8/28/17 – 8/31/17 The marina has got to be one of the worst maintained marina’s in the country. The place is falling apart. No power, no lights, no railings, etc, etc. at the west marina, so we had to get a hotel. Across from our slip, a 20 foot end section of a concrete floating dock broke away while we were there. Boats were on it. It was still swinging around a piling when we left. Bare metal bolts exposed on the side of the floating docks, thank goodness our fenders were out before we got to the slip. We had to get a hotel room because no working power and debris was so prevalent that our generator intake required constant clearing. Power pedestals laying down or half way in the water on both the east and west marinas. The east marina is slightly better than the west marina, but you’ll need to search around for a power pedestal without burned out receptacles, bring plenty of power cord. The tripping hazards, holes in the dock walkways, and missing docks, submerged docks, at the west dock are too numerous to mention. The dockmaster, Nat, was a nice kind gentleman, always saying he wanted to help. Cutting deals to get you to stay while waiting the weather out instead leaving. Made promises of returning dock fees if weather broke and we left early, but of course when the weather broke and we left two days early, he was quick to say they had a policy of not returning any prepaid fees as he pointed to the sign and said he was happy to help with anything we needed. The overnight rate is $1.00 per foot, while that sounds good, it is overpriced because the place is so dangerous. When you add in the hotel rooms, it’s not so cheap. You must really be careful walking around the docks, etc. We were only there by chance as it is the only marina between two large sounds on the ICW and needed a place to leave our boat for a few days until the weather got better. I was there about 10 to 12 years ago under similar circumstances, it was horrible then too. St. Mary’s is a nice little town, we had some great meals there this week. People are very nice. It continues to puzzle me and many others why the marina owners do not reinvest in this marina asset. We were in St. Mary’s at the end of Jan. We always stay at Lang’s which has sturdy floating concrete docks. Play the tides for easier docking in strong current but no trouble getting on face docks at Lang’s East. Some of the electric pedestals are broken and my feet never touch the floor in the bathroom, but the price is very reasonable. Everyone is friendly and the town is pleasant. Lang’s Restaurant is a great place to dine. Don’t miss the all you can eat shrimp. Steve Young SV CrossRoads
This is a very basic marina.No frills, poor head facilities, some power pedestals are not working, docks are dirty but substantial. Nate Wilson the dock master does the best he can with what he has to work with. A very nice and accommodating guy and willing to do what he can to make your stay pleasant. Given a choice we would not stay there but we need to as we have family in the area and stop once or twice a year. They do get full in the fall and reservations are discouraged at any time. St. Mary’s is a little gem with super friendly people and good food. Doc’s was a cool place with live jazz one night. My wife liked the martini bar at Seagle’s. Lang’s Marina was a great bargain at $1.00 per foot, docks were in great shape with very helpful folks who were tied up there. On the down side, the marina bathrooms appeared to have last been cleaned several months earlier. Also, the $15 price for pump out was over the top and had to be paid in cash directly to the marina dockmaster. Hmmm.
If you need fuel, stop at the very first commercial dock, with the blue building “Lang’s Marina” sign behind it. Turn in to the inside dock, where a sign says “pump out station,” and that is the fuel dock. Took me half an hour to find it, as it is no where near the slips, and there was no response when I hailed channel 16. $2.79/gal for diesel. I did not stay at the marina.
Two nights tied up on the East Side’s facedock. The docks were in a very good state of repair, except for the electricity/water towers, and most of the boaters were courteous as they passed by. Nat Wilson can be difficult to find, use the phone number, may go to Restaurant first, so be ready to right down another number! I think it was good value, and close to downtown worked fine. Otherwise, agree with more of what was said about access to other services, but I knew that going on,.
Oct 6, 2009 St Marys is indeed a quaint little village with several interesting sites within walking distance. The Submarine museum, City museum, Orange Hall Mansion, old churches and houses were very interesting and educational but no grocery store or other supplies near by. The East Lang’s Marina just beyond marker 13 provided a pleasent stay. the Dock Master, Nat Wilson was helpful, courteous and interesting to talk with. The general condition of the marina was on the low side of average, but the price of $1 per foot is hard to beat. The City was clean and the people friendly Dutch & Janie Haid Aqua Casa, Daytona Beach. FL
In April 2008 we started at St Marys. This is a neat little village with some good eateries right near Langs where we tied up. The ferry to Cumberland departs from Langs. Amazingly, there is no grocery store in this town within walking distance of the marina. We stayed at the Spencer House, a wonderful taste of the old South an easy walk from the marina. There is a good boat yard around the corner a couple of miles northeast of St Marys. Best regards, Woody Norwood
M/V CJ (44 Viking) stayed at Lang’s Marina East and found the docks in a state of disrepair and the shore side facilities less than adequate. Heads were not air conditioned and are in need of improvements. Only advantage to staying there was the close distance to the town. Claire Monroe
Another of our favorite local destinations is St Mary’s. The passage up the St Mary’s River is pretty uneventful, but there are some shoals in the bends, so stay in the marked channel. The old Gilman paper mill is now completely demolished to make way for residential development. We always stay at Lang’s Marina, but note that there are two Lang’s Marina’s. Lang’s East is the newer facility, and where most of the transient boats are docked. It is small and has room for only a few boats, but we usually always can get in. They have concrete floating docks with power & water. A few of the power pedestals have seen better days, so you might have to drag out a spare shore power cord and a splitter. Lang’s West is the older marina, but has floating docks, of which about 50% were replaced after a bad storm a few years ago. The shore facilities at the East Marina are limited to a pair of showers & restrooms, and fuel, and pretty much nothing at the West Marina. There is an nice, elderly gentleman named Nat who is the dockmaster. He sometimes answers the radio, so we usually just call them on the phone (912) 882-4452. The office hours are somewhat limited, so if you don’t raise anyone, just dock, wait an hour or so or until the next morning (if arriving after 5pm) and go to the office at the East marina. They do not take slip reservations. Note that the current can rip through here, so be prepared. As far as food goes, you will be impressed. At the main road intersection between the two marinas, there is a small Italian restaurant, Pauly’s Cafe (912) 882-3944, that seats about 20 people. It is excellent and very reasonably priced. Further north on the same side of Osborne Rd is Marianne’s (912) 882-3430. Marianne Thomas used to operate as Sterling’s Southern Cafe, but moved to a larger place across the street, and since it was not in the old Sterling’s Grocery Store anymore, I guess she decided to change the name. Anyway, another fabulous place. On the waterfront street (St Mary’s St) , Lang’s Marina Restaurant (912) 882-4432 is at the foot of the West Marina dock, and is also a great choice. Also on St Mary’s St is the Riverside Cafe. We eat breakfast and lunch there every time we are in town, enough said. Seagles Restaurant (912) 882-4187 in the hotel has reopened, but we have not eaten there yet. Trolley’s is a sports bar and restaurant, and the food is so-so. We recently stayed at Lang’s Marina in St. Mary’s, Ga. This is the only marina in St. Mary’s.? The small town is quite quaint and interesting. The rate was .75 pf weekly and 1.00 pf daily.? We stayed for 10 days since Ben was doing work on the boat. We had water & electric.? No other amenities.? The Harbor Master, Nate is most helpful. We were able to off load the motorcycle which allowed us to get groceries and Ben was able to get the parts he needed. You can walk to several restaurants, but it is too far to get much of anything else without transportation. The town is wonderful to explore with 2 VERY nice museums one on the Cumberland Island (which is a must stop on the ICW on Cumberland Island we anchored out and took the dingy in and went on a very informative tour given by the National Park Service ) and the other museum is on the seaport hay day of St. Mary’s.? This little town is one that time has almost forgotten. We were eating on the balcony of a local restaurant and when we saw 2 cars on the street at the same time Ben said, they had a traffic jam! There are more golf carts then cars. They have a BEAUTIFUL waterfront park. The best thing was buying shrimp right off the shrimp boats as they came in! In the 10 days we were there we bought over 15 pounds of shrimp and even bought enough stone crabs for a wonderful Sunday lunch! We recommend Lang’s Seafood Restaurant. Hello All: Monday 3-16-09 Palmetto Moon, Jim, Su, and Alex (the lazy cat) spent 3 great days Fri. – Sun. in Lang’s Marina 5.3 miles up the St. Mary’s river, exit ICW at MM 712.3 Good floating docks (1.00/ft), city H2O, nice tourist attractions and GOOD restaurants. You must try Pauly’s, very small and fantastic food and inexpensive. This stop is worth the out of route miles. As always YMMV. Jim Cobb Palmetto Moon
We stayed over night at marina and found it to be a place to rest for the night. The bathrooms were just ok (showers needed cleaning) and it was hard to locate dock master or anyone to discuss docking. The town was cool because it was so small and we were able to stop at all the local watering holes. We cruised inland up the St Mary’s and found it to have good depth worth taking a ride to see the large bluffs
