      This shoaling is off the southern tip of Anclote Key where two other Nav Alerts have been posted in the past. The relocation of the nav aids is good news.

      Due to shoaling the following Aids to Navigation have been temporarily established and changed:
      -Anclote Anchorage South Entrance Daybeacon 5 (LLNR 26085 [28°8.7176N / 082°50.4298W, 28.145294 / -82.840496]) temporarily converted into a DANGER SHOAL Daybeacon A
      -Relocated TRUB 5 to position 28-08-43.057N / 082-50-25.787W (28°8.7176N / 082°50.4298W, 28.145294 / -82.840496)
      -Temporarily established Anclote Anchorage South Entrance Buoy 5A in position 28-09-01.288N / 082-50-12.673W (28°9.0215N / 082°50.2112W, 28.150358 / -82.836854)
      -Anclote Anchorage South Entrance Daybeacon 6 (LLNR 26095 [28°9.2470N / 082°50.2253W, 28.154116 / -82.837089]) temporarily converted into a DANGER SHOAL Daybeacon B

      Great little marina off the beaten path. Location is right in the downtown of Washington NC. For a small town there is a lot of activity at the waterfront, early morning walkers, a picnic lunch crowd, and evening family strollers. Marina/waterfront park staff are all nice and helpful.
      We sailed a boat with 66ft mast and 6.5ft draft without issue coming in from the Atlantic at Morehead City and then taking the Core Creek stretch of the ICW. Hit bridges at low tide and you are good.

      For several years Cruisers’ Net has had reports of shallow water encountered near the eastern end of the Waterway’s passage through South Carolina’s Dawho River between the North and South Edisto Rivers. Our thanks to authors Bob and Ann Sherer for sharing their observations on the erroneous magenta line in this section. The Sherers have just released the 2017 edition of their ICW Cruising Guide, see /166170.

      Hi Larry,
      I wrote an article about a 5.5 MLW route through the shallows of the east entrance into the Dawho River, a notoriously shallow area of the ICW south of Charleston. It’s also where the magenta line can lead you astray as far as finding the deepest water. The article might be of interest to your readers so I’ve included a link if you think that’s the best way of presenting the information.

        I assume you are coming from the Gulf of Mexico
        Bridges – no problem, draft – tricky in narrow channel upstream of Ft Myers.
        Call Owl Creek for info on deepest route from Okee Waterway into their facility.
        But why do you want to go so far inland, there are excellent haulout marinas in Ft Myers Beach

    • Action Alert on E15 Marine Fuel from Boating United

      In the past, boating groups and the marine industry have railed against adding more ethanol to marine fuel. Evidently, newer engines can now cope with E10 but not E15. Older gasoline engines must still search for non-ethanol fuels which are available at almost all gas stations in South Carolina; but for how long? Remember the old “leaded” versus “non-leaded” fuels?

      Action Alert
      EPA is soliciting public comments on their proposed rule regarding renewable fuel levels for 2018.  Now is your chance to let them know that boaters need access to ethanol free and E10 gasoline-and not more E15.

      Under EPA’s proposal for next year, the availability of ethanol free and E10 gasoline continues to be in jeopardy. Meanwhile, the availability of E15 will continue to grow, jeopardizing boats and boat engines across the country.

      Boaters need to be able to fill their boat with the fuel of their choice.

      EPA is accepting comments through August 31st.

      Act now and tell EPA that you want continued access to ethanol free and E10 gasoline
      .

    • Dismal Swamp Canal to Re-Open by End of September, AICW Alternate Route

      Dismal Swamp Canal to reopen in September

      NORFOLK, Va. – The Dismal Swamp Canal is scheduled to reopen to vessel traffic by the end of September, with the Lake Drummond Reservation and Feeder Ditch opening to canoes and kayaks on August 18, officials said.

      Crews continue to dredge the canal, which officials at the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed due to extensive damage from Hurricane Matthew in October.

      “In the history of the canal, we’ve never had this issue, and we’re using every available resource to make the canal safe again for vessels,” said Joel Scussel, Norfolk District Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway project manager.

      Engineers completed a survey of the Dismal Swamp Canal in March after crews had finished clearing more than 350 trees from the canal.

      That survey, along with another survey in July, revealed controlling depths less than the normal 6 feet: engineers plotted the Deep Creek Channel at 4.8 feet, Tuners Cut was less than 2.5 feet and the Feeder Ditch was shoaled in at a depth of approximately 1 foot.

      The crew of Wilmington District’s Dredge Murden completed dredging in the Deep Creek Channel on June 21. After-dredge surveys showed a controlling depth of 6 feet, which allowed officials to reopen the channel to navigation. The Dredge Murden will return at the end of August to complete clean-up adjacent to the Deep Creek Lock.

      Feeder Ditch dredging resumes today. The crane crew will dredge 1,500 cubic yards of material to reopen the Feeder Ditch to a depth of 6 feet, 25 feet wide by then end of August.

      When crews complete work at the Feeder Ditch, they will return to Turners Cut to complete work that was suspended after the quality of dredged material at Turners Cut did not meet the standards for beneficial reuse. Officials coordinated with the state of North Carolina while a new dredging method was arranged that met state water quality standards.

      Engineers are also working on a design for emergency generators for the Deep Creek and South Mills Locks, which were inoperable after the hurricane.

      Deep Creek Lock Gate rehabilitation work, which was scheduled before Hurricane Matthew struck, is complete: the gates were reinstalled on July 19 and operating the next day.

      When the post-hurricane dredging operations began in the canal, officials aimed to reopen the waterway before October, when perennial “snowbirds” use the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to travel south, bound for the Bahamas and Florida ports of call.

      “Since the hurricane, our goal has been to reopen the canal to navigation as soon as possible,” Scussel said.
