FLORIDA – GULF INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY – BLACKBURN POINT BRIDGE: Notice of Temporary Deviation / Request for Comments
The Coast Guard has issued a temporary deviation from the operating schedule that governs the Blackburn Point Bridge across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GICW), mile 63.1, at Osprey, FL. The Casey Key Association has requested the Coast Guard changing the operating schedule allowing the drawbridge scheduled openings. This deviation will test a change to the drawbridge operation schedule to determine whether a permanent change to
      the schedule is needed.
Under this temporary deviation, from 7 a.m. on August 12, 2024, through 7 p.m. on January 31, 2025, the Blackburn Point Bridge shall open on signal; except that from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays, the draw need only open on the hour, twenty minutes after the hour, and forty minutes after the hour. Public vessels of the United States and tugs with tows, upon proper signal, will be passed through any time. Vessels able to pass without an opening may do so at any time.

The Coast Guard is seeking comments from the public regarding this deviation on or before September 14, 2024. We encourage you to submit comments through the Federal Decision Making Portal. To do so, go to https://www.regulations.gov, type USCG- 2024-0628 in the search box and click
“Search.” Next, look for this document in the Search Results column, and click on it. Then click on the Comment option. If your material cannot be submitted using https://www.regulations.gov, call or e-mail Ms. Jennifer Zercher, Bridge Management Specialist, Seventh Coast Guard District, for alternate instructions or if you have questions on this test deviation; telephone 571-607-5951, email Jennifer.N.Zercher@uscg.mil. • Should I stay or should I go? Captain John Easley

Captain John Easley is a professional, USCG-Licensed 100 ton Master based out of Palmetto, FL. He specializes in training new owners on their boats during the process of delivery to its new home port. He can be reached directly through http://uscgcaptain.johneasley.com/

Should I stay or should I go?

As boaters, we are all subject to the whims of the weather. Sometimes it works well
with our plans. Other times, not so much.
A storm front passed through much of the southeastern United States a few weeks ago.
Considerable damage and tragic loss of life occurred in Tennessee. In the Bradenton,
Florida area, we saw sustained winds of 23 mph and gusts as high as 32 mph Sunday
      night.
The next Monday morning was clear and sunny but brought sustained winds of 22 miles
per hour out of the north. The forecast was for four foot seas at six-second intervals on
      Tampa Bay.
A client wanted me to bring his catamaran to the boatyard for haul-out Monday morning.
The cat can tolerate running in 4×6 seas on the nose. What concerned me was the 22
mph crosswind while trying to pull into a travel lift haul-out well with only six inches of
clearance on each side. Yeah, you read that right: six inches. That’s a bit tight even in
the best of conditions. During discussion with the owner, we agreed it was better to
reschedule than risk damaging the vessel on the concrete walls of the haul-out well.
Responsible boating occasionally calls for making the tough call to abandon plans and
stay at the dock during unfavorable conditions. Make that tough call. Be responsible.
Don’t be a statistic for the Coast Guard or end up on the evening news. Injuries, or
worse, are not worth a day on the water.

      Meeting about Gulfport Blvd.

      Monday, November 27th | 6 p.m.

      49th Street Neighborhood Center,1617 49th St. S.

Gulfport Boulevard, a county road traversing through Gulfport, serves as the primary point of entry for visitors to our town. It is imperative that we create an impression of welcome and beauty.

To this end, the Gulfport Merchants Association, the County, and April Thanos have initiated a collaborative effort to plant trees along the street and to enhance its appeal. In this regard, the County Forestry Representatives will present their ideas, which we will discuss to ensure they align with the community’s values. We would also like to encourage residents to attend the meeting as Gulfport Boulevard is a shared responsibility. We seek to promote private property tree planting to contribute to the region’s attractiveness. We welcome your ideas and input.

For additional information, please feel free to contact City of Gulfport Councilmember April Thanos by email at athanos@mygulfport.us or by phone at (727) 826-7138.

    • Change of General Manager at Riviera Dunes Marina, Palmetto, FL

Riviera Dunes Marina Just off Tampa Bay Owned and Operated by Boaters
Join Cruisers Net to say farewell, blueskies and gentle breezes to one outstanding professional marina general manager, Bill Chamberlain.  His forty-five years of serving the boating public in marina operations has been stellar. We will miss him, as will all who call him “friend.”  Bill is looking forward to more quality time with family at his own pace and schedule. Stepping up to the helm at Riviera Dunes Marina in Palmetto, Florida, is Luke Knuttle who has been Bill’s assistant. Luke is stepping into some big shoes, but according to Bill and others, Luke is highly qualified and ready to keep Riviera Dunes Marina moving to the next level of customer service. Luke has a very seasoned and talented team supporting the marina operations, Peggy Trotter whom I affectionately refer to as the marina Executive Support Manager and Peggy’s right arm assistant, Shana Arredondo.
So as we bid Bill farewell,  let’s give a big welcoming salute to Luke Knuttle wishing him much continued success. (See Praise for Dockmaster)

While we were surprised to hear of Bill’s retirement, we are so excited for him and this next “career”! He’s been a wonderful GM at Riviera Dunes and has left a fantastic Team in his place! Wishing him the very best in his retirement!
