    • Cruise from Oriental to Ocracoke to Manteo, then north to the Dismal Swamp

      The question copied below originally appeared on the MTOA List-Serve, as did the answers. There is soooo much good information here, that I copied this discussion to this North Carolina section.

      We are considering this route [Oriental to Ocracoke to Manteo and then north toward The Dismal Swamp], wondered if anyone else has gone this way and would give us some guidance. We draw 4 feet and are concerned about the water in some of the shallower parts of the Sound.

      Don’t worry about the water depth. It is easy to find the 6′ plus depths. The deepest point in Pamlico Sound is near Swan Quarter at about 25′. We have traversed this route three times and the only problems we encountered were 4′ following seas and entering the south channel to Roanoke Island on the wrong side of the markers.Â
      Solutions:
      1. Be sure you know which side of the channel to Roanoke Isd. has the green markers.
      2. Head out from Ocracoke when winds are E. to N.W. not when they are behind you.
      3. If caught in difficult following seas, Englehard is a good hole to duck into.Â
      4. Long Point shoal seems to be creaping further out than the older charts show. It’s marked.
      5. Take the Dismal Swamp route. The no wake speed limit is great and overnighting in the canal at the Visitors center or at the dock above Deep Creek lock is quite comfortable.
      6. Get hold of a free North Carolina Coastal Boating Guide for the overall view of the entire area.

      Yes, we did it in 2007. We left from Beaufort, NC, about 70 miles to Oakracoke. Don’t do this in a NE wind, gets real choppy. Bike around Oakracoke for a day and see the beach. Stay at the public dock run by the National Park Service, next to the ferry dock. It’s a 67 mile run to Manteo, again don’t do in a northerly wind. Bike to the Elizabethan gardens. Elizabeth City is 47 miles, strong SW winds make this a misserable crossing. If the weather is nice this is a neat trip.

      Just came from Beaufort to Ocracoke to Manteo about a month ago–after 2 days in Ocracoke arrived Manteo 6/2–will dept around 8/1 for Baltimore via Virginia cut route as no interest in Dismal Swamp this time of year–expect high bug count exists.
      Easy run in good weather with favorable SW wind. We came up Croatan Sound side of Manteo based on very wide passage and only few miles farther than Roanoke Sound but we have talked to a number of people that ran east side with no issue as long as you plot and follow the channels which switch marker colors at the Oregan Inlet channel intersection.
      Regardless of projected wind speed/direction generally find much more favorable during daylight to about noon period +/- an hour or so.
      2-3 days is adequate time to do and see most things at Ocracoke but it is interesting stop-fair amount of history, great fishing and market, beaches.
      Manteo is a real find to spend few days to weeks here-activities on Island as well as immediate proximity(rental car–Enterprise, Killdevil Hills services) to Kitty Hawk and myriad of things to do and see on upper outterbanks, easy drive to Edinton, Elisabeth City area.

      We just did this route in our Nordic Tug with a draft of 4.7.this May while doing the loop. We had no problems with water depth…just stay in the channel!

      We absolutely loved the Great Dismal Swamp, recommend it all. Also stopped at NC Visitors Center, great place and good exchange of information.
      We could not figure out why it was called the Great Dismal Swamp, it was beautiful. Have recommended this route to power boat friends.

    • Anchored on the Pasquotank River (Dismal Swamp Route, St. M. 44-45)

      The section of the Pasqotank River referred to by Captain Chris below, lies just south of Goat Island, and well north of Elizabeth City. I've never tried dropping the hook here before, but it sounds as if this could be a real alternative to anchoring behind Goat Island. Anyone else had experience with this portion of the Pasquotank?

      We have just spent two nights anchored in the Pasquotank River-Dismal Swamp Canal — the section beteeen Mile 44 & 45.
      The western side has about 7 feet to within 150 feet of the waterline and is relatively snag and stump free. The eastern side can be deeper closer in but has far more snags and stumps.
      We had no problem finding a swinging circle for a 45 foot boat with 70 feet of chain out and a minimum depth of 8 feet. We were still 100 yds from the main channel. We did rig a trip line and a deck level anchor light and would recommend both to all.
      It is much breezier and much less buggy in this section than tucked in behind Goat Island (M44.3)
      On the weekends it is a skiboat play ground. On weekdays there is the occasional Dismal Swamp South Mill Lock traffic.
      This place compares favorably to Broad Creek, Pungo Creek and Upper Pungo River – and being fresh water, there are zero crab floats.

      Hi All,
      We were thinking of doing the Dismal Swamp in a few  days.  Has anyone transited this area lately?  We draw 5 ft. and were  wondering about the depths.  Any thoughts would be  appreciated.

      You might want to go the the web site on Salty South East at www.cruisersnet.net and they have some posting of travel through the canal.  Also you might call the Dismal Swamp Canal Visitors Center 252-771-8333.  Penny is the manager and is very help full with information on the water levels and Lock opening times etc.  She communicates the locks on a daily basis.  It was worth the trip to us as we have traversed several times now.

      Havn't been that way yet this year but this is about the best time for a 5' draft boat to make it through. We have had more than enough rain. Can't speak for exact levels but you should be able to get through without any problems.

      We are sitting at the visitor center as I write this. We draw 4' 8". We tapped a couple of submerger logs (?) but by staying in the middle there has been enough water (so far).

      We're thinking about doing it too. We've heard it's beautiful. We draw 4'6 in saltwater in our 65 foot Marlow. How hard were the "taps?" Did you have any trouble with passing other boats?

      We did it last year and are in Elizabeth City now and will go through most likely on Tuesday the most important thing I can say is go slow and do not follow to close behind any other boats as they tend to stir up the dead heads. I would try to stay 1/4 mile behind someone if you can that's what we did last year and had?no problems very nice trip enjoy it.

    • Crab Pots Along AICW/Albmarle Sound Passage

      Crab Pots has always been a problem on Albemarle Sound, and not just along the AICW passage across the sound from Alligator River to either North River (NC – VA Route) or the Pasquotank River (Dismal Swamp Route). This year, though, it looks as if they are a particularl concern.

      All, we just transited the Albemarle Sound (northbound) today. Please use caution if you any concerns re hanging a pot. The sound is solid pots from the Alligator River up to the CG station in the Pasquotank River (on the magenta line). This is the Dismal Swamp route. A companion cruiser went up the to the Virginia Cut and experienced the same. He’s done this route back and forth for 14 years and has never seen the like. I’ve never seen them as dense as we experienced, I thought I was in Maine. The zig zags added a third more time to the transit. Of course the 20-25 knots winds
      gusting to 30 out of the wsw didn’t help any. So much for the forecast of 15 out of the south with 1′ to 2′ ers. Perhaps this is a reflection of the economy and folks trying to make ends meet. Any case be careful up here!

      The location of pots and numbers was explained to me by a local friend who is a good friend of a local commercial crabber( fishes over 400 pots). The large #1 males are coming out of the mud at the eastern end of the Albemarle Sound hence the high concentration of pots in the areas of the two ICW routes at this time of year. As the season progresses the pots will be moved further west up the sound with the crabs. The unemployment rate is 13+% hence more folks are crabbing to survive this tough economy. I wish them well, it’s a tough way to make a living.
      I plan to continue my efforts to avoid depriving them of a single pot.

      We took the Virginia Cut route almost a month ago and noticed the same. The good news was that they seemed to all be placed on the edges of the channel making it hard not to stay in the channel.

      I’ve never seen so many pots as lower pasquatank and up the sound to little river (early July 09). My full keel seems to miss them and sailed that whole section but do not envy those with exposed props.

    • Thoughts On Cruising the Dismal Swamp Canal

      What a GREAT account of cruising the historic Dismal Swamp Canal by Patty, Robert and Maggi! (copied from the AGLCA list). Other fellow cruisers also add to this discussion!

      ORINOCO had the privilege to float on the waters of the Dismal Swamp.  This was an experience akin to walking quietly through the woods on a nature trail.
      The waters splashed in rhythm to the soft hum of the engines propelling mere mortals along in this pristine area of trees and water.  The quietness of the journey in a trawler seems in contradiction ,but quiet it was. The slow speed and gentle splash was hardly noticed by the loud and sometimes frenzied call of the birds, unaware of the travel by mariners this cool morning.  As I sit out on the bow breathing in the cool, damp air, I feel as the ancient boaters of long ago.   The trees are not the same ones, but grew from those same seeds, the dogwood in various shades of pink and white are of the same strands as the first Americans saw on the journey.
      The waters at first wind slowly with houses alongside the banks but are soon replaced by the deep woods and very straight and narrow paths of waterway as we head North to a destination.  Is this not the destination in itself?  The wonder and privilege of travel on a vessel through the swamps and marshes and the hardwood forests makes the act of actually being tied to a dock or anchored just a function ,not the destination. The Dismal Swamp ended too soon with the ancient locks with the old buildings and even older lock operators who drive from the bridge to the lock with no hurry.  We are not hurried only transformed by this experience.

      A beautiful trip as all have said. We passed through in a N to S direction last year but had the unsettling experience of bumping several somethings during the journey. We never saw anything but the boat actually lifted up a bit with each of the bumps and we draw no more than 4 ft. We were going dead slow the whole way and the water wasn't low, a bit unnerving, but, no damage!

      One of the very special experiences of the swamp is if you get the opportunity to meet Robert the lock master at the north end Elizabeth lock. He is a charming and special person dedicated to the canal as a piece of history.  Also he plays a mean conch!

    • Great Times in Elizabeth City (Dismal Swamp Route, Statute Mile 50.5)

      It’s getting almost commonplaced for us to post messages here on the Net’s “North Carolina” section about good cruising experiences in Elizabeth City, NC (a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR). Those who decide to “do the Dismal,” should put a big, red circle around Elizabeth City. Those who bypass with wonderful port of call, are simply missing the best that these waters have to offer!

      On April 1, at about 4:30 in the afternoon we arrived at the Elizabeth City Dock.
      A short time later the City Mayor approached us and offered the hospitality of the city. Explaining all that was available in town from dinner theater, great places to eat, museaums, Post Office and Library as well as free wi fi at the dock.
      What a great feeling being made so welcome after a long days cruise.

      I have met Elizabeth City’ s Mayor, Steve Atkinson, and I can tell you without any fear of spreading an inaccuracy, that he is SERIOUS about attracting the cruising community.       If you are looking for dock space in Elizabeth City and all the “in town places” are taken, for the price of signing a waiver you can dock North of the bridge on the West side next to the Jennette Bros Provision Co. building. Say hello to Eric the bridge tender.

      When we passed through Elizabeth City last summer, the docking looked a little tight for us and we were going to just anchor. But, “some guy” waved us over to the area just about 50 yards south of the free city docks and helped us tie up. I was a little concerned since the bulkhead had a sign “no docking”, but since the “some guy” turned out to be the mayor, we were all smiles. How many places do you know in which the town’s mayor grabs a line for visiting boats???

      Hi,
      We had the same experience in early Oct when pulling in late, about 1700, at Elizabeth City. The guy ran across the park and waved us in to where the tour boat used to dock. The pilings were a little treacherous, but we managed to tie and enjoy the evening. Our two dogs enjoyed the park as well as ourselves. The mayor is Steve Atkinson and he was heading to the Annapolis sailboat show the next day, so I gave him my card so he could use the Annapolis Yacht Club. A very nice fellow and a credit to the city.

    • Overflow Dockage in Elizabeth City, NC (Staute Mile 50.5 – Dismal Swamp Route)

      You learn something new every day here on the Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net. I've been covering the Elizabeth City (A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS' NET SPONSOR) waterfront for 28 years, and I had no idea that boats could dock north of the bridge (see below), if the town docks happen to be full!

      The free city docks in Elizabeth City were full yesterday when we arrived.  We noticed a trawler tied to the long face dock just north of the Elizabeth City bridge, and the bridge operator said we could stay there.  The docks are part of the Jennette Brothers food distributors service.  This locally owned company will make you sign a form excusing any liability, but otherwise they are very accomodating to cruisers when the city docks are full.  No power, but water is available. 
      The Dismal Swamp was beautiful with the changing Fall colors, with depths averaging 7 ft.
      As the morning temp. was 42, we\'re heading south!

    • Good Experience On The Dismal Swamp Route

      Pier 88 Diving: Join the Pier 88 Network! Be covered for emergency underwater service for only $99 per yearWe have received as many postings on the Dismal Swamp AICW Alternate Route lately, as just about any other concernng the North Carolina coastline. There's a real divergence of opinion on this passage within the cruising community. Some really like it (see below), while others worry about striking deadheads and semi-sunken debris. Below, you will hear from one cruiser who came through with nary a problem!

      Skinwalker with its 4.5 draft uses the Dismal going and coming.  The speed limit is 6 mph in the swamp and that seems too fast when your there.  You might thump a  dead head once in a while but at that speed it usually is not a great problem; take it slow & easy.  I personally have had more trouble going the other route with shallows then I have had with the Dismal Swamp thumps. I especially enjoy the south end between the lock and Elizabeth City–simplybeautiful.

    • A Detailed Log of Cruising the Dismal Swamp Canal and Elizabeth City, NC

      The author of the account below, Ted Jones, is the former publisher of the late and much lamented "Coastal Cruising" magazine. Ted is a good friend, and an excellent reporter. There's LOTS of good cruising news in his story!
      Below, Ted comments that the Dismal Swamp Canal locks are only operating twice a day. THAT HAS CHANGED AS OF TODAY! NOW THE LOCKS AND BRIDGES ARE OPERATING NORMALLY, FOUR TIMES A DAY!

      The passage down the Great Dismal Swamp Canal has its contrasts as well. I have often marveled that an ocean capable sailboat could cut through the middle of an impenetrable jungle — masts almost kissing the tree limbs overhead — in such surene surroundings far from her intended element. It is wonderful. Although we were second boat out of the lock, I let the faster boats go ahead, and after awhile we were alone on the canal. The State of Virginia has improved and moved Route 17 away from the canal, so there was virtually nothing to remind us that we were still in a populated area. We opted to stop at the North Carolina combined highway, boating welcome station and tied to the bulkhead for the night along with other cruisers, making new friends both human and canine as we all settled in for the night. I was pleased that my friend Penny Leary-Smith, long time manager of the welcome center was in her office. I reminded her that I had been present at the official innauguration of the center which she reminded me was 20 years ago.
      The NC welcome center has recently opened a Great Dismal Swamp Museum which is located on the north side of the canal, connected by a floating aluminum bridge which is rotated 90 degrees to allow pedestrians (and mantanence vehicles) access to the museum. It contains quite comprehensive and well-done vingenettes which illustrate the various aspects of the swamp, its flaura and fauna. Danny and I wondered if the other had pushed a button to start birds to sing, but realized that it is triggered by a motion sensor when one is looking at the avian illustration.
      Another new museum is located near the waterfront at Elizabeth City which chronacles the development of the Dismal Swamp from native american days to the present time with impressive life-size dioramas of life in the area including the history of the building of the canal and its strategic value as a transportation system from pre-civil war days through world war II. Both of these exhibits have opened within the year and appear poised to expand their offerings as time and money permit. Neither museum charges admission.
      We all shoved off from the welcome station at 0800 to be ready for the morning lock opening. At this time the canal locks at both ends open at 0900 and 1500. A liesurely neander down the Pasquotank River brought us to the Elizabeth City Bridge (highway), and again we were “tail-last-charlie.” We were motioned into the last available spot along the steel bulkhead and were greeted by David, of the Rose Buddies committee who made us welcome and answered our questions. We had counted on obtaining provisions at Elizabeth City, and a call to the Fresh Food Market summoned a car, driven by the store manager, no less, whose name is Ken. His description of the market did not prepare us for the bounty which lay within the area’s newest supermarket, which is one of the most comprehensive food stores I have ever been in. When we had finished our shopping, Ken drove us back to the dock area and helped us unload out groceries.
      I had just enough time for a quick look inside the large and impressive museum across the road while Jack and Danny went in search of hot showers (Ocean Gypsy has two — solar and engine heated water as well as an electric water heater when plugged in [no plug-ins at Elizabeth City] — but they were each hoping for more sybaritic luxury than these). I was successful, they were not, having been confused by second hand directions. Then it was time for the Rose Buddies wine and chese party. Original Rose Buddy, Fred Fearing, passed away recently, but there are many who have stood up to carry on the tradition, one of whom is the recently elected city mayor, Steve, who spent a few minutes welcoming us snowbird cruisers, telling us of his plans to expand the waterfront facilities (bathrooms with showers are on the agenda in the near future). All of this is free, BTW, including dockage for up to 48 hours! Alas, there is no marine diesel, water, or pump-out available, all of which we thought we needed. Jack and I walked two blocks to a nearby convenience store and filled our five gallon diesel can for insurance. We didn’t need the brush handle we had brought along to share the load coming back to the boat as we were offered a ride by a pleasant young man hanging out at the conveniece store. We tipped him accordingly.
      After the wine and chese party I found Steve prowling the docks looking for space for new arrivals. Elizabeth City’s mayor is not above working the docks in his bretton red shorts and Topsiders as one of the Rose Buddies. Indeed, he is one of us, a sailor.

    • Why You Should Consider “Doing the Dismal” This Fall

      Peg and Jim's message below (copied from the Great Loop list) is a fair testament to the good and less than good qualities of this historic, alternate ICW route. As I've said many times. when not in a hurry to get somewhere, and the water levels and lock openings permit, we usually choose to run the Dismal Swamp route! Of course, if you need to get somewhere by a certain date, or are just fleeing south to find warmer weather, the NC-VA cut via Coinjoick is clearly faster and generally easier to navigate. And, don't forget as Peg and Jim note below (and already mentioned on several earlier Net postings), that the Dismal locks are currently only operating twice a day!

      Sanctuary and crew decided to travel the Dismal Swamp Route south this fall. To avoid the morning bridge restrictions on the Elizabeth River, we spent last night on the hook at the Deep Creek lock. There were several other boats there with us. As of today, there are two lockings per day; 09h00 and 15h00, at both Deep Creek and South Mills. We were the third boat in line at the lock, and we passed a sailing cat because they were stopping at the North Carolina Visitor's Center and we weren't. We followed the first boat (trawler) at a distance of about 1/2 mile. We traveled between 6 and 7 mph.
      The canal from South Mills to the "Administrators House" has been dredged, and we saw nothing less than 8 1/2 feet of water. South of the "Administrators House," we saw areas of 7 ft. The rest of the route to Elizabeth City held at least 7 ft.
      There are a lot of dead heads, and a lot of flotsam. We saw one 15" diameter by 10 ft free floating log. We bumped something once, but at slow speed so no damage. Stay alert!
      The lockmaster at Deep Creek (not Robert) said the reason for the restricted locking schedule was a fire in the swamp in May that severely depleted Lake Drummond's huge water reserve. The lockmaster at South Mills confirmed that, but said the folks at Great Bridge "were totally swamped" with traffic because of the Dismal Swamp restrictions, and said he'd been told they would go back to 4 locking per day "next week." Those of you headed south who might be interested in the Dismal Swamp route should keep an eye on that.
      We were warmly welcomed at Elizabeth City. The Rose Buddy party is still running under the auspices of the Visitor's Welcome Center. It starts at 16h30 weekdays. All the slips were full when we arrived, but there was space at the wall to the southwest. No problems.
      Others will disagree, but we heartily recommend "the swamp" to those who might not have tried it. It's a very lovely trip; some of the wildest country on the A-ICW, and no go fast boats!!! Go slowly (placidly); you will be rewarded with nature at it's best and no damages to props. Peg and Jim Healy, aboard Sanctuary currently at Elizabeth City, NC

    • Exellent Storm Protection on Dismal Swamp Canal and Pasquotank River

      I've always known that the waters of Pasquotank River and the Dismal Swamp Canal were very well sheltered from rough water. Now, this impression is confirmed by Captain Ray below!

      Message: We just rode out the north-easter inside the canal and the Pasquatank River. The wind was howling over the trees but the water was calm and quiet. This was a great place to ride out the storm. The senery is beautiful. My mast height is 50 feet and the trees were always higher, giving good protection. I never saw less than 4-1/2 feet inside the canal locks. There was low water exiting South Mills because the storm blew the water down the river the day we came through.

    • Pelican Marina (Staute Mile 50.5 – Dismal Swamp Route – Elizabeth City)

      Since the ownership changed at Pelican Marina last year, we have had several complimentary reports here on the Cruisers’ Net about this facility. Captain Dave’s message below continues that tradition!

      Message: I am responding to a news contribution from Sept 16 by MV Hale Kai. I am currently living aboard at The Pelican Marina where they still do a very steady transient business. I do know that more and more they stay full (including nightly slips) because of how ideal their marina is. When possible, us as monthly slipholders even use the excuse to go hang on the hook and free up additional slips. They offer a flat nightly rate of $35, and that is all inclusive (even laundry). It is true that they have sold slips. What is not true is that they are all privately owned. The Pelican still owns 65% and the rest are still rented monthly or nightly.

      Message: We just (Oct 4) came through the Dismal Swamp Canal and overnighted at the Pelican Marina. Plenty of water in the canal – we had 8 feet all the way through. Pelican Marina was $35 for the night – we are 43 feet and the laundry and electric were included. This is an endorsement for the marina. Nice people and an easy walk over the bridge into town.

    • Elizabeth City, NC (Statute Mile 50.5) And the Dismal Swamp Canal

      There is a lot of interest in Elizabeth City, and the Dismal Swamp Canal right now (9/23/08) as a place to possibly ride out the storm that is brewing off the North Carolina coastline. I just telephoned the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center, and confirmed that the canal’s locks ARE STILL OPERATING ON A RESTRICTED SCHEDULE. THEY ARE CURRENTLY OPENING ONLY AT 9:00 AM AND 3:00 PM!!!

      Below is a series of notes I have copied from the Great Loop list. By the way, both yours truly and that late, great Skipper Bob agree that the free city docks in Elizabeth City can get rough in REALLY foul weather, though in anything short of a gale, they make for a GREAT overnight stop!

      We are considering doing the Dismal Swamp Canal in about 7 days Can you post any comments as to water level & are the Lock back on normal schedule?
      Any problem in making the transit?

      Sanctuary was at the Elizabeth City docks on Mother’s Day, 2008. We knew a blow was coming, but we chose to tie up at the docks. Some neighbors moved to the anchorage above the bridge, but we did not. Based on that experience, I warn all EC visitors to be *very mindful* of Skipper Bob’s advice on the EC docks. That storm system blew through the area carrying southeast to northwest winds that came straight up the Pasquotank River. This caused two problems. First, the water rose several feet, into local parking lots, and the very short finger piers made it quite difficult to get
      on and off the boat. Second, the water at the sea wall was extremely rough. As the waves hit the seawall and reflected back off the solid wall, standing waves formed. It was a rough ride. We took a little damage to the handrail while we were at dinner.
      Don’t misunderstand, we love Elizabeth City and we love the Dismal Swamp Canal. I just support Skipper Bob’s observations about conditions when sustained winds blow from the southeast.
      There is a good anchorage just up river from the drawbridge. You be better off there in a real blow, and dinghy into town.
      The NC Welcome Center in the canal would also be quite secure (except fortrees???)!!!
      YMMV, but that’s our experience.

      The water level in the canal is 6 feet minimum. Canal locks are opening only at 0900 and 1500 daily.
