    • More Praise for Charleston Harbor Marina, Charleston Harbor, AICW Statute Mile 465

Seaside Luxury at its best Always a pleasure to hear such good words about A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! Charleston Harbor Marina is located on the eastern banks of the Cooper River downstream of Patriots Point between Horse Reach’s flashing buoys #34 and #36.

My husband and I made Charleston Harbor Marina our 1st stop in a month long cruise out of Southport. Capt. Stan, the Harbormaster, and his crew made our stay carefree and he even offered to make reservations for our destinations along our route. The breakwater out front does its job to deaden the wakes of boat/ship traffic and lessens any current, which makes the boat happy. The showers and bathrooms were clean, laundry on site and the hotel amenities and a shuttle to Charleston are available. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to stopping again on our return.

      Cruising News:
We are staying at Charleston Harbor Marina and find it an excellent facility. It’s really windy (20-30knots) but we are comfortable in a slip. Shuttle serve to Charleston was convenient. Enjoyed a nice light supper at the Reel Bar. Definitely recommend this marina if you can’t get in to the City Marina.

    • Price Angst at Beaufort Municipal Docks, Beaufort, NC, AICW Satutue Mile 201

We confirmed David’s prices: $2.30/ft under 50ft, $2.50 for 50ft and over, $6.00/night for 30amp, $12.00/night for 50amp. There is a $.10 per foot discount for seven days or longer. The transient rates at Charleston’s City Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, are $2.00/ft up to 69 ft and their monthly rates vary with the season. In September, the monthly rate is $20/ft. Comparing this to Harbor Town Yacht Basin, also A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, on Hilton Head where the rates are $2.00 up to 49ft, $2.50 50ft to 79ft with weekly discounts of $.25 /foot up to 49ft and $.50 /foot 50ft to 79ft. $12 for 30amp and $15 for 50amp, makes Beaufort Municipal Docks slightly more expensive than both City Marina and Harbor Town. With these prices along the AICW, one can easily understand why anchoring rights are so much in the news now.

We loved old town Beaufort ‘“ great food, shops and friendly people. The marina is expensive (2.30/ft with a whopping 0.10 discount for > 7 days) ‘” 2 weeks there cost almost twice what a month costs at Charleston City Marina which is much nicer. Lots of current, rude staff (except the head dockmaster who was very helpful and friendly), and old equipment. We’ll not return.

This is certainly good news for area boaters. We’d like to hear from others about boating conditions in your waters.

This morning took icw Charleston to Georgetown. No damage visible. No significant floating debris. Marinas at both ends doing well.

Just stayed at Charleston Harbor Marina – can’t say enough about it. Clean, modern facilities, resort amenities, friendly staff (especially Stan, the Harbormaster), and a great location. Will definitely be back!

On a trip from SC to New England my wife and I stayed at this first class marina both coming and going. It is under new management and it certainly shows it. We were treated very nicely by the dock hands and the use of the hotel amenities are phenomenal.

We are doing the loop and arrived here at Charleston Harbor Marina and Resort June 1, 2011, departing July 6, 2011.
This is a great marina for many reasons. The marina staff is responsive, friendly and knowledgeable. The docks are well maintained and easy to dock plus they are floating. The marina is associated with the resort where you can enjoy the pool and restaurant. Shuttle service is available that takes you to the city of Charleston, Sullivans Island, Shems Creek (great places to eat) or the major shopping center. The marina is close to many marina services for any type repairs.
We plan to return and winter here.

    • Praise for Charleston Harbor Marina (Charleston Harbor, near Mount Pleasant)

Seaside Luxury at its best It’s always such a pleasure to publish a glowing account of a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR. We agree that Charleston Harbor Marina is a first-rate facility in every way!

On May 10, 2011, `Hemisphere Dancer’ stopped at Charleston Harbor Marina at Patriots Point. Harbormaster, Capt. Stan Jones, was happy to receive us, assign us a convenient slip to the showers/head, and provide us with information regarding this Charleston Resort. The breakwater surrounding the marina provided smooth, comfortable slips during my two-day stay, which included an early morning thunderstorm (no charge). The floating docks have water & electricity and free wi-fi. The showers and bathrooms are tiled, laundry next to baths, ice is available on the main dock, and the `Ollie the Trolley’ shuttle van operates on the hour, free of charge, to downtown Charleston or Sullivan’s Island (i.e.Ft.Moultrie) from 10 am to 10 pm. Boaters have permission to use the Resort’s pool, spa, and restaurant for some very comfortable living. The restaurant features a private display of vintage, handcrafted, big game, fishing reels, two big TV’s to catch up on the latest weather or game, and free wi-fi. Attached to the Marina is Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum where for a small fee one may explore the USS Yorktown (CV-10), the submarine USS Clamagore (SS-343), a Destroyer USS Laffey (away in the yards), a Vietnam Support Base, Memorials, Gift Shop, and several movies documenting parts of WWII. Whew! I spent two days immersed in History! When I considered all of the services, luxuries, and activities available, I thought the marina transient fee of $2.00/foot was a bargain, and after receiving a Boat U.S. discount of 5%, I definitely plan to return.

    • Excellent Service at Charleston City Boatyard, Wando River north from Charleston Harbor

The Charleston City Boatyard is found on the northern reaches of the Wando River north of red marker #40

I’m writing now not as an editor, but as a Do-It-Yourself boatowner.
As some of you may have experienced, DIYers do not always get a fair shake at some boatyards. As a Charleston City Marina slipholder, I am pleased to report that our recent haulout, stay and launch at the Charleston City Boatyard was a thoroughly pleasant experience – if bottom painting can ever be pleasant? Not only were we treated with respect as DIYers, but the service was prompt, friendly and professional. All charges were exactly as quoted. The Yard Manager, Chuck Wood, and his crew handled all work with efficiency and on schedule. This was our first visit to the City Boatyard, but it won’t be our last!

We stayed at this marina for Charleston Race week. The service was responsive and prompt. Enjoyed the fact that here are many good restaurants within walking distance. Also Whole Foods and Harris Teeter for groceries. Starbucks is also close to the grocery stores. A visit to the Yorktown and a round of golf are near by.

    • High Praise for Charleston City Boatyard on the Wando River, Charleston, SC

The City Boatyard is located on the Wando River north of the Charleston Harbor . Follow the Wando River and the Boatyard will be on north side of the river, past the Don Holt Bridge (I-526) at Marker #40 immediately before of the Highway 41 bridge.

Have had Elixir– 34′ PDQ- hauled at Charleston City Boatyard for bottom paint and some maintenance that I do not feel comfortable doing myself. Was a very good experience! They even suggested different methods of work that would save me money!!! I had a problem with a coolant leek on port engine– sent a very knowledgeable mechanic immediately to correct the problem. I think I paid a premium price, but the attitude, competence and follow up is very worth it. I had gotten another quote for another yard, but they never replied to 3 follow-up emails that I sent with some questions re the work. I’ll be back there [City Boatyard] for future work!!

    • Charleston Maritime Center (Cooper Rive

Get any three veteran AICW cruisers together, and you’ll get four opinions about the best place to coil your lines in historic Charleston. Clearly, Captain Robinson’s vote would go to Charleston Maritime Center (see below), but do note his comment about the “surge.” We have observed this same unfortunate effect as well.

We are staying at the Maritime Center which is on the Cooper River side of town. It is a great location friendly service and really convenient to everything from shopping to the old historic district, great restaurants, the library and more all in easy walking distance. the only down side is the surge especially on days with strong winds, but that is a matter of personal taste.

    • Tidal Currents and Restricted Bridge on AICW/Wappoo Creek – Elliott Cut (near St. M. 471)

South of Charleston, the AICW leaves the Ashely River and traverses a partially man-made, partially natural creek/canal known as both Wappoo Creek and Elliott Cut. To say that tidal currents boil through this passage is something akin to announcing that the sun it a little bit bright.
And, apparently the South Carolina DOT feels our on-the-water lives need even more spice, so one of the bridges crossing this passage carries a closed vertical clearance of 33 feet, and a restricted opening schedule. Below, Captain Ted Jones, former publisher of the late, great “Coastal Cruising” magazine, relates a short story about how commercial traffic can sometimes make these waters even more exciting!

We waited for half an hour for the Wapoo Creek bridge’s scheduled opening at 0900. Two tugs pushing construction barges were waiting on the other side, going north. When I heard them call, I told the bridge tender that we would allow them to pass through ahead of us, but in when the bridge opened they were so far back that I wasn’t sure they were coming. We, and the sailboat waiting behind us, got through and out of the way well before the tug captains were ready to go through.

      C. Winston Fowler

Wow.. have cruisers noticed the mention that they are going to take away from the public anchorage to shift the channel over? The anchorage that’s there is already one of the more difficult anchorages to deal with along the coast. There are numerous derelicts and the reversing current requires a lot of spacing between properly anchored vessels. When the wind picks up the chop gets fairly significant and requires even more scope. In other words, there’s not much room right now in the anchorage, and they’re looking to reduce its size? Their cost of building new slips is less than dredging. I get that, but what happens in another 10 years when they lose even more room to shoaling. Put a marina management plan in place to deal with the shoaling rather than taking away from the only `real’ anchorage in Charleston! I’d be curious who to contact to express an opinion.

    • An Endorsement of Dolphin Cove Marina (Charleston, SC – on the Ashley River)

Dolphin Cove Marina is located on the Ashely River upstream of the other Charleston Ashley River facilities. I can personally vouch that this is a quite, reasonably priced facility, with excellent management and a new on-site restaurant. Always a popular stop in a narrow, but well protected span of water behind a small island just south of the Hwy. 17 bridge, just a stone’s throw from Charleston and the Ashley River.

Behind the island in the Wappoo Creek is about the best [anchorage near Charleston] – and you can dinghy to the Charleston Crab House restaurant and walk a half mile to a Piggly Wiggly and a Subway and a liquor store – though not necessarily in that order. You can dock temporarily at the City Marina for $5 an hour but the overnight transient rate is outrageous unless you are of mega-yacht status.

Very nice comments about one of the growing number of premier marinas in the Charleston area, and this one is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! Charleston Harbor Marina is actually located on the Mount Pleasant side of Charleston Harbor, within a stone’s throw of the Patriots Point park exhibitions and facilities.

Stopped by to refuel and I was impressed with the facility. The `attitude’ of the entire marina seemed better than last fall and prior to that with the marina crew seeming to be happy to help with anything needed. I’m not sure what the change was, but the entire facility was more `user friendly’ and I’ll definitely stop by again. Food was good and the `Reel Bar’ is a blast. • Pierside Boatworks, Cooper River, Charleston, SC

Having visited this boatyard, formerly Charleston Boat Yard, on several recent occasions, I can attest to the excellent work being done by the new owner, John Brophy. Like most owner-operated concerns, Pierside Boatworks is having great success. 843-554-7775 and john@piersideboatworks.com

If you ever need a boatyard for maintenance: bottom paint, prop work, through hull fitting work etc. or just to have your boat on the hard for a period of time, please think Pierside Boatworks with John Brophy. He is an upfront owner who will give quotes and timing and then stick by them. John operates the yard to accommodate owners who want to do work themselves or to have his professional team look after your needs. The yard is secure and the staff is welcoming and professional in their areas of expertise. We have done business with John for the past few years and have not been disappointed. Please check them out.
Captains Tim and Marion Barnett (WHATEVER)

We spent almost a month on the hard here. While they raised our waterline by 3 inches and put a new bootstripe on, we spent 2 weeks compounding, polishing and waxing our sailboat from stem to stern and worked on various other projects. They took care of us every step of the way, and John Brophy deserves a lot of credit for the work he’s done to the place. They were incredibly welcoming, even allowing us to use their conference room to homeschool our kids while we were working on our boat. I can’t recommend them enough.

I have always found the Charleston Maritime Center a bit cramped, but others obviously have a different point of view.

Great Marina. Reasonable ($1.50 for BoatUS, deals on weekly and monthly), friendly, helpful staff. Close to very good grocery, city library, coffee shops, restaurants, gym, movie theater and walking distance to historic Charleston’s great old homes, Battery Park, good restaurants, galleries, museums, bus and trolley lines etc. Some pretty good surge on tide changes, but not unreasonable. Definitely the place to stay if you are passing through and want to see some of Charleston. City Marina on the other side is a little far out.
