    • [EXPIRED] NAV ALERT: Partially Submerged Hazard with Photo, AICW/N Santee River Intersection, SC Statute Mile 422

Our thanks to Looper Jim Healy for this photo and for posting this MSIB in AGLCA’s Forum.

HAZARD TO NAVIGATION – SOUTH CAROLINA – NORTH SANTEE RIVER
Sanctuary and crew transited from Charleston to Socastee yesterday (6/3/2020). THE USCG is broadcasting an LNM announcing a “Hazard to Navigation” located in mid-channel at the North Santee River. The give a lat/lon, which is correct, but Northbound, the hazard is at the South entrance to the N. Santee River. That hazard is definitely there. It’s a huge tree stump (Cypress root/tree trunk?). It is mid-channel in a rather narrow place. We came through at low tide, and the stump was clearly visible. It’s in 12 feet of water, and at low tide, about 3 feet of root parts are visible. At high tide in that area, it WOULD NOT be visible.

So I called the Coast Guard and told them that, and told them the stump is located about 150 feet South of Marker Red 18. Geniuses that they are (sorry, I am not a fan of the radio watch standers), they added the 150 feet south of Red 18 to the LNM, but they did not catch the part that the stump might not be visible at high tide. The channel is narrow there, but favor red to miss that thing. It is definitely big enough to hurt a boat.
      Jim Healy

If so gonna mean a lot of Masonboro to Beaufort sailboats!
Need to get the real skinny in this ASAP.
Even a 50’ horizontal clearance is tight.

Wow. Huge impact at 60 ft!

Are they saying 60’ vertical clearance all the time and 50’ horizontal when they’re working? Huge impact if so.
