Museum of Fine Arts – ABOVE THE FOLD: NEW EXPRESSIONS IN ORIGAMI

      $14 for GEMS Members

Origami (“paper folding”), has evolved from a Japanese craft and ceremonial tradition into a highly expressive, global art form that even has scientific applications. Today, artists from all over the world are folding paper into increasingly elaborate and provocative sculptural works, while scientists and mathematicians are using origami to help unlock the mysteries of the universe.

Above the Fold demonstrates the extraordinary power and potential of contemporary origami. Paper is transformed into breathtaking sculpture, large-scale installations and conceptual works that express contemporary social, political, and aesthetic ideas. Visionary master folders—such as Erik Demaine and Martin Demaine (Canada/USA), Vincent Floderer (France), Miri Golan (Israel), Paul Jackson (UK/Israel), Dr. Robert J. Lang (USA), Sipho Mabona (Switzerland/South Africa), Yuko Nishimura (Japan), and Richard Sweeney (UK)—push the boundaries of paper as a medium for creating bold and sophisticated works. The exhibition celebrates these artists who are redefining a traditional Japanese craft as a modern global genre and inventing unexpected forms of artistic expression.

Above the Fold is curated by Meher McArthur and tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

Senior Center registration required. however, there is no need to be a GEMS member to enjoy these exciting Gulfport Getaways. Call 727-8943-2242 for more information and to reserve your seat. Trips are non-refundable and subject to change without notice.

Join the Gulfport Historical Society as they take a stroll through history in Gulfport. The tour examines the creation of this small seaside hamlet; the tour guides, all Gulfport locals with a penchant for history and storytelling, share the town’s history and stories with the group. The tour starts at the Gulfport History Museum where you can take a peek at some of their historic photos.

Please note that this event is on our “summer schedule”, from May through September, we’ll be offering walking tours every third Thursday at 7 pm.

Tour free for Gulfport Historical Society members. All others pay $10 per person. Tickets can be purchased at www.gulfporthistoricalsociety.org. We have a water cooler at the museum; please bring your refillable bottle to fill up before the tour.

These tours sell out, so advance ticket purchase is highly suggested. Members should pre-register to ensure they have a spot. We don’t love turning people away, but when the group gets too large it’s hard for everyone to hear our tour guides.

Oscar Wilde in “THE HAPPY PRINCE” NEXT IN LGBTQ FILM SERIES
      Thursday, September 12th

The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, September 12 with a portrayal of Oscar Wilde in THE HAPPY PRINCE. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month.

Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center. Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages. Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About THE HAPPY PRINCE (2018): Oscar Wilde lies on his deathbed and recalls his past with wit and irony. Was he once the most famous man in London? He reviews the failed attempt to reconcile with his long-suffering wife, the ensuing reprisal of his love affair with Lord Alfred Douglas and the devotion of Robbie Ross, who tried and failed to save him from himself. From Dieppe to Naples to Paris, Oscar is a penniless vagabond, shunned by his old acquaintances, but still revered by a strange group of outlaws to whom he tells the old stories – his incomparable talent still sharp. Starring Rupert Everett and Colin Firth. “A resounding and artistic film.” (El Pais) (Rated R; adults only suggested)

The LGBTQ Resource Center of the Gulfport Public Library is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Resource Center provides collections, services and events throughout the year to the local LGBTQ community, its friends and family. Find out more about the Resource Center and the Library on the web at www.mygulfport.us/lgbtq-resources or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL. Or contact the LGBTQ Resource Center by email to LGBTQGulfport@gmail.com.

      Get the City App

City of Gulfport is proud to announce the launch of the new City of Gulfport app for iOS and Android mobile devices, the newest way to connect with its citizens.

The Official City of Gulfport app offers citizens a simple way to submit requests-like reporting potholes, signs, trash or debris, code violations, and inquiring about an event venue. Users can include an address and description, GPS-specific location, as well as a photo of the issue. Once a request is submitted, you can keep track of pending and completed requests within the “My Requests” section. In addition, the City app has direct links to the online utility bill payment system, the City calendar, frequently asked questions, the city employee directory, the sanitation department, and the electronic newsletter signup.

The City App allows residents to connect more conveniently with City government to report issues and request non-emergency services. Offering more ways for citizens to connect with the City, please email info@mygulfport.us or call 727-893-1118 with questions or technical issues about the smart phone app.
