    • Report on Calabash Creek Anchorage, 3/17/10, AICW Statute Mile 342

Calabash Creek lies to the north off the Waterway just south of the SC/NC state line. This anchorage can get very crowded during the busy season, but if you can find a spot, there are two fine seafood restaurants are just upstream by dinghy.
Please note the Navigation Alert linked below indicating the possibility of shoaling at the intersection of the Waterway and Calabash Creek. Also, we have personally sounded, and other cruisers have reported, as little as 4 feet entering Calabash Creek to anchor, during MLW, but Captain Bill must have found a channel we missed.

I anchored at Calabash Creek on July 5, 2011, without any problem. I arrived at exactly low tide, and watched a large sportfisher and two large drift fishing boats go through and decided to give it a try. They were coming from [Little] River inlet and crossing the ICW. They hugged the ICW R2, leaving it to port, then stayed well of the Calabash Creek R2, leaving it to starboard. I draw 5.5 feet, and saw 6.5 feet passing ICW R2. I anchored in 9.5 feet between R2 and G3 just off the north shore. It was a nice anchorage once the stream of fishing boats and shrimpers finished the day. I would never have tried this on falling tide.

Seaside Luxury at its best Charleston Harbor Marina is located on the eastern banks of the Cooper River downstream of Patriots Point between Horse Reach’s flashing buoys #34 and #36.

We are doing the loop and arrived here at Charleston Harbor Marina and Resort June 1, 2011, departing July 6, 2011.
This is a great marina for many reasons. The marina staff is responsive, friendly and knowledgeable. The docks are well maintained and easy to dock plus they are floating. The marina is associated with the resort where you can enjoy the pool and restaurant. Shuttle service is available that takes you to the city of Charleston, Sullivans Island, Shems Creek (great places to eat) or the major shopping center. The marina is close to many marina services for any type repairs.
We plan to return and winter here.

    • Port Royal Battery Creek Anchorage, off the AICW at Statue Mile 541

Battery Creek Anchorage lies south of Beaufort and Port Royal on the waters of Battery Creek (northeast of the AICW’s flashing buoy #41) , west of unlighted daybeacon #47. The “dockside restaurant” described below lies on the shores of the village of Port Royal, and is known, appropriately enough, as Dockside Restaurant (843) 524-7433.

Late afternoon 6/30/11 North bound to Beaufort SC, used my iPhone to chk cruisers.net anchorages. Easy, dropped hook in 22′ water, sand bottom. Dinghied 100 yds to Dockside restaurant floating dock next to shrimpers dock/plant. Good food and perfect in to the day.

    • Praise for Georgetown Landing Marina, AICW Statute Mile 403

Located just south of Hwy 17 Bridge in the mouth of the Great Pee Dee River, Georgetown Landing Marina has a long, welcoming transient/fuel dock that makes easy handling of the occasional opposing wind and river currents that can occur.

We are first timers on the ICW and can’t say enough good things about Georgetown Landing Marina. They couldn’t do enough for us and helped us with restaurants and incidentals. We had no real experience docking in the presence of a strong current and they responded right away on Ch 16 and helped get us in. Each day that we went up and down the ICW they asked us where we were going and about when we’d expect to be back. Agree w/statements about their general orientation to sport fishing but it had no effect on the hospitality they showed us.

Isle of Palms Marina is located on the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway, northeast of Charleston at Mile 456.5 and south of ICW Marker 116. 50 41st Avenue Isle of Palms Marina is A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! and their lowered transient rate is certainly good news in this economy! Isle of Palms Marina lies along the South Carolina portion of the AICW, north of Charleston, and southwest of flashing marker #116, on the charted cove indenting the southerly shoreline

Isle of Palms Marina – always a great stop when coming back from Georgetown. Morgan Creek restaurant has only improved and now has outdoor dining, along with their full upstairs covered deck or indoor areas. The meals only get better every time we go! So much to do at IOP Marina – several rental places for wave runners, kayaks, or stand up paddle boards. The beach is a short bike ride away and facilities are in great shape.

    • Good Visit to Harborwalk Marina, Georgetown, SC, AICW Statute Mile 403

VHF 16 & 68 Located on the Sampit River, Harborwalk Marina is only a boardwalk away from Georgetown's Historic District, great food, shopping, etc. A safe harbor from bad weather and located in calm Harborwalk Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! is the northwesternmost marina on the downtown Georgetown/Sampit River waterfront.

Harborwalk Marina, Georgetown – had another great trip to Georgetown a month ago. The marina is in perfect condition, with incredible service (we arrived late and they waited for us and had three dock hands to assist with a an easy landing. Excellent facilities at this marina, in fact the cleanest restrooms and laundry I’ve found yet! New docks and a great view of downtown. We were amazed at the recently redone boardwalk all along the harborside. Did a lot of exploring of the Georgetown area on bike and had two great meals, one at Portofino and the other at our favorite Rice Paddy.

Off the North Edisto River in Bohicket Creek, Bohicket Marina Village is located three nautical miles upstream on Bohicket Creek’s southeastern banks, upstream of unlighted daybeacon #8.

Bohicket Marina, Johns Island (Seabrook/Kiawah) – this facility just keeps getting better. Reds Ice House, a great causal restaurant/bar opened up in the old Privateer location last year and they are off to a great start again this year. There are now bike paths from Bohicket all the way to Kiawah Island. The paths opened last year to Seabrook and Freshfields, which make for a great weekend get away. Freshfields has several restaurants, many shops and a great grocery, all within a walk or easy bike ride from the marina. Both Seabrook and Kiawah are great to ride through and their beaches are close by. Normally we go outside on this trip, but did take the ICW one-way thus far and it was fine the entire way.

This report refers to a section of the AICW north of the Ben Sawyer Bridge and is similar to earlier reports of shoaling in the vicinity of statute mile 450.

Also, just north of Ben Sawyer Bridge, Charleston harbor, there is some thin water around Breech Inlet. You must stay in the channel. There was a boat aground there yesterday, but I’ve been through there at dead low water and had 8 ft. or so.

Steamboat Creek cuts the southwestern banks of the North Edisto River, southeast of the ICW/Dawho River; anchorage lies northeast of the charted position of Steamboat Landing.

Just had a short voyage to Beaufort, SC with my yacht club, the Wild Dunes Yacht Club. Went offshore from Charleston and came in the N. Edisto River and traveled up it to Steamboat Creek. Very lovely place to anchor, plenty of water and a lot of swinging room.

    • Report on Depths in Watts Cut, AICW Statute Mile 503

Watts Cut is a straight, narrow AICW channel that connects the South Edisto River with the Dawho River south of Charleston.

On the way back, we came thru this area at dead low tide. I draw 5 ft. in a 42 ft. sail, we took it very slow through Watts Cut, just south of the Dawho R. Bridge. We favored the red side and found 8 ft. of water. After the bridge, we had plenty of water until we hit the last turn and it went to 7 ft. Again, dead low water.

This area of AICW shoaling and navigation alerts occurs southwest of marker #108 where the Waterway exits the Wadmalaw River into the Dawho River.

The USCG was spotting several new, green buoys in the area of markers 111-113 this morning as we transited the area. We never saw less than 10′ (at MLW datum).

Just had a short voyage to Beaufort, SC with my yacht club, the Wild Dunes Yacht Club. Went offshore from Charleston and came in the N. Edisto River and traveled up it to Steamboat Creek. We left the next morning and entered the ICW where the N. Edisto and Dawho Rivers meet. As usual, very thin water at the first two green markers, but after you make the turn, the water gets deeper and no problem from there on through the bridge. The tide was mid tide rising.

    • More Good Words for Osprey Marina, AICW Statute Mile 373

Osprey Marina , owned by Carson Benton, is at mile marker 373 on the Intracoastal Waterway in Myrtle Beach. Osprey Marina offers a protected harbor 150 yards off the waterway accessible by a private d Osprey Marina lies right where the Waterway leaves Pine Island Cut (a. k. a. “the Rock Pile”) and sweeps south into the beautiful Waccamaw River. Osprey Marina is A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

By the way, on a trip with friends to Georgetown on our boat from the Oak Island area, we stopped at several marinas (Obviously not in a hurry). Osprey Marina was a real treat on our way home. We arrived late, but had plenty of help from slip holders who couldn’t have been more friendly. Osprey mgmt left us a welcome bag, just as they said they would and we enjoyed our stay. One other point, their fuel was the cheapest on our entire trip and their charge per foot was much less than other marinas. Although we enjoyed each of the other marina’s where we stayed, Osprey was literally half the cost and offered first rate facilities. Thanks for the recommendation. We will be returning.
      Mike and Carolyn Hackett

We, too, very much enjoyed our few days at Osprey Marina on our way North in April. It is a beautiful harbor in a lovely spot off the Waccamaw River. One feature that your reviewer did not mention is that the Italian restaurant in a nearby shopping area will send a car to pick you up if you choose to dine with them. After dining, you can do your re-provisioning and then you will be driven back to the marina. Very convenient and thoughtful. We recommend Osprey!
      Maureen Nemecek

I totally agree with other favorable comments regarding Osprey; we stayed there in Nov. 2010 on the way South to Fl. and on our return trip. Prices are excellent and fair and the staff very helpful and friendly. What can I say, the owner is a Clemson man !!!

    • A Good Visit to Port Royal Landing Marina (Statute Mile 540)

Boaters are our business and our only business. We are located directly on the ICW, and offer Exceptional Lowcountry facilities and hospitality. The Beaufort/Port Royal area is a beautiful and histori Port Royal Landing Marina guards the western banks of the AICW/Beaufort River, a short hop south of downtown Beaufort, SC. This fine facility is a much valued SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!!!

First visit to Port Royal Landing Marina on Jun 5, 2011 was such a wonderful surprise. As we approach for our docking there are two staff members with smiling faces on the dock ready to assist. And they knew just what they were doing with the our lines. Once the boat was secured there were handshakes and introductions and a very warm welcome. All the facilities and the grounds were very clean and well maintained.
The marina has city water, portable pump-out system, Ship’s Store, 30/50 amp, cable TV, gas & diesel fuel, wireless Internet, floating docks, restrooms/showers/laundromat and a small restaurant/bar offering a 10% discount for overnight boaters. Other restaurants are nearby. Two courtesy vehicles are available. A Piggy-Wiggly grocery and a West Marine are about two miles away. (see comment below).
[The marina features a] comfortable boater’s lounge – well stocked book exchange and coffee and TV and a nice view of the water.
Current dockage rates are $1.60 ft plus electric for Loopers or BoatUS members.

I stay at the PRLM every time I’m down that way. It is a great Marina and it is about 3 miles past the Beaufort City Docks. Like the White’s have said they are always waiting for you on the docks to take your lines. They will even hook up your power and water. When was the last time a marina did that for you? • Praise for Charleston Harbor Marina (Charleston Harbor, near Mount Pleasant)

Seaside Luxury at its best It’s always such a pleasure to publish a glowing account of a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR. We agree that Charleston Harbor Marina is a first-rate facility in every way!

On May 10, 2011, `Hemisphere Dancer’ stopped at Charleston Harbor Marina at Patriots Point. Harbormaster, Capt. Stan Jones, was happy to receive us, assign us a convenient slip to the showers/head, and provide us with information regarding this Charleston Resort. The breakwater surrounding the marina provided smooth, comfortable slips during my two-day stay, which included an early morning thunderstorm (no charge). The floating docks have water & electricity and free wi-fi. The showers and bathrooms are tiled, laundry next to baths, ice is available on the main dock, and the `Ollie the Trolley’ shuttle van operates on the hour, free of charge, to downtown Charleston or Sullivan’s Island (i.e.Ft.Moultrie) from 10 am to 10 pm. Boaters have permission to use the Resort’s pool, spa, and restaurant for some very comfortable living. The restaurant features a private display of vintage, handcrafted, big game, fishing reels, two big TV’s to catch up on the latest weather or game, and free wi-fi. Attached to the Marina is Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum where for a small fee one may explore the USS Yorktown (CV-10), the submarine USS Clamagore (SS-343), a Destroyer USS Laffey (away in the yards), a Vietnam Support Base, Memorials, Gift Shop, and several movies documenting parts of WWII. Whew! I spent two days immersed in History! When I considered all of the services, luxuries, and activities available, I thought the marina transient fee of $2.00/foot was a bargain, and after receiving a Boat U.S. discount of 5%, I definitely plan to return.

    • Report on Fields Cut, AICW Statute Mile 575

Severe shoaling has shelved out from the southern and southeastern banks, just north of the Fields Cut/ICW’s intersection with Savannah River

Came thru this morning (April 8, 2011) and stayed closer to the green side, never saw less than 11 MLW. While this seems like great news, since the 7′ MLW hump at the north side is still there, you still have to play the tide if you draw 6′ +!

I came through Fields Cut today at dead low tide. Called TowBoatUS for advice which was spot on. When entering Fields from the south, hug the red side. Lots of water.
When in the cut, stay center. The lowest I saw was 7-8′. When exiting the north end favor just to the green side of center. Again 6-7′ of water.

We understand from other contributors that Leland Oil Company Marina, under a new owner, is steadily making improvements to this very affordable facility. We hear, too, that the owner will take time to drive you to nearby stores.
Note that if you have never visited the backwater village of McClellanville, SC before, you owe it to yourself to stop here, and at least take in the community. It’s like stepping into a time machine that transports you to what most of the Low Country must have looked like 50 years ago. Try it, you might just like it!

Had to duck in for a week because I ran out of time in getting the boat to Charleston and had to be back at work. I was too late to make the bridge. I’m writing now not as an editor, but as a Do-It-Yourself boatowner.

As a Charleston City Marina slipholder, I am pleased to report that our recent haulout, stay and launch at the Charleston City Boatyard was a thoroughly pleasant experience – if bottom painting can ever be pleasant? Not only were we treated with respect as DIYers, but the service was prompt, friendly and professional. All charges were exactly as quoted. The City Boatyard is located on the Wando River north of the Charleston Harbor . Follow the Wando River and the Boatyard will be on north side of the river, past the Don Holt Bridge (I-526) at Marker #40 immediately before of the Highway 41 bridge.

Have had Elixir– 34′ PDQ- hauled at Charleston City Boatyard for bottom paint and some maintenance that I do not feel comfortable doing myself. Was a very good experience! They even suggested different methods of work that would save me money!!! I had a problem with a coolant leek on port engine– sent a very knowledgeable mechanic immediately to correct the problem. I think I paid a premium price, but the attitude, competence and follow up is very worth it. I had gotten another quote for another yard, but they never replied to 3 follow-up emails that I sent with some questions re the work. I’ll be back there [City Boatyard] for future work!!
