Jarrett Bay is actually located north of Beaufort, NC, on the Core Creek Canal section of the AICW. This is a superb facility for dry storage, and for any sort of repair work. There are many repair firms on-site, including our friends at Core Creek Marine. And, oh yes, even though Jarrett Bay is not strictly a marina, there is some transient dockage available by the fuel dock, and both gasoline and diesel fuel can be purchased.

Just to pass on experience at Jarrett Bay:
I stopped on a Saturday to try to find a small part which had some immediate importance but that is not the story. There was an ancient trawler in the slings belonging to an equally ancient couple headed back to the NE. They had struck something and had serious vibration. Turns out that Jarrett Bay had come in on a day they were closed, the manager and two helpers, to lift them out to fix the problem. They could find nothing wrong, maybe something had hung up on the props and had cleared.
The notable thing was they did not charge them a cent. Not even for the short haul. The owner did tip the dockhands. Now that is service.
BTW they did not have the part i needed they gave me something that was a temporary fix, also for free.
Keep these guys on your list if you need work done near Beaufort.

Jarrett Bay is also a Detroit Covington dealer, parts and repair center. I’ve had good service on my Covington 6V92’s Jesse is the parts guy there.Prices are reasonable and factory Detroit oil and fuel filters are downright cheap.

As Capt Miller avows: wide swing radius and extra scope can indeed make for a restful night . However, Cedar Creek, a very popular AICW anchorage, found immediately adjacent to the Waterway between Neuse River and Beaufort, NC, can be crowded with other vessels and crab pots. There is also a sunken sailboat practically in the center of the creek’s entrance.

Cruising News:
We anchored in Cedar Creek at mile 187 on 4/27/2012. We motored a swing circle and found the shallows much deeper than charted. We dropped on the 6 foot line in the eastern corner of the anchorage. A longer saiboat had gone even further in to starboard.
The anchor grabbed and held well. With an available swing circle of 600 feet and no other boats anchored nearby, I savored the luxury of paying out extra scope and sleeping soundly.
There appears to be a shoal just northeast of the front range marker, “9”. It is marked with three white pipes. We entered and departed south of “9”.
It’s a tree lined anchorage and the only disturbance was an occassional wake from boats on the ICW (Be careful when cooking over the stove).

This is not the first unhappiness with prices at the Municipals Docks we have had expressed here. Price can easily be blamed on the economy, but attitude and service should never be compromised. Despite such dockage problems, the town of Beaufort, NC is still known as a real success story along the Waterway and this wonderful port of call remains one of our favorites, anytime, anywhere!

Dockage on the facedocks is now $2.75/ft. This marina used to be such a good place to go to because of the restaurants and quaint local businesses. But, staff is unfriendly and prices exorbitant. Would think Beaufort docks could help the local economy a lot by lowering their slips rate to encourage boaters from SE NC to come visit for the weekend and spend money in town. Boats must be bypassing Beaufort and going over to Morehead City or anchoring out’¦’¦cause there certainly weren’t many boats in marina. On a positive note, we ate dinner at Front Street Grill at Stillwater and food was wonderful!!!! Highly recommend.

We were `burnt’ our first trip south when we had to stay three days due to weather Nov. 2010. Blew one month’s budget. Staff then was friendly, but will not visit unless absolutely necessary for fuel, and then will definitely anchor.

The town marina [Municipal Docks] was always a must stop for us as we go north/south (note we live in NC). Their reputation is now better than actual, as we have watched this place go up in cost while not maintaining facilities, but more importantly, bad attitudes from the staff. Staff especially are getting bad reputation up/down the ICW. We now go to Morehead City where all the marinas/restaurants are working hard for business. Beaufort is a must see town, but there are other places to dock in order to see the town. The savings on dockage will more than pay for a cab.

This shoaling seems to lie at the southern end of Radio Island between marker #22 and marker #2 at the south end of the main channel leading from Beaufort Inlet into the Beaufort waterfront. Fortunately, most of us will be able to cruise through 9-foot MLW depths without a problem, but this report does signal that these waters will have to be carefully watched for future shallowing!

An interesting series of events described below, but the real lesson here is how much current exists on the very popular Taylor Creek anchorage, just off the Beaufort, NC waterfront, and how carefully one must anchor, and maintain those anchors.

We remember Taylor Creek readily, mostly because of the currents. Anchored at the eastish end, in a fairly narrow section, we seemed to either be too close for comfort to the island or too the channel. Nothing we did could change this. Our neighbor though, never seemed to move more than a couple feet. So one day, I rowed over to see how they were anchored, anxious to learn a better way.
Turned out the woman was by herself, her husband having been taken to the hospital several days before because of a heart attack. She was besides herself because of a storm that was forecast for that evening and her rodes had wrapped around themselves so much that her scope had significantly been reduced, and she was pretty certain that one, if not both anchors had tripped (originally anchored Bahamian style). In addition, their engine was overheating and she wasn’t comfortable operating it to begin with.
I offered to help do what I could and she enthusiastically agreed. I went back and got Jill, so the three of us could sort out her predicament. Pulled her anchors up and discovered that she was right in her assessment, although only one anchor had tripped, the wrapping having pulled it halfway up the other anchor’s rode. Got her reanchored (her engine was overheating) and Jill and I went back to our boat, happy that we did a good deed. We still chuckle when we rethink of this event, thinking that boat was so well anchored and that we could learn something from her, when it turned out it was borderline, at best.
As it turned out her boat started swinging just as far and wide as ours did, so we learned nothing there; but, it didn’t drag throughout the storm. Her husband returned two days latter and the impression we got was that he wasn’t very pleased that we helped his wife… never said hello, even thought he motored right by us repeatedly, never said thanks. We still can’t understand that part, but none-the-less, we’d do it again if the opportunity presented itself!

Captain Bill and Kathleen’s response below is in answer to a question which originally appeared on the AGLCA mailing list, asking for dry boat storage recommendations north of Beaufort, SC. Well, Jarrett Bay is actually located north of Beaufort, NC, on the Core Creek Canal section of the AICW.

I would recommend Jarrett Bay in Beaufort, NC off the ICW. You can get their contact info off the internet at They are a repair and storage yard, not a marina. They have an excellent facility and staff, very experienced at storing boats in a manner that avoids hurricane damage. We used them for repairs on our Hatteras when we were passing through on the loop two years ago. We were very satisfied. Ask for Roger Wetherington and tell him Bill Root referred you.

In the heart of downtown, the City docks are on the northern banks of the Morehead City waterfront channel, west of Morehead Gulf Docks. Reservations are made by calling 252-726-2457, but payment is made at the City Library one block from the waterfront at 9th and Evans.

We stayed at these docks on 11/25/11. Nice new floating docks and new shower facilities. Manager was very nice and helpful.. Great location for downtown Morehead City and waterfront walk. Fast tide that runs abeam so docking can be tough in fast current. Suggest arriving at slack tide for less stress.

Town Creek Marina in Beaufort guards the northerly banks of Town Creek, southeast of the Gallants Channel’s flashing daybeacon #14. The damage noted below by Captain Lacroix is due to the recent passing of Hurricane Irene. We are told repairs are underway, but call ahead to make sure the services you need are in place before your arrival.

Stayed at Town Creek Marina for a night. Staff were really nice and helpful. Unfortunately the marina was in need of repair; we had no power or water. I couldn’t recommend it.

Morehead City Yacht Basin, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, is located on the southern flank of the marked channel that runs west from the AICW, just north of the Morehead-Beaufort, Newport River high-rise bridge. We heartily agree with Captain Lacroix, that this is one of the finest facilities to be found anywhere on the Southeastern USA coastline!

Moved to Morehead City Yacht Basin which was perhaps one of the best marinas we have encountered. This is a first class facility. Rented a car for 2 hours for $10. Staff Diana and Tom were great – gave us restaurant advice which couldn’t have been better. Ruddy Duck and Beach Bumz – worth a visit.

It’s always good to hear of a new source of supplies within walking distance of your boat. The Town Docks Ed refers to are, of course, the Beaufort Municipal Docks. Cruisers can access Treasure Coast Provisions by walking north on Craven Street.
Another provisioning choice in Beaufort is the Coastal Community Market, located at 606 Broad St (252-728-2844, http://www.coastalcommunitymarket.com/). It’s a few more blocks away, but here you will discover a nice selection of local vegetables, eggs and breads, plus more than a few choices in the way of organic foods.

For all of those cruising in the Beaufort/Morehead City, NC, area there is a new grocery/convenience store open half-a-block away from the Beaufort Town Docks.
The new store, called Treasure Chest Provisions, is located at 129 Middle Lane. The store carries ice, packaged grocery items, some perishables (including bread and milk), plus dry goods. To reach the new store, boaters walk north on Craven Street from the Front Street town docks.

I Was in Beaufort N C just a day or so ago and I found Treasure Chest Provisions store on 129 Middle lane just a block from the dock master house. It was PERFECT the store had eggs, milk, cheese, yougart lettuce and just about all the supplies that we needed from being out after a month at sea. Just needed some wine but was told that it is coming. The employee was very polite and outgoing. This is a shop that will get my business each time I pull into port. I wish them great success to everything in the upcoming year.

Treasure Chest at 129 Middle Lane in Beaufort N C has just what most boaters are looking for. We stopped in on way to Canada and look forward to stopping in again on way back down. Love the home made baked goods.
My crew and I were in Beaufort just a few days ago on our way back to Canada and stopped in Beaufort NC . we needed milk and eggs and found Treasure Chest Gift & Provisions. they not only had the milk & eggs that we needed we found fresh baked goods as well as fresh fruit and vegetables. This is a store that has been long in coming. Make sure to stop by the owners are so friendly. Look forward to seeing them again on our way back down south.

just spent three beautiful days in beaufort, nc. i was happy to find a new store, Treasure Chest Provisions, located at 121 Craven Street. They had eggs, milk, cheese, produce, dry goods, etc. at very reasonable prices. i was happy to replenish some supplies without taking a trip to the food lion! It is a small shop located in the back of the gift store. they just opened in may. Please support them.

Town Creek Marina is located on the northern banks of Town Creek, southeast of the Gallants Channel’s flashing daybeacon #14, departing the Waterway southeast at marker #30, mile 201, .

I had mechanical problems and SeaTow recommended this marina because they had mechanics. Steve Tulevech was service manager and handled problem. Their mechanic fixed problem and the charge was very reasonable. They also have very good restaurant with seafood at reasonable prices. I recommend this marina. They have parts department if you need any parts or mechanical supplies.
