In the NC Cut, my family and I came upon what we thought was a Mickey Mouse balloon floating across the ICW. It was a black bear!
Special report: The state’s black bear population was in trouble 50 years ago, but research and conservation measures put in place in the decades since — with hunters’ “direct cooperation” — have enabled the species to recover, although not everyone is happy.

The U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center (NAVCEN) is excited to announce the launch of its updated Local Notice to Mariners (LNM) and Light List application during the week of December 2nd, reaffirming our commitment to enhancing access to critical maritime safety information.
This upgraded application allows users to download and print LNMs for entire Coast Guard Districts or define their own area of interest using the GIS tools to zoom in and access localized data. The form section enables users to organize and sort LNMs by waterway or category. For programmatic integration, GeoJSON files will be available to download for data ingestion into other applications.
We sincerely appreciate your patience and are confident this enhanced version will better serve the diverse needs of the maritime community.

As you probably know the USCG recently re-formatted the listing style of Local Notices. Instead of the past geographical format of north to south to north arrangement, the items are now listed alphabetically, so that Alligator River in NC is followed by Anacostia River in Washington, DC. The notice week, as in 46/24, is not included, so that you do not know if it is a new notice. Descriptions of the particular problems are not presented in a normal paragraph, but in a tall column.
This new “improved” version makes it impossible to compile notices pertinent to ICW cruisers into a posting as Cruisers Net has done in the past. See CURRENT LOCAL NOTICES TO MARINERS.
Until these issues are solved, Cruisers Net will have to rely on the limited USCG postings that are emailed to us. And, of course, we always rely on you to alert your fellow cruisers to problems as you encounter them!
