Is a Historic El Niño Likely?

NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC) in their October updated ENSO Diagnostic discussion confirmed that the current El Niño has been intensifying into what could become a historic climate event. In their advisory, the CPC notes that reaching a 3-month temperature anomaly of +2.5°C or higher would exceed the strength of all previous major El Niño events dating back to 1950.
