    • Severe Shoaling, AICW Statute Mile 360.5, 9/8/2016

This area of shoaling is at the northern end of an already narrow channel between the NC/SC state line and Socastee Bridge. This shoaling will be a problem for deep draft vessels. Mid to high tide is recommended.

SOUTH CAROLINA – MYRTLE GROVE SOUND AND CAPE FEAR RIVER TO CASINO CREEK – LITTLE RIVER-WINYAH BAY: Severe Shoal and Temporary Buoy 22A Established.
Severe shoaling has been reported in the vicinity of Little River-Winyah Bay Daybeacon 22A (LLNR 33710.5 [33°44.5204N / 078°51.9515W, 33.742006 / -78.865859]) and Daybeacon 25 (LLNR 33735 [33°43.9158N / 078°53.2605W, 33.731930 / -78.887675]). A temporary Buoy 22A has been set in approximate position 33-44.5094N/078-51.9702W (33°44.5094N / 078°51.9702W, 33.741823 / -78.866170) . Little River-Winyah Bay Daybeacon 22A has been temporarily changed from a non-lateral aid to an NW on pile (diamond shape, white day boards with an orange reflective boarder). The approximate width of the channel from the pier on the east side to TEMP Buoy 22A on the west side is roughly 60ft. The pier on the east side is not lit and the width of the channel with the extreme shoaling on the west side poses a serious hazard to navigation. Mariners are advised to use extreme caution while transiting the area. Chart 11502, 11504 LNM 36/16

    • Groundings at AICW/Shallotte Inlet Intersection, Problem Stretch Statute Mile 330, 8/21/2016

With two recent groundings at this AICW Problem Stretch, we are upgrading these reports to a Nav Alert. Until dredging is done, slow speed and mid to high tide is recommended for this intersection. Thank you Michael and Ken for sharing these incidents and SSECN is glad neither of you sustained damage in the grounding, other than your pride!

Coming south 16Aug16 at +1′ above low. Draw 4′. At idle speed ran hard aground in mid-channel just past green buoy. C-Map charting [updated Sep15] shows channel angles sharply toward red at the green buoy — should have followed its suggestion. My mistake was to “stay mid-channel.” The bottom raised VERY quickly, almost a wall. After backing off, saw above 10′ in area on line between reds.
      Michael Loy

We were also headed south through this stretch on August 14. We draw 3 feet. Just past the green we also ran hard aground. We were in the channel toward the red side as recommended, but not quite on the line between the two reds. There was no warning on the depth meter before it was too late. We were able to get off eventually using bow and stern thrusters and some wakes from passing small boats. We didn’t incur damage except to our equanimity.
      Captain Ken Hirsch

Keeping in mind that rapid changes in shoals at inlet intersections is not unusual, RodC offers this January 2016 ACOE survey:

      http://saw-nav.usace.army.mil/AIWW/CFRLR/T_19-20/Tangent_19-20.pdf

Latest ACOE survey for the area – clearly shows the traditional channel is ~100% shoaled to between 2 and 4ft MLLW. What channel there is (or was as of 1-16-2016) is just to the outside on the RED side of the marks.

The USACE advice I received from their boat’s Captain for both Lockwoods Folly and Shallotte’s at the ICW crossings was to proceed at about 30 feet off the reds. I’ve seen no less than 11 – 12 feet at low tide following that advice. Following your chartplotter there is a recipe for a grounding.

The middle part of the pass seems to have been dredged during the Honeymoon Island beach renourishment project. They finally took sand from a place that made sense (the channel). You should still read the color of the water and favor the south side of the channel. I am drawing a little over 4' and can get in and out on a 0 low tide, but will not try a negative. Best to run the pass slow on a sunny day, read the color changes, hit waypoints progressively and build a route for night time use should you need it. You CANNOT trust the markers throughout the entire pass, beginning to end. On the inshore side of the pass, the red markers (R8 & R10) can lead you to low water if you are too close to them. All things considered, it is deeper now since they have dredged the pass. I will try to provide updates as I have the opportunity. Safe cruising.

    • Hazards of North Carolina Coastal Inlets, 4/27/2016

This Special Notice was issued last year, /148804, and the latest issue serves to urge NC boaters to use extreme caution in the inlets listed below. Shoaling in the inlets may well mean shoaling in the intersection of the inlet with the Waterway. Pay particular attention to the NC Problem Stretches that involve these inlets: Bogue, Browns, New River, Carolina Beach, Lockwoods and Shalotte. Details of these Problem Stretches are found in the links below.

NC – HAZARDS OF NORTH CAROLINA COASTAL INLETS
This notice is to notify mariners about accessing hazardous inlets, to heighten public awareness about the hazards that exist in and around the inlets, and to provide the mariner with available information. Mariners are advised that shoaling conditions exist at following North Carolina coastal inlets:
      Oregon Inlet
      Hatteras Inlet
      Ocracoke Inlet
      Barden Inlet
      Beaufort Inlet
      Bogue Inlet
      New River Inlet
      Topsail Inlet
      Masonboro Inlet
      Carolina Beach Inlet
      Lockwoods Folly Inlet
      Shallotte Inlet
Shoaling conditions increase the potential for groundings. These inlets are subject to continual and sometimes rapid environmental changes. Mariners are highly encouraged to obtain the most recent U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington, North Carolina District hydrographic survey information, centerline waypoints and controlling depth at: http://www.saw.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation/HydrographicSurveys.aspx
Mariners should use caution when navigating in these areas and passage through the inlets is not recommended without local knowledge of the area. The aids to navigation in these inlets may not be charted and may not be marking best water due to continually shifting shoals. Consult Local Notice to Mariners, 5th Coast Guard District for the latest positions and status of aids to navigation: http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=lnmDistrict®ion=5

Sarasota New Pass and Big Pass Update
        March 22, 2018
        Report from Sarasota Herald-Tribune:

SARASOTA COUNTY — State and local officials are warning boaters to use the Big Pass and New Pass channels at their own risk after conditions at both passes became too hazardous to continue marking safe navigation routes.
Sarasota County in recent weeks removed five navigation markers from the Gulf of Mexico side of Big Pass because they no longer indicated a good route after some parts of the channel became shallow and dangerous to navigate, officials said. The county’s move comes a year after the USCG removed all channel markers in New Pass after that channel experienced unsafe shoaling, or hazardous shallowing in some parts of the pass.
