    • More on Peck Lake Anchorage, AICW Statute Mile 992

       The Peck Lake Anchorage immediately off the AICW’s path, south of the Waterway’s intersection with the St. Lucie Inlet, on the easterly waters of Peck Lake, east-southeast of marker #19. Our thanks to Captains Healy and Horowitz for these reports.

      As of 11/14/2013, Peck Lake is ABSOLUTELY UNUSABLE by pleasure craft for anchorage. There is dredging equipment on station in Peck Lake, apparently related to dredging at the St. Lucie Inlet. The construction company has placed a network of stakes completely throughout Peck Lake, making it unusable by anything other than kayaks and canoes. It seems completely unnecessary to confiscate all that space, but they did it.

      We passed Peck Lake SM 992 this morning, 17 Nov., and it appears that this is no longer a viable anchorage. Secured just east of the main ICW channel, we observed one tug, two barges, a dredge or pump barge, a dormitory barge, a floating, lighted pipeline extending from the dredge to the shore, and the lagoon populated with many white stakes. There were no other vessels there. This might be a staging area for the dredging of St. Lucie inlet.

      I am attaching a note from s/v Calypso, Captain Jeff and Admirable Wendy. There has been a lot of discussion about available anchorage in Peck Lake, FL, and some say you could “maybe” anchor 2 or 3 boats north of the huge barge, Capt. Jeff says he would not recommend it to any of us. For what it’s worth….

      Most of the lake has PVC stakes which make it look like it has been surveyed. There is also a large floating pipeline from the barge to shore. From what it looks like they are bringing in barges full of muck for St. Lucie Inlet and then pumping it shore side. Maybe beach re-nourishment?

    • Changes in Opening Schedules at Three West Palm Beach Bridges AICW Statute Miles 1021.8 – 1024.7

      West Palm Beach Bridges - Click for Chartview

      Flagler Memorial Bridge, with a closed vertical clearance of 17ft, crosses the Waterway and Lake Worth at Statute Mile 1021, south of unlighted daybeacon #10. The former openings were twice hourly.
      Royal Park Bridge, with a closed vertical clearance of 20ft, crosses the Waterway at Statute Mile 1022.5, south of unlighted daybeacon #14. The former openings were on the hour and half-hour.
      Southern Boulevard – S.R. 700 Bridge, with a closed vertical clearance of 14ft, crosses the Waterway and southern Lake Worth at Statute Mile 1025, south of unlighted daybeacon #20.

      Flagler Bridge (StM 1021.8):
      As of early November, 2013, bridge restrictions have changed. WORSE! MUCH WORSE! The bridge now opens hourly at the top of the hour. That’s it. Massive construction involving foundation rehabilitation is taking place at this bridge. Much heavy construction equipment is on scene. Saturday, 11/16/2013, the span was continuously open. Not sure if that’s the case all the time. Plan very carefully in this area!

      Royal Park Bridge (StM 1022.6):
      As of early November, 2013, bridge restrictions have changed. Hopefully temporary. WORSE! The bridge now opens hourly on the quarter hour. Weekdays, it skips the morning opening at 08h15 and the evening opening at 16h15. This works well for Southbound traffic, but not at all well for Northbound traffic. That’s it.

      Southern Boulevard Bridge (1024.7):
      As of early November, 2013, bridge restrictions have changed. The bridge now opens twice hourly on the hour and half-hour.

      The North Lake Worth anchorage dinghy landing (just a small beach north of Little Lake Worth bridge) was the cause of much discussion in August of 2012 (see /?p=93324). Captain Kat is asking for advice from anyone who might have used the landing recently.

      Hi everyone,
      What is the current status of this dinghy landing? We will be heading that way soon and it is a very important spot for last minute stores. What if anything is the alternative?

      As of Nov. 17th, 2013, the beach in the creek which flows into the North end of North Lake Worth anchorage, remains the same as it has been, a reasonably good dinghy landing. Probably best to lock your dinghy. Publix close by and a BIG West Marine just 1 block South of PGA Blvd (moved from old location North of PGA Blvd).

      Anchored here now. Been gusting to 30 plus NE most of the night and lots of freighters coming in and out. I’d prefer we anchored south more further from the inlet but we found a spot with 13′ and liked it. Holding well with 85 or so feet of chain out but bouncy (which is why I’m writing this at 12:44 but that’s just me. Further south about 20 vessels. Near us 5 and 3 appear to be locals. We dingied to Loggerhead Marina ‘“ just beyond Blue Heron bridge and bought drinks and used their dock to walk 2 mins to Publix. It was a wet dinghy over but saved us from going to Riviera Marina, paying $10 and walking a mile to Publix. Moving to a more protected area today or just more south.

      Be wary of in the main Lake Worth anchorage when you have strong S or N wind, which will set up wind-against-tide. I have dragged (and watched others drag) after a day or two of piouretting around the anchor in such conditions. What happens is that the motion wraps a chain ball around the anchor’“any kind of anchor’“and then off you go. This is the only anchorage where I routinely anchor bow-and-stern for exactly that reason.

      This particular excerpt concerns JIB Yacht Club. This facility is really more of a marina than a club, and flanks the eastern shores of the AICW, immediately north of Jupiter Inlet.

      We stayed at JIB Yacht Club Marina in Jupiter right off the ICW, mile marker 1004.2. Water depths were about 6 feet along side the fixed docks. The deck hands were good and the baths very clean. There is no restaurant within walking distances however. Turning around to depart within the marina is tight; turning around a boat much larger than 46 would be VERY tight.

      North Palm Beach Waterway Anchorage is on the waters of the first charted basin on the western banks of this alternate waterway which cuts off to the southwest of the ICW, northwest of the North Palm Beach/Parker Bridge.

      Anchored there on 12/11/12. First time there. Nice homes surrounding anchorage. Weather radar showed lots of storms in the area. Put out 140′ of chain. Had several hours of heavy ts, wind from all directions and 10’³ of rain. Boat swung 360 degrees several times and anchor held fine. Anchorage is relatively small, maybe two boats. Rate this one a good three.

      North Palm Beach MarinaNorth Palm Beach Marina – A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! – lies on the southwestern banks of the ICW shortly after you pass under the restricted North Palm Beach/Parker bridge.
      Last weekend, we received a report from Captain Young that she had been overcharged for overnight dockage at North Palm Beach Marina. We passed these comments along to the management here, and within 24 hours, they were in touch with Captain Claudia, and a refund had been issued. Now, that’s what I call GOOD customer service.
      Mistakes can and do happen to all of us (I made a mistake just last year). The real mark of a quality operation is how well and how swiftly oversights are handled when they do happen. North Palm Beach Marina has passed that test with proverbial flying colors in our book!

      Spent the night on 3/13/13. Good place to stop for transients. They had some computer issues and the final bill turned out to be wrong. We were slightly overcharged. Chris, the marina manager got in touch with us the day after and refunded the difference. We will be back.

    • Anchoring on the Eastern Shore Lake Worth Channel (Palm Beach, near St. M. 1018.5)

       Study chart 11472, and look at the waters south of Lake Worth Inlet. You will quickly spot a marked channel which parallels the eastern shore of Lake Worth. It is actually possible, for those piloting vessels that draw 4 feet or less, to follow this channel several miles to the south and eventually rejoin the AICW. Not that we are recommending that for first timers, but many local captains take this route day in and day out.
      In regards to anchoring on these waters, in our SSECN Eastern Florida Anchorage Directory we suggest dropping the hook near the northern head of this side channel, east-southeast of marker #2. The Lucas duo (see below) chose to continue south on the eastern Lake Worth channel and anchor, well south of marker #6 and east of the northernmost of the two charted, rectangular “Spoil Areas.”
      Sounds like in spite of the passing traffic, they had an enjoyable evening!

      We are rookies at this, use this very helpful site, and it is nice to be able to contribute. We arrived for the first time in Lake Worth yesterday, planning to use this anchorage but were unprepared for the crowding we encountered! The detail chart (11472_7) helped us cruise slowly south past red markers 2,4 and 6 to the open area between cable markings and south of all the mooring fields. We anchored east of the first of two large rectangular spoil area in 17 ft of water, hoping that if we swung we’d stay clear. To our surprise, several large (meaning 100+ ft) yachts passed us, went near or over the spoil areas on their approach to the huge marina east of our position. After dark a large dinner cruiser circled around the spoil area before heading south in the ICW. Boats continued to use the channel between us and the eastern shore well into darkness, but everyone was at idle speed. We left our radio on, but no one told us to move and we spent a peaceful night.
      Again, thank you! Our experience has been made much better with this site; the information and updates have been essential to keeping us from making serious mistakes along the way on that is our “shakedown cruise”.

      Great anchoring information and correct is so far as it goes.
      Please be advised that the eastern channel discussed ends just north of the Flagler Bridge, (the first on the ICW south of Lake Worth Inlet) south of the marina discussed (Sailfish Club on Palm Beach). This channel becomes very shoal (less than 1 foot MLW).
      If you choose to utilize this channel for a quiet, calm anchorage, and want to continue further south on the ICW, you may need to backtrack further north before you can cross the lake westbound to reconnect with the ICW (which runs down the west side of the ICW north of the Flagler Bridge) without grounding in the middle of the lake.

      There are a LOT of boats anchored all over this general area. And the mega yachts do use that eastern channel. We ran down this channel from the inlet past marker 6 and saw depths over 20′. The anchorage had plenty of space for us with over 8′ of depth. A dredging operation was setting up as we left last Tuesday. one report was they were dredging that channel to accommodate the megayachts. Not sure if that is accurate but there is some major dredging setting up in the area. The space close to the inlet was very crowded so having all the extra space is great. Shore access at Rivera Beach marina might be charged $20, no open wifi.

       Capt. Moran is an experienced cruiser who is wise enough to seek local knowledge, even in an area formerly visited. Let us hear from you if you have an answer for Capt. Moran.
      Over the years, we have found that the best entry point from the AICW, into the anchorage seems to move. So, it would be invaluable if several of you who have visited here recently shared where you found the best water.

      I’ve been here several times, but it would be most helpful to know the exact entry point off the ICW to get into this anchorage. I’ve always depended on the kindness of those in this anchorage before me to guide me in due to the challenge of finding the ‘˜sweet spot’ to get over that bar’¦and passed it by on those occasions when some braver soul had not already ‘˜done the deed’ before me. Hints anyone?

      We are currently anchored in Peck Lake with winds up to 20 knots and good holding. The beach is really nice but cruiser’s with pets should know no dogs allowed. There are a lot of no seeums even with the wind at dusk and dawn.

      And, as usual, the cruising community has responded magnificently, with the generous advice below:

      Leave ICW immediately south of G19. Head toward weather station on timber structure just off beach. As you get in to deeper water, head north again until water begins to shallow. Circle back to the south and anchor. There is lots of room, and holding is good. No problem with four foot draft.
      Dogs ARE allowed on the ICW side of the park. They are not allowed east of the dune line. I contacted the park superintendent, and he confirmed this in an email to me. We were there with our dog on January 11, 2013

      Hi Claiborne,
      I must tell you about our first visit to Peck Lake several years ago.
      We had just purchased our first trawler, a second hand Mainship 390 in Fort Lauradale, it had come equipped with an Avon dingy and small outboard engine. So I dropped the hook for the first time at Peck Lake. I got the deflated dingy out of the engine compartment, inflated it and attached it to the swim platform, then I attached the outboard which was mounted up on the fly bridge, connected the fuel tank, with questionable fuel, primed it, but it wouldn’t go. After I had cleaned the fuel bowl and spark plug to no avail, Linda got the manual out. I might say by this time the dogs needed a potty break on the shore, they were all getting a little impatient with me. I promised we would stay in a marina the next day. I had always been familiar with Johnson and Evenrude engines, but this was one with the safety key neatly attached on a short chain to the engine and I had overlooked plugging it in. Naturally she pointed this out to me and the engine started immediately. We stayed at Peck Lake for three days and had a wonderful time playing with the dogs on the Atlantic side of the strip of land not approachable by land.
      Great memories and probably the best anchorage on the ICW.

      From just south of marker 19 go directly toward the tide station ( platform). Anchorage is good on both sides of that line. Don’t go more than 150 yards to the south of that line. Depths run 6 to 8 feet.

    • Peck Lake Anchorage (Statute Mile 992)

       I can tell you from extensive, personal experience, Peck Lake Anchorage is wonderful, IF you can clear the shallow bar that lies between the AICW channel and the deeper waters to the east. The best spot to transit the bar varies, but we have held as much as 6 feet MLW, and at other times, these soundings have shrunk to 4 feet at low tide.
      Once you get the hook down, dinghy ashore and walk the short distance to the totally unspoiled beach. This is a wonderful place to while away a warm, lazy afternoon!!!!

      5 miles or so south of the St.Lucie inlet the ICW widens to a decent anchorage. It is undeveloped except for a dinghy dock. 100 yds beyond the dock is a very nice beach ( Jonathan Dickenson State Park)

    • Singer Island Anchorage (Statute Mile 1017)

      The anchorage described by Captain Richter below lies east of the AICW, just north of the high-rise Blue Heron Blvd. bridge. If it were not for the sunken derelicts and “live aboard hulks” which litter these waters, this spot would undoubtedly be one of the most popular anchorages in Southeastern Florida. As it is, cautious skippers can still find a place to drop the hook amid the other vessels here (floating and otherwise).
      Once the hook is down, it a quick dinghy trip south of Foster Park. You can land the dink here at the public launching ramps, and take your pet ashore to stretch their legs.

      Another easy beach-stop anchorage is Singer Island, just north of the Blue Heron Blvd 65′ bridge in Riveria Beach, a few miles north of West Palm Beach. Usually 6-12 local boats anchored just off Phil Foster Park. 3 block walk to a very nice ocean beach, or try the ICW beach under the bridge in the park.

      North Lake Worth has long been a popular anchorage, due in no small part to a small beach north of Little Lake Worth Bridge that serves as a dinghy landing. The dinghy landing was off-limits during recent construction, but it is now open.

      I have spent three weeks in a row anchored in North Lake Worth. No one will fine you or hassle you in the anchorage unless possibly you anchor to the West of the White buoy at the far end past Old Port Cove Marina, which marks the Boundary of the county and city I believe. There was a huge Power Cat 80 ft at least anchored there in November and still there in March when we came through one year. Enjoy this super anchorage.

    • Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Now Readily Available in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties, Florida

      Within ten minutes of receiving the important message below from Captain Hyde, the Salty Southeast Cruisers’ Net was on the telephone with Wise Gas, Inc. to determine their area of service. That’s one of the advantages of being a “non-wicki,” professionally moderated web site. Anyway, what we discovered is a potential boon for cruisers in southeastern Florida. More on that in just a second.
      So, why is a ready source of CNG such big news for the cruising community? Quite simply, CNG is a superior fuel for all on-board cooking and heating purposes, as compared to propane/LPG. As many of you already know, LPG/Propane is heavier than air and, should there be a leak, can accumulate in bilges or a low place in a boat, leading to a potentially explosive situation. Conversely, CNG is lighter than air, and tends to naturally disperse.
      The problem is, as we so clearly learned while formulating the SSECN’s LPG Availability Directories, that CNG is hard to obtain. Quite simply, there are very few dealers to which cruisers have easy access where their CNG tanks can be refilled.
      Back to Wise Gas, Inc. Our telephone call revealed that this company will pick up, refill and deliver back to your vessel, CNG tanks from the “tri-county area” of southeastern Florida, which is comprised of Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties. Additionally, WITH ADVANCE ARRANGEMENTS, sometimes the same procedure can be undertaken along the west coast of Florida, particularly in the Tampa Bay region.
      So, while it’s still not a perfect solution, nor one so broad ranging as we would like, at least now from North Palm Beach to Miami, cruisers can be sure of having a source to refill CNG tanks. It’s a start!

      On your recent visit to Punta Gorda, Florida I mentioned to you that if I was ever able to locate a source of CNG for those using the gas onboard their boats, I would let you know. I have finally found a source. Wise Gas, Inc., 1058 Bluewood Terrace, Weston, FL 33327 is source of CNG for vessels and vehicles in south Florida. Its website advises the following:

      `At present time, Wise Gas, Inc. is offering CNG tank refills to marine boaters in the South Florida area only. We do anticipate expanding this service in terms of geography and service options in the future. Call Wise Gas, Inc. in advance at (954)-636-4291 to coordinate a CNG refill. A member of our team will meet you, pick up your current, approved cylinder in good condition and refill it for you and deliver it back to you.’
      The cost of this service varies based on cylinder size and location. Call in advance to schedule your refilling needs.

      I recently met with a Wise Gas representative who was in Punta Gorda making deliveries on the west coast and exchanged my empty tank for a full one. It was a smooth and convenient process. The cost was $40.

        Unfortunately, it seems this is a dead end. I have called the number above and getting no answer and a voicemail box that is full. I feel like I’m the only one that has CNG on my boat. No one seems to know where or how to get these refilled. If anyone has any updated information about this, please let me know.. Thanks Jeff Sawyer

    • Report from Peck Lake Anchorage, AICW Statute Mile 992

      Peck Lake anchorage will be discovered east of the AICW Channel, east-southeast of flashing daybeacon #19. There has always been a shallow water bar between the Wateway, and deeper depths in the anchorage itself. Captain MacInnis was smart to enter this haven at high tide, and presumably, he left under the same conditions.
      The comment about the adjacent beach being pet unfriendly is news to us. Pet owners take note!

      We went in at near high tide just south of green 19. The previous comments were correct in how to get in. There is a lot of shallow water in there ‘“ towboat US pulled out two while we were there, so go slow, and watch the tides. We travel with our dog, and I just want to point out that the ocean beach is off limits to pets, but I was able to take him to shore on the lake side.

      Yes, indeed, Old Port Cove Marina is an excellent facility, or you can choose to anchor nearby on northern Lake Worth (follow link below for more info).

      Anchorage is perfect & free! Lots of room and good holding.
      The marina is 100% all amenities if you like that sort of thing. Shopping is 1 city block from the North end of Old Port Cove anchorage with Groceries and CVS as well as the infamos Carmines with the finest of wines,cheeese,sea food of all kinds and meats & fish of the finest quality anywhere. Shopping for the ladies as well. Anchor or Marina it does not get any better.

      We stopped for a night at Old Port Cove Marina. It was the least expensive marina in the area. We wanted a pump out the morning we left, but the marina was so busy launching small powerboats from their boatel service they told us to go elsewhere. Also, if you dock there, have good fenders ready to protect from the concrete finger piers.

    • Good Night on Peck Lake Anchorage, AICW Statute Mile 992

      This anchorage is on the easterly waters of Peck Lake, east-southeast of flashing daybeacon #19.

      We anchored at Peck Lake 5/3/11. We entered just south of Green 19 and saw nothing less than 13 feet. Head straight to the sign on the shore. We then anchored in 9 feet. Good holding. No bugs and no wind. It can be bouncy from the ICW. A great spot from which to head either north towards Vero or south to West Palm.
