On 5/9/13, as part of a North Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:

Statute Mile 154 ‘“ who has anchored on Eastham Creek, off the Waterway’s eastern shoreline, hard by marker #13? If so, where did you drop the hook? What depths did you discover? Is that a good anchorage for cruising size craft?

      Responses follow:

Eastham [Creek Anchorage] is so easy. Eastham is good with 8 ft depths north of #4. Upstream about # 7 is fine also if you need more protection or privacy.

    • Up the Pamlico River to Washington, NC (Statute Mile 146)

Whether you want to revisit the past or satisfy your curiosities, discover the arts or explore your true nature, you can do it from the heart of the Inner Banks - Washington, North Carolina. 800 546 0On 5/9/13 as part of a North Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:

Statute Mile 146 ‘“ who has abandoned the AICW, and cruised upstream on Pamlico River to Washington, NC? Did you stop at Broad Creek, and visit with McCotters Marina? If so, please give us a description of this facility. Or, did you continue upstream to the excellent Washington City Docks? Again, if so, please describe this municipal marina. Did you find any good dining choices in downtown Washington? Is this a side trip you would recommend to fellow cruisers?

      Responses follow:

If time permits a visit to little Washington would be a treat. Dockmasters, water & electricity, decent showers and very few transients competing for your time. Several convenience stores close as well as West Marine. Within easy walk restaurants recommended:
      Grub Bros
      Down on Main
      On the Waterfront
Don’t miss a visit to the Estuarium for an education on the second largest estuary in the U.S.
      Gray & Betty Riddick

Washington has very nice docks with or without electric. One needs only to radio Washington City dockmaster on channel 16 to gain accommodation. There is also a mooring field directly across from the city docks and the city has a dingy dock. Sanitary facilities are located in a trailer at the west end of the docks pending a new building in the next year or so.
There are numerous restaurants on the Main St., about a block away, which cater to most any taste and budget. All locals have their favorites so it would be best to inquire of the dockmaster relative to the various venues and their offerings.
Groceries, Wal-Mart, and the ABC store are more than a mile plus away so transportation is necessary for supplies. West Marine is in town and is within walking distance. Directly next to West Marine is Washington Crab & Oyster Co. which claims to have the largest selection of seafood in Eastern NC.
Unfortunately, no fuel is available in Washington but there is a pump out facility at the docks.
Washington has numerous small boutiques, stores and galleries on Main St. but aside from Main St. there isn’t a lot to see or do. It’s basically pretty quiet.
When venturing to Washington be sure to follow the channel which is well marked being aware of Grandpap Island which is just east of the railroad trestle and is semi-submerged with but a few dead trees showing. Be careful going through the railroad trestle which is quite narrow and can be difficult depending on wind and wave. West of the trestle is a no wake zone all the way to the docks and/or mooring field. There is plenty of depth west of the trestle. Not so to the east.

If so, please furnish us with a description of what you found. Or, did you anchor in Pantego Creek? If so, where, and did you have a problem with being rocked and rolled a bit too much? Responses follow:

Very helpful marina staff and a nice marine store. The restaurant here is just outstanding. It was packed with people, so the locals eat here as well as the boaters. Excellent food, desserts, drinks, and service. Also, because it is just a long face dock and there is no current, it is very easy to tie up as well as to head out early the next day.

    • Banks Channel Anchorage (Statute Mile 280)

On 5/9/13 as part of a North Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:

Statute Mile 280- who has traversed the Motts Channel in Wrightsville Beach, to the Banks Channel, and anchored south of the 8 foot bridge on the Banks Channel? Did you encounter any less than ideal depths on the western end of the Motts Channel? Did you find sufficient shelter when anchored on the Banks Channel? Did you dinghy ashore at the public park, and, if so, did you find any good shoreside restaurants in Wrightsville Beach?

      Responses follow:

There is plenty of depth; however, leave plenty of scope. The current is strong, and the anchorage is open to the south. We did dingy to shore and walked around Wrightsville Beach, but did not eat ashore. There were a number of resteraunts some of which were closed for the season. Call ahead!
      John Pholeric

Anchored below the bridge in Banks Channel on 5/7/13. Have anchored there several times. Left on 5/8 by way of Motts channel in morning at high tide with plenty of water. Will not consider entering by Motts channel near low tide. Confirmed potential problems with Boat US last fall.

    • Report from Big Foot Slough Channel, off the AICW in Pamlico Sound

Big Foot Slough - Click for Chartview

Big Foot Slough Channel is the primary entrance from Pamlico Sound to Ocracoke and Silver Lake Harbor and is used by the vast majority of cruising craft and both Ocracoke car ferries. It is a narrow channel and caution should always be exercised. Based on Capt. Deharts’ observations, last year’s shoaling in the channel seems to have been alleviated by dredging completed last November, 2012. Therefore, we are cancelling the Navigation Alert posted early last year.

      Cruising News:
No problems with Big Foot Slough channel into Ocracoke. Minimum depth I saw on a trip there last week was 14 feet. Still some shoaling on the green side just after you enter the channel, but these areas are well marked by cans. If you have never been there or haven’t been there in a while, remember it is green to starboard when approaching Ocracoke from the sound!

Beaufort Municipal Docks - Click for Chartview

Queen Anne’s Revenge is 502 Front St. (252-504-7272) and Clauson’s is at 425 Front St. (252-728-2133). Both are within easy walking distance of the Municipal Docks, also on Front St.. The town of Beaufort, NC is known as a real success story along the Waterway and this wonderful port of call remains one of our favorites, anytime, anywhere!

Having dined at both Queen Anne Revenge and Clauson’s in Beaufort have been enjoyable. Clauson’s is a little pricey, but the food and service was very good. Queen Anne’s is a little more laid back. Overlooks the water and has a great selection of wines as well. Either restaurant will provide a pleasant dinner, but Clauson’s offers a more formal dinner selection.

    • Southport Marina, Southport, NC, AICW Statute Mile 309.5

      Southport Marina

Southport Marina - Click for Chartview

Southport Marina – A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! – lies just west of the Cape Fear River along the northern banks of the Waterway hard by flashing daybeacon #2A.

This newly renovated marina is in the heart of downtown Southport. It is within walking distance of the commercial fishing harbor and many restaurants and stores. The entrance is directly off the ICW on the north shore just after passing the fishing harbor on the starboard side when headed south.
Water depths need to be watched here. Transient boaters are usually docked on the face dock that forms a long T-head with the dock office in the center. Water depths are fine in that area, but elsewhere low tide causes some very shallow spots. Fuel is available and there is a small ships store.
Southport is also a quaint southern town reminiscent of Beaufort, SC, and is well worth a visit. The marina is well maintained and conveniently located.

    • Bald Head Island Marina, Cape Fear River, near AICW Statute Mile 309

910-457-7380Well, of course, Bald Head Island Marina is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, as well as being an AGLCA sponsor!
This facility is found hard by the seaward mouth of the Cape Fear River, within sight of the “Old Baldy” lighthouse! Give them a try – you won’t be sorry!

Bald Head Island is at the mouth of the Cape Fear River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. When going south down the Cape Fear River it is located further southeast past the point where the ICW leaves the river at Southport. The inlet to the marina is on the west end of the island, or equivalently the east side of the river. It is well marked and framed by two short rock jetties. The current on the river runs fast and entrance into the inlet must take that into account. Additionally, the inlet channel shoals and is routinely dredged to maintain ferry access to the island. Transiting at mid to high tide is prudent.
The marina has floating slips and T-heads and good space for transient boaters. There is one restaurant and a ship’s store in the marina plus restrooms and showers. Fuel and a pump out are available. Kayaks and golf carts can be rented to use on the island (there are no cars allowed).
This marina is an excellent jump off point for boaters going offshore headed south. It’s only a short 30 mile trip to the Little River Inlet at Myrtle Beach.

910-269-2380 The new 82-slip Deep Point Marina is located on the Cape Fear River in Southport, NC, and offers fuel and transient dockage, as well as daily, monthly and annual slip rentals. The marina is adjacent to the new Bald Head Island Ferry Terminal, which houses a snack bar (open seasonally) that offers grab-and-go food options, soft drinks, beer, wine and coffee. In addition, the Deep Point Marina is convenient to Southport's shopping, restaurants and historic district, and offers easy ocean access.

Deep Point Marina lies in the Cape Fear River via a marked entry channel northwest of Cape Fear River/AICW marker #20 and is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

This marina is located on the western shore of the Cape Fear River just north of downtown Southport. Deep Point has floating docks with slips and T-heads and is the operating terminal for the Bald Head Island Ferry. This marina is just a bit south of the NC State Ferry terminal for the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry. It is near the Cape Fear River channel Red marker 20 (nun buoy).
Fuel is available and, seasonally, there is a café in the ferry terminal. Travel into Southport requires a taxi or a car ride. Taking the ferry to visit Bald Head Island is a convenient option when stopping here.

    • Seapath Yacht Club & Transient Marina, Wrightsville Beach, NC, AICW Statute Mile 284

Seapath Yacht Club - Click for Chartview

Seapath Yacht Club lies northwest of Motts Channel’s unlighted daybeacon #21.

Located on Motts Channel, which is just south of the Wrightsville Beach bridge, the marina is on the north side of the channel about a tenth of a mile east of the ICW. This marina provides dockage for transient boats primarily on its long floating face dock. Fuel is available and stores and restaurants are within walking distance.
This marina is particularly useful as jump off point prior to the five bridges when going north on the ICW, or as an end of day port if making an offshore run from the Beaufort Inlet to the Masonboro Inlet just south of Wrightsville Beach. Access via the inlet to Banks Channel and Motts Channel makes it easy to reach Seapath. The only difficulty (that is well known) is that Motts Channel has a tendency to shoal where it meets the ICW (see Cruiser’s net report).

Family owned and operated, Casper’s Marine Service lies at the western foot of the Swansboro channel -northeast of flashing daybeacon #46C in Swansboro, NC.

Located in Swansboro this marina is at the east end of Bogue Sound near the Bogue Inlet and the White Oak River. It is easily accessed but is fairly exposed in windy conditions. It has fixed docks with slips and one T-head. Fuel is available and there are several restaurants nearby.
NOTE: This stop is a convenient spot just before the ICW stretch going south that has five bridges with the names, heights and opening schedules shown below. Because the two that open only hourly are 22 miles apart, at trawler & sailboat speeds (with frequent no-wake areas for all boats) transiting this area often makes for a long day. Any boaters that can fold down their mast and antennas to go under a 20 ft bridge are well advised to do so.

Beaufort Municipal Docks - Click for Chartview

It is certainly good to hear positive comments about this popular stopping point for Waterway cruisers. The town of Beaufort, NC is known as a real success story along the Waterway and this wonderful port of call remains one of our favorites, anytime, anywhere!

Beaufort (on the east) and Morehead City (on the west) straddle the ICW at the Route 70 highway bridge. There is a back channel entrance to Beaufort when approaching from the north, but we do not recommend that route. Instead the best approach is to go out and around Radio Island and to enter the Beaufort harbor from the south.
The Beaufort Docks marina is in the center of the Beaufort downtown tourist area, and is adjacent to a large mooring field. The docks are floating docks with slips and T-heads. The dockhands are capable and will direct you to a dockage that takes into account the direction of the strong tidal currents in the harbor. Belhaven Waterway Marina - Click for Chartview

Belhaven Waterway Marina is found on the northeastern banks of Pantego Creek, north of marker #9.

There are a few choices in the Belhaven area, which is the first area when going southbound that offers marina stops after Coinjock, other than the Alligator River Marina (which is a good stop in bad weather). Over the years the choices have evolved as the marinas have changed. We find the Belhaven Waterway Marina to be best because it is located in `downtown’ Belhaven near a few stores and several restaurants. All other nearby marinas are some distance away from this area.
The marina is located inside the breakwater on Pantego Creek just off the Pungo River. It is reached by following the marked channel up the creek (past the River Forrest Marina) to the next dock area on the starboard side adjacent to a newly built multiple story condominium development. The entrance is a narrow channel next to the condos that is identified by a marina sign and a prominent gazebo. The dockage is along a fixed face dock on the port side of the channel. Water depth can be an issue when entering the channel, but we’ve brought in two boats with 5.5 foot draft without a problem.
The nearby `Fish Hooks’ restaurant is one of a few popular seafood restaurants in the area. There is no fuel at this stop. But the marina owner is a well regarded boat repair mechanic if service is needed.

    • Resolution to Tax Woes in Hanover County, Cape Fear River, Wilmington, NC

“Death and Taxes”…what can you say? Our sympathies Captain Chappell. Fortunately, this situation was resolved.

RE: New Hanover County (Wilmington, NC)
They not only are zealous but are quite bloody minded in the way they deal with People. They continued to bill me for two years after the boat was sold, and just will not accept the fact the boat was not in their County during the next year after I made the mistake of staying over January 1st the Year before.
As I was cruising south’¦.and did not take up a slip or mooring anywhere and thus had no Marina Bill to show’¦they continue to insist I owed them for the full year despite not being there.
They freely admit the Marina documented my departure date but despite having that information’¦.continue to ignore what that statement said’¦.’Departed!’
My advice to all’¦.pass right on through New Hanover County’¦.do not stop’¦do not buy a single thing in New Hanover County’¦.go on into South Carolina where you are welcome and do not have the burden of dealing with the New Hanover County Tax Office.
Their comment to me, `Tax has to be paid every year on your boat!’ sums up their attitude. They refuse to accept that Boaters only have to comply with the laws for the Tax Jurisdiction they find themselves within. Which for them means a great many of New Hanover County boaters cross the SC State Line for a couple of weeks, pay for a Slip and escape paying taxes to New Hanover County’¦.which saves a lot of money for the Boater.
If I had known the Tax problems I would have with New Hanover County (Wilmington, NC)’¦.I would never have stopped there. As people have noted’¦.New Bern Tax folks are quite pleasant and helpful in the way they conduct their business of collecting taxes’¦.which is not the case in New Hanover County.
      Ralph Chappell

      Cruising News:
I posted earlier about dealing with the New Hanover County Tax Office re Tax issues on my boat. My earlier post was not very favorable about that organization.
Upon reaching a Supervisory level staff member we quickly worked out a resolution that was quite fair and not at all problematic.
Perhaps there is hope after all.
I believe the secret is as always….only deal with a person who has the authority to actually make a determination and not the low ranking clerks who have no decision making authority.
My comments about the North Carolina Tax law re Cruising Sailors remains unchanged. The State drives off way too much business and thus creates a great hardship on businesses that would otherwise enjoy trade with those traveling about on their boats.
The other advice unfortunately remains….be a pack rat with receipts, bills, logs, notes, journals, photographs, and bar tabs….to prove exactly where your boat was at any given day, date, and time. Seems a pity it has to be that way.
      Ralph Chappell
