[EXPIRED] Porch Party! Gulfport Historical Society, City of Gulfport, Fl, Boca Ciega Bay
Despite the tragic fire in 2018 at the Gulfport History Museum, the Society continues its educational activities for the City of Gulfport, which always has a full calendar of events for all ages and is home to Gulfport Municipal Marina, A CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, located on the northern shores of Boca Ciega Bay, easily accessible from the Western Florida ICW, just north of Tampa Bay.

No, our porch isn’t rebuilt yet. That doesn’t mean we can’t have a porch party!
Please join us Friday night for our first porch party since the Labor Day fire. While the museum isn’t open yet — seriously, we still don’t have a porch — the city of Gulfport has graciously agreed to loan us Scout Hall for the evening’s fun.
And what an evening it will be! We’re over-the-moon excited to bring Dave Scheidecker, an historical archaeologist with the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office, to Gulfport to talk about the history of the Seminole Tribe and Egmont Key.
While Egmont is known for its historic lighthouse, secluded beaches and the ruins of the Spanish-American Naval Base, Fort Dade, it played a prominent role in the history of the Seminole Wars, when the island was turned into a prison for hundreds of captured Seminole people before they were taken to “Indian Territory” in Oklahoma. Now the small island’s history is at risk as changes in the climate and the surrounding environment erode it away.
As always, our porch parties are free to everyone, and this is one you don’t want to miss!
On Saturday, January 19, Mr. Scheidecker will lead a trip to Egmont Key to explore the historical site. For more information, or to reserve your ticket, take a look at the event on Facebook. Note: when we sent this we had one ticket left!
Now, about that trip — we have held out a few tickets in case of any issues, and so far none have arisen, so if you didn’t get one online, we’ll raffle them off at the porch party. Raffle tickets for the boat ride will be free for members and $5 for nonmembers, but you must be at the porch party to get a ticket — and to claim your boat ride!
The boat trip will leave from the Fort DeSoto boat ramp Saturday morning. Please be at the boat ramp at 9 a.m. for check-in!
Also, because of the boat trip, we will have no walking tour this Saturday afternoon. We’ll return in February!
We open the doors at 6:30 p.m.; the talk will start at 7 p.m. As always, pets are welcome. Scout Hall is right next to the museum (5315 28th Ave. S.).
In other news, just this week we’ve switched over to a membership management system called Wild Apricot, on the advice of Preserve the ‘Burg. We want to thank them, but we also need to thank our existing members, who have been kind and patient as we migrated all the membership information over to the new system and set up banking information. All systems are go now, so if it’s time to renew, or if you’ve decided you want to support us by joining, now’s the time — here’s the link to join!
