offer special seasonal tours that take you through the most lit up areas, and there are also a variety of specialty tours — everything from walking to electric cart tours, and even tours to see the lights from the water and from the air.

In 2024, the Conservancy tackled many park renovations. Some of the highlights include:

Seasonal displays at Rose Pavilion, Marion Square, Hazel Parker and Tiedemann Nature Center have brought vibrant color making these beloved parks even more inviting year-round.
The revitalization of Vangie Rainsford Park included clearing out overgrown plants and the addition of shade-loving annuals and perennials.
Mitigating flood waters with the installation of bioswales at Tiedemann Park & Nature Center.
Supporting the urban eco-corridor with the installation of a pollinator habitat at Corrine Jones Park & Community Garden.
The revitalization of Wragg Square brought new life to this historic park, with reimagined gardens and restored pathways, creating a welcoming space for community events.
Expanding our donation programs through the installation of the Mulberry Park Food Forest & the cut flower garden at Magnolia Community Garden.

We’re Not Stopping

In 2025, we’re taking on even bigger projects like the revitalization of 3 acres of gardens at Colonial Lake, which is underway and will be completed next year. Allan Park will be getting a refresh and we are thrilled to expand our urban garden program to Shaw Community Center with the installation of fruit trees and teaching vegetable beds.

ABOUT THE CONSERVANCY

The Charleston Parks Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring the people of Charleston to connect with their parks and create stunning public places and a strong community. The Conservancy secures 90% of the funding required to maintain 26 parks across the city through private and corporate donations, while the City of Charleston covers 10% of costs. The Conservancy team provides year-round park care, with a focus on strategic seasonal plantings, major park revitalizations, and sustainable maintenance. In 2024 alone, the organization planted over 46,000 plants and 1,000 trees, donated two tons of fresh produce and 1,200 fresh flower bouquets grown in its parks and gardens, and advocated for the vital role of parks in urban life. Through 180 hours annually of free programming including popular events like the Teddy Bear Picnic, the Conservancy cultivates vibrant, welcoming green spaces that serve as hubs for recreation, relaxation, and community connection. Gulfport Marina includes dry boat storage, ship store, bathroom, public boat ramp, parking, fueling stations, lighted range markers and guest docking facility.

Gulfport and Gulfport Municipal Marina, A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR, located in the heart of downtown Gulfport, are slowly recovering from Helene and Milton. Cruisers Net is proud of how the city handled the two storms and we are glad to know things are improving. The marina and harbor, found on the northern shores of Boca Ciega Bay, are easily accessible from the Western Florida ICW just north of Tampa Bay.

Gulfport Community Update: November 10 – 16, 2024

On Wednesday morning, the Gulfport Public Works Department brought a Recycling Truck to the Tot Time/VPK Program for an engaging presentation. The Public Works Crew Leader introduced the preschoolers to the truck’s many levers and buttons, showing how each one helps the recycling truck operate. Eight excited children, along with their two teachers, enjoyed this hands-on learning experience.

2024 Gulfport Yacht Club Series Regattas

Saturday, November 16th | 1 – 6:30 p.m.

Gulfport Yacht Club, 4638 Del Rio Way S.

Club races (weather permitting) on the First and Third Saturday of the month on Boca Ciega Bay. Any DP-N rated boat up to 25 feet is welcome and we have a strong beach multihull presence (A-cat, Formula 18, Formula 16, Hobie 16, Weta etc.).

Registration: Simply show up on a race day and sign in. Guests wishing to race their boats will pay $10.00 per boat and must have proof of liability insurance. After racing we hang out enjoying conversations and food at our club house.
