      The Lake Norman Sail & Power Squadron will be offering two “advanced courses” for boaters seeking more in-depth education on boating related topics. Specific dates, times and venues are yet to be determined. The purpose of this notice is to collect names and contact information of those interested in either class and then set schedules to best accommodate those interested. A synopsis of each class follows:

      1. SEAMANSHIP: Will be offered after Labor Day 2017 and conclude before Thanksgiving

      Build boating confidence and competence for safe and fun on-the-water adventures.  Seamanship provides a foundation of knowledge and skills in boat handling and manoeuvring, boat operation, skipper’s responsibilities, and boating techniques that will advance your boating enjoyment.

       

      What’s included? For both sail and power boats, Seamanship covers a wide range of topics, including:

      • Types of boats and how they behave on the water
      • Anchoring in various conditions
      • Docking and line handling
      • Close quarter manoeuvring
      • Rules of the road
      • Communication with other boats
      • How to respond to various emergencies
      • Marlinespike/basic knots
      • And other interesting topics

      This course is normally completed in 8 two-hour sessions: six sessions of study, one session of review and one session for the exam. Estimated cost is $55 for members and $75 for non-members.

      1. MARINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS: Will be offered in the winter of 2018 (starts in January)

      Learn the ins and outs of your boat’s electrical systems.  Gain the confidence to tackle direct current, shore power and communications installations.  Ensure the safety and reliability of your vessel.

       

      What’s Included?

      • Boat electrical wiring practices
      • Direct Current (DC) power
      • Alternating Current (AC) power
      • Galvanic and stray current corrosion
      • Lightning protection
      • Troubleshooting electrical problems
      • How to use a multi-meter
      • How to solder and crimp
      • How to read electrical wiring diagrams

      This course is usually completed in nine two-hour sessions, followed by an exam. Estimated cost is $45 for members and $65 for non-members.
