I leave my boat at Whittaker Point marina for several weeks which is in the aforementioned creek. Easy in if one stays in the channel. I had a problem with my windlass and the folks at Sailcraft shipyard (right across the creek)sent over a mechanic who removed the broken unit and repaired. Continuing north in a week.

We kept our boat at Whittaker Point Marina this summer. It is a pretty sparkling facility, meaning new. Nice fixed docks in great condition, beautifully clean and comfortable clubhouse, nice pool. Ashley the dock master really looks out for your boat and he called a time or two when the wind got rough and toyed with our ailing bimini. It is close to Oriental, but remote enough to be super peaceful. The frogs chirping a bit at night is the only sound you’ll hear.

Take heed on the markers though, it goes from 6+ feet to knee deep in a hurry if you drift outside the markers. Saw about a 24 foot shoal keel sailboat get stranded once, and was only 1/2 an oar deep when I was fiddling in the dinghy on the other side of them.

The Whittaker Point Marina just off the ICW is wonderful. They have a newly placed wave attenuator that really makes a huge difference in the calmness of the marina. The club house, pool, bathrooms and showers, etc. are lovely as are the natural surroundings. The dock master and mistress are very accommodating and now offer a courtesy car for short trips to the grocery or even the New Bern Airport. It is a 20 minute bike ride to the village and all that it has to offer. There is ample space for several big catamarans.

[The Whittake Creek entrance channel] hasn’t been dredged but the USCG has added some temporary green buoys to keep folks in the deep part of the channel. I go in and out all the time and typically see more than 6 feet. There is a front range when you are entering the channel and it keeps you in good water. The west side (or green side) of the channel is shoaling in and folks need to stay to the red side, but there is plenty of water. We have boats with 6 ft. draft in the marina all of the time. So to say it is 5.5 ft. controlling draft is misleading.
        Thanks, Ashley

        Subject: Whittaker Pointe Marina
Cruising News: There is fairly new marina in Oriental that is not listed on this Cruisers Net. Whittaker Pointe Marina is located at the entrance to Whittaker Creek at green marker #5 (mile 181). It is a beautiful marina in a beautiful location. The docks, club house and swimming pool are all in excellent condition and the view from the clubhouse is gorgeous. Although is is located a good distance from town by dinghy, there is a courtesy van available for transient use, making it easy to reprovision at the grocery and West Marine (which are quite a walk from the downtown marinas). The van is also available for a trip out to dinner at the many wonderful restaurants in Oriental. Ashley and Carol Erwin are the dockmasters and, having been a cruiser themselves, are always willing to help in any way. If there is no answer on Channel 16, transients are welcome to tie up to the t-dock and call Ashley on his cell phone 252-675-2554. For information in advance, call either 252-249-1750 (office) or 252-675-2554 (cell). It is a wonderful place to stay overnight or for a week or longer.
