Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway – Southern Branch Elizabth River –

Hwy 13 -‘Gilmerton’ Bridge – Notification of Maintenance Deviations

Mariners are advised that in order to facilitate maintenance, the Gilmerton (US13/460) Bridge, across the Elizabeth River Southern Branch, Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, mile 5.8, at Chesapeake, VA will be maintained in the closed-to-navigation position for two maintenance periods in the coming weeks.

The bridge will be maintained in the closed-to-navigation position next Monday December 1, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. December 2, 2025 and then from 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday December 2, 2025 until 6:30 a.m. on December 3, 2025. 

The following week, starting Monday December 8, 2025 and concluding on Friday December 12th, 2025, the bridge will be maintained in the closed-to-navigation position from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The bridge will open on signal for all vessels at 8:30 a.m. and again 3:30 p.m.  Between these hours the drawbridge will not be able to open for emergencies. 

At all other times, the drawbridge will operate in accordance with the operating regulations set out in Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations Part 117.997(c).  The vertical clearance of the bridge in the closed-to-navigation position is 35 feet at mean high tide. Vessels able to pass through the bridge in the closed position may do so at any time. Mariners should adjust their transit accordingly and use caution when transiting the area.
