Today, as we gather to commemorate Memorial Day, let us take a moment to delve into the untold origins and evolution of this cherished holiday. In a captivating article by Richard Gardiner, we embark on a journey through the forgotten history that shaped Memorial Day into the symbol of unity and remembrance it is today. From acts of generosity and reconciliation after the Civil War to its profound significance as a day of honoring sacrifices, this article, originally published on The Conversation, sheds light on the remarkable story behind Memorial Day. Join us in reflecting on the profound meaning behind this commemorative day and gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices of those who have served our nation.
The Forgotten History of Memorial Day
Memorial Day was born out of generous gestures after the Civil War: Southerners decorated graves of Confederate soldiers as well as those of former Union enemies.
Preparing to decorate graves, May 1899. Library of Congress
In the years following the bitter Civil War, a former Union general took a holiday originated by former Confederates and helped spread it across the entire country.
The holiday was Memorial Day, an annual commemoration was born in the former Confederate States in 1866 and adopted by the United States in 1868. It is a holiday in which the nation honors its military dead.
Gen. John A. Logan, who headed the largest Union veterans’ fraternity at that time, the Grand Army of the Republic, is usually credited as being the originator of the holiday.
Yet when General Logan established the holiday, he acknowledged its genesis among the Union’s former enemies, saying, “It was not too late for the Union men of the nation to follow the example of the people of the South.”
I’m a scholar who has written – with co-author Daniel Bellware – a history of Memorial Day. Cities and towns across America have for more than a century claimed to be the holiday’s birthplace, but we have sifted through the myths and half-truths and uncovered the authentic story of how this holiday came into being.
Generous acts bore fruit
During 1866, the first year of this annual observance in the South, a feature of the holiday emerged that made awareness, admiration and eventually imitation of it spread quickly to the North.
During the inaugural Memorial Day observances which were conceived in Columbus, Georgia, many Southern participants – especially women – decorated graves of Confederate soldiers as well as, unexpectedly, those of their former enemies who fought for the Union.

Shortly after those first Memorial Day observances all across the South, newspaper coverage in the North was highly favorable to the ex-Confederates.
“The action of the ladies on this occasion, in burying whatever animosities or ill-feeling may have been engendered in the late war towards those who fought against them, is worthy of all praise and commendation,” wrote one paper.
On May 9, 1866, the Cleveland Daily Leader lauded the Southern women during their first Memorial Day.
“The act was as beautiful as it was unselfish, and will be appreciated in the North.”
The New York Commercial Advertiser, recognizing the magnanimous deeds of the women of Columbus, Georgia, echoed the sentiment. “Let this incident, touching and beautiful as it is, impart to our Washington authorities a lesson in conciliation.”
Power of a poem
To be sure, this sentiment was not unanimous. There were many in both parts of the U.S. who had no interest in conciliation.
But as a result of one of these news reports, Francis Miles Finch, a Northern judge, academic and poet, wrote a poem titled “The Blue and the Gray.” Finch’s poem quickly became part of the American literary canon. He explained what inspired him to write it:
“It struck me that the South was holding out a friendly hand, and that it was our duty, not only as conquerors, but as men and their fellow citizens of the nation, to grasp it.”
Finch’s poem seemed to extend a full pardon to the South: “They banish our anger forever when they laurel the graves of our dead” was one of the lines.
Not just poems: Sheet music written to commemorate Memorial Day in 1870. Library of Congress
Almost immediately, the poem circulated across America in books, magazines and newspapers. By the end of the 19th century, school children everywhere were required to memorize Finch’s poem. The ubiquitous publication of Finch’s rhyme meant that by the end of 1867, the southern Memorial Day holiday was a familiar phenomenon throughout the entire, and recently reunited, country.
General Logan was aware of the forgiving sentiments of people like Finch. When Logan’s order establishing Memorial Day was published in various newspapers in May 1868, Finch’s poem was sometimes appended to the order.
‘The blue and the grey’
It was not long before Northerners decided that they would not only adopt the Southern custom of Memorial Day, but also the Southern custom of “burying the hatchet.” A group of Union veterans explained their intentions in a letter to the Philadelphia Evening Telegraph on May 28, 1869:
“Wishing to bury forever the harsh feelings engendered by the war, Post 19 has decided not to pass by the graves of the Confederates sleeping in our lines, but divide each year between the blue and the grey the first floral offerings of a common country. We have no powerless foes. Post 19 thinks of the Southern dead only as brave men.”
Other reports of reciprocal magnanimity circulated in the North, including the gesture of a 10-year-old who made a wreath of flowers and sent it to the overseer of the holiday, Colonel Leaming, in Lafayette, Indiana, with the following note attached, published in The New Hampshire Patriot on July 15, 1868:
“Will you please put this wreath upon some rebel soldier’s grave? My dear papa is buried at Andersonville, (Georgia) and perhaps some little girl will be kind enough to put a few flowers upon his grave.”
President Abraham Lincoln’s wish that there be “malice toward none” and “charity for all” was visible in the magnanimous actions of participants on both sides, who extended an olive branch during the Memorial Day observances in those first three years.
Although not known by many today, the early evolution of the Memorial Day holiday was a manifestation of Lincoln’s hope for reconciliation between North and South.

Greeting from the Florida Keys!
The Keys will open to visitors on June 1, 2020. Hotels and vacation rentals will be limited to 50% occupancy for the immediate future. At Key Lime Sailing Club, we want you here as much as you want to be here, so we’ve been working hard to become the number one place you want to visit.
Caring for you is our priority. That’s why we have rolled out enhanced cleaning practices for our cottages, boats, common spaces, and amenities.
Prior to cottage check in and boat assignment, we are giving every cottage and every boat a thorough cleaning with an EPA – approved disinfectant. And every morning, we are cleaning high touch common areas with the same disinfectant.
We have implemented a reservation process in which each cottage will have at least one vacant day between check-out and check-in to allow ample time for our enhanced cleaning procedures. For shared amenities, such as kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, life jackets, and more, we are disinfecting daily and providing sanitizing wipe stations for extra protection for you, our guests. Also, we’ve added hospital grade ionizing hepa-filters to each cottage that will remove 99.97% of airborne particles prior to check in and will be in the cottage for your usage during your entire stay. We are not just in compliance with the state and county mandated AHLA guidelines for enhanced cleaning practices, we exceed them.
The Florida Keys has been a pillar in keeping the virus at bay on our islands. These challenging times need solutions. We have them and they are now in place so you can feel safe visiting Key Lime Sailing Club. Your well-being is important and, as always, we’re here for you because you are why we do what we do.
During the lockdown, our team at Key Lime Sailing Club, the American Sailing Academy, and Morning Star Charters have been working on upgrading our cottages and boats. We have new floor coverings in the Keys, Mermaid, Manatee, and Dolphin cottages. The waterfront Sailfish cottage has had its sliding glass doors rehabbed for a much better view. It has been repainted and the floor covering was replaced as well. Our new catamaran, the Jeanneau Lagoon 37, “Unforgettable”, has been outfitted with new sails, new A/C units, new running rigging, and a lot of fine details in the interior. Our sailing snorkel adventure boat, Pirate’s Choice, has gotten a fresh coat of paint as well as mechanical and electrical upgrades. We’ve also gone over our fleet of Catalina 22’s taking care of details to put them in the best condition ever. Captains Laurel and Barnard, Dockmaster Neal, and Chris, our mechanic, have put a lot of TLC into our boats and it shows!

Mini Lobster Season
Next week, July 24th and 25th, will be Florida’s Mini Lobster Season!
Every July, the coastal areas of Florida are flooded with lobster hunters trying to get their share of this year’s bounty before the official lobster season kicks off.
There are two Florida Lobster Seasons, the 2-day mini season and the 8-month regular lobster season. The mini lobster season is always the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July. This year the mini season falls on July 24th and 25th. It begins at 12:01 am on Wednesday and ends at 12:00 midnight on Thursday.
The 8-month regular lobster season is always August 6 through March 31.
There is a specific way to catch a Florida lobster. To learn how, click here.
The American Sailing Association wants to energize everyone to start sailing by proclaiming this July the first ever “Learn to Sail” month.

Our thanks to Martin and Cindy Dahm for this report of another door closed to cruisers. Will anchoring in the Basin be next? See https://cruisersnet.net/690 for more comments from Martin Dahm. Tarpon Basin lies on the east side of the Waterway in the northeast corner of Buttonwood Sound.
My wife and I have been anchored at Tarpon Basin in Key Largo for the last 3 weeks and have been using the dinghy dock at the Murray E. Nelson government building without any issues. However yesterday we returned from running errands ashore and found the attached signs had been posted in the parking lot and in several places on the dock. As of April 15, 2019 no one will be able to tie up to the dock, trees or moor within 25 feet of the dock. Overnight parking will also be prohibited. I suppose you could still use the dock to drop someone off and then pick them up later, but no can leave their dinghy tied up anywhere on the property. Looks like Monroe County is rolling up the welcome mat for the cruising community. Best Regards, Martin and Cindy Dahm S/V Just One Dance Lagoon 380 S2
When I saw the first photo I wondered, how many cruisers have their car parked overnight at the county property? These are not cruisers, but they sure are ruining it for those of us who are.
Amen to that. No matter what part of the proverbial “public” you work with, there will always be some that will spoil the amenities offered, and all will suffer.
It isn't the water, it's the land; or more specifically, the abuse of the shoreside facility by unthoughtful live-aboards. The county center had become a garbage dump, bathrooms were constantly fouled, and the parking lot had become an ersatz boatyard. Efforts were made to educate users of these issues, but the problems continued to be exacerbated. When we cruisers take advantage of community resources, we have to be responsible, and most of us are. Yet, some who decide that they want to "live off the grid" have taken the generosity of the public too far and the results are that we all lose some of the benefits that we as taxpayers and visitors should enjoy. This should be a lesson to us all.

Coast Guard, partner agencies respond to vessel fire in Tarpon Basin near Key Largo

MIAMI — The Coast Guard, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded to a vessel fire Thursday in Tarpon Basin in Key Largo.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West Command Center received a call from Coast Guard Station Islamorada at approximately 6 a.m. stating they received a report of a vessel fire in Tarpon Basin. The station self-launched a 24-foot Special Purpose Craft—Law Enforcement boatcrew to respond.
The station SPC—LE crew arrived on scene and assisted in putting out the fire on a 50-foot houseboat using the wash from their propellers.
“Once on scene we got together with our partner agencies to help establish a safety zone to keep other vessel traffic out of harms way,” said Petty Officer 1st Class John Fleming, operations petty officer, Station Islamorada. “We also monitored the fire due to the close proximity to the mangroves and it’s potential for impacting the environment.”
There were no reported people aboard and no reported injuries.
The Coast Guard reminds boaters to keep aware of fire hazards and stay prepared with functioning smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, portable fire extinguishers or on board fire extinguishing systems.

Caesar Creek, Broad Creek and Angelfish Creek all connect Card Sound and Biscayne Bay to Hawk Channel with the western terminus of each channel where waters shallow being the issue for cruisers. Carlos is requesting Local Knowledge on depths in the connecting channels.
Hello I have an Ericson 28+ with a 4 foot draft shoal draft keel Does my boat draw enough water to go through Caesar Creek, at the south end of Elliot Key in Florida; or do I cross over using Angel Fish Creek? Many thanks Carlos
I haven’t tried Caesar’s or Broad Creeks, but based upon comments from numerous cruisers would not consider either to be suitable for my 5′ draft. Best bet is stay with Angelfish Creek. The shallowest water is on the Hawks Channel side between channel markers R2A, G3A, G3, R2 with no more than 5.5 feet with Ocean Reef tide at +1.0. Be sure to do a radio call to alert sportfish vessels which must come through on plane.

Welcome to our unique little hideaway. Secluded, serene, and perfectly located, our self-contained cottages have everything you need for a relaxing waterfront vacation.
Hey Winston, thank you very much for checking in. We’re doing fair, we have seven of our cottages open for Keylime sailing club. We’re still cleaning up and repairing and we have yet to get to South Dade Marina. The marina still has boats sitting on top of the dock; 40% of the dock is missing; the sunken boats and boats on the shore. But we will rebuild. And I know we share the story with a lot of marinas and places of business. I count ourselves lucky and pray for the people that have suffered much more than us. Paul Keever
