Over the last ten years I’ve visited the Ft Myers Yacht Basin on several occasions as I’ve cruised the cut to the AICW but I’d not visited there in the last year or so, boy have they done a nice remodeling of the cruisers men’s and ladies restroom/showers. This morning I talked to Brian the manager and complemented them on the nice upgrade to the facilities. This marina is a great location if you’re east or west bound thru the cut, fuel and ships store prices are very good, the location is within walking distance to Ft Myers historical district including several great pubs, eating choices and even a very highly acclaimed theatre is just a couple blocks away. Try it! you will not be disappointed.

We have difficulty entering marinas because we can’t maneuver easily. We visit most marinas once, and most we decide we cannot return to because they are more suited to boats with twin reversible engines and bow thrusters. This marina graciously and cheerfully allows us to tie up on their outside wall. We are headed there for our 4th stay on the way home to the Apalachicola area. It is the only marina we have been in more than once. With all the amenities and fun things close by, what’s not to like?

S/V Jolie and her crew are making our annual stop at Ft Myers City Yacht Basin. Last night the marina put on a customer-appreciation event, with a catered sunset cruise on a local tour boat. We continue to be impressed by the fine service and love being right in the heart of historic downtown Ft Myers. Shops, restaurants, galleries, theater and more are close by and there’s even a free trolley that goes to Publix. The new pricing structure includes $1/foot for transients.

We were live-aboards here for over 2 years and loved it! Dock personnel are the most qualified, helpful, responsive, and friendly of ANY marina we have been in. They will even have someone stand by after hours to recieve and help you if you call ahead.
They generally have the lowest price in the area on fuel and are very diligent in maintaining clean, filtered fuel…no water or algea contamination.

We passed this marina on our way to Sanibel. About 30 min later we were hit by a ferocious thunderstorm, winds gusting 40 and us in a narrow winding channel for the first time. A call to Ft Myers sea tow confirmed the same all the way to Sanibel. We turned around and called the Ft Myers Yacht Basin, were talked in close then lost comms prob due to the constant lightning. As we passed the breakwater, I saw a lone figure waiting on the end of the dock in foul weather gear. He helped us dock in the height of the storm and we were tied up tight. Stayed the night. Staff were very helpful and friendly. As it was Sunday night, most of the restaurants and businesses were closed. Clean facility, nice laundry, great showers.

I liked the setup at Ft Myers City Marina, and a few other places, the docks are all plumbed with PVC vacuum pipes, each slip has a valve and quick coupler. For every couple of docks there is a dock box with vacuum hose, when you want to pump out you get the hose, connect it to the quick coupler and your blackwater fitting, open the valves and pump out rinse the hose when done (please), and return to the dock box, no scheduling, moving around, or waiting.
I find the process is made simpler if you have the quick coupler adapter that screws into the blackwater deck plate, I had one for my Camano but
haven’t been able to find one which matches the threads on the my Monk.

There are two excellent marinas in Ft. Myers. We have stayed at both. Fort Myers Municipal Yacht Basin is close to downtown and the busy waterfront. Legacy Harbor Marina, (formerly Centennial Harbor) is a couple of blocks from downtown but closer to a new Publix and closer to the Edison Home. The Post Office is midway between the two. If you plan to leave your boat unattended then Legacy looks more secure but we left our boat for six weeks at the Yacht Basin with no problem.
The Fort Myers area is convenient to Southwest Florida Airport (RSW) where you may book a flight or rent a car. There is taxi service to the airport.

Cruising News: The city of Fort Myers mooring field on the ICW advised us that they will only allow sailboats on their mooring balls. Does anyone know why trawlers or power boats are not allowed? Since Fort Myers Beach mooring balls are available to everyone, it does not seem to be a Lee county or Florida issue.

My husband and I visited this marina before our vacation to preview it. We drove our car and when we got to the marina we weren’t impressed. The docks were in need of repair with nails poking through. We went into the dock asters office to inquire about pricing…the older lady working there was helpful but the gentleman there was to busy to even acknowledge our presence. We even asked him a question and the never looked up at us. Then we went to check out the restaurant and the older lady working there was very rude to us when we inquired about the menu as they weren’t open yet. Needless to say we will never stay at this place.

Docked at this marina June 3rd 2015 for lunch. Dock-master informed me of “new” policy, cost $45 TO DOCK FOR LUNCH ! Said I could stay all day and I get a $25 coupon to use on premises. I guess if I got a $25 lunch then docking for the privilege of eating there would only cost $15.00 What a deal! Turned around and promptly left. Cabbage Key is much better and just a little further up the waterway.

Access from ICW is NOT marked. Take a heading of 215deg from ICW Daymarker #38 and eventually you will see Private Daymarker #2, from there the channel is well marked.

The marked channel to the west, slightly north of ICW#38 is the new marked channel to Southseas Marina.

‘Tween Waters Marina is as good as ever. We were there recently and all facilities were great. Anchorage in Roosevelt Channel is pretty thin, however. It is very hard to find any low water depth over four feet up in the protected part of the channel.

Please don’t tell anyone how great Tween Waters is, or we won’t be able to find space! Seriously, this is a great marina with lots to do while there. The Dockmaster is helpful and the docks are in good repair.

Tween Waters Inn and Marina is a good cruising destination but one must be prepared for a different docking situation. They have a long face dock for side-to docking for larger boats.
Smaller boats will be docked closer to shore in slips. These slips have no finger piers so one must exit their boat via the swim platform. With low tides this can be difficult, so be sure to carry a small step ladder that will fit your swim platform. Also, you will take a spring line off the piling to tie either amidships or bow, depending on the length of the boat. This line is attached to the piling by a pulley with a weight on the end. This keeps tension on the line and really does keep the boat in the proper spot.
There are two restaurants on the premises that allow for casual or upscale dining. The Old captive House has many local fish favorites on their menu plus items for the landlubber. The weather was quite chilly when we were recently there and the fireplace in the Crow’s Nest was wonderful. Next door to the resort is the Captiva Island Yacht Club for those who have reciprocal privileges.
The beach is just across the street and they have a large heated pool and spa. All in all, this is a good destination or a stop on a longer cruise.

An expensive friendly marina with much improved channel over previous decades. We saw just under 7’ of depth on first hour of rising tide. Lowest water was in vicinity of channels dogleg turn. Good small plates at the dockside eatery. Superior showers and coin machine in laundry are good features.

I recently found a channel from GICW to South Seas Resort on Captiva Island with reworked channel markers starting south of ICW “39” in descending order, then making a dogleg to right and eventually leading to Redfish Pass. South Seas entrance is to port prior to Redfish. Redfish Pass is now a straight heading out of 270 with proper buoyage. The 1,4,5 aids on charts have been relocated to mark current channel. South Seas Resort has a handout printed showing both.

Just visited this marina this last Saturday (Sept 15) with our Tartan 33, and found the experience to be thoroughly enjoyable. The Dockmaster and his staff here are among the most pleasant and helpful I’ve encountered anywhere (unlike at not-to-be-named marina a mile or so to the south). The facilities are first rate, the showers excellent (just walk right in… they provide towels, soap and shampoo!), and the grounds are tropical and very well tended. In all, a great experience. For any of you folks traveling with a boat club, be sure to negotiate club rates (maybe not in full season?). Yes, it’s a bit pricey atmosphere, but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. I don’t mind paying a bit more once in a while, especially if I think I’m getting my money’s worth. Easy access from the ICW, and Redfish Pass is right there for a good deep-water opening to the Gulf.

The current Cruisers Net chart [“Chart View” – editor] correctly shows, as several mariners have commented, that the South Seas Marina passage has been completely re-routed. On the OLD NOAA charts and many chart plotter’s, the privately marked channel from the ICW to South Seas Resort Marina runs in an easterly westerly direction. The new channel runs, as has been previously noted, in a sotheasterly to northwestly direction and starts well west off the ICW from Pine Island Sound, as shown on the Cruisers Net chart. The markers are correctly configured port and starboard, so coming in from the ICW, you leave the reds to PORT!

Just got back from a 1 week spring break cruise. Stayed at South Seas Resort. It is expensive but worth it. I draw 5 feet and entrance channel is not a problem at mid-tide. The channel was not on my chartplotter apparently was somewhat recently moved.

We recently spent a few days at South Seas Resort Marina in our Catalina 34, Mother Ocean. A few years ago we had a “choppy” experience there because of some abrupt staffing changes (probably as a result of the economy) and some problems with their entrance channel.
We are happy to report that this year our experience there was excellent. The channel is now well marked. They have staffed up the marina with a very competent group. Finally, the resort, which had a few bugs in it during the years after its post-hurrican reopening, is running at full strength and very smoothly.
While it does cost more to dock there, one should keep in mind that the full resort is available to marina guests. At present it is, in our view, one of the nicest places to tie off on the west coast of Florida.

Very nice professional, high-end marina. Lots of amenities – easy access to Gulf side beach, 3 pools – one with slides, multiple restaurants, trolleys, golf coarse, etc. It was crowded but definitely resort like. A little tight for my full keel “she don’t like to back up’ sailboat – but well worth the adventure.

Subject: South Seas Resort New Channel
Cruising News: South Seas Resort on Captiva Island has a new channel configuration. The new channel is a “dog leg” arrangement that starts at Red Fish Pass and goes to the ICW’s marker #38. At the ICW end you will see red #24 that starts the channel heading West to South Seas. So be sure to take the red markers on your port side heading to the resort. I was in there on Oct.19, 2009 and did not see less than 6.5 feet through the entire channel. Also local knowledge states that Red Fish Pass has at least 6′ of water and is passable again.
        Enjoy

I just tracked thru the new South Seas (Captiva FL) channel between ICW and Gulf WGS datum co ordinates are:
        Marker 24 (ICW Side) N26 33.045 W82 10.189 ***
        Channel Turn N26 32.540 W82 10.914
        Marina Entrance N26 33.012 W82 11.648
        RedFish Pass N26 33.240 W82 11.874
        Gulf side mark N26 33.185 W82 12.696
The channel is configured from Gulf to ICW so if entering from the ICW make sure Mark 24 and all red are to port!!
Another note regarding South Seas. They charge $50 docking fee for up to 6 people (boat size irrelevant) then $12.50 per person over 6 even if you’re just going in to use their restaurants. Don’t know rationale behind it but it’s certainly curtailed locals visiting there.

Subject: Significant changes to entrance channel to South Seas Plantation
Cruising News: A heads up to cruisers heading to South Seas Resort: The channel leading off the ICW has moved considerably, such that the dayboard markers are no longer any good. The resort has arranged a set of floating cans out that mark a rather winding navigable channel that seems to provide adequate depths. As yet, there is no signage up at the ICW to explain this, and the cans are not easy to spot, so confusion reigns. Several boats bottomed out trying to use the old dayboard channel while we were staying at the resort last week (April 5-8). The resort is apparently working to get some signage up and to get the word out to boaters when they make reservations. In our case, we found out when a passing fellow sailor hollered out a warning to us. Caution is advised.

Continue the ICW to ‘Green 61’ where you find the channel to Cabbage Key restaurant. Stop for lunch or stay overnight. If overnight plan to arrive after the busy lunch period. Take a clean dollar bill to add your name to the wall.

We’ve stayed at Cabbage Key twice in the last six months. The first time was in January at the height of this winter’s cold snap. During that visit, we were transiting up to our new home port of St. Petersburg in our newly acquired Jefferson 46. When we pulled in about 1700, we were the only boat there. The dockmaster was very helpful, and the staff was wonderful. We ended up extending our overnight stay for three days to soak in the relaxing atmosphere. Each night, we were the only ones on the island, and had the entire staff catering to us. During the day, we put our kayak in the water and trekked over to Cayo Costa Island, and had the entire 6 mile stretch of sand to ourselves. This allowed us to escape the lunch crowd we had heard about, and enjoy the solitude.
Recently, we visited Cabbage Key again, this time over the 4th of July weekend. On this trip, we were on our Catalina 36 sail boat that we were taking up to All American Storage in Port Charlotte to be put on the hard for hurricane season. Once again, we had a wonderful time, although during the day, the place was a madhouse with anywhere from 20 – 30 small boats in for lunch and drinks. Because of the number of overnight guests in larger boats, we were put on the middle dock closest to the dockmaster’s office/store. I was a little concerned with depth as we draw 6 ft, but had absolutely no problem pulling all the way in. The dockmaster had me leave my stern beyond the end of the dock by about 6 ft, but I was still showing 6 ft on the depth sounder (about 7.5 ft of depth). After about 1800 each night, the small boats left, and we had the restaurant almost to ourselves. As usual the food and service were great. The only issue we had on this visit was that we were hit hard on three occasions by small boats as their (probably inebriated) captains attempted to get underway. In the future, I would not want to be on the middle dock for just this reason.
Overall, this is one of my favorite places on the western FL coast. It is easy to get in and out with approach and dockside depths of 7 – 10 ft, and it is easily transited even after dark. The kayaking is fantastic, the food is great, the staff friendly, and it is an easy shot out through Boca Grande Pass, into Charlotte Harbor, or down through Pine Island Sound.

In addition to Portobello’s at Burnt Store, there is Cabbage Key, just off the G-ICW south of Boca Grand Pass, across from the anchorage at Useppa Island. Cabbage Key is a true dock ‘n dine location. It isn’t fine dining, but it’s a true American Classic experience. Adequate water for your draft. We’ve been there several times in the winter months when water levels are lower. Short finger piers.

We found the dockmaster at Cabbage Key very helpful and friendly. He really helped with our lines both upon arrival and departure. He also helped a nearby boat with engine trouble. Lunch was good, not fancy, but good and the service was good.
        Doug Kendrick

Cabbage Key is still a great place to stop for lunch or dinner. Our grandson call it “The Cheeseburger in Paradise Place.” The new Dockmaster is a big improvement and is actually nice. It’s easy to anchor just off Useppa and dinghy into lunch.
        Jake Dye

        Dear Cruising Writer,
I wanted to pass on some information about a recent stay at Cabbage Key. I have stayed there a handful of times over the past few years and have had a delightful experience with each visit. During the day, Cabbage Key can be a busy, bustling place and cruisers, and visitors alike, should be patient on their approach as the Dockmaster jockeys the many vessels to their docks. This man single handedly docks legions of boaters daily many of who don’t speak English or have the first clue about operating their rental boats. With this understanding and patience, you’ll find him to be quite likable and extremely helpful.
Once you’re docked, stroll up the hill to the restaurant and have lunch. I recommend the cheeseburger, potato salad and a Cabbage Creeper – a tasty drink that will soak the stress from your pores. While on the island, be sure to explore the nature trail with its well marked flora and fauna as well as climb the water tower for its amazing views over the ICW. From Cabbage Key you can cross the ICW to Useppa Island or scoot around the corner to Cayo Costa for one of the most amazing beaches in Southwest Florida.
One of the best kept secrets about Cabbage Key is the dinners. The restaurant transforms at night as the staff puts on a bit more formal attire, the white linens come out and the food is absolutely fantastic.
As far as amenities, dockside electric is conveniently located near each slip, but there is no dock water available as it’s a limited resource on the island. On our last trip our water pump failed so we needed to use the bathroom and shower facilities at the foot of the dock. The bathrooms were always clean, modern and spacious – frankly I remember thinking I might use them on our next visit as opposed to the confining, and shared, bathroom onboard.
Overall Cabbage Key is a great destination whether you’re staying overnight or just for a meal. Its quaint charm harkens back to times past, a friendly old Florida that’s sometimes hard to find on the mainland. I’ll be back.
        Sincerely,
        Matt

Excellent reception and food, also the dock master was very friendly. The owner however was as nasty and grumpy as ever!
