    • Five Fathom Creek Anchorage ??? (Statute Mile 430)

Back in 2007and 2008, we received some seemingly definite reports of a foul bottom and shallower than expected depths on the upstream portion of Five Fathom Creek, northeast of marker #20. For that reason, we removed these waters from our South Carolina Anchorage Directory. Now, as you will read below, Captain Thomason has had a much different and better experience dropping the hook here.
Has anyone else tried to anchor on the upstream portion of Five Fathom Creek lately? If so, PLEASE tell us what you found. Either e-mail me at CruisingWriter@CruisersNet.net, or click on the “Comment on This Posting/Marina/Anchorage/Bridge” link below.

I don’t see Five Fathom Creek anchorage on the cruisers net list. We have anchored there (Upstream from the red 20 on Five Fathom Creek) several times, most recently on September 23. It’s fun to watch the shrimp fleet go by on Town Creek but no problem with wakes. As I recall, depth was about 10 feet MLW. Beautiful sunset!

On November 23rd, 2009 we anchored in same spot as `Dovekie’ (message above posted Sept.2009). No problems with depth – it was about 9 feet MLW (we draw 5′). We did not find a foul bottom – all clear on the anchor. Good holding for us even though we were swinging to the current. As with `Dovekie’ watching the shrimp boats go by is very nice, they are quiet with very little wake.

Well, we anchored there the night of September 21 through 22 so I guess we just missed you.
No problems and we did watch a shrimp boat come in.

    • Charleston City Marina (Ashley River, Statute Mile 469.5)

The discussion below is copied from the T&T (Trawlers and Trawlering) Mail List. It began with the first messge below, asking for Charleston marina advice. I have plucked out two responses which pertain to Charleston City Marina (A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR). Several other respones mentioned the Charleston Maritime Center on the Cooper River side of the Charleston peninsulla. I’ve appended them to a recent string of messages about this facility.
Let me just register my own, personal opinion here. Whenever we are in Charleston (perhaps our favorite port of call anytime, anywhere) we always coil our lines at the City Marina.

We are on our way South and need to leave our trawler for a week at a secure location in or near Charleston? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Last Christmas we left ours at the City marina “Mega dock” for 10 days with no problems. The marina is very nice and near town. The dock is huge and it can be a very long walk to shore if you are out near the end. We had our dog and made the walk about 4 times a day.

I second the City Marina. I live in Charleston and keep my boat at the sister marina. The person to contact is McKenzie who is the delightful and lovely dock master. She knows the marina like the back of her hand. They have a shuttle that will take you to a limited number of places. I don’t have the marina number handy but you can get it at citymarina.com I think.

    • Whiteside Creek Anchorage (Statute Mile 451.5)

Whiteside Creek lies just off the South Carolina AICW, several miles north of the Waterway’s intersection with Charleston Harbor. The marshy shores do not give the best of protection in really heavy weather, as noted below, but otherwise, this is a good overnight haven.

We anchored here and also found the current a little challenging. There was a sailboat anchored in the 11′ sounding area so we went around the bend to the 13′ area. Two attempts to set our Danforth were unsuccessful. The wind, tide and rain didn’t help our efforts. We retreated to the area between the 38′ and 11′ soundings and were able to get a good anchor set. We too rode strangely with the wind/current situation. Northerly winds remained at 15+ with gusts so not much sleep that night. The Danforth held ok and was tough to unset. In all three sailboats rode out the evening here. In less windy conditions it would be a great spot to anchor.

    • Jericho Creek Anchroage (off the AICW/Waccamaw River, near Statute Mile 395)

Jericho Creek does not offer the roomiest anchorage of the many great overnight havens off the AICW/Waccamaw River. However, the really adventurous among us can cruise the creek all the way to the Pee Dee River. That is a really interesting journey, but it’s not for everyone, and certainly not for larger cruising craft.

We anchored here on the south side of the oxbow. The south side gave us better protection from northerly winds. As noted, not much swing room and two anchors might be advisable, but we passed the night on one. You need to watch the tide, shoaling and bar at the mouth. We had to bugout early AM to get across the bar safely. We noted 6.2′ as we crossed the bar.
      Dick Litchfield

I passed through Jericho Creek between Pee Dee and Waccamaw Rivers about six months ago at low tide (three foot draft trawler). It was beautiful and adventurous, but I saw two large stumps just above the surface, center of the creek, in the winding part of the creek near Wacammaw River. I would not have seen these with one foot more water. I don’t know if they were transient or there all the time. Be careful in this area.

    • Leland Oil Company Marina (Statute Mile 430)

We love McClellanville. Wandering its old, sand covered streets is like taking a step back, some might say “far back,” in time. Leland Oil Company marina is certainly a bit on the minimalist side.

We stayed one night at Leland Oil Co on Oct. 26th, 2009. The dockmaster put us at the floating dock next to the shrimp boats. It is tricky at low tide with my Irwin 46 Ketch’s 6 ft. keel but did not run aground at mid tides in and out. We walked the nearby street but did not see any part of the town. The stop was part of a 332 mile uneventful 8 day trip from Dowry Creek Marina in Belhaven, NC to Charleston, SC. Our only problem the entire trip was fishermen with nets. They had them stretched almost entirely across the ICW at the Sunset Beach pontoon bridge (MM 337.9). We did catch one in our prop while waiting for the bridge to open, and drifted into the shallows and had to call SeaTow to get off the bottom and call a diver to get the net off the prop.

    • Praise for Downtown Beaufort Marina (Statute Mile 536.5)

Rick and Mandy Griffin do a great job at the Downtown Marina of Beaufort. As with virtually every marina in SC and Georgia, you have to be on guard against tidal current as you approach the dock, but otherwise, everyone will have a good time at this facility. And, it doesn’t hurt that the dreamlike Beaufort historic district (plus a host of wonderful restaurants) are only a short step away. Downtown Marina of Beaufort is also a long-time SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

I arrived a day ahead of the remnants of Hurricane Ida, along with 20 other boats. Sat through five days of rain. Marina staff were terrific. Ships store excellent. Showers. heads were kept clean in spite of the crowd. Just steps away from great restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores. You have to plan ahead when you leave, though, and most boats on the inside slips needed to be `warped around’ by had during slack tide so that they would be stern to the dock, bow out. Backing with or against the current is not an option. Marina staff are excellent at this job.

    • Alligator Creek Anchorage (off the AICW/South Edisto River, Statute Mile 511.5)

The South Edisto River/Alligator Creek anchorage, described below, is a bit open. You can not actually cruise into the creek, due to shallow depths, but rather, cruisers should drop the off its mouth (in the river). On the other hand, if the weather cooperates, this can be a great place to spend an evening.

Dropped the hook off Alligator Creek on an ebbing tide, and glad I anchored off. There was no water in the creek at dead low tide. Watch your depth finder and guage how much water will be there at low tide before you drop the hook. Having said there, there is still a great deal room for boats that need 8 – 10 feet of water. Just don’t try the creek. Superb views, good mud bottom. My CQR held great in the currents. Just use the proper scope. Coming out the next morning, I decided to `eyeball’ Fields Cut before entering, and was very glad I did. Two tugboats entered the cut, one pulling a dredge, the other a quarter mile of pipe. There was a sailboat at anchor at the edge of the ICW, and he got many blasts from the horn of the lead tug. The anchorage designated in the illustration is very clear, and is a great spot.
      HB Koerner

Stayed here the night of 5-3-10. We entered from the southern end at low tide lowest we saw was 5.5 ft/ Holding was good and had plenty of swing room for our 55′ fdmy. The dolphins kept us company in the evening and in the morning there was a bald eagle standing on the shoreline. We would anchor here again.

    • Thoroughfare Creek Anchorages (Statute Mile 389)

Out of all the MANY wonderful anchorages off the AICW section of the Waccamaw River, I think Thoroughfare Creek may be my very favorite. Looks like Captain Koerner found this spot equally delightful.

Spent the day under power in a drizzling rain. This was my last chance to find an anchorage before nightfall. It was beautiful to me then, in the rain, and remains so in my memory. One sailing catamaran was there when I arrived, and a trawler arrived just after I set the hook. My Bruce anchor dragged, so I changed to a CQR. No problem. It was probably due to fluky conditions, though, as wind and current were at odds when I arrived. Didn’t get a good set to start with.

    • South Santee River Anchroages (Statute Mile 420)

The South Santee River, south of Minim Creek, is only one of several good anchorages between Winyah Bay and McClellanville. You might want to also check out the overnight havens listed in the “South Carolina Anchorage Directory” (/category/anchorages-icw-belle-isle-sullivans-island/) for the anchorages we list on the North Santee River.

Spent a very nice evening at anchor here. No traffic to speak of. Just three other cruising boats. Use the proper scope and the currents are not problem. I found the holding ground to be very good.

    • Crickett Cove Marina (Statute Mile 345)

Wow, talk about an impressive marina review. Crickett Cove is the first cruising craft friendly marina you will discover when cruising south of the NC – SC state line. It occupies the mainland shore.

I have stopped and stayed at many marinas in my over fifty years of boating on the East Coast, and I can categorically state that I have not found a better-run, cleaner, or more pleasant place to keep `The Lady T’, a Trojan Tri-Cabin trawler, than Cricket Cove Marina. I’m sure there must be comparable marinas somewhere, but I haven’t haven’t found one yet that combines secure docking, attention to detail, and the pleasant and accommodating staff, that I found at this place. it is a gem !

    • Bull Creek Anchorage (off AICW/Waccamaw River. St. M. 381)

The Waccamaw River section of the South Carolina AICW has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to good anchorage along its side streams. However, Bull Creek is one of the very best of the lot. Whenever I talk to cruising groups in South Carolina, and mention Bull Creek, I can look out on my audience and see everyone’s eyes getting dreamy. Anchoring on a stream like Bull Creek is what cruising is all about!

Bull Creek has excellent protection from northerly winds if you can get around the first large bend and behind a large stand of trees. Depths are varied from 30’+ to beginning to verge on shoal. Additionally, there is some small boat traffic on occasion plus a small RO-RO (Rip Rap II) passed, carrying a big SUV and horse van. Holding is good in the current we experienced (somewhat under a knot?) and in gusty winds to 20-25 kts.
      Rick Emerson

We anchored in Bull Creek on November 17th just as another front was beginning to come through. We had rain and 15 sustained winds with gusts to 25kts. We held well and had great water around the first bend of almost 25+ feet. We anchored in the middle with 14-15 feet all around us. We swung in the wind and tidal changes without any issues.

    • Tom Point Creek Anchorage (off AICW/North Edisto River, St. M. 495.5)

We also love dropping the hook on the waters of Tom Point Creek. Except for a slight restriction on swinging room, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Our favorite anchorage in SC. If you go to the third turn (way up the creek) then there is a bar that is exposed at low tide. Be careful, but just before it is our favorite place to stop. A few small bass boats may come by from time to time, but that is no big deal. Also, the dolphins are great many times.

    • Factory Creek Anchorage (Statute Mile 536.5)

The entrance to Factory Creek lies immediately north of the Ladys Island Swing Bridge in Beaufort, SC. This stream is also home to Ladys Island Marina. The anchorage is located upstream of this facility.
Be careful as you cruise from the AICW/Beaufort River into Factory Creek. Captain Emerson’s comments below and earlier reports here on the Cruisers’ Net indicate the channel is narrowing.

We got in on half tide without a problem but didn’t do quite so well leaving close to low tide. We draw 6′ and dragged a bit coming out, although it’s likely we were closer to G `1’³ than we should have been. Once past this area, however, there’s plenty of depth. The anchorage area is strung out along a moderately narrow channel that curves around over 90 deg. along its length. The current in the creek is significant but manageable. The real challenge the creek’s width. On one side are docks (private or marina) and on the other side is marsh. With roughly 15′ depths, a short scope isn’t likely, but over-doing can be a problem, too. We saw some boats riding to a Bahamian mooring (to limit swinging in current) and some (ourselves included) riding to one anchor. The bottom held well enough to allow riding on chain and a CQR in breezy conditions; the hook was hard to break out when it came time to leave. The trip from Factory Creek to the `day dock’ ramp area is long enough to make part of the trip on plane (but NOT in the No Wake areas!).
As mentioned, there are some derelict boats in the creek. We saw one, a motor boat, clearly on its way down. We called Ladys Island Marina to see if they knew about it. `Oh, that happens about twice a month. We worry if we don’t get called twice a month!’

    • Fuel Bill at Wacca Wache Marina (Statute Mile 383.5)

On 11/14, stopped for fuel at WW. When I callled the day before, I was told they now had a $.10 cent discount for Boat US. They do not, nor do they have any other discount. The price per gallon was not shown on the pump. The running total fuel cost shown by the pump was different than the amount shown on the charge slip. While we were indeed told the price of fuel was $2.69 per gallon today, and it worked out correctly at that price, it was most annoying to see that the price on the charge slip was different (by almost $100) than that shown on the pump. While sure that no hankie-pankie was invloved, we were very disconcerted by the experience. I would suggest that all of our boating friends be aware of this issue so as not to be surprised when comparing the at-pump cost to the bill.

Harbour Town has always been one of the most prestigous marinas in the Southeast. And, let’s not forget they are a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

Subject: More on Harbour Town Yacht Basin
Cruising News: We spent a very pleasant night at Harbour Town Yacht basin this past weekend, and we can enthusiastically second all the positive comments that have been posted here before — beautiful place, friendly and professional staff, great service. And that complementary bottle of Chardonnay was a welcome and unexpected treat! Cruisers should be aware, though, that the water in the entrance channel is a bit skinny, and becomes even more so just inside the marina basin. We arrived about 45 minutes or so before dead low tide and, with our draft of 4 feet, found about 3 feet of water under our keel in the entrance channel. This dropped to less than 2 feet of water clearance just inside the marina, roughly alongside the marina office, and then improved again to over four feet throughout the rest of the marina. Cruisers whose boats draw more than 5 feet or so may want to time their passages in and out of the marina for mid-to high tide.

    • Cooper River Marina (North Charleston, on the Cooper River)

County owned Cooper River Marina is a very nice faility, particulary in light of improvements to docks and shoreside facilities over the last several years. My problem with this place is how far removed it is from the Charleston historic and dining district. A LONG ride is necessary to reach the attractions, but I do see below that the marina is now beginning to provide courtesy transportation. This is a welcome innovation indeed.

Subject: Cooper River Marina , Charlston
Cruising News: Have stayed here this past week. It is a neat and clean marina, and well managed and staffed. It is located on the Cooper River just above the bridge and has clear and easy access. Although somewhat remote, the marina staff will drive you to town ( 7 mi ). The docks are floating and transients are welcome. At this time the slip fee is $1.50 + 4.00 elect. Longer stays are also reasonable. There is ships store, Wi-fi,showers,T V,lounge and washer/dryer. The marina is not that far out of the way and it is peaceful. The staff go out of their way to please. It has been an enjoyable stay, and I will stay here again.Marina Ph # 1-843-554-0790

Two years ago we left Morning Star at Cooper River Marina, in Charleston. The facility is just fine but it is out away from town. I wouldn’t want to use it for a brief “tourist” stay but for short term storage its just fine. It is owned/operated by either the City or the County (I don’t remember which), has fairly new docks and they operate a courtesy shuttle. I got a ride to the auto parts store and also back from the airport when I returned my rental car. They will take you into town to do your sightseeing but you need to hop a cab back. I’d do it again.

    • Whiteside Creek Anchorage (Statute Mile 451.5)

Whiteside Creek is one of many deep streams that offer good, even in not ultra-sheltered, anchorage directly off the AICW between Winyah Bay and Charleston Harbor. And, yes, Captain Emerson is quite correct that this whole region suffers from strong tidal currents, but, hey, that’s pretty much the rule in all of coastal South Carolina and Georgia.

We anchored here and liked the location but found the current somewhat challenging. We anchored just north of the 23′ sounding in the chartlet (the indicated location, near the 11′ sounding, is not a great choice) and had plenty of room to swing in. As did two other 40’+ boats. The problem was we were caught in a wind vs. current situation and rode strangely all night. The hook held well, but the amount of current is worth noting.
