        Tyler,
What are your destinations once you reach the Abacos? Your 17 knots will be reduced to 13 or 14 at the apex of the gulf stream.

        Tyler,
Most of the boaters who know this route have much slower boats with a max cruise speed of about ten knots. Best of Luck.

    • Report on Olde Fish House Marina, Matlacha Pass, Little Pine Island, off the GICW

Olde Fish House Marina sits on the northwest side of the Matlacha/Pine Island Bridge in the middle of Matlacha Pass, east of the GICW. This marina has not been listed in SSECN in the past, because they did not offer transient dockage. Now a few slips up to 40ft are open to transients on an available basis. They have non-ethanol gasoline and diesel is available via delivery truck.

Olde Fish House Marina in Matlacha welcomes cruisers.
Transient slips on a limited basis. $1 a foot per night! Safe protected dinghy dockage available for $5 a day (hot showers too!) See Pine Island Anchorage,
Ethanol free gas, bulk ice by the basket (it’s a working Fish House),Fresh seafood market (Really), quality restaurant on site and many more within walking distance. Art galleries, gift shops, Publix is about a mile and a half away, post office, public park, bars with nightly entertainment…

Talk to Lisa about dockage 239-321-3281

As far as draft goes; I’ve been through the North channel on vessels with a 7′ keel on all but low tide.
The south channel from Matlacha bridge to the miserable mile can be done in my boat with a 4.6′ draft. The trouble spots are at markers 22 and 38. There’s a big hump @38 that can be avoided by staying West of the marker 100′ or so. Marker 22 should be given a wide berth as well, but only 30′ or so.
As far as the power lines are concerned ; I have a 44′ mast and I only get a mild shock during extremely high tides. (That was a joke). My chart reads 47′ over the channel. I hug the power pole on the west side and gain another 6-8′.

Slow down. Make sure you’re in the channel, and come explore a town that most cruisers bypass. I changed my homeport from Key West to Matlacha 20 years ago.

    • Update on Boca Grande Causeway Swing Bridge Construction, GICW Statute Mile 34.5

The old Boca Grande Swing Bridge (Gasparilla Island Swing Bridge) crosses the GICW at statute mile 34.5 in the northern Gasparilla Sound. A new bridge was recently constructed adjacent to the old bridge. The old bridge was removed in February and the channel was closed for week, see /154973. Our thanks to Greg Allard for this update and photo.

Boca Grande Causeway Bridge Construction Update- March 8, 2016 – West Coast of Florida, Statute Mile 34, GIWW

A new swing bridge has been under construction at this location. The new bridge is in operation, and the old bridge’s center span has been removed. The contractors are still on-site, working working to remove the old bridge supports. Current bridge openings are on the hour and half hour, on request.
I telephoned the bridge operator who advised that there has been no “official high water clearance” established for the bridge, but they are “unofficially” saying that it is 22’. I suspect that estimate is based on “low steel”. Because of the nature of this swing bridge, the “high steel” (which can give extra clearance under the center of a bascule bridge) is at the outer ends of the swing bridge; that extra clearance is really not usable with a spring bridge of this type, since it is a variable distance (the bridge support is curved) and it would require passing dangerously close to the bridge’s fender system.
When we passed through, the bridge tender had us use the opening on the north side, since there were two contractors hanging in a bucket under the south span opening (see photo).
Adding to the adventure is that there are NO TIDAL HEIGHT BOARDS in place on the fenders, on either side of the bridge. Curiously, when we called on Channel 9 for an opening, the bridge tender asked how much clearance we needed, which was silly, since we our air-draft was certainly close, and they have established neither an official high water clearance nor have they installed tidal height boards. However, the bridge operator was very helpful and courteous, and readily agreed to open the bridge when we indicated that the clearance was too close. In addition to Channel 9, the operator can be reached by phone at 941-697 2271 (listen for the prompts, and you will be routed directly to the bridge operator.)

Came through the Pass in the dark both (in/out) times. 1 and 2 are on station and flashing accordingly. 3 is on station and flashing accordingly. #4 Red could not be found. 5 and 6 were on station and flashing accordingly. We did not have a depth finder and we did not touch bottom. No shoaling was apparent (waves). There is a dredge and/or barges on the North side of the harbor once you get in about a mile.

    • Cape Coral Cruise Club Visits Fishermen’s Village, Punta Gorda, FL

Punta Gorda, Florida - a GREAT cruising destination

The CCCC proves that there was always plenty to do on their visit to Charlotte Harbor. Fishermen’s Village Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, is on Charlotte Harbor/Peace River’s southeastern shore.

      CCCC Revisits Fisherman’s Village Marina
      By Steve and Nell Winner

Despite a rocky, rolling, breeze driven Charlotte Harbor, eleven hardy Cape Coral Cruise Club vessels and their crews maneuvered their way to Fisherman’s Village Marina in Punta Gorda for the October 21-23 cruise. Counting the boat crews and folks who traveled by land yacht, over 30 club members enjoyed all or some of planned activities over the 3 day event.
While some went fishing, others played card games, went biking on Marina provided bicycles, or visited the local art galleries. All enjoyed shopping at the local craft and tourist shops on Fisherman’s Village concourse. Warm weather and light breezes added to the pleasure of afternoon pool time where many members floated and shared stories of the day.
Steve and Nell Winner coordinated the cruise and attending members enjoyed daily hot breakfast casseroles prepared by Nell. As is customary with this group each afternoon ended with happy hour snacks and docktails in the Captain’s lounge. The staff at Fisherman’s Village Marina are quite accommodating in that the Marina makes the Captain’s lounge available at no added cost. IMG_0039
Wednesday was a pre-arranged pizza party in the Captain’s lounge with several pizzas delivered by a local restaurant. All enjoyed pizza along with their favorite beverages.
Thursday evening was the group dinner party at the `Captains Table’ restaurant on the second floor at the north end of the concourse. All participants enjoyed a wonderful salad bar and meal overlooking Charlotte Harbor while watching the sun set on a beautiful clear evening.
The Friday morning departure saw all boaters safely exiting the harbor and traversing much calmer conditions on Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The Cape Coral Cruise Club has been making Fisherman’s Village Marina a fall cruise destination for years and it is a cruise that regularly takes all the slips that the marina makes available.
The Cape Coral Cruise Club is open to new members who own a boat with overnight accommodations and reside in the Cape Coral / Ft. Myers area. • A Good Neighbor Speaks for Riviera Marina, Southern Punta Gorda, Charlotte Harbor, Gulf Coast

Riviera Marina is found on the waters of Alligator Creek, entered by the charted, “L” shaped channel south of Mangrove Point. This was once one of the most ill-kept marina facilities in all of Florida. We are very glad to hear that this property has been substantially improved. Our thanks to Robbie Cannon ofr this report.

My name is Robbie Cannon and I live a few canals away from Barry’s yard, the Riviera Boatyard. I am very familiar with the boat yard business as I had one for 24 years in Charleston SC. I disagree with the people that talk about wrecked boats and oil etc. Barry has nothing like that going on there at all. The commercial guys that fish out of there are the nicest people that you would ever want to meet. The truth is that when guys like Barry are not able to stay in business anymore then these comments will all be about… I SURE WISH HE WAS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Praise for Punta Gorda Anchorage, Punta Gorda, FL, Charlotte Harbor, Gulf Coast

Punta Gorda, Florida - a GREAT cruising destination In addition to recent reports praising the new pumpout boat program, the new floating dinghy dock and the free loaner bikes, Skipper Viavoda highlights other excellent reasons for anchoring in Punta Gorda, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! on Western Florida’s Charlotte Harbor/Peace River.

My husband and I frequently anchor here as we like to play `tourist’ in Punta Gorda. This is where we live. We also frequent several other anchorages in the SW Florida area in our 42′ Hunter sailboat. This anchorage happens to be one of our favorites. Punta Gorda is VERY boater friendly and the free bike loaner program makes it easy to get around in the downtown area. The Harborwalk is a multi-use walkway that extends from Fishermen’s Village marina and shopping district all the way up to the Justice Center. There are several restaurants, shopping and places to see along the way. The wildlife is abundant here and there’s always a great show put on. I highly recommend this anchorage. Good holding, friendly people and great food and drink!

    • Punta Gorda Pumpout Boat an Obvious Success, Charlotte Harbor, Gulf Coast

Punta Gorda Waterfront – Click for Chartview

Punta Gorda, Florida - a GREAT cruising destination The Punta Gorda pumpout boat has been in operation since November of 2013 and has definitely been good news for cruisers visiting SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Punta Gorda, on Western Florida’s Charlotte Harbor/Peace River. To see the schedule and locations, go to:
      http://www.ci.punta-gorda.fl.us/leis/boating.html

Question: What days of the week is the pump out boat operating? I would like to get a pump out.
Answer: The pump out boat is available on Monday’s and Thursday’s, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Contact Laishley Marina at 941-575-0142 for more information. You can hail them on VHF16/19. The marina suggests calling ahead and scheduling the pump out so they can be of the best service to you.
The resident who took this photo said the staff who run the pump out boat gave them a reward card that is good at the following businesses: Burnt Store Marina, Fishermen’s Village Marina, Laishley Marina, Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club, Isles Yacht Club, West Marine-Punta Gorda, Porto Bello Restaurant, Village Fish Market and King Fisher Fleet. • Praise for City’s Loaner Bike Program, Punta Gorda, FL, Charlotte Harbor, Western Florida

Punta Gorda Waterfront - Click for Chartview

Punta Gorda, Florida - a GREAT cruising destination Punta Gorda’s FREE loaner bike program, described by Nancy Johnson, CEO of Team Punta Gorda and Lorah Steiner, Director of Tourism, is a real boon to transient cruisers! Bikes are available within easy walking distance of the Punta Gorda Waterfront Anchorage public dinghy dock located just off Gilchrist Park which is between Fishermens Village and the twin Tamiami Bridges.
Biking is a great way to visit nearby attractions and to stretch your legs after several days on the water. Another excellent service-to-boaters provided by the city of Punta Gorda, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

The free loaner bike program had 1700 riders ytd in 2013. It’s very popular and easy to use. Our bikes are also at Fisherman’s Village and the Isles Yacht Club for cruisers that use their docks. This year, our new public floating dinghy docks were installed off of Gilchrist Park making landing much, much easier than before.
      Best Wishes,
      Nancy

Yes. Absolutely! All they need is a credit card and driver’s license, but they won’t be charged. They can walk about 10 feet from the pier and get their bikes! There are two other locations within walking distance of the pier – the Four Points Sheraton and the Wyvern Hotel. You do NOT need to be a guest of those hotels to use the bikes.
Anyone can take out a FREE bike for the day with helmet and lock included. Almost everything Punta Gorda can be accessed by bicycle. All you need is a credit card and drivers license for security purposes but you won’t be charged if the bike is returned in good condition. I used to take them out all the time. They are a great way to see the town.
I think all of the bikes have baskets as well for transporting small items. I used to love to ride them to the farmer’s markets – one on Saturday and one on Sunday – or to Fisherman’s Village. The more intrepid can bike to Ponce De Leon Park – about a five mile bike ride, I think, to visit the Peace River Wildlife Center – one of my favorite attractions. It’s mostly all flat, easily bike-able terrain with sidewalks and bike paths.
      Boat and Bike!!
      Lorah Steiner
      Director of Tourism

Sharon and I were in Punta Gorda in April and enjoyed these bikes. Its a great biking area and the bikes have pretty good size baskets and locks. If you’re looking for Cannondale’s, you won’t be happy, but if you want a nice piece of fat tire free transportation and an easy terrain to bike in (LOTS of cruiser amenities in range) this is a destination to add.
      John Martis

And, here is a map sent to us by our partners in Punta Gorda. Note the diamond shaped symbols which denote where you can pick up the loaner bikes. And so, it looks as if cruisers who dinghy ashore at Gilchrist Park will either need to walk northeast to pick up bikes hard by the Highway 41 bridges, or southwest to Fishermens Village.

There is definitely a nice new floating dinghy dock at Gilchrist Park. I used it last month. From the dinghy dock you can walk southwest along the shore to Fisherman’s Village Marina where you can pick up a free loaner bicycle to ride around town.
This link gets you to a chart that is not yet updated but the dinghy dock is between 3 and 9 (closer to 9) on the Welcome Chart.
