Lockwoods Folly Tale
Cruisers often wonder how the inlet, river, and surrounding lands acquired the unique name of Lockwoods Folly. It seems that a Mr. Lockwood lived near the inlet many years ago. He decided to build his dream boat on the nearby river. Though no definite information is available on the craft, the times would seem to dictate that it was a sailing vessel of some sort. Tradition claims that the ship was made of the finest materials and that Lockwood looked forward to many years of reliable service.
Much to his dismay, Lockwood discovered that he had built the boat with too deep a draft to clear the inlet’s outer bar. Whether from a broken heart or a broken pocketbook, he left his dream boat to rot in the river. The old derelict came to be called Lockwood’s Folly.
