Gilmerton Highway Bridge crosses the Waterway just south of Norfolk and has been the subject of much attention since the construction and resulting number of closures began last fall. Cruisers’ Net has had a Navigation Alert posted for this area for several months.

VA ‘“ ATLANTIC INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY (AIWW) ‘“ ELIZABETH RIVER (SOUTHERN BRANCH) TO THE ALBERMARLE AND CHESAPEAKE CANAL
Mariners are advised that installation work continues at the new Gilmerton (US13/460) Bridge, at AIWW mile 5.8, across the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in Chesapeake VA. To facilitate the work, the draw span will be closed to vessels requiring an opening each night, from 8 pm to 5 am, beginning on Sunday, February 17, 2013 to Friday, February 22, 2013. Only emergency openings will be provided with a 3-hour advance notice by contacting the bridge tender at 757-485-5488. The available vertical clearance in the closed position to vessels is approximately 35 feet above mean high water. At all other times, the drawbridge will operate in accordance with 33 CFR 117.997(j). Mariners able to pass under the closed span may do so at anytime and should use extreme caution when transiting the area. Mariners requiring a bridge opening should adjust their transits accordingly.
