    • Pleasant Visit to Jekyll Harbor Marina, AICW Statute Mile 684.5

Jeykyll Harbor Marina... a Cool Place to Beat the Heat Jekyll Harbor Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!, is on the east side of the Waterway, just south of the 65 foot Jekyll Island Bridge. For those of us who remember when Jekyll was accessible only by boat, there will always be a certain mystery about this historic island. Don’t miss the on-site Sea Jays restaurant at this facility. They do a “Low Country Boil” which makes for some truly fine eating!

The staff and manager couldn’t be more helpful. The concrete face dock parallels the current so, making arrival and departure much easier. We enjoyed being a short bike ride from the historic district and spent several days exploring the island.

Here’s an update since we decided to stay for a while rather than push on. Jessie, the new dock master, is busy with lots of maintenance and upgrade projects: replacing the wooden walkway to the floating docks, more powerful WiFi with repeaters to push the signal below decks, revamping the showers, and generally putting things in tip-top condition. They’ve started a boaters reward program with coupons for free laundry tokens, discounts on dockage, free bicycle use. No hassle to join, just give them your email or even just the boat’s name. Friendly community of cruisers, many of whom return year after year. There’s often an impromptu party on the dock around sundown that may then migrate to Sea Jay’s to listen to the live music.

    • High Praise for Crew and Service at Thunderbolt Marine, AICW Statute Mile 583

Thunderbolt Marine is a full service yacht repair and refit facility and marina located on the Waterway at Marker #35 just outside the city limits of Savannah. Good people skills, good contacts and good technical skills make for an excellent boatyard. Thunderbolt Marine proves those skills as Mike will attest.

We purchased a classic motorsailor in Southern Georgia and had intended to motor her north. Unfortunately mechanical problems cut that plan short. The folks at Thunderbolt Marine were great. Ernie coordinated unstepping the masts, putting us in contact with a trucker and hauled the boat. Less than 30 hours after making the decision to truck the boat we were on our way. As a bonus the bill was significantly less that the estimate due to things going smoothly. I can’t say enough about the way we were treated. Anthony at the marina was great, the complementary morning paper and Krispy Kreme donuts made a nice start to the day.

    • More Good Words for Isle of Hope Marina (AICW Statute Mile 590)

Located directly on the Intracoastal Waterway, Skidaway River at Mile 590, Marker 46-A, Latitude: N 31o 58.78' , Longitude: W 081o 03.35' 2-354-8187 As one of the best smaller marinas in the Southeastern USA, Isle of Hope Marina continues to draw raves from cruisers. We heartily recommend a stay here. Tell Charlie we sent you. Located just south of Savannah, Isle of Hope Marina is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

Isle of Hope Marine is truly a gem along the waterway. You are not a guest there, you are treated like a local. I can’t imagine what the staff could do to be more accommodating. Swimming at the community pool, showers, laundry, and courtesy car. There is a nice Pavilion at the top of the dock and if your lucky there will be something going on. We were lucky enough to be there for the benefit for the community pool. Live music, food and dancing all while a huge thunderstorm raged outside the confines of the pavilion, We will be stopping here again.

Captain Owen survived “the worst stretch on the AICW” at low tide! I would wish such good luck on all who transit these waters.

Crossed Little Mud River cut at mlw, drawing 5′. Would not recommend it, though I made it creating a new soft channel, spotting 2 alligators and a manatee.

Not only will you find good dockage here, but some superb food as well!!! A functioning chartplotter would make the upstream passage far easier, as there is very little in the way of aids to navigation along the way.
And, Sunbury is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!!!!

Were there late April. Interesting stop, pretty journey, about 6 mile side trip on naturally historic deep river. Nice people ,family operation, readily volunteered to fix a nice meal for us and another boat from North Carolina that had been there several times before on a day they were closed, floating face dock with fuel, did not go into the town but did not have the impression, much there. Seems to be one of those places few travelers know about but once people go there and enjoy develop a loyalty exists.due to friendly family service oriented atmosphere.

We were there this past Saturday night. Current runs fast on the long face dock. The band was great, dancing was fun and the blue crabs were delicious. Once a rival of Savannah as a sea port, the town is now officially listed by the state as a “dead city.”

    • AICW Passage Through The Skidaway Narrows Bridge to be Unaffected by Construction (Statute Mile 592.5)

Contrary to what Captain Judy has heard, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the AICW at Skidaway Narrows Bridge on Hwy. 204 will NOT be closed during the initial engineering phases – beginning this month – of an upcoming construction project to build a fixed 65′ bridge across the AICW on site. The completion date of the new bridge is 2 or 3 years away and may require brief closures at some point, but nothing in the near future.

Subject: Skidaway narrows bridge and waterway closure
Cruising News: We have heard that Skidaway bridge and ICW waterway there will be closed on June 2 while they survey for new bridge pilings. Would appreciate info on this.

    • Good Words for Kilkenny Marina (Statute Mile 614)

About a mile off the ICW, Kilkenny Marina has one of the prettiest locations on the east coast. Under huge ancient oak trees, the marina sits on a bluff over looking a deep channel and beautiful, solitary Georgia marshes in a timeless setting.

Especially nice were the people at the Kilkenny marina and the restaurant there was very welcoming. Made the sunset bridge for the 3 :00 opening and then it shut down for the day.
Keep up the good work. Next time we will take the time to really enjoy the trip.

    • New Anchorage on Kilkenny Creek, off AICW Statute Mile 614

Wow, this is news to yours truly. We have never explored Kilkenny Creek past the marina. You can be we’ll be adding this anchorage to the Net’s “Georgia Anchorage Directory” SOON!

On this trip a day or 2 earlier, let me tell you of another anchorage that is probably the best place I had on the trip. About Mile 613.5, Kilkenny Creek. Favor the Stbd side at the entrance (15ft or so), then middle to Stbd the rest of the way in. Go about 2 miles. You will pass Lincoln Creek on the left (also good, saw one 40ft tug anchored just in that creek), go past the Kilkenny Creek marina, just after the turn to the right, anchor in about 11-15 ft of water, near N 31.47.520 W081.11.911. Plenty of swing room. I was boat number 3 that night and what a restful night it was. Was warned of Shrimp boat traffic, but I don’t recall anybody going by all night. Just make sure your anchor light is visible. There is a seafood restaurant just north of the marina with a dock. Hours until 2130 I believe.
      Chris

We haven’t been to the marina in years but there wa nothing to recommend it then. the anchorage described is excellent though.

    • Thunderbolt Marine (Statute Mile 583)

Thunderbolt Marine is a good stop, and nearby Tubby’s Tank House restaurant has become something of a minor legend up and down the Waterway. Also consider Isle of Hope Marina, just a bit farther to the south. This latter facility is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

We have stopped here on a couple of occasions. In May 2008 we stopped and while there celebrated our anniversary at Tubby’s Tank House. A great experience.
Because of predicted nasty weather, we stopped again for three days in 2009 (11/30-12/2/09). The facilites again were very good as were the Krispy Kreme donuts.
We have not needed to us their yard services, but it’s a great stopover.

    • Wahoo River Anchorage (Statute Mile 630)

I agree with Captain Litchfield, that the best anchorage is found upstream. Try dropping the hook just as the eastern tip of Wahoo Island comes abeam. Farther upstream, depths quickly shelve upward.

We spent a quiet night here on 12/03/09. Watch the shoaling at the entrance, especially the north side. We went up stream to find shelter from the wind. Recommend going upstream for protection and to avoid the swift current near the rivers mouth.. Holding appeared great and our danforth held giving us a peaceful night.

    • St. Augustine Creek Anchorage (Statute Mile 578)

I’m certainly Captain Chris had “no problems” on this anchorage, and it’s good to hear that the captain of the gambling boat was so courteous. Nevertheless, we have downgraded our rating of this anchorage due to the regular passage of the large casino ship.

I stayed near the turn [of St. Augustine Creek] on the second 17 noted on the chart with a 27′ sailboat. While looking in the creek, I passed and chatted with the Capt of the casino boat. He informed me that he would be returning around 2330 and suggested the area of the second 17 ft marking because of width. I happened to be up around 2330 and hailed the casino boat when I saw them in the creek. You can see them for a mile or so and asked if he wouldn’t mind slowing down. He slowed when he rounded the turn and was very courteous. I had no problems with this anchorage.

    • Wally’s Leg Anchorage (Statute Mile 666)

Note Captain Litchfield’s navigational advice below, and that actual depths are less than charted levels.

Stopped here southbound in early December 2009 and northbound in April 2010. Holding is good if you are using proper techniques and equipment for your boat. We had no problems, but a catamaran and sailboat both dragged anchor in Dec.
Strong West winds will just about blow you out of the creek. Current here is strong and reversing like most of GA. Water not as deep as charted. We favored the south side of the creek and had no problems.

    • Dungeness Greyfield Channel Anchorage (Statute Mile 711.5)

Wow, talk about an anchorage with promise. That’s just what we have with the waters abeam of the so-called, “Sea Camp” docks on the Dungeness – Greyfield Channel. Getting here is made MUCH easier with a well functioning GPS chartplotter aboard, but after dropping the hook, dinghy ashore to Cumberland Island, and experience the incredible, untouched maritime forests, historic homes and one of the best beaches anywhere. These lands are now a Federal park, and it is to all our good fortune that this entire isle is safe from rampant development. Don’t dare miss this one!!!

Great anchorage and spot to visit. We visited the island and would like to do it again on the next trip.
Holding was good for us despite reports of problems by other cruisers. We experienced a calm anchoring, but the anchorage is exposed to just about all wind directions. Wind with opposing current could make for a bumpy time.

    • Observations and Reservations on Isle of Hope Anchorage (Statute Mile 590)

We’ve heard from several other cruisers about crowded conditions, local traffic and party noise making this anchorage less than ideal. But if you’re in a party mood and feeling gregarious, this might be a good weekend stopping point for you.

      Submitted on 2010/05/22 at 6:36pm
We anchored here on Friday, 4/23/10. It’s crowded with lots of boats on private moorings and permanent locals anchoring. That didn’t leave much room for transients. We managed to slip into a tight spot just outside the channel markers. Watch your position with the reversing current. There was some tug and barge traffic. Lots of local traffic and noise from shore. Weekend partying, etc. Lots of friendly boaters curious about our ICW experiences and our live aboard cat. Nice spot, but I wouldn’t count of finding room to anchor here. Better bet is to take a slip at the marina.

    • Unhappy News About AICW/Hell Gate Depths (near Statute Mile 602)

The notorious Hell Gate section of the AICW, south of Savannah and Isle of Hope, was dredged during the summer of 2009, and for a time, all has been well on these waters. The posting below from Captain Bob is the first notice we have had that shoaling may once again be rearing its ugly head. Because Captain Bob does not provide an exact time and date when his soundings were taken (see below), it’s not possible to fully verify what an 8.8 foot reading “30 minutes after high tide,” would actually equate to at Mean Low Water. But, it certainly can’t be good news.
We are returning Hell Gate to the ranks of a true “AICW Problem Stretch,” and ask the cruising community to PLEASE forward ANY information about depths in Hell Gate ASAP, by clicking the “Comment on This Posting/Marina/Anchorage/Bridge” link below, or sending e-mail to me at CruisingWriter@CruisersNet.net. Many thanks in advance!!!

      Good evening, Claiborne.
Looks like bad things are beginning to happen again at Hell Gate. Came through here mid channel this afternoon thirty minutes after high tide and observed a depth of 8.8 feet fifty yards Northeast of Green Marker 87. Didn’t believe what I saw so I went back and observed the same results.
Weren’t the dredges here just a year ago?
      Captain Bob Poovey

      Hi Claiborne,
We came through Hell Gate at 11.10 ‘“ 11.20 hours, May 21. Low tide was at 09.00 hrs. We favored the west side of mid channel a little going north. We never saw less than 13 ft.

We also passed through Hell Gate on May 19. It was about 1-1/2 hrs after high tide and the lowest we saw was 12 ft. We tried to stay mid-channel.

    • Savannah City Dock Is Open (Downtown Savannah – Savannah River)

The report below, which originally appeared on the MTOA List-Serve, was in response to earlier reports here on the Cruisers’ Net and other nautical lists, which reported the Savannah City Docks were going to be closed for some time to come on Mondays through Wednesdays for maintenance work. Then, we saw reports that these closures were a thing of the past, so I removed the earlier posting here on the Net. From what Captain Feller says below, sounds like you’d better call ahead to make sure. Follow the link below for a telephone number.
Also, you could always moor at the River Street Market Place Dock, just a tad farther downstream. This facility is also within easy walking distance of Savannah’s wonderful historic district, and its many, many dining attractions.

The phone said it would be closed Mon-Wed, we got here today (Thu) and the worker said it was CLOSED! But not to worry, they got what they needed done and opened the docks this evening….there will b work being done in the next couple of weeks so b sure to call ahead…..ps we found out if u pull into the hyatt dock, u can stay for up to 4 hrs if u buy something in there lounge….cokes count….fyi.

    • Savannah City Dock Now Charging Overnight Dockage Fees (Savannah River)

So much for free dockage in downtown Savannah! With these new fees, cruisers may want to seriously consider tying their lines at River Street Market Place Dock, just a touch farther downstream, or making use of a marina at nearby Thunderbolt or Isle of Hope. From these latter facilities, it’s only a quick taxi ride into the Savannah Historic and Downtown Business District.

The City of Savannah is preparing to once again charge for docking at the Riverfront Plaza facilities. Per a phone conversation with Shawn Emerson of the Mobility and Parking Services Department, the policy will be in place by the end of May. Bottom line is the fee will be $1.50/ft for 24 hours. Tieing up for less than 3 hours is free. Complete information may be found on the Waterway Guide or City of Savannah websites.
      Ted Stehle
      Waterway Guide/Skipper Bob Publications

It will be interesting to see how the boating market responds to this. Even though the location is excellent my experience is that the free nature is the main draw of the site. The hotels docks nearby charge around double the 1.50/ft but you have some services especially water and real electricity not the 15amp service (on GFI sockets that do not work with my boat) and that sometimes work and sometimes not. Water bibs are in bad repair and only a few for the whole dock.
I have made this a regular stop but will now have to re-evaluate stopping at Thunderbolt instead. This will free up space for the locals who come to enjoy and afternoon and do not stay overnight and who were probably complaining about all the freeloaders who stayed for days and took all the space.
Aw I will probably stop there again in the fall and pay the freight and remember the good ol days.
