    • Praise for Riviera Dunes Marina Resort, on the Manatee River, off Tampa Bay

Riviera Dunes Marina Just off Tampa Bay Owned and Operated by Boaters

Our thanks to Julie Burdick for these kind words, as posted on AGLAC’s Forum. A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR, Riviera Dunes Marina Resort occupies the Manatee River’s northern banks, just east of the easternmost of three bridges crossing the river at Bradenton and Palmetto near charted Craig Point. See FOCUS ON  for more on Riviera Dunes Marina Resort.

We are currently at the Riviera Dunes Marina in Palmetto and really like it. It is up the Manatee River so it is quiet and protected and has floating concrete docks. It offers a nice restaurant, inside and outside bar, 2 pools and nice people. They have marina socials every other Friday too I believe. Although it is not cheap I would consider it fair and reasonable. The other thing we have found very nice is they have a pump out boat that you can have stop by your boat on Thursday for a mere $15. We will be staying there until mid February so if you end up there stop by and say hi… we have been following your youtube videos!

    • Healy Report: the Okeechobee Waterway East to West, Central Florida

Once again, Jim Healy graciously imparts his experience in response to a Looper’s questions on AGLCA’s Forum with an excellent description of the Okeechobee Waterway. Jim is a true cruiser helping cruisers! Thank you Jim.

      1) How many days should we anticipate to cross Florida going west at 9 knots. Currently thinking 1 day to Pt Mayaca, day 2 to Clewiston or Moore Haven, then day 3 and 4 from Moore Haven to Alva, FL (WP Franklin Lock).
“It all depends.” This trip is “Old Florida.” This is orange grove and sugar cane country. On the St. Lucie Canal, there are marinas at Stuart and Indiantown. There is a Corp Of Engineers dock at St. Lucie Lock with is $15/day with a Golden Age Pass. There’s not much/nothing to see at these stops, so one night overnights are typical for cruisers. A place to shower and sleep. So, typically, what we do is stop at the anchorage in Stuart. Then, Stuart to Clewiston. Then, Clewiston to Ft. Myers. I recognize that is a longer day than some people may want, but we do this trip twice a year, and as I said, very little to see. We stay at Roland Martin’s in Clewiston. Very nice Tiki Bar, and a relaxing place. Sammy the dockmaster is a wonder to enjoy. There are nice public docks in Moore Haven with power and water for $1.00 per foot. There are public docks at the library in Labelle. First come, first serve; Med Moorings. Good wifi. It’s the only place in the canal system to actually see a town. There is also a COE dock at the WP Franklin Lock; also $15/day with power and water. There are two locks on the St. Lucie Canal and three on the Caloosahatchee end. The highest lick is St. Lucie; around 16 feet vertical lift.
      2) Where best to dock/anchor along the route?
You are permitted to anchor in the canal after closing at 1700. No one does [anchor] on the St. Lucie end except at the lock, on the north side.. You cannot anchor in the canals during the daytime hours of lock operation.
      3) Is it better to cross the lake (route 1) or go the rim route (route 2)? What criteria to decide?
DO NOT TAKE THE RIM ROUTE WITH A 5′ DRAFT. PERIOD. We have never taken the Rim Route. The cross lake route is shallow enough, and even more so this year. The Southwest Water Management District has been holding the lake level down to avoid large water releases of the vile Lake O water into the canals. Not sure it’s doing any good, but check the Route 1 water depths. In the spring, we crossed when there was only 5′ of water, and the place that will affect you is the 5-mile channel from the lake into Clewiston.
      4) What water level reading do we need from COE for our 5′ draft?
Five feet, of course. There are two places where the control depth is measured. One is in the channel out into the lake at Port Mayaca, the other is the channel from the lake into Clewiston. STAY IN THE CLEWISTON CHANNEL. The lake bottom is limestone, not sand. The Clewiston channel is dug, so the edges are rock. Much like the “Rock Pile” in South Carolina. There is no tide in the lake, but winds can change water levels at the north and south by as much as a foot or more. Watch winds that have been blowing for many days…
Bonus Question: What the current status of the Red Tide?
Yes. Red Tide is a problem on the gulf, not in the lake. IT IS A NATURAL PHENOMENA, NOT RELATED TO POLLUTION. It’s blue/green algae that you have to worry about in the canals and lake. Both conditions are problems in Florida. DO NOT SWIM IN THESE WATERS. They do contain nasty bacteria, but there are larger reptile hazards here, too. Big lizzagators live here. We wear nitrile exam gloves when handling lock lines.

    • Anchoring on the Cross Florida Barge Canal (Big Bend Region, north of Crystal River)

This is one of Claiborne’s early posting and today TJ Palmerton has questions for you, in the comments below.

I’ve copied the discussion below from the Net’s “Ask Your Neighbor” page, and the AGLCA mailing list. The never completed Florida Barge Canal pierces the Big Bend portion of the Western Florida coastline north of Crystal River, and short hop south of the western entrance of the Withlacoochee River. I have never tried anchoring here, but after reading the messages below, it looks like a real possibility!

Does anybody have recent information regarding access, depths and anchoring  in the abandoned Cross Florida Barge Canal instead of going up to Yankeetown or  Crystal River. This would mean continuing straight into the Barge Canal at G 23  instead of turning NE up the Withlacoohee River toward Yankeetown as mentioned  in “Skipper Bob”.
      Chuck and Barbara Ganem
      “Gold Watch”

We anchored twice in the CFBC – once in 2008  and again in 2009. We need 4.5 feet of water and had no problem with depth. As I  remember, it was 7-9 feet.  The CFBC is well-sheltered from winds and has otters,  dolphin, and bald eagles. Small (fast) boats use the CFBC to get to/from the  boat ramp by the bridge, but the traffic is light and almost non-existent after  dark.
One caution, in 2009, we started to anchor a mile from the entrance  (where we anchored in 2008) and were stopped by the Coast Guard. They directed  us to anchor in the turning basin, which is maybe a mile east of the bridge. The turning basin will add about 4-5 miles to your trip (one  way).
      Billy

Thank you for responding to my question regarding  anchoring in the CFBC. I have since contacted the park ranger for that area thru  a phone number I found on the government chart for that area now called the  Cross Florida Greenway. His name is Chris McKenzie. He was very informative  about the area and assured me that my draft of 4.5 feet would have no problem in  the canal all  the way to  and including the turning basin which was  about 1/2 mile past the highway bridge on the right side of the channel. He  recommends that the turning basin is where to anchor and said it provides  excellent protection from any direction. He explained that maybe about once  every three months a tow and barge uses the canal to transport loads  from mining either into or out of the  canal.
The lowest water depth is at where the canal  enters the  point of land on the chart. He explained that at low tide the  tow captains wait for a rising tide to pass this point with a loaded barge, but  for a 4.5 ft draft this should be no problem.
This anchorage appears to be easier access,  deeper and less distance than either going up the Crystal River or to Yankeetown  but of course is still only an anchorage.

As you get close to the non-operational lock the Withlacoochee river comes in from the south. Good depth up to within a 1/4 mile of the dam and spillway. There is no boat access to the Lake. Strong current in this part of the river.. The Withlacoochee is blocked on the north side as it is fed by another spillway on the north side of the lock. I have done both sides of the lock in my 11' Zodiac. Depth is good all the way from the Gulf to the lock.

I am wondering how far up the canal you can go. Can you go all the way up to the locks and is there any way to get past them going a different way around them?

Does anyone know how far that you can go up the canal? I heard that there’s a fresh water lake off to the east to anchor in. I have a 38’ Sea Ray and am curious about the depth all the way up.
        Thank you,
        TJ

    • Request for Liveboard Marina Recommendations

As so many of you have, Robert Waldrop and his wife are about to step off land and live on the water. If you have marinas that you can recommend as good liveaboard locations, let us hear from you.

My wife and I are in the process of downsizing to acquire a liveaboard boat and become part-time cruisers, living full-time on our boat. Part of this process entails searching for liveaboard marinas, as we don’t necessarily want to be on the hook all the time especially as my wife will still be working full or part-time (she’s an OR scrub tech). We’re currently in North Carolina and planning to relocate to the west coast of Florida, depending on her new job location. Any information for marinas allowing liveaboards in North Carolina, South Carolina, or the west coast of Florida up thru Alabama (NOT GEORGIA – after this anchoring regulation issue they won’t see ANY money of mine!) would be welcome.

The Cape Coral Cruise Club is a group of dedicated cruisers who always provide unique reports from the marinas they visit. Longboat Key Club Moorings, A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR, is located on the western shores of Sarasota Bay, north of the city of Sarasota and south of Longboat Pass.

      CCCC May Cruise to Sarasota

      By Capt. Doug Rhees

Early in the year the CCCC cruise chairman made plans for the May Club cruise to take the Okeechobee Waterway, Caloosahatchee River, east to Lake Okeechobee, cross it and continue on east on the St. Lucie River to Stuart Fl. One of the Club members had made arrangements for 10 boats at Sunset Bay and Marina. As cruise time neared reports of shallow water east of Clewiston in the Lake had several members quite concerned about running aground.

This concern prompted a change in the May20 to 26 cruising dates as the safety of our members and their boats is paramount. We were able to obtain good dock space along with welcoming staff at both Marina Jack and Longboat Key Club in Sarasota. Because of the destination uncertainty and the late date change in venues, our numbers dwindled to just four boats. The trip up from Charlotte Harbor May 20 was pleasant as most boaters chose to run outside in the Gulf. The boat that came up the ICW found a pleasant ride as well with no bridge delays. Once all were docked Happy Hour was enjoyed by all at dockside.

Tuesday saw most members spending some time on boat projects prior to a group dinner at the Marina Jack upper level restaurant. Wednesday we all walked to the shopping area sightseeing and enjoyed a lunch at the Whole Foods store. We had an early group dinner at Owens Fish Camp (a local favorite and quite a unique spot). If you don’t get there early the wait can be very long.

Thursday we departed Marina Jack for a short 5 mile run up Sarasota Bay to the Long Boat Key Club to enjoy their pool and many amenities including the resort’s beach. Some of our group went via Marina shuttle to St. Armands Circle to shop. On day two the group spent time at the pool meeting new friends, and viewing the many large boats slipped at this beautiful facility. The evening meal was a group cookout using grills provided by the Marina.

As happens with most cruises the final day comes too soon and it was time to slip lines and shove off for home. Although some planned to head south on the outside for a faster return time, reports of an increasing south wind kept everyone in the ICW. It was crowded and slower but made for a safe ride home. Even a small group can and did have a great time. Hopefully a run to the east coast will be in the works for 2020.

The Octette Bridge Club is a sentimental comedy that let us listen in on eight matronly Irish Catholic sisters who meet every other Friday to play cards and swap gossip. The story ultimately focuses on the oldest, the domineering Martha, and the youngest, the high-strung and emotional Betsy. Set in the l 930s it’s a charming play about American life in a bygone era.

Lesson Info — Learn Soul-style Rumba…how to Rumba to Soul music! This class, taught by Sam from Swing Time, will broaden your musical dance skills, so you’re no longer limited to boogying back & forth between two feet. A surprising number of soul, funk, blues, and R&B tunes, including many of your favorite songs, have a slow-quick-quick rhythm that’s perfect for dancing Rumba, and we’re going to dance to a variety of these songs in the lesson. In addition to typical Rumba moves, we’ll learn some new ones, borrowed from other dances. For experienced dancers, we’ll show you how to convert your entire repertoire of Salsa, Bachata, and Cha Cha moves to Rumba dancing! If you like dancing to Soul, Funk, Blues, or R&B music, including live bands, then you’ll enjoy adding Rumba to your repertoire.

Preference will given to artists residing in Gulfport. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Two grants, including funding, marketing/advertising support, and exhibition space will be offered with a total value of $1000 each. Deadline to apply is July 31.

Call for Applicants for its 2019/2020 Community Support Grant Program

The Gulfport Merchant’s Chamber (GMC) has announced a call for applicants for its 2019/2020 community support grant program. Local non-profit organizations that target or include Gulfport in their activities are invited to apply. Applicants must be certified tax-exempt non-profit organizations, government entities requesting funds for public purposes, or schools and colleges at any level.

For more details and to apply, see the application available atwww.VisitGulfportFlorida.comClick on “Community Grant” at the bottom of the home page. Submission of an application does not guarantee funding and the Board of the GMC reserves the right to determine or adjust the amount awarded to any recipient. Applications must be received in writing and must be emailed, postmarked or delivered no later than March 31, 2019. Applications received after the deadline cannot be considered. Decisions on recipients are scheduled to be announced by April 27.

Special consideration will be given to organizations that are able to help promote and provide volunteers for the GMC events that raise the funds making these grants possible. “Gecko World” events with funds earmarked each year for community giving include “Gecko Crawl,” “Gecko Ball” and the GeckoFest street festival. The events grow in size and popularity every year and each requires a large promotional effort and a large number of volunteers. Grant amounts will be determined and funds distributed to grantees after these GMC events have concluded for 2019.

Since sponsoring the community grants, the GMC has provided many thousands of dollars in funding to a large and growing roster of worthy non-profit organizations. The GMC also gives back to the community in other ways during the year, including sponsoring “Gulfport’s Get Rescued” each February, benefitting animal rescue groups. A monthly Clothing Swap benefitting CASA is held during the Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market; and the GMC’s “Holiday Hoopla” helps collect donations for Operation Santa in December. Public art installations have also been commissioned and installed with GMC funding.

2020 Census: How to Get Involved

The 2020 Census provides an opportunity for everyone to be counted. Tribal, state, and local governments; community based organizations; faith-based groups; schools; businesses; the media; and others play a key role in developing partners to educate and motivate residents to participate in the 2020 Census.

When community members are informed, they are more likely to respond to the census. Through collaborative partnerships, the U.S. Census Bureau and community leaders can reach the shared goal of counting EVERYONE in 2020.

The Complete Count Committees (CCC) program is key to creating awareness in communities all across the country.

      • CCCs utilize local knowledge, influence, and resources to educate communities and promote the census through locally
      • based, targeted outreach efforts.
      • CCCs provide a vehicle for coordinating and nurturing cooperative efforts between tribal, state, and local governments; communities; and the Census Bureau.
      • CCCs help the Census Bureau get a complete count in 2020 through partnerships with local governments and community organizations.

      WHO?
Tribal, state, and local governments work together with partners to form CCCs to promote and encourage response to the 2020 Census in their communities. Community-based organizations also establish CCCs that reach out to their constituents.

      WHAT?
A CCC is comprised of a broad spectrum of government and community leaders from education, business, healthcare, and other community organizations. These trusted voices develop and implement a 2020 Census awareness campaign based upon their knowledge of the local community to encourage a response.

      WHEN?
The formation of CCCs is happening NOW! Leaders are identifying budget resources and establishing local work plans. In 2020, they will implement the plans and lead their communities to a successful census count.

      HOW?
It’s up to all of us! CCCs know the best way to reach the community and raise awareness. Some activities could include:

      • Holding CCC kickoff meetings with media briefings.
      • Participating in Census rallies or parades.
      • Coordinating Census unity youth forums.
      • Hosting Interfaith breakfasts and weekend events.
      • Encouraging the use of Statistics in Schools classroom resources.
      • Incorporating census information in newsletters, social media posts, podcasts, mailings, and websites.
      • Helping recruit census workers when jobs become available.

      WHY?
The primary goal of the 2020 Census is to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place. Community influencers create localized messaging that resonates with the population in their area. They are trusted voices and are best suited to mobilize community resources in an efficient manner.
