I purchased my first sailboat. Yay! I will be moving her from the Chesapeake to Florida. I am going the inside route Virgina Cut or Dismal Canal in the beginning. Wanted your opinion. I've read a lot about the Dismal and would really like to take that route because of the beauty. Concerned about my draft and height. 52 feet long, 5.3 draft with a mast 63.5 feet.
I'm new to the East Coast and I'm moving a 30' sailboat (3' draft with board up) next week from Topping, VA to it's new home in Oriental, NC. I've read about some issues with duckweed in the canal, but can't get any updates as to how it looks at this time.

I spoke with Sarah Hill, director of Dismal Swamp Welcome Center, and she said that the canal is essentially duckweed free.
With your shallow board-up draft, you should slide right through. If this is your first transit of the canal in a sailboat, be sure to keep an eye on overhanging branches.
Be sure to stop at the Welcome Center and speak with Sarah Hill. It’s a very nice stop.

I have a 52' long 14.5' beam shallow draft 27" boat. I don't want to take it out into the ocean. Should I take the Chesapeake & Albemarle canal or the dismal swamp canal? Are there locks on either or both?
Be advised that Whitaker Creek Channel in Oriental, NC has been dredged to 7 – 8 feet as of last month and is not longer the problem it once was..
