      Looking for a reasonable place to moor a 35 foot sailboat for long term near Guana Cay. Just bought a boat that has been occupied on the hook in Marsh Harbour, but I’m living in a home in Guana for the next year.

      Question Regarding Edgewater Lake Anchorage, Charlotte Harbor, Port Charlotte, FL

      In reference to a much earlier posting, referencing issues with anchoring in Edgewater Lake, Richard Messier is asking for advice on short term anchoring on this small body of water. If you have recent experience anchoring in Edgewater Lake, let us hear from you.

      I just lost my docking spot on the next street over to edge water lake. So I thought it was a good time to plan on taking the 38 ft Irwin out of the water to paint the bottom but need to wait a week or two. Thought I might leave it anchored at edge water lake until then. Question is can I without being harassed? I am planning on purchasing a home in this area in the next two months but waiting for the sale of my current home in Port Charlotte. Also what other options are there?

      LNM: Update on ATONs South of Fernandina Beach, FL, AICW Statute Mile 719.5

      Reports of shoaling south of Fernandina Beach have been coming in for several years prompting numerous comments. This shoaling and shifting channel lies c. two miles south of Fernandina Beach harbor just north of the Waterway’s turn into Kingsley Creek. Our thanks to Geologist Bill Aley for sending this buoy update. Note that these temporary buoys are not charted in our charts.

      Here is the latest update from the local U.S. Coast Guard district: Three temporary navigation aids were placed last Friday, however, the old Navigation Aids will not be removed until sometime next month based on availability of their construction platform. Info for the newly placed navigation aids is as follows:

      1. TEMPORARILY ESTABLISHED AMELIA RIVER BUOY 18A
      A. SET 5NFR IN POSITION 30-39-52.591N / 081-29-07.904W (30°39.8765N / 081°29.1317W, 30.664609 / -81.485529) IN 14 FEET OF
      WATER USING 45 FEET OF 1/2 INCH CHAIN AND 135LB DORMOR.

      2. TEMPORARILY ESTABLISHED FERNANDINA BEACH BUOY 1A
      A. SET 5CFR IN POSITION 30-39-46.402N / 081-29-05.211W (30°39.7733N / 081°29.0869W, 30.662889 / -81.484781) IN 15 FEET OF
      WATER USING 45 FEET OF 1/2 INCH CHAIN AND 135LB DORMOR.

      Farrington’s convenience store is located at the gazebo dock. He now has a shower available for the cruisers, $5/shower is what he is planing on charging.

      Coast Guard and Good Samaritan Rescued Five People

      This good Samaritan is a perfect example of a Cruiser Helping Cruisers, to say nothing of good seamanship. Bravo Palm Breeze!
      While we cannot all be such dramatic heroes, the concern we show for each other out on the water often goes a long way toward making cruising more fun and even saving lives.

      Coast Guard, good Samaritan rescued five people near Boynton Beach

      MIAMI — The Coast Guard, with the help of a good Samaritan, rescued five people from the water Saturday approximately four miles east of Lower Boynton Beach, Florida.

      Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders received a report at approximately 9:24 a.m. of a 31-foot pleasure craft with five people aboard rapidly taking on water.

      Watchstander launched an Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to the scene and a Station Lake Worth Inlet also launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew. Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission also responded.

      A good Samaritan aboard the sailing vessel Palm Breeze arrived on scene and retrieved the five people from the water. The boat was completely submerged. The good Samaritan transferred the people to the Lake Worth Inlet boatcrew who took them back to the station.

      The 2017 hurricanes brought changes to the entrance buoys of the channel to Bimini. The waypoint in Explorer Chartbook Near Bahamas 8th edition remains the same, but some of the buoys are off station as originally plotted on the chart.

      * The first red buoy on the chart is now off station, having moved northward off the southern tip of North Bimini right in the middle of a very shallow sandbar. Don’t go there!

      * The first red buoy you see approaching South Bimini is actually the second one on the chart. It is in the correct position.

      * There is a green buoy beyond that and it is off station near the entrance to Bimini Sands Marina on South Bimini.

      * There are four small buoys along the shore of South Bimini leading into North Bimini. They are in correct position. The lighted pole at the entrance also remains.

      Another note on Bimini: The marinas no longer furnish Customs papers for you to fill out on your boat. Here’s a link: https://forms.bahamas.gov.bs/dp_form.asp?fid=263.
      You have to either go to Customs to get the forms and fill them out there or download them and print them out so you can fill them ahead of time.

      The Customs office is still at the Big Game Marina, while Immigration is a little farther north at the Administration Building (both shown on the chart).

      Advice on Approaching Intracoastal Dredge Operations

      Lots of dredging being done this time of year, so check the Local Notices posted on Cruisers’ Net for dredging in your area, go at no-wake speed and heed Tom’s Rules of the Road advice.

      When you come upon a dredge you will see black shapes displayed in the rigging. You are to pass the dredge on the side with the diamonds. The Black Balls are no go! Diamonds are your friend.
