    • Deep Point Marina, Southport, NC, AICW Statute Mile 307

910-269-2380 The new 82-slip Deep Point Marina is located on the Cape Fear River in Southport, NC, and offers fuel and transient dockage, as well as daily, monthly and annual slip rentals. The marina is adjacent to the new Bald Head Island Ferry Terminal, which houses a snack bar (open seasonally) that offers grab-and-go food options, soft drinks, beer, wine and coffee. In addition, the Deep Point Marina is convenient to Southport's shopping, restaurants and historic district, and offers easy ocean access.

Deep Point Marina lies in the Cape Fear River via a marked entry channel northwest of Cape Fear River/AICW marker #20 and is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

This marina is located on the western shore of the Cape Fear River just north of downtown Southport. Deep Point has floating docks with slips and T-heads and is the operating terminal for the Bald Head Island Ferry. This marina is just a bit south of the NC State Ferry terminal for the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry. It is near the Cape Fear River channel Red marker 20 (nun buoy).
Fuel is available and, seasonally, there is a café in the ferry terminal. Travel into Southport requires a taxi or a car ride. Taking the ferry to visit Bald Head Island is a convenient option when stopping here.

    • Seapath Yacht Club & Transient Marina, Wrightsville Beach, NC, AICW Statute Mile 284

Seapath Yacht Club - Click for Chartview

Seapath Yacht Club lies northwest of Motts Channel’s unlighted daybeacon #21.

Located on Motts Channel, which is just south of the Wrightsville Beach bridge, the marina is on the north side of the channel about a tenth of a mile east of the ICW. This marina provides dockage for transient boats primarily on its long floating face dock. Fuel is available and stores and restaurants are within walking distance.
This marina is particularly useful as jump off point prior to the five bridges when going north on the ICW, or as an end of day port if making an offshore run from the Beaufort Inlet to the Masonboro Inlet just south of Wrightsville Beach. Access via the inlet to Banks Channel and Motts Channel makes it easy to reach Seapath. The only difficulty (that is well known) is that Motts Channel has a tendency to shoal where it meets the ICW (see Cruiser’s net report).

Harbor Village Marina guards the Waterway’s northwestern shore hard by flashing daybeacon #94.

This marina is between the Surf City Bridge and the Figure Eight Island Swing Bridge near ICW red marker 94. It too offers a bail out point on those long days when bridge timing and travel speeds do not work out well. There are floating docks in this marina, which primarily caters to private slip holders. There are a few transient docks and fuel is available. There are no restaurants or stores nearby.

    • Casper’s Marine Service, Swansboro, NC, AICW Statute Mile 229

Family owned and operated, Casper’s Marine Service lies at the western foot of the Swansboro channel -northeast of flashing daybeacon #46C in Swansboro, NC.

Located in Swansboro this marina is at the east end of Bogue Sound near the Bogue Inlet and the White Oak River. It is easily accessed but is fairly exposed in windy conditions. It has fixed docks with slips and one T-head. Fuel is available and there are several restaurants nearby.
NOTE: This stop is a convenient spot just before the ICW stretch going south that has five bridges with the names, heights and opening schedules shown below. Because the two that open only hourly are 22 miles apart, at trawler & sailboat speeds (with frequent no-wake areas for all boats) transiting this area often makes for a long day. Any boaters that can fold down their mast and antennas to go under a 20 ft bridge are well advised to do so.
–Onslow Beach Swing Bridge, 12 ft, opens on the hour and half-hour (mile 241)
–Highway Bridge, 65 ft (mile 253)
–Surf City Swing Bridge, 12 ft, opens on the hour (mile 261)
–Figure Eight Island Bridge, 20 ft, opens on the hour and half-hour (mile 278)

    • Beaufort Municipal Docks, Beaufort, NC, AICW Statute Mile 202

Beaufort Municipal Docks - Click for Chartview

It is certainly good to hear positive comments about this popular stopping point for Waterway cruisers. The town of Beaufort, NC is known as a real success story along the Waterway and this wonderful port of call remains one of our favorites, anytime, anywhere!

Beaufort (on the east) and Morehead City (on the west) straddle the ICW at the Route 70 highway bridge. There is a back channel entrance to Beaufort when approaching from the north, but we do not recommend that route. Instead the best approach is to go out and around Radio Island and to enter the Beaufort harbor from the south.
The Beaufort Docks marina is in the center of the Beaufort downtown tourist area, and is adjacent to a large mooring field. The docks are floating docks with slips and T-heads. The dockhands are capable and will direct you to a dockage that takes into account the direction of the strong tidal currents in the harbor. Fuel is available and stores and restaurants are right next to the docks.

Oriental Marina - Click for Chartview

Oriental Marina is located on the eastern banks of inner Oriental Harbor off the Neuse River and is A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

Located just off the Neuse River across from the ICW entrance to Adams Creek, this marina is within the quaint village of Oriental. The harbor entrance is a quick turn to starboard just after the breakwater entrance to Smith & Greens Creek, and well before the highway bridge. The marina is at the dead end of the harbor, and has dockage available in several fixed slips. Fuel is available and the marina has a pool and a restaurant. There are a few nearby stores and other restaurants. Oriental is a favored harbor location for sail boaters. There is also a good size commercial fishing fleet that uses the harbor.

    • Belhaven Waterway Marina, Belhaven, NC, AICW Statute Mile 136

Belhaven Waterway Marina - Click for Chartview

Belhaven Waterway Marina is found on the northeastern banks of Pantego Creek, north of marker #9.

There are a few choices in the Belhaven area, which is the first area when going southbound that offers marina stops after Coinjock, other than the Alligator River Marina (which is a good stop in bad weather). Over the years the choices have evolved as the marinas have changed. We find the Belhaven Waterway Marina to be best because it is located in `downtown’ Belhaven near a few stores and several restaurants. All other nearby marinas are some distance away from this area.
The marina is located inside the breakwater on Pantego Creek just off the Pungo River. It is reached by following the marked channel up the creek (past the River Forrest Marina) to the next dock area on the starboard side adjacent to a newly built multiple story condominium development. The entrance is a narrow channel next to the condos that is identified by a marina sign and a prominent gazebo. The dockage is along a fixed face dock on the port side of the channel. Water depth can be an issue when entering the channel, but we’ve brought in two boats with 5.5 foot draft without a problem.
The nearby `Fish Hooks’ restaurant is one of a few popular seafood restaurants in the area. There is no fuel at this stop. But the marina owner is a well regarded boat repair mechanic if service is needed.

Coinjock Marina - Click for Chartview

Coinjock Marina, on the eastern bank of the Waterway, has been making and keeping friends in the boating community for years and is A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

The North Carolina Cut connects Currituck Sound and the North Landing River to the North River which flows into the Albemarle Sound. Coinjock Marina is about at the midway point on this cut on the eastern side. This marina is a favorite stopover for boats going north or south, and has an excellent restaurant next to the dock. The marina consists of one long fixed face dock. There is strong current flow in both directions at various times through the cut, and the dockhands will direct you to tie up in the proper direction to keep your bow into the current while docking. Fuel is available all along the dock, and the dock store is reasonably well stocked with commonly needed items.

    • Resolution to Tax Woes in Hanover County, Cape Fear River, Wilmington, NC

“Death and Taxes”…what can you say? Our sympathies Captain Chappell. Fortunately, this situation was resolved.

RE: New Hanover County (Wilmington, NC)
They not only are zealous but are quite bloody minded in the way they deal with People. They continued to bill me for two years after the boat was sold, and just will not accept the fact the boat was not in their County during the next year after I made the mistake of staying over January 1st the Year before.
As I was cruising south’¦.and did not take up a slip or mooring anywhere and thus had no Marina Bill to show’¦they continue to insist I owed them for the full year despite not being there.
They freely admit the Marina documented my departure date but despite having that information’¦.continue to ignore what that statement said’¦.’Departed!’
My advice to all’¦.pass right on through New Hanover County’¦.do not stop’¦do not buy a single thing in New Hanover County’¦.go on into South Carolina where you are welcome and do not have the burden of dealing with the New Hanover County Tax Office.
Their comment to me, `Tax has to be paid every year on your boat!’ sums up their attitude. They refuse to accept that Boaters only have to comply with the laws for the Tax Jurisdiction they find themselves within. Which for them means a great many of New Hanover County boaters cross the SC State Line for a couple of weeks, pay for a Slip and escape paying taxes to New Hanover County’¦.which saves a lot of money for the Boater.
If I had known the Tax problems I would have with New Hanover County (Wilmington, NC)’¦.I would never have stopped there. As people have noted’¦.New Bern Tax folks are quite pleasant and helpful in the way they conduct their business of collecting taxes’¦.which is not the case in New Hanover County.
      Ralph Chappell

      Cruising News:
I posted earlier about dealing with the New Hanover County Tax Office re Tax issues on my boat. My earlier post was not very favorable about that organization.
Upon reaching a Supervisory level staff member we quickly worked out a resolution that was quite fair and not at all problematic.
Perhaps there is hope after all.
I believe the secret is as always….only deal with a person who has the authority to actually make a determination and not the low ranking clerks who have no decision making authority.
My comments about the North Carolina Tax law re Cruising Sailors remains unchanged. The State drives off way too much business and thus creates a great hardship on businesses that would otherwise enjoy trade with those traveling about on their boats.
The other advice unfortunately remains….be a pack rat with receipts, bills, logs, notes, journals, photographs, and bar tabs….to prove exactly where your boat was at any given day, date, and time. Seems a pity it has to be that way.
      Ralph Chappell

      Cruising News:
Contrary to some of the negative reviews we’ve seen on the Internet, we had a very pleasant overnight stay at the Beaufort, N.C. Municipal Docks a couple of nights ago. The dock personnel were uniformly friendly, helpful, and competent, and while the dockage rate of $2.30/ft was higher than we’ve seen elsewhere, it was significantly less than we expected on the basis of several online reviews we’d read. The docks are right in the heart of the historic section of Beaufort, and we’d be very happy to stay there again the next time we’re in the area.

    • Surveys of North Carolina Inlets and Inlet Crossings

Salty Southeast Cruisers’ Net has utilized and posted these surveys in the past to clarify shoaling or hazards in particular areas and we thank Capt. Banyas for mentioning them again. Do keep in mind that certain inlet crossings can shift so quickly that even the latest survey can be misleading. Our recommendation for such trouble spots is to follow the temporary buoys set by the Coast Guard and, of course, read the latest reports sent to us from your fellow boaters.

This link will take you to the latest US Army Corps of Engineer website page for latest .pdf files are available for hydrographic surveys of these inlets.

      http://www.saw.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation/HydrographicSurveys/AIWW/CFRLR.aspx

Both were updated within last month or so. These have always been very helpful to determine exactly where it is shallow and where it is deep. Now they have waypoints included as well which you can input to chartplotter or other navigational instruments.
      Pat Banyas

And this link from “Tangent 11” in the first link covers all the inlets and inlet crossings in North Carolina:

After spending a cold cold winter on the Outer Banks, I am now cruising again on MV ‘Pisces’ – mothers – hide your daughters. 🙂
Currently enjoying the friendship and facilities of Lambs Marina, somewhat changed for even better services. For a start Larry is now offering ethanol free gasoline and diesel at very competitive prices – and what I believe is the lowest slip rent on the ICW. ($4.50 per ft per mo, $5.50 pfpm for liveaboards. Wanchese waterfront is on the east side of Roanoke Island and is access by a marked channel departing the Roanoke Channel at lighted Marker #16. Their website is www.baylissboatworks.com

If you do have mechanical problems anywhere from Elizabeth City to Oriental I cannot speak highly enough of the Bayliss Boatworks in Wanchese which is just south of Manteo on Roanoke Island. These folks were just a delight to deal with, and the quality of their work is the best I have encountered in over 23 years of boating. Although they do not have transit slips nor would I recommend them for sailboats, powerboats over 30′ or so can not find a better place to have repairs done or even a quality bottom job.
      Doug Cordello

Bayliss can handle just about any Boatworks you may need. Our Gemini Cat has been in their yard this winter undergoing several upgrades, including installing and wiring a Lewmar windlass and several other electrical upgrades. They are right on the water across from the dock house. The Taylor Creek deli was closed at 7:00 pm and that was a bit upsetting. This shop was open and was very pleasant and what they did not have they got for us to our boat by the following morning at 5:00 am before we pulled to head up to Main. • Steep 275% to 1025% North Carolina Boat Fee Registration Increases Proposed

This important Action Alert concerning all recreational boat owners in North Carolina was issued to North Carolina BoatUS members this week. To contact your NC legislator, click on the link below.

      March 8, 2013
      Dear North Carolina BoatU.S. Member:

The North Carolina General Assembly is considering legislation that would significantly increase registration fees on recreational boats to raise revenue for coastal dredging projects. BoatU.S. is dedicated to preserving access to waterways but S.B. 58 places an unfair financial burden on recreational boaters while ignoring the responsibility of commercial fishing boats and for-hire charter fishing and headboats.

S.B. 58 will now go to the Senate Finance Committee and could be heard as early as Tuesday, March 12. Please contact your State Senator today and respectfully urge them to vote `No’ on S.B. 58.

      Here’s why:

‘¢Boaters who solely boat on the state’s lakes and rivers will be paying for projects they will never use.
      ‘¢The fee for a 20ft boat would jump 275% for a 3-year registration. For a 40ft boat, a 3-year registration will skyrocket 1025%!
‘¢SB 58 would make the Tarheel State the most expensive state in which to register a boat of its coastal border states.
Please let your State Senator know that you oppose S.B. 58 as drafted and ask them to consider a more reasonable way to pay for dredging North Carolina’s coastal inlets and essential waterways.

      To take action, click here:

      http://www.capwiz.com/boatus/issues/alert/?alertid=62485226&type=ST&show_alert=1

      Sincerely Yours,
      Margaret B. Podlich
      President, BoatU.S
      703-461-2878 x3201

Great issue. I live in MI but am finally going to make it to the coast this spring. Did some research on the NC tax issue. Couple items left out. Documented boats do not have to be registered. And the current cost of registration is dirt cheap compared to most other states, at least Great Lakes states. In NC my vessel would be 40 for 3 years. In MI it is 244.
I don’t want to see any government raise taxes. But NC will still be cheap relatively speaking.
      Eric

    • Don’t Dare Miss A Stop in Southport, NC (Statute Mile 309)

Southport Marina As a boy, I spent many a summer living aboard in the old Southport Harbor. I still have many fond memories of this delightful village!
Much of the dockage Captains Kay and Bob speak about below is located in the older, easterly basin, while modern Southport Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, lies just next door, and within easy walking distance of all the old harbor’s dining attractions.
Really, folks, don’t miss a stop in Southport! Those who just cruise on by are missing one of the great ports of call along the AICW!

We are from Southport, NC, and think that Bald Head and Southport are both great stops. Bald Head does charge a “day Dockage” fee for docking and dining but last summer it was $20. Their overnight dockage is between $1.50 and $2.00 per foot, and again a great stop. There are several restaurants that offer free dockage, no power or water, if you dine with them, [Yacht Basi] Provision being one of the most popular, plus the City of Southport offers one free dock for overnight, with 15 amp. power and water, in the back of the Yacht Basin.
Also, Southport Marina is just next to the Southport Yacht Basin, $1.75 per foot, and an easy walk to the restaurants and downtown.
We have seen the movie Safe Haven, filmed in Southport, and think that it is great, and accurately reflects our town.
Make Southport and Bald Head Island a stop on your travels!
