Claiborne –
We just departed our favorite Hilton Head Island stop – Palmetto Bay marina. This is the best marina to access the central section of Hilton Head. Most stores, supplies and restaurants are within biking distance on the bike trail or just off the trail. Cruisers will find all their regular stores nearby: Publix, Starbucks, Panera, Fresh Market, etc. AND – the great Jazz Corner, one of the few small jazz clubs left in the country, serving excellent music and food every night.
Palmetto Bay is less “upscale” than the other marinas on HH, and that’s what we like. Dockhands are friendly, great Sunrise Café for breakfast (6 am!) and lunch. Bathrooms and shower are shared with other marina and restaurant clientele, so shower timing is important.
The very friendly Yacht Club of Hilton Head is on this property (no docks), and we have joined in their Friday dinner activities on previous stops here. These YC members are very proud that their club staffed the Olympics sailing races several years ago when the Savannah YC turned down the opportunity.

Everything about this marina has changed. All new inexperienced staff. Captain Woody’s has relocated, but the Black Marlin is as good as ever. Docks are being populated by “Derelict boats” being brought in by the management and rented to a non-boating clientele as housing. Used this marina for years, unfortunately it’s become necessary to bypass it for Shelter Cove Marina a mile beyond.
If you’re willing to go a few miles off the ICW, you can visit Palmetto Bay marina on Broad Creek. If you have a deep draft vessel, DO NOT try to cut across the sandbar at G29A. Local power boats do this, but it’s strictly “local knowledge”. The safe passage is go around Green 1 marking Calibogue shoal and enter the mouth of Broad Creek. This will lead you upstream to Palmetto Bay marina on the starboard side, just before you reach the bridge.
The attraction for traveling cruisers isn’t the marina ( although yes, it’s nice ) but that it’s co-located with a local shopping center. There are multiple restaurants and shops, making for a pleasant stop over and a night out.

Stayed here for three months (Dec 2012 – Mar 2013). Inside docks are comfortable and location is fairly protected in three directions. Dockmaster is friendly and attentive. Laundry faciities (one washer and dryer) & shower (1) is located in restaurant area (fairly private early in am).
Had an excellent experience getting routine mechanical maintenance (adjusting Yanmar 3JH3E valves , adjusting idle speed, and checking hoses/belts) with Palmetto Bay Yacht Services. They are on site & efficiently performed requested work without looking for additional tasks. I would recommend their service.
Hi, we stayed here in mid November 2009 and found the place as described in other comments. I should have asked, however, after spending the summer in Maine and New England I was not used to paying $20.00 for a pumpout.
We spend a month or two right before and after hurricane season in Hilton Head. We love it. We keep a car in storage there. All the marinas are nice but we stay in Palmetto Bay Marina and love the marina and the surrounding area. A word of caution, boaters share the heads with several bars and restaurants. We use the facilities on our boat so we are OK with that arrangement. At the foot of the docks is Woody’s Bar and Grill, the Black Marlin and the Tiki Bar. And of course Glitzy’s for carry out food and beverage. The Sunrise Cafe may have the best breakfast we have had anywhere. All that in the complex at the foot of the marina. No car is needed.

If you want some nightlife, stay at Palmetto Bay Marina on the way up the creek. There is a good restaurant there, Black Marlin, a decent outdoor tiki bar, and a more typical restaurant with lots of fried food along with other tourist delights. Docks are newer, but not the best. Parallel parking, no slips. People are friendly though and they have fuel.
